Update #7 []: After a messy day of outages and inconsistent experiences, Sony now says PSN is “up and running” again.
As far as I can see, everything is working as I’d expect it to. There may still be some isolated incidents here and there, but generally you should find things are functional once more.
Well done, everyone – we got there in the end.
Update #6 []: Sony’s service page has now updated to reflect the ongoing improvements to PSN.
Subscribe to Push Square on YouTube171k
It seems most aspects are now working as intended, although “you might have difficulty getting products from the PS Store”.
The company says it’s still working towards a solution and thanks you for your patience.
Fortunately, your games and everything else should now be functioning fairly healthily, although I’ll continue to monitor and update if anything else occurs.
Update #5 []: PSN is finally starting to improve after over six hours of spotty performance.
While the Sony service page still says its network is “experiencing issues”, I’m finally able to login, view my friends list, browse my recently played games, and even download software from my catalogue.
It looks like, browsing reactions around the web, others are beginning to have similar luck.
So it seems this issue is finally fixed, but I’ll continue to monitor and update once PlayStation makes a statement.
Update #4 []: As far as Amazon Web Services are concerned, its system is working correctly – but there’s been very little improvement to PSN, which has been down for over four hours now.
While there have been signs of recovery to essential features like the PS Store, I’m still unable to download my games, access my friends list, or view my recently played games.
Some people are seeing bigger improvements; others are still struggling to connect.
Sony’s service page now says “all services are experiencing issues” and that it’s “working to resolve things as soon as possible”.
Update #3 []: Amazon Web Services say it’s resolved all issues with its services, which means the PSN should come back online imminently.
At the time of this update, I’m still experiencing a variety of issues across the whole network. While my recently played games had returned, they’re now gone again. I was also able to temporarily see my friends list, but can’t again now.
There are signs things are improving as the PS Store is now accessible, although clicking on any content brings up the error message ‘Content Can’t Be Found’.
Across the Push Square team, we’re all seeing various different stages of improvement and recovery.
I’d expect things to slowly resolve over the next hour or so, but will continue monitoring the situation and will update when appropriate.
Sony’s service page still says everything is “up and running”, which is simply not true – even if there are now signs of life.
Update #2 []: Amazon Web Services, the likely culprit behind the ongoing PSN downtime, has issued a statement on its ongoing recovery efforts.
It seems it expects functionality to be fully restored shortly, although it’ll take a little more time.
Here’s what it said:
As routes continue to be restored, customers should see a continued reduction in error rates and timeouts when connecting to affected services. We are monitoring recovery progress closely and will continue working until all routes have been fully restored and service metrics return to pre-event levels. We will provide another update in the next 30-45 minutes.
Functionality is definitely improving, so we should see service return to normal within the next hour or two.
Update #1 []: After an outage which knocked almost all PSN features offline, the service is seemingly beginning to recover.
It looks like Amazon Web Services – which powers a lot of the PSN – had a hiccup earlier today, resulting in widespread issues around the world.
I’ll continue to monitor the situation, but AWS has acknowledged the issues, and has said services are slowly returning to normal.
While your mileage may vary, I’m able to see my friends list again, but features like the PS Store still seem broken on my end.
Sony has yet to acknowledge any issues on its service page.
Original Story: PSN appears to be struggling globally, with Sony’s official status page saying “all services are up and running”.
Down Detector shows a huge spike in reports over the past few hours in the US, which is gradually easing. In the UK, more reports are coming in as time passes.
From my end, the entire network is down, including even game downloads and the PS App.
I can’t see my most recently played games, Trophies, or browse my friends list or connect to game servers.
Chatting with the rest of the Push Square team, we’re all experiencing issues – although our mileage varies.
Some of us can’t even verify our game licenses to play digital games – not exactly ideal in this non-physical era Sony’s trying to force us into.
Others are able to at least see their recently played games, but the PS Store is mostly broken. It seems like even the web-based PS Store is offline.
