Re: Psychonauts Is Free When You Pre-Order Rhombus of Ruin

TheGZeus

I don't care about VR, and require games to have good controls.
"Oh, but the story-" is trapped in a crap game.
I hate the reverse almost as much, but in my opinion the main quest of Borderlands: the Pre-Sequel is better than the main games, but the gameplay is so unbalanced I couldn't get myself to play through it twice. I play BL2 with voices off while listening to podcasts.
I can't remember who said it, but it was put best this way: "Double Fine games are great except for the gameplay".

Re: Feature: 2017 Is an Insane Year for Japanese Games on PS4

TheGZeus

@KratosMD I really wish I could get into these games.
Every time a choice pops up in a visual novel type game it does the opposite of what I want.
I'm good at the combat, because it's the same as SMT.
Thus I would be using walkthroughs or savescumming like crazy dungeons. Not my idea of fun.
I suck at them and that sucks for me.

Re: This Is Why Devs Don't Bother Finishing Games

TheGZeus

This won't last forever.
Most games I see that are popular on Twitch are multiplayer only, janky messes with minimal effort on balance.
Most are Minecraft/Rust clones with no story concent or offline play.
Eventually people move on from one to the next to the next. Once they're finished people realise they're fav imaginary feature won't be added and they turn on it. Then, Steam reviews quickly turn negative and they find "X but better" and the cycle repeats. Die hards stick around and become so good new players can't start because of PvP, Minecraft is inexplicably popular despite nothing actually working because everyone makes some modded server, turns on creative mode, hangs out and plays Legos.

Re: Sony Confirms PS4 Pro Boost Mode, Already Improving a Number of Games

TheGZeus

@glassmusic as someone who thinks Dark Souls 1 & 3 are "decent but a bunch of gibberish" and "Demon's Souls" is "great, but ludicrously hard" I can say that Bloodborne is one of my top 10 games of all time. I started gaming in the 80s.
Morose. Deep. Uncomplicated. Rather challenging, especially solo.
The DLC bosses are rather ludicrous to consider soloing, but the more stable framerate should help with everything (every frame counts!!!).

Re: This The Last Guardian Ending Easter Egg Will Settle Some Arguments

TheGZeus

@kyleforrester87 Because it's such a tired old trope.

It's in hundreds if not thousands of books and has been around longer than books.

"OMG WHAT A TWIST!" Not really.

These games hold no appeal for me. They control terribly, the mechanics are janky at best, and the stories are tired and pretentious.

"OMG WONDA WAS THE BAD GUY!" No crap. He was obviously a selfish twit from the opening cutscene. Skyrim has a better story, and I never bothered with main quest in skyrim, because it's stupid.

Again, they make great environments and designs. They just don't make good games.

@theGZeus this is your second warning now, please watch the language. -Tasuki-

Re: This The Last Guardian Ending Easter Egg Will Settle Some Arguments

TheGZeus

...How is this mind blowing?

This is some pretty basic storytelling trope stuff.
Do people just not read any more? Actually, this probably more common in films.

It'd be nice if this game... Worked...

I really wish Team Ico were put in charge of the aesthetics of a game with good mechanics and a less pretentious story.

Re: Poll: Does The Last Guardian Dazzle After a Decade?

TheGZeus

9 times out of ten I care at least as much about gameplay as atmosphere or narrative. I think Dark Souls 3 is an inconsistent mess with a paper thin narrative that makes no sense. It had great gameplay so I sank a fair bit of time into it.
I hear Psychonauts has a great story. Janky platforming? NOPE. I'm out.
SotC was an exercise in frustration and boredom for me. Big empty world getting in the way of getting to the janky gameplay. That and it's basically a Zelda game in overall structure, and I can't stand that formula. Oh, and I think the story is pretentious crap, and the protagonist is a selfish jerk.

That said, I love Daggerfall and Morrowind. Morrowind does have a good story and interesting atmosphere and design, so that makes up for a fair bit of the janky control and combat.
Daggerfall? Can't explain why I love it. It's ugly, repetitive, unbalanced, unfinished...

What I'm saying is if this is like SotC mechanically, I'll despise it, and the story probably won't appeal to me either. However, I can accept that others will feel differently.

