Sony PlayStation have already officially announced they are not going to do Physical discs anymore, it doesn't matter what anyone else says.

@TDHorizon That's not digital codes as you get on Xbox and PC, those are just for buying PlayStation store credit a bit cheaper, no where near a good as the prices you can get on Xbox/PC for buying Digital games and subscriptions from 3rd party's.
Sony also have any money you have left from those vouchers locked nicely into their store.

Let's not forget that was Sony fault, it was Sony who decided to treat those companys like they were their own first party studios and were locking in every new release for a year
As soon as Microsoft found out that Sony were going for Starfield next Microsoft ended Sony's 3rd party exclusivity game they were playing.

Digital Foundry says this is how it works:

"The critical thing here is that the programme still allows for used game sales, game borrowing and so on. If you buy a disc, convert it to digital, then sell it on, whoever inserts it next into their Xbox console will get the entitlement for their account and remove it from yours - which seems fair enough."

@DennisReynolds Well people obviously think Sony's ceo will listen through social media including Twitter about physical discs.

Sony announced on May 18, 2026, that it would stop porting its major single-player, narrative-driven first-party games to PC.

Sony announced on July 1, 2026 that it will stop producing physical game.

Much less than 2 months apart, not sure if they released the PC news first in the hope of limiting the damage of the physical disc removal news, if they did it didn't work.

@Vertere he is right though, the last time Sony made that comment a couple of months later the price of PS Plus went up.

@Danbottomburp Well, it can also be a case of most of those titles are old and most people will have already played them.
Sony are raking in the money from the PS Plus tiers, I'm sure they could get some recent titles for Premium and still have huge amounts of $ left over.

@DoppiaD I think Sony must be the only one(and of course Nintendo) that still charge for cloud saves which you lose if you stop subscribing.
Sony and Nintendo are also in a battle to see who can offer the world's worst Digital Returns Policy .
Not a good look for when they go completely digital.

@UltimateOtaku91 It was down for some not all and for different amounts of time (you of course chose 20 hours) , it's a shame Sony don't simply come out and tell people what the problem was, you have to look to Microsoft to get the answer the CTO openly said what had happened.

"Late last night, a licensing service that sits outside of XBOX, but which XBOX depends upon, began failing. This caused some sign-in scenarios to fail, and it caused many scenarios that require an entitlement check to also fail, such as listing out your Full Library and launching games that you own. It also affected several of our publishing and store partners who depend on those same systems which is why some of you saw issues in specific games and not others."
The Xbox exec goes on to explain that once they "isolated the failing infrastructure" the Xbox Support team got to work fixing the issues, which led to the service coming back "unevenly across regions which is why some of you recovered hours before others."

They have now added Xbox backward compatibility to PC for earlier Xbox games that is also included with any tier of Gamepass.

@Oram77 That's basically true, as it's around 95 out of 100 cases that it is Sony money hatting the games, haven't they even done it on Gta 6 where they can't even mention it's on Xbox in ads, what's the other thing "Plays best on PlayStation" we'll if your preference is Sony's controller then they get away with that But we all know that usually means higher Res and FPS which is Not the case.

@ecurb7 I'm sure with the amount of money Sony are making from subscriptions they can easily afford to get games newer than 2 or 3 years old.

@0niguy why would Sony do that, they charge for any form of backwards compatibility beyond the PS4 now and people pay for it without complaint.
They lock you into their Digital Store and have the worst Digital returns policy around, still no one complains.

Microsofts policy on each of these is completely the opposite of Sony's, that's why the digital converter is likely to be true for Xbox.

What to expect when you are forced to go digital.

Absolutely terrible digital return policy, I can't belive how many people don't realise just how bad it is.

Answer = No Benefit.

Why people go Digital on Xbox.

Buy your games and subscriptions from any 3rd party at far far cheaper prices (Just like PC) , unlike Sony who lock you into their Digital Store for Everything.

'Play Anywhere' buy the Xbox version of a game get the PC version Free and vice versa.
Nothing like that on PlayStation, you want it on PS5 and handheld then you pay twice.

Excellent Microsoft Digital Returns Policy.

Sony has the worst Digital returns policy I have ever seen, in fact there really is no real return policy, download it and you are stuck with it.

@LogicStrikesAgain Sony are hiding that's worse, if you think Sony has finished layoffs I think you are wrong.

Sony, do You mean it has better Framerates on the standard PS5 vs Series X? "Er No we actually just mean if you prefer our controller then you will think it plays best on our console".

@Northern_munkey It was reported on most sites that they were going to make money back from existing users, so PS Plus Price rise was obviously one.

Why do people believe rumours?

I think Xbox owners will be fine, they have The Halo Master Chief Collection, it not only has the set of Master Chief games but also includes Multiplayer, price under £20.

Halo will sell more on PS5 (this version) because the Xbox Halo Master Chief Collection already has Halo 1,2, 3, and Reach with 'Multiplayer', so this release is a big step backwards if you have an Xbox especially as you can get the Master Chief collection for around £11.

There was no way they would go full multiformat with a new console on the way.

I can not see any scenario where they would not release First Party exclusives for Helix on release day

I think that covers everything.

@Fiendish-Beaver Just imagine if Sony made a game called let's say "Concord" and industry reports estimated the development cost of Concord to be between $200 million and $400 million, then the game flops so bad it is recalled and scapped, now imagine this causes Sony to also scrap several more of this type of game despite being well into development.
Going by your doomsday scenario for Gears I would say you would think my imaginary Concord game would end Sony.
