Zombie games is a flooded market now. You cannot check the Steam home page without several new ones being promoted. I can see why they would apply the gameplay mechanics to a different genre.
@Barry_vV it got second place? SH2 Remake is one of the highest rated games of the year not just as a remake but as a stand alone game. It has the highest Steam average rating of any 2024 big-budget game.
I agree with this mostly. P3R is very fun but the Tartarus slog towards the end game is still not very fun—but that is part and parcel of P3.
Rebirth seems great but I got to the Costa de Sol on launch weekend and all the minigames are too much. I have not played it since.
I really really enjoyed Romancing SaGa2 remake, but evidently I have a minority opinion.
It could be the Alan Wake 2 scenario: sales may have been low, but a third party (Epic/Sony) underwrote so much of the development that the cost to break even was low for a AAA game.
Sam Lake said as much about AW2.
More telling is how many copies they sold of DQ3 remake on what had to be an iota of the budget. Imagine if they could do HD 2D remakes of FF1-2, 5-6, and sell it as 2+ editions for $59.99? Cha ching.
I got 50 some hours in it on Steam. It is definitely fun if you can handle games where you largely do the same objectives on the same handful of maps repeatedly. Like a lot of the games in the genre, there is really no plot. Saying this as someone with both an AOS and 40k army painted.
A recent update added a weapon-base progression system that should keep newer players engaged longer.
With Spider Man 2 hitting PC in basically a year, the value proposition for this is nonexistent to me.
The PS4 Pro and other endeavors showed us the studios associated with Sony will add perks for the better model, but not many others.
This Pro has roughly the same processor as the original. The graphics upscaling stuff is the same rain-dancing nonsense we see on PC with every non-DLSS upscaler system: it can look good, but 99% of developers opt for out of the box implementation that looks hammy.
If PS games hit PC in a year, I will just wait. FF16 on my computer is night and day better than it is on my usual PS5, and benches better than the Pro.
I put a lot of hours into my playthrough. I wish the game let you mulligan dice rolls every now and then, because my time played doing everything I can find was 106 hours… no way someone is gonna accept really terrible roles that ruin entire storylines because “I guess I will do it in the next 106 hour playthrough I will do sometime probably after 2050.”
By the end the amount of time reloading saves or simply accepting missed quests and rolling my eyes, it kinda had me irritated and disappointed with the finale. The entire Third Act in the city itself was just way way too prone to one bad dice roll cascading into you getting pissed off as it ruined a quest here and there (for those who don’t know, third act had more side quests than the rest of the game)
@Matthewnh gameplay repetition aside, its basically a virtual recreation of Hogwarts and Hogsmeade. It will probably continue to sell and not go dead for a very long time for no other reason, until Gen Alpha and those after with zero HP awareness become the primary gamers.
I am not disappointed but because my expectations here are lower than others: I expect the referenced dungeons end up being like the Tartarus romps where sure the floors and sections vary but you truly aren’t missing anything if you blitz through 99% of the floor every time.
If this is the case, it won’t matter if I only see a fraction of all possible dungeons.
@Maubari many retailers are removing physical media from their stores. It doesn’t matter if we like to play on discs. Game devs make money on physical by retailers buying the copies, not us.
Sony can also price fix their online store. Want a game? You pay what they want. No paying out a cut like on Steam—in fact Sony can charge third party devs to be on their platform.
Persona games are aloof and sort of lean into the corniness.
Probably a wise idea if they would have literally used Persona style romances in this game. And it is possible the team do not know how to do it any other way and don’t want to subcontract in some consultants like Sweet Baby to do it for them.
@Medic_alert Lego games are very popular with kids, and parents are not buying a $500 console with a handful at best of kids games they cannot get on Switch to play one Lego game.
Warhammer fans always show up. Been hoping for another TW historical game from the masthead studio but they will be making WH and 40k stuff forever. That is a fandom that buys up stuff.
@amatmulisha odyssey is IMHO the last truly great AC. Valhalla is fun but if your tired of Odyssey its more of that in a much larger game.
Mirage is fun but its basically a gigantic DLC of Valhalla… but way more emphasis on the stealth. Running into battle in Mirage means you are dead (like the OG AC)
Gamers downvote and refund everything all the time. Its just about normal unless its a meme game on Twitch.
People ranting about respect for history in a game series where you single handedly win the Peloponosian war, cartoonishly inaccurate and anachronistic collection of mythic and historical people in early medieval England, the Pope hid a gigantic futuristic super computer in Old St. Peter’s, etc.
From what I could tell playing its open access… platinum would not have expanded the player base. I am not a FPS god but I’m no slouch and those lobbies (game matches without ranking or skill levels) are like playing CS as your first shooter. Most people are going 1-15 for a few matches and uninstalling. A platinum to win like 100 matches or whatever would only interest the pros.
I like most Ubi games but this one is dead on arrival with its current lobby system.
Doesn’t matter. The name of my department changed once after 30 years and now it changes every time we get a new VP. No one really cares except the people who changed it and think it shows how powerful/smart they are.
