@Questionable_Duck My point was simply that indie games existed well before digital, which you agree with. As you say it could perhaps have been stated clearer or it was a misunderstanding in the first place.
@Questionable_Duck Of course people bought them. But anyway, you seem to have abandoned the original claim you made that digital was responsible for the birth of indie games (it wasn't, they originated physically) and that you had to find a publisher to print discs (you didn't, anyone could put their game on a floppy and post it out).
The indie games scene was born decades ago on physical media. People used to copy tapes and floppy discs, advertise cheaply in the back of games magazines, get demos on cover discs with shareware.
It's generous to call it a mistake. It was during Covid when there was a uniquely high demand for big games, CDPR made a ton of money, they knew it wasn't ready.
If it was a mistake you have to believe CDPR somehow didn't know how badly it ran (and IIRC there were leaks from frustrated playtesters confirming they knew). I believe it was a deliberate calculated decision that a rushed launch and mea culpa would pay off financially, and it did.
That said, I respect that they made it right, I thoroughly enjoyed Cyberpunk and the DLC was amazing but the games industry is very cynical, so I tend to view their decisions through the same lens.
Great, this making games thing is silly, lets just cancel the whole thing. Obviously there aren't millions of people throwing hundreds of billions at companies to make more. What on earth would they need developers for?
I honestly just don't understand it. The games industry is financially bigger than ever and yet it's job losses everywhere. This can't all be live service fallout.
I feel like GTA has taken a large chunk of the driving games market - a lot of stuff people would do in games involving cars can already be found in one of the biggest games of all time.
They may be optional but I had no way of knowing first time playing just how many mini games there were going to be, and by the time I was sick of them it was already too late. If I knew how many there would be I would have skipped some earlier on.
I can't decide if I want to play Crimson Desert. Half the things I hear intrigue me, but half put me off. I'm taking a wait and see approach as people seem to have valid complaints over performance.
The trophy lovers probably drink inferior coffee because the place has loyalty stamps. Their lives are hard enough without this. And for those of us who don't need trophies at least if they add them it saves us from this EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
"companies now are looking for the next Fortnite. They need something that is a perennial moneymaker…"
And how is that going? They keep losing money hand over fist and so far no "next Fortnite" has been found.
"something like a single-player package game with no live-service offering, that’s like, it’s just a dinosaur fossil of a business model."
And yet one which Capcom is rocking. As a Dead Space fan I felt Pragmata was not a million miles away, just a brighter sci fi skin. I was riding trams, exploring a place in space where things went wrong, hanging around in airlocks, fighting things that make you go "what the hell is that?". Even one of the suits paid tribute!
Yes and yes (I own it and want a sequel). I think its success comes down to the excellent timing, price and length which make it an attractive impulse buy.
It's a solid game that's mostly been done before but they get the balance of story, exploration and combat just right with just enough new things to keep it interesting.
@nessisonett I think they were misquoting Albert Einstein, who was talking scientifically anyway, or else everyone currently trying for a baby is insane!
When people say don't sleep about games - it's never going to sell out, it will come down in price, bugs will be fixed and patched...dude, I'm totally sleeping!
Every time I see his face and it isn't telling me we're getting another Fallout or ES game I mark a notch on the mysteriously shaped bone hung from a silver cord around my neck. Over many eons this bone has become scored a thousand times and a thousand times more, the power within it builds and the time of judgement is near.
I very much encourage Todd to get to work, for all of our sakes.
It's not that other people like trophies, everyone is different, have at them, it's the total writing off or slating a game because it doesn't have them which grates on people who love the game for itself.
There's lots of "that would be like" false equivalencies here. It would be more like having diet or low fat versions of food and people being annoyed saying "but they're supposed to have sugar!". You never have to touch the version you don't like. RE has a dark aesthetic style, exploration and puzzle based gameplay, combat, and anxiety inducing sections. The idea of optionally toning down the anxiety so more people could enjoy the rest doesn't seem that terrible. There's a lot of purity policing and gatekeeping in the gaming community.
That said I'm loving RE9 Requiem with all horror intact, just saying it wouldn't upset me at all if there were more options, same as I'm playing on Normal and don't mind there's a Casual mode.
Besides, this is just a throwaway comment. Why are people not getting upset over Ink Ribbons being optional? They're also a huge part of the series history and gameplay strategy and yet it seems most people are happy to have the option of doing away with them!
@nessisonett Retro Replay in Norwich is full of arcade machines, two floors, pay once for full access. No bar.
@Oram77 It pains me so much that Resident Evil 3 was apparently cut short when originally developed so they could rush it out to capitalise on the success of RE2, and then they did a short remake. Why do they keep doing RE3 dirty?
@4fold Fantastic news! I'm interested but don't really play twin stick shooters, so this literally makes the difference between skipping the game and allowing me to dive in! Options are good.
I think a lot of people are unaware that Polyphony are basically an R&D department for Sony that also produce a racing game.
There's a long history going back to the PS1 where Sony used PD to develop the Performance Analyser dev tool, and more recently PD were heavily involved in HDR and VR (which is why GT is so good in PSVR).
I loved my PS VR when I was using it for a few things that it worked well for, but a lot of things were ported and not built from the ground up and it didn't quite work properly.
I would buy a PS VR 2 if it was cheap enough, but the other side is you have to spend a fair bit on games which are often short and hit and miss.
Regardless of how good people thought Bluepoint was as a studio, or if the story is "Gamers moan about remakes" I fail to accept that Bluepoint would be a loss making studio if it was simply pumping out remakes of popular old Sony IP.
I could easily see Sony upping the price of Premium (squeezing Portal users) and Extra (GamePass price increases allow some headroom) and perhaps keeping Essential the same price to claim they are "keeping prices low" for PR purposes and to prevent pricing people out.
Change it up like the FFVII remakes, otherwise there isn't much point. The original games already exist, look fine, are what they are. I was never interested in that tedious endless waves of combat play style and much prefer what they did with the newer games.
I only played Rave Racer once in an arcade far from home. It was ok but I didn't get to explore much of what it had to offer so am really interested in this.
I always expected it to come to PS1 back in the day but loved Rage Racer so much it didn't matter.

I will probably check it out, but after doin the main game I feel very much like @Dimey - it's very repetetive and grindy if you want to complete it fully after getting the ending.
I know there are plans for an all new one, but three games could be Ecco 1+2 & Jr (which was a simplified but cosy chill version actually worth a play)
