Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection Has More Games to Reveal, But Don't Hold Your Breath for PS2 Era 1

Digital Eclipse’s upcoming documentary-like Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection still has more games to reveal, but perhaps don’t expect the PS2 era of games to make the grade.

Speaking with IGN at Evo this weekend, Head of Production Stephen Frost revealed:

“We try to include as many games as we can, and usually the only reason we don’t include them is technological, emulation, licensing, or legal issues. But fundamentally, we’re trying to stay focused on the arcade era. We have to start the story somewhere. There’s a huge number of fans of Mortal Kombat 9, but you can’t just jump immediately there. Especially from our perspective of telling the studio’s story and moving forward, it’s important for us to build a foundation of where this franchise came from, and move from there.”

Frost did clarify, however, that there are a “number of games” it hasn’t announced yet, and we’ll learn more at both Gamescom and PAX later in the year.

He also teased the compilation could be supported with DLC, much like its excellent Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration:

“Hopefully this release is as successful as we hope it will be and that paves the way for potentially more and more of Mortal Kombat.”

Frost wouldn’t confirm which missing games will be included, but our guess is the PS1 spin-offs Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero and Mortal Kombat: Special Forces. We suppose there’s a chance of the Dreamcast’s Mortal Kombat Gold, too.

As a recap, here are all the games that have been confirmed for the compilation so far:

  • Mortal Kombat – 1992: Arcade, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, Game Gear
  • Mortal Kombat II 1993: Arcade, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, 32X
  • Mortal Kombat 3 – 1995: Arcade, SNES, Genesis
  • Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 – 1995: Arcade, SNES
  • Mortal Kombat Trilogy – 1996: PS1
  • Mortal Kombat 4 – 1997: Arcade
  • Mortal Kombat Advance – 2001: Game Boy Advance
  • Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance – 2002: Game Boy Advance
  • Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition – 2003: Game Boy Advance