Meanwhile, the Marvel Tokon beta – out today – is showing a ‘Network Error’ on PS5.
I’ll continue to monitor the situation and contact Sony for an update. In the meantime, do let me know how you’re getting on in your country via the comments section.

Nothing working my end, what about you guys?
PS App on my iPhone in the Midlands UK working fine. Haven’t booted up PS5 yet in the household though, will try in a jiffy!
Nothing for me either. No store, no PS Plus, nothing
Edit: app not working either. Can see the store but when i want to go to an actual product page then it doesnt show.
@ButteredCrumpet Weird. Definitely a ton of reports flowing in from UK.
Wonder if they got hacked. A lot of people are mad with sony and this is another reason why a digital only future sucks
So, nothing is working for the online.
I’m assuming people can play offline games fine? Both downloads and physical?
@Kienda Yea offline works for both
App down in Dubai / UAE but haven’t tried PS5 until tonight
I had no problem logging in and playing this morning before work. App is working fine too for me.
Either way, still sucks for those effected.
@Kienda Yeah. I'm playing Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced as we speak.
Well well well…
Yea mine is down too and app doesn’t work. It shows my game history in the app but Astros Playroom is showing the Japanese game title lol. Wonder if they’ve been hacked/DDOS again.
@Kienda yes, you don't need to be online to play digital games...
@ButteredCrumpet are you able to use the app fully? Mine opens and looks ok at a glance, but attempting to eg view my trophies for a game or check my online status falls over.
On console I am unable to
Don’t really want to play anything in case I ended up unlocking trophies etc that don’t then register correctly once things are back online
@Americansamurai1 Nothing to do with digital. Physical games that need PSN to function wont work either atm. And if they are being hacked bc of the digital-only announcement then im sure that the goodwill for the physical fans will dissappear very quickly. Already getting sick of ppl harassing Indie developers who have nothing to do with this decission.
Same here from Deutschland. Every service down.
Sony communicating with customers? That'll be as common as the sun exploding tomorrow.
@Americansamurai1 There's no word of a hack in any of the usual places. I was the one who mentioned a lot of people, both East and West who are disgruntled about Sony's choice to kill physical as it does impact censorship/government regulation/etc. I also said Sony need to prepare themselves for a breech or attack on their digital deliver system, but no one's taken responsibility for what's currently happening and responsibility is a big part of doing it in the first place. Reputation is everything with those groups. Better to wait and see.
Mine is down, I'm in the UK and was streaming via the Portal, went on PS5 instead and it worked for 10 minutes or so and then went down
Playing Persona 2 right now, so I can’t check. But this is one of the many many MANY things that Sony need to sort out and communicate with us before 2028.
I can purchase Saros right now if I want to. Just a few clicks, and it will show up in the post tomorrow. In this scenario, good luck. And let’s not forget, what happens if this sort of stuff happens during GTA 6’s launch?
@Americansamurai1 the network outage affects disc games just the same as it does digital copies.
This is a good warning for Sony to move away from any kind of physical infrastructure they run PSN on and move to an all digital cloud setup.
@GirlVersusGame yeah agree
I can't even get the web-based PS Store to load: https://store.playstation.com/en-gb/latest
Dunno if that's a universal issue, but will not boot for me.
So, to update:
My PS App on iPhone works fine, other than “Game Library”.
Booted up PS5 in household, PS Plus section doesn’t load, and Friend Acitivuty doesn’t load on the Welcome UI menu either.
However, like my PS App, the store is working.
Just booted up Fortnite as a quick multiplayer server and ID check with Sony servers, and it’s failing to load.
My partners PS App logged her out, she then requested text/email 2 Factor code and it took 10 minutes or just under.
Midlands UK - LilaConnect BB.
Ah funny timing. Now imagine this is in 2028 and none of us can buy games. #movewiththetimes 😂
@SteveButler2210 I've just got a game delivered today and I'm now playing it. If I was digital I couldn't have got on the store to even buy it, so not quite the same
@Nalim yeah, but is the ps store still up? Can you buy games on there? I'm not near my ps so wasn't sure but who to say that if the store does go down and you out of luck even games or redeeming games from plus.
