PlayStation's First Post Since Physical Games Debacle Draws 57k Replies 1

Update []: The backlash to Sony’s first social media post since killing physical games is showing no signs of slowing, with its FlexStrike post now netting over 65k replies and 25m views.

These are frankly extraordinary numbers, even for a social media account on the scale of PlayStation’s. If this continues, then the company will simply have no option but to respond to the fervour of its fans.

In its defence, if it is planning some kind of rebuttal or even reversal, it will take a little time to surface. The company took three weeks to backtrack on the PS3 and PS Vita store closures earlier this gen, so don’t expect to hear from the org until later in the month.

Original Story: Well, if you were an optimistic social media manager, you might say Sony’s new FlexStrike arcade stick is the most talked about accessory in gaming history.

The manufacturer went almost a week without posting on social media after announcing its decision to stop manufacturing physical games from January 2028, and so many were waiting for its first X (or Twitter) message to picket the platform holder with their dissatisfaction.

I don’t think I’ve seen anything quite like this, though: at the time of writing, in less than 10 hours, the post has over 57k replies and 17m views. That’s rising, by the way.

For comparison, the last time Sony posted about the FlexStrike on X was on 27th June: it got 352 replies and 750k views.

The manufacturer has a huge social media reach so it often registers tweets viewed in the millions, but 17m is quite extraordinary.

Of course, as you’d expect, the responses are wince-inducing.

The manufacturer’s feud with Domino’s Pizza rumbles on, as the fast food chain ratioed the manufacturer with 118k likes by simply saying: “Did someone order a digital pizza?”

I’ve gotta say, for my taste, these Domino’s Pizza gags don’t really land – but it’s certainly getting a lot of attention. It racked up 2.2m views on that message alone.

Some of the replies are aggressive and hostile, others are more politely requesting Sony to change its stance.

It’s posted several more times in the hours since, and the tone remains pretty much the same throughout – although engagement is dipping with each subsequent post. (We’re still talking 11k replies on The Blood of Dawnwalker post, though, very few about the actual game.)

As you’d expect, it’s much the same story on Facebook, Instagram, and Bluesky, although the engagement there is a lot less.

And as we reported earlier in the week, YouTube comments remain a horror show.

I don’t know whether Sony thinks it can ride this one out, but I’m of the opinion it has to issue some kind of response ASAP. This isn’t going away.
