Re: 2,800+ PS5, PS4 Games Going Cheap in New PS Store Summer Sale

John_Deacon

@Robocod They will only let you buy it when your subscription expires and you are not able to play the game through PS Plus. This system totally sucks, I know, but that's the way it is, unfortunately. Apparently, they just hate the idea that you use the subscription to try new games then buy the ones you like... Maybe because they wanna milk our money month after month till the end of time...

Re: Rumour: Unforgettable RPG Dragon Quest 7 Tipped for PS5 Release

John_Deacon

@rjejr yeah, and it's pretty curious to read that is "without question". The PS1 library has sooo many great RPGs that this statement is a joke, especially because DQ7 tends to become a chore given its absurd length. And all games you mentioned in your first comment are better than DQ7 (that's my opinion).

I'm beginning to think the "without question" was used for the sheer sake of engagement

Re: Brazilian Gamers Infuriated by Sudden PS5 Price Hikes

John_Deacon

@Jacko11 That's such a narrow view. While in the UK people earn 12,21 pounds an hour, in Brazil they get something around 0,92 pounds an hour. I'm not sure if that sounds reasonable for you, but we don't get on a whole day what you get in one hour, which makes every comparison unfair.
From a colonialist viewpoint, that's 17 pounds cheaper than in the UK for a game, while from a realistic point of view, Brazilians have an abyss to cross

Re: Brazilian Gamers Infuriated by Sudden PS5 Price Hikes

John_Deacon

@Jey887 And the only economic argument they just can't offer is: what are we, as customers, getting? Having a company make record profits means absolutely nothing if that doesn't mean high level games, a good number of decent releases (not so many remakes/remasters), better services, affordable games and services, that is, actual improvement. Because I feel we're getting just the opposite. We're paying more and getting less while I see more and more people defending company's results. It's disgusting for me

Re: Fans Can't Believe PS5 Has Made More Profit Than All Previous PlayStations Combined

John_Deacon

@Ilyn @LogicStrikesAgain It's all very simple: I will never celebrate how much a company makes, but what I get from this company, the value I get out of their products. With the PS5 generation, I have been paying more for my hobby and receiving less out of fewer options (fewer releases that interest me) or steep products, such as the Nintendo Switch 2 and their $80 games, which made me postpone my purchase. If I were getting the same and paying more, that could be justified because of inflation, tariffs, whatever, but that's not the case because I'm getting less for more money. People might celebrate companies' financial achievements, but as a customer, I see no reason to celebrate

Re: Fans Can't Believe PS5 Has Made More Profit Than All Previous PlayStations Combined

John_Deacon

the PS5’s financial success is somewhat at odds with enthusiast consumer sentiment right now.

Many people I know are dissatisfied with how Sony has been treating their loyal customers when it comes to 1st-party titles. I know the world doesn't revolve around me but I see the same sort of comment all over the internet. Not by just any kind of gamer, but by loyal Sony customers. Based on these figures, we'll end up having to make a hard decision: swallowing this change or abandoning Sony. What's very clear for me is: Sony has already made their decision and they just couldn't care less about the number of 1st-party single-player titles they've been releasing. The numbers make them comfortable about their decisions. Things have changed, and they're far far worse now in my opinion, but the decision is only ours now. Sony has made theirs: catalogue, game quality, player's experience, loyalty, those all come second. What comes first is money, and that they're getting, so the problem is ours now

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 585

John_Deacon

The Messenger - 100% the base game again, now I'm playing the super fun DLC, which is a really hard challenge to collect everything. After 7 years, this game remains an indie masterpiece. Everything I'm it screams passion and quality
Bloodstained Ritual of the Night - unfortunately this one still doesnt offer a 100% smooth experience on the Switch, so I only use my day one physical copy as a piece of decoration and play it on the PS5 for a decent experience. Albeit not in its title nor in its budget, it's a wonderful Castlevania experience that deserves to be played and replayed
Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo - a really cool metroidvania by a Brazilian studio that oozes charm with a lot of great old school references. It's skill tree and improvements make it a very interesting game, super fun!
Kaze and the Wild Masks - a wonderful tribute to classic platforming with great controls, old school level design and beautiful pixel art. This one adds great challenge in case you want to collect everything it has to offer. It's great fun both for a casual playthrough or to collect all letters and items