Hopefully it's just a short outage.
I'd bet money it's sorted in the next couple hours!
Just one of those crosses to bear for the modern gamer!
@get2sammyb Clicked your link and it loaded for me 🤷♂️
@SteveButler2210 Now “Friend Activity” is back up on the Welcome part of the UI for the PS5.
Trophies are gone from both mine and my partners accounts (my work PSN account won’t even load into my user).
And some other bits now seem to be failing. But I can still purchase a game (tested buying a cheap game off my wishlist).
But then I can’t access the same stuff online.
Ah well, I’m sure it’ll be fixed soon. Like I said earlier on this site, Xbox Network was down yesterday too.
@Oram77 It's working for me now, think it might be coming back.
I thought it was just me when I read everything was fine. Anyway, ‘glad’ to hear it’s not a me thing as nothing is working for me (in the UK)
Wait until GTA launches. The store and servers will crash lol.
@get2sammyb I can get on the link in your comment, and it looks normal
My phone app and the link @get2sammyb put up are both working completely normally for me, UK.
I think it's starting to come back, my Recently Played and friends list are loading again now.
@SteveButler2210 yeah but what happens if the store goes down as well.
@Americansamurai1 Thats true, but the same goes for a lot of physical games now and even more in the future, try buying Halo physical today and playing it without PSN.
So the store is a valid point but other then that i can play my digital games fine atm.
@Nalim yeah sadly a lot of these physical releases have gotten lazy.
Everything work fine on my end but I play offline only so I doubt that I will experience something like that. Only power shutdown can bring me down
I’m at work now, so I can’t mess with PS anyway. Hopefully it’s back to normal once my shift is done.
@Andy22385 if you’d ordered that game digitally you would have been playing it days ago. If you ordered a physical right now it would be days before you’re playing it—unless the PSN outage lasts through the weekend that argument doesn’t hold
So it's Amazon to blame, remind me to give Mr Bezos a slap if I see him on site considering I do a lot of their warehouse upgrades
I'm successfully able to remote into my PS5 from work via Remote Play (sshh) and everything appears to be functioning normally right now.
@Americansamurai1 see above—waiting a few hours for a PSN outage to resolve is still faster than waiting days for a physical copy to arrive
@get2sammyb can concur, the web link seems to be back online.
Hmm. Got up at 5:00AM EST and played for hours with no issues. Before this article I’d not clue this was happening.
@SteveButler2210 in this particular instance, yes, waiting for the digital store to come back online was faster, that may not be the case in the future though.
And through my experience, you don’t tend to wait days for a game to arrive unless it’s from eBay. Preordering new games tend to result in you getting the game on launch day.
Cool welcome to the future of gaming 🤪
@SteveButler2210 not if it released today or I spur of the moment wanted to buy one. And if I order a new game it's delivered release day or a day early, plus I could literally walk to a store and get it, you don't have to wait for delivery. Naturally the outage won't last long but i was pointing to the fact it could go down anytime and we cant do anything. I still remember when it was down for 3 weeks
Gotta love it when the entire planet runs on a single company's infrastructure...
Home screen shows I'm online. But I can't log into any online games, fortnite, CoD MW3.
Settings show connection PSN failed.
@Andy22385 the prevalence of day 1 patches, mandatory downloads etc today renders a lot of this argument moot. If the PSN is down, in a large majority of cases these days, you would not be able to get the intended experience, even for a single player offline game purchased on the high street
@Andy22385 Physical games that need PSN were also effected. Try again.
@Almost_Ghostly but mine didn't. Hence I'm playing it. So try again. Surely you got that point?
