But with its annual Days of Play promotion, a wildly successful annual marketing initiative which has been running since around 2017, the manufacturer has gone for the jugular and actually reduced prices of its PS5 consoles. It’s never been a better time to buy one.
If you’ve been in the market for a PS5 Pro, for example, you can now get one for £654.99/$649.99 until 11th June. That makes the supercharged system, with significantly enhanced hardware capabilities, just $50 more than a bog-standard Xbox Series X.
And if you’re not interested in the top-of-the-line model, then you can get a Digital Edition PS5 Slim for $399.99 with Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 included in the United States. That’s $30 less than the underpowered 1TB Xbox Series S, with no games included. In the UK, you’ll pay just £339.99 for the Digital Edition until the aforementioned date.
Now this is a temporary promotion, so it’s not like it’s a price cut. And to be fair, the numbers being thrown around are still higher than what we’d expect from a console at this point in its generation. But compared to what’s happening elsewhere in the industry, some of these deals are bordering on no-brainers.
Here’s the thing: we do still think there’s the potential of a price increase in the future, as Sony is not resistant to everything else that’s happening in the industry. Does it seem better prepared than its rivals? Yes, stockpiling inventory was a 4D chess move that’s temporarily shielded it from the tariff chaos – but it won’t be safe forever.
So, there’s really never been a better time to get a PS5, because aside from potential Black Friday deals, you’re not going to be able to get one cheaper than what you can right now. And who knows what will have happened economically by 28th November.
But price aside, why is this the best time to buy a PS5? Well, because the library is already huge and the upcoming software slate looks strong. While some have been critical of Sony’s first-party lineup, let’s not forget this year sees the release of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Ghost of Yotei ; last year the platform holder launched the undisputed Game of the Year in Astro Bot .
And then looking further afield there’s upcoming software like Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and Marvel’s Wolverine , as well as a little game called GTA 6 , which won’t even be available on PC day one.
Sony’s consoles tend to come into their own late in the generation, and while the company’s bone headed live service initiatives have disrupted this cycle, we’d still expect a strong end to the generation from the likes of Guerrilla Games, Santa Monica Studio, and more. There’s still a lot of life left in the PS5 yet.
And it’s worth mentioning, if you’re a newcomer to the PlayStation ecosystem – a significant number of players are, according to Sony’s own data – then the PS Store is quite literally a goldmine of great content these days. You could get a system and happily entertain yourself for years with the thousands upon thousands of cut-price titles available on the platform holder’s storefront these days.
There’s a lot of doom and gloom about PS5 and the industry at large, but there’s really never been a better time to buy Sony’s current system. Pundits may not have expected the platform holder to cut prices while the rest of the industry moves in the opposite direction, but that’s exactly what’s happened during Days of Play. Don’t miss out!
