@DennisReynolds Playing a game at a solid 30fps because you prefer the improved visuals is a valid choice. It's not the same as playing a game that can't maintain it's forced 60fps framerate. I'd take a solid 30 over a wonky 60 all day. Framerate drops disrupt gameplay.
Can't wait! I never finished this one so I'm looking forward to finally doing that. Especially excited for DQ 1 and 2 next year. Keep these 2D HD games coming!
@dskatter I take it you don't remember all the iterations of Street Fighter 2, 3, and 4, Guilty Gear, various SNK fighters, etc.? They sold those to us at full price for essentially the equivalent of a season or two. They rarely reinvented the wheel for them.
@PuppetMaster my fault for not clarifying. I consider them the same game but you're right they are technically different versions. But yeah it's no big deal. This game has always been janky. Hoping they look to CvS next. I'd love to see them do something cool with part 2 like balancing and maybe adding those cool 2d backgrounds from part 1. Unlikely though...
@PuppetMaster it was about 10 years ago when it released but that was still about 17 years after it's initial release. The King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match Final Edition was the one I was thinking of. It rebalanced several of the characters and modes.
Also 2k2 Unlimited match had balance changes but that was 2009 or 2010.
@PuppetMaster I disagree there. They rebalanced KoF98 fairly recently. And KoF 2k2 not long before that. I was hoping they'd do something similar for this one. Oh well
@Flaming_Kaiser they have a cheaper version for around $250. But they have also started releasing paperback versions after a while and they are much less expensive but still look great.
@Dom_31 They need kid Goku and Piccolo Daimao for sure. Tao Paipai and Master Shen would be cool. Especially if they're including nobody characters like Spopovich.
@Netret0120 I had several friends, all big FF fans, stop part way through. The combat was not complex enough to hold them. That along with poor performance pushed them to stop.
@ChrisDeku do you always dismiss legit criticism from actual fans of Final Fantasy with juvenile comments? Simply because it doesn't agree with your view point? I can see why people love this game but most of (not all) the criticism I'm reading is valid. And it's ok to disagree. No need for insults.
Combat was too basic. No elemental damage/weaknesses. No status effects, which made fighting the Marlboro pointless. Wanna be edgy dialogue. The boss fights were very basic and got old pretty quick. Too much emphasis was put on spectacle.
It looked nice but performed poorly. A few cool characters but also some annoying ones. Overall it's not a bad game. Just not a good Final Fantasy, imo. It's near the bottom of the list for me.
@Smash41 it's not so simple. Look at which games have been exclusive and which are the biggest sellers. I'll bet they overlap and that the top 5 exclusives have sold more than all the multi-platform titles combined.
They need to stop doing numbered releases and just make different Final Fantasy titles. When you attach a number to it you also attach past expectations. I personally thought FF16 was a pure action game with an average story. I was disappointed because it was a numbered entry and contained only the most basic Fisher Price RPG elements. If it was just it's own thing I wouldn't have minded. I guess we'll see what their approach is in the future.
Sadly that distribution deal that was struck a few years ago only applied to everything but original Macross. Harmony Gold still has the rights to anything pertaining to the original show, the movie, and anything that contains those characters. So the content that won't be in the Western release of the game is the Do You Remember Love content. Which sucks because that's my favorite. Harmony Gold sucks.
@CRuSHeR2K I was so excited when it was announced a few years back that the Macross anime would finally start coming west again. Then you found out that included everything except original Macross.....I mean I love all Macross but the original will always be my favorite. And here it is influencing the game now too. Such a bummer.
Great it's getting a release in the West but thanks to Harmony Gold we won't get the full game. I'm still going to import it so I can get the full content. Seeing as how original Macross/DYRL is my favorite part I'm required to!
@ROBLIVION I was trying to play FF16 at 60fps but it looked bad so I switched to 30fps and just swinging the camera around for a bit made me feel nauseous until I adjusted. It happens.
@Korgon It goes both ways as far as attacks. I personally always use Japanese VA when available. But I don't begrudge anyone wanting to listen in English. I just want the option to be there.
I went with an 8 but maybe should have gone with a 7. I just beat it today and enjoyed it. I had my issues with it and I don't see myself playing it again. I enjoyed my time in the game though. I completed almost all the quests, finished all the hunts, and crafted the best gear for a 1st time play through. The main story was fine but not mind blowing. Overall a good game that could be better with some performance patches and more character customization added.
@kedireturns I don't think we'll agree here so I'll end engagement after this comment because you called me a liar which is silly and not true. I never said the game wasn't upscaled. I understand how common (and smart) AI upscaling is in gaming nowadays and I'm here for it. But upscaling from a lower resolution is going to affect output quality. That's a fact.
720p is not considered HD resolution. It hasn't been for years. Yes, it's upscaling it to look better but it's not great. This game probably uses FSR 1 for upscaling which is not very good. It causes all kinds of issues. Read about how many people are pissed about Starfield excluding DLSS and forcing FSR on PC for more info on that.
Again, if none of this bothers you that's great. Not everyone is bothered by these issues and if people are happy that doesn't bother me. Enjoy it! But just because you say it looks great doesn't mean it's true or everyone agrees.
Not sure why you used all caps for some words but here we are. I understand all the data behind the performance and resolution. It can be very choppy when traveling and trying to maintain 1440p. Then just drops to a lower than HD base resolution (720p) in battle to try to maintain 60fps. It can look pretty ugly for a PS5 big budget title during those battles. That's why I stick with fidelity mode despite preferring 60fps.
If that stuff doesn't bother you that's great. Enjoy the game. I'm not trying to take away anyone's enjoyment. Hell, I enjoy the game. But I'm not giving everything a pass because it's Final Fantasy. I have issues with it and those issues are measurable and I'm hoping they get patched out.
@Alpha_Pulse Yeah I wish that difficulty were available from the beginning. I'm not someone that needs a punishing games but I do appreciate a fair challenge. I might do a NG+ playthrough in a few years. There are lots of things I enjoy about the game.
@Nepp67 being honest the combat is like Fisher Price my first action game. The dodge and parry windows are extremely forgiving. I've been playing on 30fps mode because performance mode is too ugly and janky and I've had no issues with combat. Game is easy.
I'm almost 30 hours in. It's a fun action game with very minimal RPG elements. Character customization is too limited for me and the equipment is boring as hell. Long quest chain to build a legendary sword and what do you get? Just more attack and stagger. Dull.
It's not the Final Fantasy I wanted but I am still in enjoying it. Music is great, Japanese VA is on point, and it's got some beautiful art. I don't understand why people keep saying it's a more mature story than previous FF games though. Blood and a bunch of curse words does not a more mature game make.
I don't see myself ever playing it again though. The combat's limited options start to get boring. At this point only my interest in the story keeps me vested. And even that isn't groundbreaking.
@Matroska I guess I should have clarified. I mean to say a version that had any significant changes. There is no real difference as far as performance between the demo and what was released.
@Feena TotK has some very nice looking (for Switch) environments and fog/lighting effects. Not on par with PS5 or XSX of course.
I guess my biggest issue was how they were hyping up how this game was only possible on the PS5 , next gen experience, no day 1 patch, etc. But it turns out to have major performance issues and doesn't push the bar graphically. Nintendo never promised anything like that with TotK.
All that said I enjoyed the demo and am looking forward to playing tomorrow. The game just needs more polish performance wise and I wish the harder difficulty was unlocked from the start because it's way too easy.
@pharos_haven spoiler alert, the performance issues are still there. All that talk about the demo being based on an older version was not true. The 300mb day one patch did almost nothing for performance.
@Feena TotK is on much less powerful hardware and 30fps is the norm on Switch. Gloss over it if you like but the performance on this game is disappointing.
By having such a terrible performance mode I'm essentially forced to play it at 30fps. And I'm ok with 30fps but the motion blur is another bad decision for this title. Looking forward to when they let you turn it off.
@Nepp67 I'll check it out. But without an actual analysis I'll need to play it myself to see if it's different. I don't really trust the opinion of non technical YouTubers. But still the fact remains that the devs have promised to fix performance so that tells me it's still not great. Guess we'll find out in a few days. Still excited for the game!