@SteveButler2210 but you still could play it and that's the main thing. No idea why people are still trying to argue for an all digital future, everyone loses out
I'm sticking with what I originally said. Sony had the physical market to fall-back on when LizaRdSquAd and Guardians of Peace took them down the last time. People don't like hackers and get that but ethics are taken seriously on that side of net and what Sony are proposing to do with the physical market really is painting a big target on their back. Sadly the customer too. And those are white hats, both rarely collaborate, now both sides see what Sony are doing as serious.
It was only last-week when I was in a chatroom over there when someone dumped a pack of U.S. Army tank schematics (secret specs) in the room, for the LulZ and to protest their military presence in their region. Just a drive-by, I didn't know them. Again today too music from an artist that I love but unreleased and for sale to the highest bidder. I mention music because that too has gone digital and the system the Industry use to share files was once again compromised. I don't trust that Sony entirely understand what a digital only system could do to them if it does suffer massive downtime. Nor do I trust that they can protect their infrastructure, or their customers.
I'm definitely stepping up my retro preservation.
Still unable to view trophies and was previously unable to play a (digital) game... "Cannot play this content, your license is being verified. Try again later".
Welcome to the future 😭
@Andy22385 at least 13% of physical PS5 releases are qualified as cannot be played without a download https://www.doesitplay.org/
A further 14% are noted to have a compromised experience.
So actually, no, a pretty significant chunk of games cannot be played day one, with no internet connection, even physically.
@SteveButler2210 the vast majority of PS5 discs contain the whole game on it. Yes, there are day 1 patches, but they’re usually there for bugs, alongside framerate and graphical improvements.
I agree that playing it without the patch isn’t as smooth, but it’s better than not being able to download the thing because the servers are out.
The future of gaming in one post.
I'm not here to mention any benefits to having physical 🤭
It's definitely recovering, but still got a long way to go.
@SteveButler2210 even if we assume that all 14% of compromised games are unplayable without a patch (which I don’t believe, that still leaves 72% of discs running just fine.
I have all my playstation connections in green but its saying failed
@Valkyria yeah I hope Sony are working on increasing bandwidth seeing as there'll be a lot more traffic come January 2028.
@Andy22385 You're the one missing the point of the people replying to you. Not the other way around.
@SteveButler2210 that's still 87% that can be played without a connection. Massive amount. Not really sure what you're trying to argue really.
I was just wondering what was the matter with online. It's says I'm online but cannot play online see trophies or even buy anything.
@Almost_Ghostly because the point is nonsense. As the guy said above 87% of physical PS5 games can be played without a connection so 7 in 8 games. You're talking like it's 5%
@Topov81 Previously when I tried to view trophies on the app, they were showing as private and now in addition to that my profile image has disappeared from my account. I won't be planning on playing for another 6hrs so hopefully it can be fixed in that time.
@DanteDevilHunter It's definitely improving for me but still doesn't seem to be working properly.
I have a large hedge to trim in the garden and I really needed PSN to be working right now so that I can put it off for another day!
Still can't play Diablo 2. PSN is never gonna work properly, it's too big a job to fix it at this point. They should've rebuilt it after PS3.
@SteveButler2210 That's an exaggeration. Day-one patches are common, but they're usually not mandatory. Many physical PS5 games install and play entirely offline from the disc. Some games do require downloads, but that's nowhere near enough to make physical ownership "moot" for the majority of single-player titles.
Don't bother going back up
Highly amusing given recent developments. Such a beautiful irony.
Which one of my co workers broke something 🫣
Your all digital future. Your library at the mercy of sony's servers staying up lol
Ah, the sweet, sweet digital only future🙄
@Andy22385 February last year, the online authorising system went down for several days and all digital games were unavailable as it couldn't validate the game & account.
However, disc based games were fine - I had Fallout4 digital and that was a no go, quick install from disc and all was OK.
Just booted up for 1st time today (after update 2 above)
@WhatTheFrog Games still work 100% fine. In fact i'm currently downloading the 007 update just fine.
Didn't the same thing happen last year with playstation for the exact same reason
Btw still cant play diablo 4
Eeee, let's hope Anonymous aren't fond of physical games eh?
