HBO has posted the first official glimpse at its second season of The Last of Us, which looks to adapt a portion of PS5, PS4 exclusive The Last of Us: Part II. Across just 24 seconds of footage — which first appeared in a video documenting what HBO Max has to offer between now and 2025 — we see the memorable dancing scene in Jackson, the Seraphites, Dina, Joel, Ellie, and potentially a very, very short clip of Abby. Check it out below:
The second season of the TV series is set to release at some point in 2025. It concludes an HBO video looking at what the service has coming in the future, with other TV shows featured being Dune: Prophecy, It: Welcome to Derry, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and more.
It's unclear just how much of the second game's story will be adapted for the TV show's follow-up season, though it's confirmed to be seven episodes long and ends at a "natural breaking point". Given how much additional context and plot the first season added to the overall narrative, it's possible that endpoint may not even be an event from the PS5, PS4 title.

I think we can all assume where season two ends
@Americansamurai1 I know, right? Kinda sucks to know where it’s gonna go. But can’t wait for the shock and awe that those who don’t know are going to experience.
@AhmadSumadi yeah going to shock a lot of people who never played the second game. Curious to see if fan backlash will be anything like the game.
@Americansamurai1 Absolutely! Especially with such a beloved actor!
@Americansamurai1 according to the “fans” Neil Druckman was kidnapped by DEI operatives and brainwashed into declaring a holy war on gamers. He then slipped on a banana peel and made what’s loudly considered to be (by a very small number) the worst game ever made. I’m confident film and tv fans will be shocked and appreciate it. Those who don’t will likely have a measured response.
@UncleByron should be interesting either way
@Americansamurai1 Pedro Pascal has multiple role where his character has the same ending as Joel. Some even called Pedro as Sean Bean 2.0. But i rarely hear any backlash from his fans when his character got six feet under. So, i would be surprised if there's a lot of backlash from TloU tv fans.
Can’t take that Welcome to Derry seriously. Especially after somebody took the It poster and labelled it ‘Cloyne Chapter Toy’
@PuppetMaster true I saw his character from game of thrones pretty brutal stuff.
Can’t be worse than the mountain.
Starring Tiger Woods
Even though I hated how the story turned out in the game, I'm still looking forward to Season 2. Maybe it will turn out better in TV form. At least Abby's part may not go on, and on, and on, and on....
This teaser gave me goosebumps. Greatest story in a video game I’ve played. Hopefully season 2 captures some of that greatness. Although season 1 I thought was just fine
Protect Kaitlyn Dever at all costs.
I'm anticipating season 2 could end with the reveal of who Abby actually is. Seems like Catherine O'Hara's character may be some sort of therapist or psychologist residing in Jackson.
@UncleByron It's not a very small number. It's the minority based on the sales, I'll give you that, but there are Youtube reviews that complain about TLOU2 which have millions upon millions of views.
Joel is a beloved character. If he wasn't, the first game would not have been as successful as it was. Of course people got pissed off and it had nothing to do with "DEI" either.
@KilloWertz The problem as I see it is that TV Ellie is not the same character as Game Ellie. What worries me is her capability to handle going John Wick for a whole season.
This looks incredible and I’m so pumped for it. I can only imagine ‘that moment’ will be the most viral piece of TV ever. Those who haven’t played the game will be shocked and those that have will be super intrigued to see it play out in ‘reality’.
@LifeGirl I’ve watched many of those videos to see why people have such a tremendous problem with Part 2. It’s got plenty of problems, but they’re rarely discussed in said videos. Largely they’re complaining about a lack of logic or misidentifying plot holes because they have little to no experience with stories that expect you to infer things that happen off screen or entertain different perspectives. People who engage with film and literature of this type rarely have this problem so it’s not likely to send them into the apoplectic rage that the haters are still experiencing years later. It’s right up the HBO audience’s alley and I think they’ll respond much better to it.
Is that Kevin's mum in Home Alone?!
People going overboard about Joel. It's not going to be that shocking in a post game of thrones world
Doesn't even get close to red wedding level
@Swirly Yes it is, Catherine O’Hara, an actress from my favourite Christmas childhood movies Home Alone 1 & 2.
This is one of the negatives when we want movies/series to be faithful to video games, we know what to expect if the storylines are similar. I’m definitely still going to watch season 2 as I really enjoyed the first season.
Really interested to see how they handle S2 of the show.
I enjoyed TLoU: Part II a lot, but was a bit disappointed with some parts of the story, which I felt relied too heavily on plot contrivances and some characters acting out of character to get to where it needed to go. I get it, Game Dev is hard and for all we know there's a level left on the cutting room floor that would have explained some of those decisions by the characters involved. I'm hoping some of these inconsistencies in the writing are addressed in the show.
" I saved her" line was giving me serious Tommy Wiseau vibes 😂
This will bring back Abby edit memes, golfclub memes and Gigachad Abby doing bodybuilding poses memes after the "event" lol. Those memes were hilarious.
