Re: UK Video Game Retailer GAME Will Reportedly Stop Stocking Video Games

DarkTron

@get2sammyb in the last 10 years the vinyl industry has gone from niche to outselling CDs for most artists.
We're still printing DVDs nearly 20 years after they've been supplanted as the best physical format.
The same thing's been said about books for years ("why have a book when you can have a Kindle?") yet they're thriving.

I think your opinion is more speculative than anything that's based on trends, and this is coming from a fansite of the only company that bank on physical media being wanted (Sony having an interest in the Blu-Ray market means they'll always be trying to combine those products). And based on all the other "dying" formats, there's a fairly confident reasoning that they'll be kept around.

Re: Silly Speculation Alleges Sony May Have Signed Secret PS5 Exclusivity for Black Myth: Wukong

DarkTron

@themightyant There's legitimate basis for assuming the Series S is causing the problem, because we've seen multiple indie devs claim the exact same issues, and Microsoft's requirements for feature parity across its consoles is already known. This is the exact same scenario as BG3 last year; Larian outright said the Series S was causing issues (specifically split-screen), and Microsoft had to specifically allow Larian to remove these features for the S build. That's why this "rumour" is the most claimed; it's the only one with basis.

@Vaako007 at some point, it's going to be accepted that developers are somewhat reasonable in feeling that having to develop for 2 specific Microsoft platforms (whilst maintaining this feature parity and performance) is a little excessive. There's also a fair reasoning that games are getting more-and-more complex and powerful, whilst also being held back by the idea that the game has to be able to run on Xbox Series S if you even want to release it on Xbox (for example, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is reportedly only 25% bigger than the original, because the that's the best that can be done on Series S).

Re: MultiVersus (PS5) - Fun Free-to-Play Fighter Is Finally Fit for Purpose

DarkTron

@sorteddan because the early missions give out a significant amount of Character Points, but once you've obtained them the rewards drop off. I've played for 3 hours and am about the same as you, but about 80% of the time has been grinding after the purchase, and I've gone through all of the easy missions to get them. It's going to be that the time taken from 1-2 is longer than time taken from 2-3, so it's not really representative that your first character took shorter than expected.

Re: Dragon Ball XenoVerse 2 PS5 Version Out Now, Free Upgrade from PS4

DarkTron

@rjejr have done it myself, no issue with the transfer (just need the save file on the console, then after the opening cinematic, log in as normal and it prompts if you want to import the PS4 save. Trophies mostly carry over (the ones that didn't on my end were quick tutorial-esque ones , nothing game-breaking).

Re: Dragon Ball XenoVerse 2 PS5 Version Out Now, Free Upgrade from PS4

DarkTron

Few inconsistencies in the article:

1. The PS4 version already ran at 60FPS on PS4, so mentioning it as an "upgrade" doesn't really make sense.
2. The "enhanced graphics" are mostly draw-distance based, or Dimps removing the awful de-saturation filter on the game as a default.
3. The PS5 port has a physical edition (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dragon-Ball-Xenoverse-2-PS5/dp/B0CXTCTX3B+) and other stores are shipping it too.

Re: Soapbox: Once a PS4 Console Exclusive, PS5 Players Are Missing a Visual Stunner in Hellblade 2

DarkTron

Recent history suggests that this game will be on PS5 in the future, the fact the previous game was on PS4 further cements that idea.

Think we're starting to see the IGN seep through. Solely pointing out the graphics in the headline inherently draws attention away from some of the complaints (mainly, literal style over substance - even more so than the original). From my reading of the initial feedback, game seems to be more of a walking simulator that prioritises "push-forward" design over exploration, with combat that isnt that big an improvement over the original (if anything more basic). Focusing solely on the graphics as a selling g point isn't really logical anymore; I believe there's enough evidence from 2023 to prove that interactive and engaging gameplay trumps "hyper-realistic" graphics.

Re: Rumour: Kingdom Hearts 4 Slated for 2025 Release

DarkTron

@rjejr you're equating a 2-month delay of a triple-A title, which was delayed shortly before releasing (denoting either production issues or last-second implementations) where your only issue is a release date announcement was made 6 months early, to a game that's been in production since 2019, which has been rumoured for release each year, and has been delayed numerous times by Team Cherry publically. You're really grasping at straws trying to win (but ultimately lose) this argument.

Re: Indie Smash Hit Vampire Survivors Is Finally Coming to PS5, PS4 This Summer

DarkTron

@lechugajr game had a lot of Early Access hype well before it came out. It had gained the majority of its fanbase long before the 1.0 release (I bought it in April 2022). Attributing the success of a game that was generally praised for being high-quality at a low price, to being a part of a subscription service, genuinely misses the point.

Re: Persona 3 Reload: Episode Aigis Will Be Locked Behind Expansion Pass

DarkTron

@Zenos then you’re too far up Atlus’ ass to see sense.

This is a bare-bones remake, at best. The graphical overhaul and mechanics refinement is standard in remakes, most other remakes strive to conglomerate all their extra editions or versions into 1 (e.g. Mass Effect, Kingdom Hearts etc.). The remake was announced with the belief that it’ll at least try to bring in the extra content, and they haven’t even done that. Plus, according to leaks, this DLC has been in development for over a year already, there was no logic in locking it behind a DLC save for extra money. They’ve already found proof that the “hold off content” and “release it to reinvigorate” strategy works (Sonic Frontiers got a DLC that was basically the true ending, that was so poorly designed the reveal trailer a week before release had cut content), so they’re happy to try it out.

Even ignoring all those points, this is simply a rip-off. The DLC is being artificially inflated in price by means of music packs, when there’s little demand for that. Stupid ideologies like this is going to eventually lead to another mar,et crash, every little item is being monetized to the extreme.