Removed - trolling/baiting
@DennisReynolds I don’t really see where the lying comes into play. Just because the worst case scenario may or may not be happening right now doesn’t mean that the worst case scenario is never going to happen, which I believe is an extremely relevant concern.
@sanderson72 exactly. And people here are defending them.
@DennisReynolds Sure, whatever you say, but I don't want to see you coming here complaining when publishers start delisting and revoking licenses. And don't say they can't, just look at P.T and Matrix Awakens, they can do what they want if its digital only.
Gosh, I sure do love the entire internet being reliant on Amazon!
@ShadowRJ Some comments on here are acting like you can't play your games right now. PSN could crash completely and you could still play your digital games. People are lying and fear mongering to fuel their agendas despite knowing jack on how any of this works.
@BluWarfareHD Name me a paid game that can be played offline that has been taking away from those who bought it. Look forward to your none answer. Also that Matrix tech demo can still be played by those who own it.
See what i mean fear mongering and lying.
@DennisReynolds it’s entirely possible that it’s a case by case basis, or that the PS5 wanted to verify the user at that particular time. It’s not unheard of for this sort of stuff happening. It’s happened on Xbox Series X before.
@Czar_Khastik Not only that but they definitely need to download more RAM, now that prices are this high. It'll surely save them some money
been powerwash 2 trophies working ok just the store not working
@ShadowRJ he is a rage baiter obviously by his plastic disc comments just ignore people like this imo
I played AC 4 Resynched earlier while it was down and earned 2 trophies - will they be there when things get back online?
@DennisReynolds to the best of my knowledge, this has never happened. I remember a while ago, there were rumours that Konami issued a patch that would make Silent Hills unplayable, but that turned out to not be the case. Closest example would be The Crew, though that was made online only for stupid reasons.
We have seen licensed content get patched out of games before. GTA San Andreas had a song patched out of the PC port because the rights ran out, so the idea that a company could patch an entire game out of existence because they donated want to pay for the rights anymore isn’t impossible. We’ve already seen it with The Crew. Ubisoft didn’t want to pay for the rights anymore, so off it goes.
@ShadowRJ If your console is set to primary then all your offline games can be played just fine.
Happened to be playing a classic Sega Saturn game on retro hardware at the time, so I was blissfully unaware of the outage 😌
@ShadowRJ So yep no paid offline game has been taking from users on PS4/PS5. I can still access delisted games i paid for just fine like the various Marvel games.
@Flippygruffle Yeah they will. They will just sync up once a connection to PSN is found.
Cant enter to do my Infinity Nikki dailies.
I am sad
AWS says everything's resolved but PSN is still showing major issues for me. Will continue to monitor and will update when appropriate.
And streaming is the future 🤪🤣
@Andy22385 And the point you just made is stupid. The same amount of digital games can be played without a connection. 😂
@DennisReynolds Your still not getting it, if I want to buy enslaved odyssey to the west, the only way is to buy a physical version and then you still can't get the dlc, same goes for deadpool, etc. Come the ps6, ANY game you want to play you must buy it, just in case a publisher decides to pull it, as there will be no way to buy it after, the game vanishing into the ether. Like shadows said there is absolutely no reason the crew could not have had a patch to make it playable offline, hell even after MS pulled forza horizon 4 from sale you can still play it online🤦🏻♂️
Again, keep being a sheep to these corporations, letting them get away with whatever they want, your the exact type of consumer they love, one that is willing to bend over and take whatever they give you.
My PS5 is working mostly fine, digital games are launching, there's no psn store or news and trying to access play history/friends/etc. causes the console to hang for 2+ minutes before displaying a system error, but I am able to play games...
However, my playstation portal isn't working at all, even when connected directly to the console (which usually allows it to function as a normal controller).
This essentially means that while my console is working... my controller requires psn in order to function... (I do have a standard controller to use anyway but it's just weird behaviour for the portal to require the Internet to connect via LAN, when it usually works without an Internet connection...)