Re: Hands On: MindsEye Is a Boring Mess

John_Deacon

@12AngryCats Yeah, I was like "There's a huge number of worse looking ones around". Performance like this is something I'd expect to find on a Switch 1 version, with fps set to 30 at most, but not always reaching this number

Re: Round Up: What Was Announced at Summer Game Fest 2025?

John_Deacon

Well, I know I'm in the minority here and, of course, obviously, without a shadow of a doubt, everybody (myself included) is looking forward to new AAA exclusives by Santa Monica, From, Insomniac, maybe Square, etc, but considering what was announced in State of Play and Summer Game Fest, and the odd Microsoft game popping up occasionally, there's just no scarcity of games to play, at least for me. Honestly, I'll have to filter the list of games I wanna play because I won't have time to play them all

Re: PS Plus Premium Gets 2 Classic PS1 Adventure Games, Both Out Now

John_Deacon

I stopped spending on Premium or Extra because, just like Netflix and other services, I dont use it enough to justify a subscription. Right now I'm paying for the Essential tier to have the basic features and the monthly giveaway games, and this kind of announcement doesn't make me want to come back to a more expensive tier

Re: First MindsEye PS5 Copies Leak, Dev Stresses to Wait for Day 1 Patch

John_Deacon

@Simu001 There's a new stage to this strategy now: "Sell now, don't fix it. Wait for a 'new' gen console". That's what happened with Pokemon Scarlet/Violet. Now they're announcing some improvements, but just for the Switch 2 version. If that becomes a standard, we'll soon be waiting for 4 years to be able to play a game in a decent state, but just if we agree to fork out some hundreds of bucks to have the new machine

Re: Beloved, Brutal Metroidvania Nine Sols Is on the Approach to Selling 1 Million Copies

John_Deacon

@Oram77 And if we take Doom the Dark Ages, for example, we're kind of in the dark about its success. Id Software said the game "reached" 3 million players days after it came out. All right. Good number. Better then Doom Eternal. But then Alinea Analytics reported the game sold 200,000 copies on PlayStation 5, 200,000 on Xbox, and 400,000 on Steam, and that 2.2 million players played the game through Game Pass. My question is: with 800,000 copies sold and 2.2mi players accessing it through a subscription service, is it a hit or not?

Re: Best SEGA Games on PS5

John_Deacon

@Judal27 year, I feel just the same. These games deserve way better scores, especially Shin Megami Tensei V, which doesn't even have a score yet

Re: Reaction: There's Never Been a Better Time to Buy a PS5

John_Deacon

@dskatter I know we're in the minority here, but I try to avoid gaming services like the plague. Until the last day they let us buy the games we want, that's what I'll do. So, for me (which is the same for you, based on what you said in your comment), GP is not an advantage for Xbox, although I know it is for millions of people... Let's keep on fighting

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 582

John_Deacon

Resident Evil (2002 remake) - finishing a playthrough as Jill and starting another one as Chris
Alwa's Awakening - getting the final upgrade and entering the final área. I just love this game and its sequel!
Crash Bandicoot 4 - playing through the final world. This is a wonderful platformer, just the way it should be, in a glorious return. Superb level design, a true labor or love! My favorite Crash game.
Kirby's Return to Dreamland - Deluxe - playing this one in short bursts, looking for all the cogs. It's really relaxing!

Re: Talking Point: Does Sony Really Need Some Kind of Summer Showcase?

John_Deacon

@arsmolinarc I totally agree with you. Spending hundreds and hundreds of millon of dollars in a single project and expecting 20 million people to buy every game you release is simply unsustainable - and unrealistic. As you said, AA might provide the perfect combination for a better path with a light at the end of the tunnel: still good productions values with no extreme costs

Re: Talking Point: Does Sony Really Need Some Kind of Summer Showcase?

