Re: Talking Point: What Did You Think of Sony's PlayStation Experience Keynote?

professorhat

I want loads of fresh IPs and not remakes, but I really want a remake of Ratchet and Clank and Crash. Also, I hate all Indie games, but doesn't that No Man's Sky look amazing? Finally, I wish they wouldn't hype games up and tell you about them years before they release, but why aren't they announcing everything they're working on?

<disengages impossible to please, and mostly hypocritical average PlayStation fan mode>

I thought it was a really good keynote - games, games and more games. Still really looking forward to No Man's Sky, and also Until Dawn looks cracking! Plus loving all the Vita attention - about blimmin time!

Re: Feature: What Are December 2014's Free PlayStation Plus Games?

professorhat

@EvisceratorX The fact a non-indie game has been put up for the PS4 I think has stopped everyone's usual complaining (though I suspect Secret Ponchos will actually be the better game).

Most people don't post to say how happy they are, hence the skewed nature of comments sections and why it seems everyone generally hates everything

Re: Grand Theft Auto V PS4 Patch Problems Preventing Online Access

professorhat

Okay, am I missing something? I pre-ordered the digital edition and downloaded both the game and the patch last night before going to bed (unfortunately before midnight). So, now, I turn the PS4 on, and am told I have to download the patch again. I get the error mentioned above, but I persist and it eventually starts. 20 mins later, patch is downloaded - great! I can start to play the game.

Only no. Now it's "Installing" and has been for nearly half an hour and is at 13%. From what I can see, this is because it has to download the other 40 or 50 GB of the game? So what's the bloody point of having a pre-order pre-loading feature, if it only downloads the first 2% and you then have to wait 3 hours for the rest to download?

It's not a massive issue, I can wait. But had I known this was how it worked, I would have started this off before I went to work this morning. It seems I stupidly thought pre-downloading the title would mean I could play immediately, rather than just save myself 2% of the initial download. More fool me...

Re: Here's a Quick Look At Destiny on Vita via PS4 Remote Play

professorhat

@ollietaro A Vita TV is basically a Vita without a screen or controls, that plugs into your TV. So yes, you can use it to play Vita games on your TV, and you can use it to Remote Play your PS4 to the Vita TV. The advantage in terms of Remote Play is, you can use your real PS4 controller with it, so all the controls map perfectly i.e. you don't get the problem I outlined above with the Vita controls.

You don't need a Vita to use a Vita TV or vice versa - they're two different things.

Re: Here's a Quick Look At Destiny on Vita via PS4 Remote Play

professorhat

@ollietaro Yes, Remote Play is simply streaming the game from your PS4 through a wi-fi connection i.e. what normally appears on your TV appears on the Vita screen and you can control it through the Vita controls. You don't have to be within your own wi-fi network to do it, I've played PS4 games from my parents house i.e. the game was running on my PS4 at home, and streaming the screen to my Vita screen across the internet. You do need to have a pretty decent connection into the internet on both sides for this to work though (I have 20 Mbps upload to the internet, and my parents had a similar download speed). Clearly though, you'll get the best results when connected to the same wifi network as your PS4 is hooked into so it's not going over the internet.

The issue with it is, many games haven't done what Bungie have done, and specifically tailored the controls to suit the Vita. There are four missing buttons on the Vita compared to the DS4 controller - L1/2 and R1/2 (i.e. the extra shoulder buttons); and L3 and R3 (i.e. clicking the DS4's analogue sticks). These are generally mapped on to the Vita's touch screens (front and back), so it works, but it often doesn't really work well for the game you're playing. As a result, I tend to only use it for games with simple controls that don't really need those buttons.

When the Vita TV comes out, you can use that to remote play to your PS4 on a different TV and use your DS4 controller with it - this will make it a proper remote play facility and is the main reason I'm looking forward to it.

Re: Gamescom 2014: Sony Refuses to Rehash Previous Generation on PS4

professorhat

@odd69 - It did for me - my PS3 died last summer and I never got to play it - I considered buying a new PS3 just to do so, but it seemed crazy when the PS4 was arriving in a few months. When they announced it, I was very happy (along with GTA V).

There'll be a lot of people around the world who came across from Xbox 360 who felt the same way (especially in the US which was an Xbox 360 stronghold).

Re: Gamescom 2014: PlayStation TV Changes the Channel from 14th October

professorhat

@Enobmah_Shards - No one can be sure of anything, but if the Vita TV sells really well, then people will start making games for this market, which will of course indirectly benefit standard Vita owners (since it runs the same games).

I seriously doubt this will happen personally, and I wouldn't recommend buying one to anyone if that's what they're hoping for. But given the sheer number of great, cheap games available for Vita, the ability to Remote Play in a different room, plus making use of some extra free games for those with a PS4 and PS Plus subscription that don't have a Vita, the Vita TV certainly has potential to shift a few million units round Europe.

Re: Reaction: PS4's Variety Shines at Gamescom 2014, but Sony's Presser Lacked a Show Stopper

professorhat

What let the air out of my balloon was the Media Molecule logo coming up, and then it just being an adaptation of Tearaway. I like Tearaway, it's a good game, but I had been hoping to see what their new game is all about and when it didn't happen, I did feel disappointed.

Otherwise, I think it was a solid presentation, just not the incredible one we were all hoping it to be

Re: Reaction: Why Lara Croft Will Still Raid PS4 in Rise of the Tomb Raider

professorhat

Actually, your comment on Uncharted 4 going against it makes even more sense. The developer / publisher gets paid to have it as a timed exclusive on Xbox One whilst Uncharted 4 is cleaning up on PS4. Xbox Ones probably sell a few more units as a result. Then, after a few months and everyone has played Uncharted 4 to death, Tomb Raider is released on PS4 and sells loads of copies. Win for everyone.

Re: Gamescom 2014: Wait, Rise of the Tomb Raider Isn't Coming to PS4?

professorhat

Very much hoping this is a timed exclusive as I enjoyed the Definitive Edition reboot on PS4. MS certainly have the cash to buy out exclusives like this if they want to, but I feel like this probably isn't the case here. Maybe that's just me hoping... Fingers crossed!

Quantum Break looked pretty good too - finally Xbox One owners have something to actually crow about

Re: Grand Theft Auto V Is Still Going to Jump Start Your PS4 This Year

professorhat

My PS3 died last spring (Day One edition, so pretty good innings), so I missed out on The Last of Us and GTA V - I was tempted to pickup another one to play them last year, but decided I couldn't spare the money, so very glad to see these being released on PS4 now as gives me a chance to finally play them.

I appreciate I'll be in a minority in this!

Re: Sony: We Want to Make PS4 Players Feel Special

professorhat

I feel good every time I switch it on. I'm in my mid 30s but feel like a young teenager again when I hear the music - maybe that's why. I don't get much time to play games as I used to - still got Watch Dogs to complete and The Last of Us has arrived. Plus with two new PS Plus games every month - I'm more than happy with it.