They could call it ABC123 HOLDINGS LLP and as long as they make good games its all good.
@BigJoze I also found that quote odd. The PS3 COD games had prestiging, as did RDR1. In many ways they were a free Day 1 version of a battle pass—each time you reset, you unlocked things faster but at higher levels the rewards were cooler.
I distinctly remember RDR1 having a zebra mount that was ridiculously fast if you put insane amounts of time in grinding. I put hundreds of hours in and never got close.
It cuts both ways. It can be engaging when its new but then you get a steep fall off. I recently went deep deep into Destiny 2. While I still enjoy it, having done the main campaigns and now doing the seasonal campaign, there is a lot of stuff that clearly has no respect for your time. Repetition or a very long sequence where you only die if at all right at the end and then have to redo 7-8 minutes of tedious reclear to hit the challenge.
I am not sold on the new expansion yet mostly because I get the feeling this “playtime is king” ethos will make the game feel like wasted time.
This is precisely why most MMOs drop off like a rock after the first two months. The new content is stale and redoing it endlessly has no appeal.
For every WoW, Destiny, Fortnite/Apex, FC/Madden there are untold dozens of similar games trying to cash in on “playtime and engagement” and end up with player counts lower than a DOS emulation of King’s Quest IV.
As a primarily PC gamer I hope they really think through Day 1 launches. Consolers, and especially Sony gamers with FF games, provide developers more deference and leeway for performance issues. Both recent FF AAA titles had some rather rough performance for being made in close assistance with Sony’s experts.
PC gamers are a fickle bunch. When SE inevitably has an even harder time on Day 1 for all the multitude of CPU/GPU/OS versions in play, the PC crowd mercilessly downvote and refund their games en masse. I am a PC gamer mostly so I am not saying this to insult consolers or PC people… just saying its NOT as easy as “put et on Steemz Dey 1 lulz”
@UltimateOtaku91 basically this. What they want is Persona 4 Reload, Persona 5 Royal with Cheese, Persona 3 Female Player Reload Remaster, etc. kinda like how SMT5 is gonna come out again in a remaster in few weeks and its a current-gen game.
These are amazing games but people will tune em out if this is the standard.
@Ralizah I see it differently. In a year or so GOW:R will be on PC for $69.99…. At that point its a 3 year old PS4 game that you can find for $15.99.
People willing to wait 3 years to play it were never hyped to buy it barring the PS4/PS5 ownership requirement. Anyone who was dying to play it has done so. You have to be trolling yourself to pay 2022 brand new prices at that point. Its like buying a three year old car with wear for brand new price.
The Sony strategy is VERY different from MS. They released their big budget game Starfield on PC. Those games usually sell for $69.99. Since it was on GP? You could play it a month and clear all the original content for $9.99. They lost a ton of money with their Day 1 GP philosophy.
Most gaming today is done on a Switch or Mobile. All of us bickering between ourselves about PC versus console are like men talking up their preferred long-distance horse as Model Ts are rolling off the line.
My latest build cost $1,400 and I had the chassis, fans, SSDs, and PSU.
@Dodoo The other poster is being dramatic. Expecting a 2.5 month old $70 single player game to place high on charts is just ridiculous. Everyone who wanted it, bought it. Most of the sales of FF7Re, DD2, and assumedly Stellar Blade happen the first week or two. Its not a service game like HD2 where stuff is always happening and people are joining in with their buddies.
Comparing to FO4 is equally ridiculous. The game is on the coattails of a popular TV show and was being sold for a couple bucks. One of the old Need For Speeds placed the other month because it was on sale for 90% off. It doesn’t mean NFS’s 2018 game is the pinnacle of 2024 gaming content…
@somnambulance IIRC buying copies of GTA5 gets you the ingame currency sometimes at cheaper rates than if you bought it on the shop (depending on sales of the game).
Im not gonna go for Part 3. At least not until its eventually on PC and on sale. The direction with the story and the pacing of the game itself with all the minigames and padding just was off to me.
Never got into this game but have many games on Steam and many that require these sort of logins.
A lot of the people complaining are Steam shills I would assume, who do not tell you or are too ignorant to know all your purchase and gameplay data harvested by Steam is marketed and sold to companies that use its platform.
I have about 200 games on Steam and am not stupid. The day will come when Valve is bought out, and the service will become like any other corporate platform. A lot of gamers are just ignorant or naive.
I personally did not like the game. I won’t launch into why here. However, I bought it launch day. Since then?
20 hours in Rebirth 52 hours in FFX 41 hours FFXII
I am just one consumer and cannot speak for anyone else, but I have told people in the weeks since its been out that I personally would not buy it if I had a second chance. That word of mouth can matter in a game tappering off.
@KeanuReaves I think the point is that you cannot look at Rebirth’s budget and profit in a silo if you have a business background.
Games like Rebirth end up covering other experiments that fail. Same reason an auto maker having a top rated in-class car with tons of sales can also happen when the company is staring down bankruptcy due to the rest of their production being stinkers.