Re: Rumour: December PS Plus PS4 Games Leaked on PlayStation Store

TheGZeus

@kyleforrester87 That's my point, really.
If you think it's decent, but not for you, you should be aware that someone else might share your opinion.
"You should get X game if/unless Y".
There's no such thing as an objective game review, because games are arts and entertainment, and even if something is broken, hideous, and has terrible performance at best, someone can still love it. Case in point: I adore Daggerfall, but can't even figure out how to play Fallout New Vegas (so, what quests do I take next? Do I just explore until I find the fleshwalls of death and then metagame away that direction for now? Why am I shooting bugs in the face so I can get better at talking?), Even though I consider it a better game. (Better combat, graphics, story, mechanics overall...).
I'd still only recommend NV to someone who likes rather silly post apocalyptic fiction, wanted a rather linear experience, and didn't mind a lot of trial and error.
Caveats. They're important when recommending anything.

Re: Rumour: December PS Plus PS4 Games Leaked on PlayStation Store

TheGZeus

@kyleforrester87 I... can't parse that logic.
"I didn't like this, but other people did, therefore people should spend money on it".
If Morrowind is on sale, I mention it on twitter, because I think it's a great game. I also give many caveats regarding its age and mechanics.
I wouldn't recommend FFX, despite its popularity, at ANY price... Because I think it's rubbish. (Hours of my life gone to that bad LSD trip with no interactive elements...)
Same with any BioWare game. Not sure how much I'd need to be paid to play any of their games, but I feel like I was robbed at the steep discounts at which I bought them. (Tried one from every franchise. Raged at the awful mechanics, fake choices and ham-handed story every time)
Recommending a game you don't like based on nothing but the price... idgi
I recommended P4G to a friend who likes visual novels and turn-based combat, because i know their tastes.
I know Persona is a decent franchise, I just can't get with it. I only recommend games i don't get with to people who definitely would.

God, I'm long winded...

Re: Rumour: December PS Plus PS4 Games Leaked on PlayStation Store

TheGZeus

@themcnoisy Just feel the need to interject:
Just because a franchise is popular doesn't mean it's for everyone.
I got P4G because I love the main SMT games.
Turns out I don't like Persona, though.
(I just can't grok the whole dating sim type gameplay during the day. Also, I don't feel like save scumming because I fail a conversation, especially with a dedicated save point...)

Re: Soapbox: How The Last of Us Proves That Resolution Isn't Everything

TheGZeus

@get2sammyb It also costs an absolute fortune to get the pixels and colours that come with a bloody 30ms response time!

The pro isn't powerful enough to deliver more than "slightly better".

I'm concerned that how hard you're pushing it will reflect poorly on you as it becomes increasingly apparent that it offers little to gamers.

Re: Watch Dogs 2 Looks Tidy on PS4 Pro But Has a Few Performance Dips

TheGZeus

What's the minimum response time on any 4k TV? How about with HDR on?
Why would anyone want to deal with that?
I'm annoyed that mine has 5ms (or was it 10? It was on sale and my last one had died...). How on earth could anyone deal with 30ms?
I think this may be why we don't have any news of patches for FromSoftware games, which have frame-perfect hit detection.

This is madness.

Have fun with your Sega 32X. At least you don't need to risk breaking your system. My 32X released smoke.
Oh, but it only cost my 20usd on clearance. I didn't have to buy a whole new system to find out that the games were worse.

Re: Hands On: Quit Bitchin'! PS4 Pro Is a Big, Beautiful Step Forward

TheGZeus

@BAMozzy You're pulling so much if this out of thin air.
Games are written for specific platforms, on different engines, by different companies with different policies... You can't make sweeping statements. Some games are written for PCs then posted, some for consoles, then ported, some written to be cross-plaform...
They write for where the money is. That's just good business. There's overwhelming evidence for that.
There's a massive laundry list if bad PC ports for games written for consoles. Low-res textures(!!!), locked framerate(O.O), no mouse/keyboard support etc.
Make up my mind? Those aren't mutually exclusive. They're not even related. False dichotomy. "You don't mind taking the train but say that people should carpool? MAKE UP YOUR MIND!"
"Game development takes effort, and compromises will be made".
"You're delusional!"

"It's easy to port games because the GPU has totally new features" (paraphrased). The opposite is true. Using new features takes new coding. That takes time. Time that could be spent improving on performance on the standard unit.

