@Ralizah I'm sure there are loads of reasons, but I think it comes down to the astronomical cost of a photorealistic game. I think it's kind of insane how Sony wants people to buy a $850 console to play games they release maybe once every year, and 5-8 years per development studio. It's a financial model that is just aching to implode on itself.
@Rob_230 That is correct. You are the first person I have ever heard of that didn't like Nier: Automata. I'm assuming you got Ending E before you drew that conclusion?
@GamingFan4Lyf Which is hilarious to me. Sony is acting like they're at the top when they're not. Sony isn't the most profitable company in Japan, Nintendo is. Sony is acting like they aren't competing with Nintendo, but I hope the Switch 2 makes Sony feel the squeeze.
@Artois2 They both play almost all the same third-party games. Yes, I am comparing the PS5 Pro to the Switch Lite. One of these consoles is an affordable option to console gaming and the other is a shameless $850 cash grab. Nearly every option to get into console gaming will cost around half or less than half the cost of the PS5 Pro.
@kevinm360 Actually, no, it's not. The price of admission for what? "Pro" visuals for Sony's non-existant first-party library? The VAST majority of games barely even require the power of a PS4 to run perfectly fine. There is a tiny portion of games that need the power of a PS5, and basically nothing that actually NEEDS a PS5 Pro's power. Do you know what the actual price of admission is for console gaming? You can buy a used Nintendo Switch Lite right now for $100. $850 for a PS5 Pro is one of the most tone deaf marketing decisions I have ever seen, let alone how tone deaf some shiz-for-brains millionaire sounds saying it's "worth the cost" at a time when people can barely pay rent and put food on the table.
I feel like the future conversation is going to be less of "console vs PC," and more of "what console do I want in addition to my PC." I could see a lot of people having a PC and a Switch 2 so they can play basically everything on the market instead of PC and PS6, which will play basically the exact same games as each other and will be less cost effective.
Why? Who even cares at this point? Sony is more concerned about taking money from their fans than making games for their fans. Save for Astro Bot and Rift Apart, this has been the most disappointing console generation I have ever seen.
The diminishing returns on this console upgrade are just too much to ignore. Most games still run fine on the PS4, let alone the base PS5. At this rate, there really isn't a need for a PS5 Pro or even a PS6.
PS5 Pro = $700 PSVR2 = $500 PS5 Disc Drive = $80 PS5 Stand = $30 Horizon Call of the Mountain = $60
Final Total = $1,370 + tax
Oh boy! What a very affordable and accessible way to get into VR gaming! I can't wait to see slightly sharper grass in my full-price tech demo of a game. 🙄
@Octaslasher I saw a used Switch Lite on Facebook Marketplace with a game or two included for $150. I'm grateful that there are still ways for people to play games on a budget. I agree with you. I feel like the majority of Sony's fans just got priced out of their own fandom.
This is a joke. After taxes, this thing is going to be around $850. You could buy 4 Nintendo Switch Lites for the same price. This is the most tone-deaf price point I could have ever imagined.
I'm almost positive this box is going to be $700 after adding a disc drive and taxes. I can't wait to get a non-discernably, slightly smoother frame rate for the cost of 3 Nintendo Switch Lites. Especially when it's hard enough to afford rent in today's world.
I'm just in awe how Sony went from the PS4 generation, one of the best gens and first-party exclusive libraries I have ever seen, to this. The console wars don't matter, but they were in first, and it wasn't even close. Nintendo was face-down in the dirt with the WiiU and Microsoft fumbled the switch from Xbox 360 to the next gen. Look where we are now. Nintendo dusted themselves off, took the bar, and effing sprinted with it, creating possibly the greatest console with the most successful game libraries of all-time. Microsoft continues to fumble, but has a half-decent upcoming release schedule. And Sony? Just, how? They are directionless. Almost every single PS5 game has been either a re-release or sequel riding on the PS4 generation's coattails of originality and creativity. For myself, the PS5 generation has been the most uninspiring and disappointing generation I've experienced. What's the point of ever getting a PS5 Pro or a PS6 if this is what we can expect from Sony?
This would basically be the nail in the coffin for me when it comes to EVER buying a game again at full price. I already only pay full price for a game maybe once or twice a year.
I do not understand why "Not a long game" is a con. I would take a 2-4 hour platformer over some bloated, open-world 40-70 hours game like H:ZD or AC any day.
But where are the games? I'm having a hard time not feeling buyer's remorse for my PS5, let alone this dumb, overpriced headset. I have zero desire to get this thing.
@PegasusActual93 This is simply not true. In interviews, the director explained how they were able to keep the cost of the movie so low.
They did everything in house with their team of 35 VFX artist. Studios tend to spend through the nose to outsource their VFX so they get results faster or redone.
Their studio did VERY scrappy preproduction. Rather than using CGI for preproduction, they literally had a Godzilla action figure on a blue screen to stage all of their shots. They cut as many corners as they could to save on cost during production.
They kept the VFX to a minimum and only had Godzilla on screen when he needed to be. Everything else was character-driven storytelling or they used practical effects.
They didn't redo hardly any of the VFX shots. Studios waste tens of millions of dollars because they make whole VFX scenes that get cut or redone due to poor planning in the preproduction stages.
You know the outlook instead great when they have to cut the price of the console, and Nintendo never once cut the price of their console after 7 years.
I know many generations have had a price cut on consoles midway through the generation, but games (not a price cut) are what what sells consoles.