Re: Persona 3 Reload's Episode Aigis DLC Was Dropped from the Base Game Due to Development Difficulties

DarkTron

@BrandoCalrissian game is charging $35 extra dollars for a "Season Pass" with 1 actual bit of content, and 2 Music DLCs that could've been part of the original release (which itself is part of a $30 bundle). $120 for the entire package doesn't look that good, especially when only a small portion of that isn't cosmetic.

The size of the team doesn't really matter, but regardless it's way bigger than what you're implying. Most of the P5R team went straight to P3R (about 40), and that's just the staff dedicated solely towards development of this title; there's also way more staff at Atlus who would have assisted in the development. 40+ isn't that small of a team to begin with, let alone the rest of the support.

There's still an expectation of the fact that a remake/rerelease of a years-old game should come with the extra content released. There's plenty of examples of games being remade from the ground up with extra content (Crash N-Sane), there's examples of games being both remade and containing all their extra content (Mass Effect: Legendary). P3R leveraged itself as the remake that completes the game, tying in all the content from the various version (or at least, that was the belief) to finally unify the one version of Persona games that is broken. What was given wasn't that; a complete remake of the original release (with the "added features" being the space for the new Personas from other games), the extra content from one of the releases being provided 6 months after release, and the other game being entirely shafted (so there's still a reason for people to by P3P on modern consoles). It's a very good remake (one I have not yet started, due to my pig-headed logic that I needed to Platnium Xenoverse 1 before), but this is a concerning trend for some; Persona releases have been designed specifically to never release like P3/P/FES did, generally being the original and the redesign that comes out later. Quite simply, this isn't what was wanted or expected.

Re: New Spider-Man 2 Suits for Huge 7th March Update Revealed, Will Cost $5 at First

DarkTron

Complete greed to lock specific suits behind an early-access paywall (even if the first 200k+ purchases directly go to charity, that's still a 2% uptake Sony need before it starts benefiting them directly). I'm sure they could simply have donated $1 million instead of trying to get their customers to foot their bill (and still give them those tax breaks for charity donations).

Re: PS5, PS4 Is Losing the SEO War Against Its Rivals

DarkTron

SEO isn't a valid representation for this method; you're literally admitting there's no clue how it's calculated, so you're also not aware of the potential for deliberate manipulation of the results (we already know that you can pay to have your search results appear higher, there's no reason to not assume people are paying for their positions).

Also, your research is region-specific. A Google search of the above games on a newly-generated account from Ireland has PlayStation appear higher on the listings than Microsoft and others (Steam, Epic, Amazon), with the publisher/developer usually taking the first spots.

Re: Sony Aggrieves Anime Fans by Erasing Digital Funimation Content in Crunchyroll Merger

DarkTron

@naruball Steam also has competitors to it (Epic and GOG being well-known examples), as well as third-party stores that also purchase and sell keys. Steam is the top site, and has remained so because it drives the vast majority of traffic. Your claim that Steam offering cheap games isn't founded; that's the publisher's choice to discount it to that degree. It's actually apparent more than ever that Steam's popularity (on top of everything else) is that it was simply the best and the first at doing exactly what it did (everyone else who tried to emulate it failed).

Crunchyroll, in comparison, has no real commercial competitor (HIDIVE doesn't have the reach that Crunchyroll has, and the next-biggest anime-only services are those websites that come up when you Google "watch anime online free"). They have a monopoly as of Funimation shutting, there's no reason to assume they won't capitalise on it.

@Shepherd_Tallon according to existing Funimation users, they've been informed their prices are going up (to the respective equivalent prices on Crunchyroll). I'm only speculating that Crunchyroll will then, once it unifies the brand, copy the price increases we've seen with other streaming services. As claimed, they have a clear monopoly, and modern "boycotts" have found that most people just tend to gripe and stick with it than actually cancel.

Re: Sony Aggrieves Anime Fans by Erasing Digital Funimation Content in Crunchyroll Merger

DarkTron

Removing access to content is one thing (especially if that content has already been paid for - even vouchers from Blu-Rays count in that regard), but Crunchyroll are also increasing their prices well beyond reasonable for legacy users (66% for the Premium plans), and with no other service, there's nothing going to stop Crunchyroll from raising their prices for regular customers next year. The only benefit for Crunchyroll is that it's profitable enough that the anime piracy community will remain active for years to come.

Re: The Last of Us HBO Showrunner Quashes Hopes for a Bill and Frank Spin-Off

DarkTron

Nick Offerman's comments didn't make sense to begin with. The series already covered a high-level overview of their timeline, as well as the beginning and end. The only things that could be added would be events prior to their meeting (which wouldn't make sense for a Bill and Frank spinoff, to never have them together, and in reality probably would have to be cast as younger versions) or during their stay (which also doesn't work, because we've seen the majority of the big events, and their lot being designed as a relative fortress to the zombie outbreak would lose all logic if they were under attack multiple times). Better to leave it as it was. You can tell Offerman loved filming it, but he clearly isn't aware there's nothing in that universe to expand the character

Re: The Last of Us 2 PS5 Remaster Announced, Has a Brand New Survival Mode, $10 Upgrade Path

DarkTron

@carlos82 differences between them is that TLoUP1 was advertised as a remake of the original in 2’s engine, which meant that it was considered a fully-made title. This is a straight up PS5 port, same as Ghost or Spider-Man Remastered, with platform-exclusive enhancements, but still using the same engine as its PS4 release. This would’ve made no sense to have no upgrade path, especially as the upgrade is minimal (1 remake used 2’s engine and made improvements, this is just 2 being rereleased with those improvements discovered when remaking 1).