@DennisReynolds Imagine calling verifiable decisions by Sony 'fear mongering' because you can't refute them. It's easier to sneer about 'plastic discs' than explain why requiring online activation for physical hardware is somehow pro-consumer.
Amazing timing to show everyone how ready Sony’s infrastructure is for an all-digital future…
@Mirage-5x5 no, PC is
@Pat_trick Its fear mongering when you're making up stuff with nothing to support it. If we had a history of stuff to support it then maybe but we don't, we have pretty much nothing.
@wildcat_kickz This is why MS goes down less; it has its own cloud-based services and does not rely on AWS.
@DennisReynolds I don't understand the lies either, I've literally been playing my digital games during the outage. The only games effected were live service games, like I couldn't play NTE or Wutha, that goes for if the games were digital or physical.
@BluWarfareHD You might have had a point if your big example wasn't a PS3 game. Enslaved can't be got on PS4/PS5 because its a PS3 game.
I'm not a sheep i just don't care enough about a what if future around a hobby. Video games could implode into a puff of smoke and i can live with that because my life doesn't rely on video games. Me and partner are discussing having a child, giving she's trans we can't have it the "normal" way so do you really think i'm that concerned over the PS6 dropping discs? Nah i have more important and interesting things to worry and care about. Its not being a sheep its having a life what treats gaming as a side hobby.
@BluWarfareHD no game has been delisted that is not a live service game u still play it if u own it prime example would be marvel ultimate alliance which u can't buy anymore but if u bought the digital version u still play it
@nomither6 of course it is, giving ram is still climbing in price, gpu's are rumoured to be increasing because of silicone allocation being diverted to, you guessed it, AI GPU's, cpu's also rumoured to be getting the same treatment so AMD and Intel can make more Xeon and Epyc cpu's again, you guessed it again, for AI data centres, storage is also at high, but sure PC is the future🙄
Let alone the troubleshooting you have to do with PC that the average console user would be completely lost.
@UltimateOtaku91 Just finished downloading the big 007 update during it. Unless you need a online connection all your games can be played just fine.
@DennisReynolds What does Enslaved being a PS3 game not make it valid, guess what if it hadn't been delisted sony could have put it into the ps3 classics catalogue for streaming🤦🏻♂️ So Deadpool doesn't count either, that is a PS4 game, that has been delisted and the only way to possibly get it is to buy a physical copy. Like I said come the PS6 these games will be completely lost and become vapourware, all the work the developers put in lost.
Keep huffing your copium🙄
@BluWarfareHD Copium? No dude its people like you who are falling back on PS3 games who are coping. I don't care either way dude it doesn't matter to me what Sony do regarding discs. As i said i have far more important things to care about then "cope" over this news that doesn't impact me.
@SteveButler2210 not when you can drive down the street and buy it from a store, or borrow it from a friend
PSN Still down where I am in UK my Firesticks have also been poor since Monday, lagging like crazy.
@Slayer25c your also missing the point, this relies on you buying the game before it gets delisted, currently if you miss out buying a game you can go buy a physical copy and play it, but if all there is digital this cannot be done, the game goes poof, vanishing into thin air lost to anybody that has not bought it.
Hell you have companies like LRG, SRG, VGP, etc, that give these games a possible second life, by giving them a physical release so they are not lost, but guess what that will vanish aswell with the ps6.
@DennisReynolds LoL, thats it troll then run off when real arguments are put forward🤦🏻♂️
@DennisReynolds Nothing to support it? Sony has already removed the disc drive from one PS5 model, made the optional drive require online activation, shut down digital storefronts before, and regularly removes games and content from sale. None of that is hypothetical.
The trend is toward more platform control, not less.
Still down for me, even though AWS said all services were back. UK resident and actually really annoyed at how long it took Sony to even acknowledge something was up.
That's the app back up and able to purchase games again.
Sony have finally admitted there is a problem for everything PSN.