John_Deacon

@twitchtvpat I can only imagine running one of the biggest gaming businesses in history is no piece of cake, but companies that become staples in a given industry should never "turn their backs" on those who supported them to become what they are now

What I mean is: release your remasters, remake the game you consider viable for that, invest in GaaS, but never stop listening to your community. Most of the community that has supported you so far are now adults who have grown up supporting the Playstation brand and developing love for their favorite franchises. The gaming business has become so big that Ubisoft considered Sparks of Hope a failure because it sold "only" 3 million copies on the Switch - interestingly, the previous installment sold 2m. I can't get that. Likewise, Activision canceled future Crash bandicoot releases because Crash 4 (my favorite in the whole series) sold "only" 5 million. This is crazy, man. It's not because one installment "failed", whatever that means, that you're gonna drop the series. If the previous Killzone sold 1.5 million, maybe the next one will sell 8. The same may hold true for a game that sells 10 million copies - a future installment might flop and sell 2m. That's part of the game. And that's exactly why you must have a whole deck of cards on the table. It's a hard balancing act, I know, but this is just my point of view

Re: Beloved Ex-PlayStation Boss Believes $70, $80 Games Are a Steal

John_Deacon

@Darude84 It has everything to do, man. It's impossible to pay a premium price for a game and receive a product that's not premium. When the price goes up, the bar goes up, too.
See, I'm not saying every AAA game is broken or unfinished on launch day, but many are, and day 1 or week 1 patches have become a staple. Unfortunately, some problems aren't solved immediately, and that sucks big time. All in all, an unfinished or bugged game isn't premium. If you wanna a premium price for your product, deliver a premium product. That's the way it should be.

It's not acceptable for a $20 game to be released in a bad state, either. But big companies with huge budgets and large dev teams have all the resources in the world to do something good, so they must always deliver a great product. We tolerate delays, but not an unfinished game

Re: Beloved Ex-PlayStation Boss Believes $70, $80 Games Are a Steal

John_Deacon

That's common for people at the top: they lose touch with the reality of those who are at the bottom. Selling an incomplete (and sometimes unfinished) game for $80 is outrageous. If you add DLC and season pass(es), the final price will be over $100. No wonder people (like me) wait for sales or buy second hand physical media

Re: Like It or Loathe It, This Is Why Sony Won't Stop Trying to Make Live Service Games for PS5

John_Deacon

If Sony finds its golden goose, then it’s not going to come at the expense of the single player games we know and love; if nothing else, it’s going to help the platform holder bankroll said risky projects for years to come.

I'd love to, but I just can't agree with the view you're presenting here. You're too optimistic. Risky projects for them today means trying out just one more live service game, not a single player one or funding a "different" project. Risk = a new attempt on a possible new hit to become another golden goose. Single player experiences, as far as I'm concerned, seem to be confined to the endless remasters/remakes they've been releasing (which I enjoy but think should never be the majority of the production a giant like Sony is focused on). New single player games? New franchises? Why bother? Maybe once every five years. It's hard to nail a new one. Better try a new Concord, Marathon or the like.

And the great risk here is if Sony indeed has a hit. Then, investors will very likely push even harder towards more and more live services. "Let's try ten games now. If one is a hit, we're happy". For me, there's absolutely no optimism considering the scenario we've been experiencing.

Just to give two examples of how live services are a huge thing now involving people close to me:

  • I have a friend who owns a PS5 only to play Fifa. He buys the yearly release as soon as it comes out, usually the premium version, and has no problems with in-game micro transactions
  • another friend of mine bought a PS5 Pro and now lets his 8-year old use his base PS5. My friend's a collector, spends a lot on his hobby and is ok with his boy buying everything game-related, included skins and whatever. Whenever I turn on my PS5, the boy is online playing Roblox.

These are just two examples around me. I can't even imagine how big this microtransaction market is. It's scary. And worse than that, it's so real now