I've given carefully reasoned arguments based on actual experience on working with developers and given evidence for everything I've said.
You've given contradictory statements, pulled easily refuted nonsense out of thin air, made blanket statements that have no basis in fact...

You like the pro. That's fine. Buy one. I'm not trying to stop you. I just think it's a pointless attempt at a stop gap that will hurt the platform.

I guess I can look forward to a high percentage of Japanese games, as those dev's tend to ignore MS consoles, just like me.

Re: Hands On: Quit Bitchin'! PS4 Pro Is a Big, Beautiful Step Forward

TheGZeus

@BAMozzy That GPU feature has nothing to do with ease of writing "enhanced" games. It's just a new GPU feature.

Yes.code is written on a PC, then cross-compiled (look it up) and run a on a devkit.

I didn't mention multiplayer at all. It splits the useer base into people with games that run well, and games that don't.

I think you need to do your research... Into reading comprehension and basic logic, in addition to software development and graphics hardware.

Re: Hands On: Quit Bitchin'! PS4 Pro Is a Big, Beautiful Step Forward

TheGZeus

@BAMozzy oh, and no, most AAA games are not ported from PC to consoles. You don't PC game, I see. There are entire blogs, YouTube channels, and Steam groups dedicated to reporting on the quality of PC ports. Look at COD, for one.
Hell, look at how long it took for GTAV to get released on PC.
They put the effort where the money is first, then port elsewhere.

Re: Hands On: Quit Bitchin'! PS4 Pro Is a Big, Beautiful Step Forward

TheGZeus

@BAMozzy That reads like a press release.
"The PS4 Pro has built in features to make it easier for developers to enhance games. "
You mean it runs the same basic OS but has more powerful hardware? I know. It's still work.
"...not Sony or the Pro's fault." Who said anything assigning blame?

I buy systems for new games. The only graphical factor for me was a native 1080p resolution, unlike most PS3 games.
You're mis-using "we". Own your decisions.

I haven't bought any remasters save Borderlands (that was in hopes of playing with a friend) and the Metro games. I probably would have skipped the Metro games if the original 2033 didn't crash on my computer, or the PS4 version weren't 20USD at a local shop, new. A big reason for all the remasters is the lack of backwards compatibility. The only way for people without a PS3 to play them is to port them.

Basically, your argument is "some games will look better, some run better, that's nice". I know.
That doesn't invalidate my argument, which is that it makes development more complicated, splitting both development and the user base.

Re: Hands On: Quit Bitchin'! PS4 Pro Is a Big, Beautiful Step Forward

TheGZeus

@adf86 "pro updates can be done by just one developer"
...what?
I.. don't think you know how software development works.
There's no universal "better" setting for every engine. Every patch will need optimisation. Patched and new games are already confirmed to -still- run at 30fps. If that's the priority version, how well can we expect the standard version to run?

Look at the "new 3DS". Yes, hyrule warriors runs on a standard 3ds... At 15fps or less...

Re: Hands On: Quit Bitchin'! PS4 Pro Is a Big, Beautiful Step Forward

TheGZeus

@electrolite77 No "exclusives", but how many games will actually be optimised properly for the standard PS4 is the pro gets a good adoption rate? How many games will be enhanced for the pro if it doesn't?
They can't just flip a switch and get the best out of both. There will be compromises.
If we don't see a tonne of patches for older games the pro is pointless.
If all we get is fancier graphics for some games, the pro is pointless.

As as relatively beautiful ESO will be in "4k", I prefer vanilla Morrowind on PC (via openmw. Easy modding, no crashes, 60fps on a potato). Fancy graphics doesn't make a good game. Not that ESO is mind blowing in the graphics department, but... Morrowind.
If game's start getting 60fps patches instead of just higher resolution textures and more lighting effects, I'll give a crap.

I'll buy one and hate it if only Bloodborne gets a 60fps patch, because I think that game is amazing, and would pay to do without 30fps at best in my way.

Re: Hands On: Quit Bitchin'! PS4 Pro Is a Big, Beautiful Step Forward

TheGZeus

@kyleforrester87 Are you too young to remember the Sega CD? 32X? Multiple iterations of everything?
They confused the market, raised the price of the top end of their hardware, confused the developers (what to code for, what to prioritise etc), alienated retailers...

Bloody "new Nintendo 3DS" nonsense...