The show hits on the reality that Bethesda bought an amazing IP with good world building. The best 3D Fallouts are a toss between FO3 (16 years old) and FONV (also older, not made by Bethesda).
They always have Daggerfall lol. Some of those female sprites were completely nude.
Had not been following this game much. Was there seriously people looking to buy this largely as an alternative to erotic content? Seems like a steep price for what was on offer pre-update.
I just got into Destiny! Really enjoying it. One thing I would love them to update is exotic acquisition.
There is a really good bow called Wish Ender. I am considering getting it as I am done with every campaign and doing the bounties and getting items… the thing is this item requires doing an outdated dungeon that basically nobody does ever, and you need to do specific actions in that dungeon.
I like the idea of older items still being useful, but maybe have us do the current dungeon instead? Otherwise newer players are in a paradox where one of the better items for entry level endgame content was best obtained years ago.
I can tell you that this sort of conundrum is exactly why games like WoW just reset the loot every expansion. You don’t feel like you needed to be there 6 years ago to get the statistically good items.
It is not make or break for me, but its one of those things where the only challenge in getting something like Wish Ender is that now you basically have to solo a group dungeon with no respawning allowed… when it was current I imagine every single player ended up with it by nature of everyone doing the current dungeon daily.
The problem isn’t that people don’t enjoy the grind but that the grind is not fun.
To me this is a way to have these GaaS games feel alive by always having “players” buzzing about the zones for largely no reason. I get it from a developer perspective. In an MMO or season-based GaaS, if the starter area and big city is sparse, I am gone.
But it doesn’t fix the problem. These AI botted accounts won’t join groups or if they do I highly doubt they can compently coordinate with player controlled characters to defeat bosses.
Doesn’t matter how many years those FF games have been on there. Those specific games defined PS in their day. Their deletion is like Xbox delisting some Halo games or Nintendo axing Mario games from the service.
The service dozers these games then provides shovelware. Sony has to decide if it cares about this service or not. Right now it seems like they are being cajoled into offering a subscription service at all.
They just bought some studios so it makes sense. This always happens. When two companies merge you don’t need two independent legal, accounting, HR, administrative departments.
If you are a HUGE Fallout fan, it is basically a very hollowed out Destiny 2/Division style game. You will probably be taken aback at how little it resembles the games in terms of cities, quests, content, etc.
Bear in mind that at its core this game is still built around a system where quests were given by computers and NPCs were almost entirely enemies.
Now if you are just a general gamer looking for a short time sink, it can be fun for that. At its core though it was designed to be a live service looter shooter, not an open world RPG.
@NEStalgia true but that also sums up most games. My buddy HATES live service games, and asked why Im playing Destiny 2 when it will end or have stuff removed… my answer was most people beat a game and seldom ever come back to it. He sort of acknowledged that. In today’s world very very few people only play a single game forever. Whether its FF7R, Elden Ring, or Helldivers/Destiny/TheDivision. We play till the main content has been seen then we move on.

Re: Square Enix's New AAA Games Are Being Trounced by Final Fantasy 14

It is not make or break for me, but its one of those things where the only challenge in getting something like Wish Ender is that now you basically have to solo a group dungeon with no respawning allowed… when it was current I imagine every single player ended up with it by nature of everyone doing the current dungeon daily.
Re: EA Japan Exec Criticises Rating Board for Apparent Stellar Blade Special Treatment
EA probably didn’t include sufficient money in the bribe envelope. The Stellar Blade team did.
Unfortunately that’s how some of these government offices function.
Re: Latest Sony Patent Wants to Take the Grind Out of Games by Playing Them For You
The problem isn’t that people don’t enjoy the grind but that the grind is not fun.

Re: Huge PS Plus Clearout Confirmed for May, 25 Games Leaving
Doesn’t matter how many years those FF games have been on there. Those specific games defined PS in their day. Their deletion is like Xbox delisting some Halo games or Nintendo axing Mario games from the service.
The service dozers these games then provides shovelware. Sony has to decide if it cares about this service or not. Right now it seems like they are being cajoled into offering a subscription service at all.

Re: GTA Publisher Laying Off 5% of Workforce and Cancelling 'Several' Games
They just bought some studios so it makes sense. This always happens. When two companies merge you don’t need two independent legal, accounting, HR, administrative departments.
Re: Video: Is Fallout 76 Worth Playing in 2024?
If you are a HUGE Fallout fan, it is basically a very hollowed out Destiny 2/Division style game. You will probably be taken aback at how little it resembles the games in terms of cities, quests, content, etc.
Bear in mind that at its core this game is still built around a system where quests were given by computers and NPCs were almost entirely enemies.
Now if you are just a general gamer looking for a short time sink, it can be fun for that. At its core though it was designed to be a live service looter shooter, not an open world RPG.
Re: UK Sales Charts: Helldivers 2 Returns to Top 10 in Quiet Week for New PS5, PS4 Releases