@UncleByron that’s a classic cherry picking disingenuous argument.
Angry Joe and Critical Drinker went into great depth explaining exactly what was wrong with it, and slammed down the receipts and citations to back it all up.
Those are the vids with the big views and like counts, and they are very well respected critics who know their stuff and presented a balanced case. I quite independently formed the same views as them, and for the record, I decide what I like, ND don’t tell me what I should like “if only you knew how writing worked”.
TLoU 2 inherited the excellent environments and average third person gameplay from its predecessor, but the writing and structure was absolutely terrible.
In particular the loss of a key relationship which was a significant part of what elevated the first game above average third person action games.
That bait and switch caused a lot of the anger. Clearly ND couldn’t warn people in advance, and many bought the game only too discover a couple of hours in that they’d been sold a dud in terms of what they expected/wanted.
Hopefully the TV show will save the moment until the END of the series. Then everyone can decide if they want to watch season 3 or not.
TV shows generally don’t require £60 up front unseen. But if someone subbed to a channel specifically for that show, and something happens at the end of episode 1, they’d be as annoyed as the gamers were.
@Victor_Meldrew I saved her, I saved her, it's true! Oh hi, Mark.
@LifeGirl Yeah, who knows. It's definitely a logical concern. We'll see if the actress could handle it or not.
In the end, I just hope I like the rest of the show better than I did the game. I know it might sound silly, but I'm still going to play the PS5 version of it at some point so I can refresh my memory on some things and give a much better comparison.
End episode one with the scene. Loved it in the game would love it in the show.
@CrashBandicoat I’m not being disingenuous. Angry Joe’s review was the absolute worst one I watched. He has no idea what he’s talking about. To keep it brief, one of his many absurd nitpicks was that Part 2 was “Manipulative” because Ellie had to kill a vicious dog that was later shown to be friendly and loyal toward Abby. He was perfectly fine with the first one when they dropped Joel on some rebar so they could have cannibal child predators menace Ellie for a fifth of the game. That was not manipulating the players emotions according to the undisputed galaxy brain of Angry Joe.
Speaking of disingenuous, Angry Joe had a habit of looking for poor writing where it didn’t exist. At the beginning of the same review he turned a moment where Tommy told Abby’s group they had a settlement a few miles down the way (during a blizzard mind you) into Tommy creating a situation where he stupidly gave away their precise location and this could somehow destroy the well armed and highly populated settlement of Jackson. And before you say “it was a joke” it was one meant to make Tommy and/or the writers look foolish. All Tommy did was make it known that Abby’s group was outnumbered in a friendly way. Angry Joe then went on to say that Tommy and Joel giving their first names away was unforgivably dumb. They were on the other side of the continent where all forms of travel are incredibly dangerous so it was reasonable to assume that Abby’s group was not there for them.
This is the big problem with the haters. People have to explain all this stuff to them where the people who enjoy it just intuit what’s not said explicitly. Angry Joe even admitted as much in his closing when he said “Explained doesn’t mean good.” Even then, nearly every point he makes in that truly awful video demonstrates that he didn’t understand something or was unwilling to.
It’s ok not to like this game, it’s not for everyone. It’s just ridiculous to assume Part 2 was some kind gag reel of poor writing.
@UncleByron dude seriously…..
The dog guilt trip is not remotely comparable to Joel getting injured!!! What the heck lol!
Two entirely different concepts!
The bits where Joel was injured were rubbish though…..as that basically turned that part of the game into TLoU 2….
The star of the show, the wonderful surrogate father daughter relationship is removed, and it turns into mediocre average third person adventure number 2376.
Then ND said “hey, let’s create an entire game like that”.
Facepalm.
Glad to know that Angry Joe apparently hasn’t got a clue.
How many subs have you got?
Honestly some people did hate the game irrationally I’d agree, but I think the extremest supporters of the title are equally as toxic and blinded by their fanaticism.
@CrashBandicoat you aren’t making any arguments here. Explain how they’re different. I said they were similar because they are events that are written to get an emotional response out of the player. And here I am having to explain what should be obvious, again.
Also pointing to subs as being a metric for truth and relying on the arguments of others to make a point means, I’m not really engaging with you, I’m engaging with talking points from the people you’re following. We’ll just have to agree to disagree.
7 episodes apparently, so I'm guessing part 2 will be in two parts? Hopefully. Teaser looks alright
@Beerheadgamer82
They have said from the beginning that the second game would take at least two seasons to cover if not more.
@PegasusActual93 I must have missed that when they mentioned it, nice to now know
@UncleByron how are they different?
One is a cheap emotional trick, the other is a story justification to enable the player to play as the secondary character, who until that point has been an npc.
To suggest they are somehow the same, is like drawing similarities between a pork sausage and a car.
C’mon man.