Overall it's good. Performance during traversal has lots of drops unfortunately. Even when you're in smaller environments like the castle. Graphical fidelity is nice but not mind blowing.
They basically stole the combat from Ys 8/9.
Which is fine because I love Ys.Thankfully combat is usually a solid 60fps. I do find it jarring when those 30fps cinematic dodges/strikes interrupt 60fps combat though. I also think the game is a bit too easy. And no I'm not using any of the trinkets.

Remember Metal Gear Twin Snakes? They added MGS 2 abilities which broke the game because they didn't balance around it. Hopefully not the same here.
I'll buy this when it's $20 because I don't think it's worth $70 which is my choice as a consumer. Others will make a different choice and that's good. Each to their own. I'm honestly not a huge fan of these to begin with.
They are doing a graphical overhaul of the game with no other changes. Essentially a new coat of paint on an existing game and engine. They are bringing in combat aspects from part 2 that have already been developed so nothing new. Charging 70 bucks for fancier graphics is a big ask. @jrt87 I'm a Japanese language forever person. Grew up watching anime in Japanese so it's ingrained. That being said I would never tell someone they didn't truly experience something if they used English voice overs as long as the translation is accurate. We have options for a reason which is great.
The only issue I have with English dubbing is when they change the very nature of what's being said. That can ruin a game. See Working Designs translations for more.

Re: Poll: What Do You Think of the Final Fantasy 16 PS5 Demo?
@Cordyceps That motion blur in 30fps mode hurt my eyes. I tried it because performance mode is so unstable but nope! 30fps mode was worse.