@cadaron as soon as its back up lol
@Pat_trick for the sake of being fair, I’ll say that the disc drive needing an internet connection is due to laws regarding the movie industry. It needs an internet connection so it can’t be used for piracy.
Of course this would happen on Friday and also exactly on the day I need to make use of cloud saves.
@BluWarfareHD I'm concerned about a future where I can't access games I purchased, but saying you can't buy something you didn't buy before isn't a great argument. Just because something is sold at one time doesn't mean it must be sold forever in perpetuity.
3.46pm Friday, Ireland:
On PS5 Welcome hub, Trophies aren't loading, Recently Played is blank, Media Gallery is showing games I've played months ago (but does seem to be slowly catching up).
Can't play Forza Horizon 5, 007 First Light, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle nor Formula Legend (all digital purchases). It says it can't connect to server to verify licence. Suggests Console Sharing and Offline Play but when I go to that, I get an error message.
PS app appears fully functional.
Oh the digital future…. 😂 best get some old discs out if ya wanna enjoy some gaming lads 🙈.. oh you don’t have any? Toooooo bad
Still nothing. Can't play anything right now.
But people saying o this is the sign for the all digital future.
Even discs will do this if it needs a internet connection and guess what? 99% of games now ask for you to be connected to the internet. This is just a modern gaming issue not a digital future.
@IllusiveMan Sadly this case isn't enough to open up people eyes of how bad an all-digital future for Sony console or gaming in general.
@Bez87 https://www.doesitplay.org/
99% of the games? Do you play only Fortnite?
@ShadowRJ That's a fair point. If anything, it reinforces the broader concern rather than weakens it. Regardless of why the online activation exists, the end result is still that physical hardware depends on Sony's servers to function. The reason doesn't change the consequence which is very unfortunate.
@wildcat_kickz great excuse, lets just delist all music or films that are over xx years old, no one wants to buy or listen to the Beatles or wants to watch classic movies such as Casablanca🤦🏻♂️
This is what happens when only a handful of companies, keep the Internet up and running. I say every time they should fix it, but I know that won’t happen.
I blame all the Marvel Tokon folks. They all wanted in on the open beta. They destroyed the servers and now we’re all ruined 🙃
Sony has now acknowledged the issues.
Just rechecked, and things are sometimes working, but only intermittently.
I am still having no issue whatsoever launching games bought digitally.
Still having issues with:
@Nalim Not really if I put my physical Elden Ring copy in it still works.
@BluWarfareHD Not an excuse. A statement of fact. The rights holders would be stupid to stop selling the Beatles catalog or Casablanca, but you're not entitled to them as some fundamental right. You can't demand Ford sell you a Model T just because they sold them in the past.
@get2sammyb hold the phone people, this is a historic moment in human history
PLAYSTATION HAS COMMUNICATED SOMETHING
Pretty sure they had to in this case, but hey ho. At least they’re not trying to silently shrug this one under the rug.
Got to love this all digital future! Everyone gets hiccups but really feel Sony gets more than anyone one else even if we ignore the hacks.
this is baby stuff. How many of you were around in 2011 when the PSN "actually" went down? Like Aaron Rodgers says... Reeeelax
Had my Playstation on throughout, unaware there was an issue, played the game fine but had problems with my trophies not syncing, just as i was doing a platinum clean up too. This would explain why.
@wildcat_kickz Except you can still buy a model T as it exists as physical item🤦🏻♂️ this is my point, if something is digital only and its stop being sold, it is lost, forever. Even if they delisted Casablanca or the Beatles, guess what, there are thousands if not millions of VHS, DVD's, Blu-Rays, 4K Blu-Rays, CD's, Vinyl's, etc so it isn't a lost piece of media, which cannot be said for when games will inevitably get delisted from the digital only ps6🤦🏻♂️
@BluWarfareHD I think you're missing the point. Just because you can't buy them anymore doesn't mean they're lost to time. The publishers probably still have copies. Archives still have copies. I'm not saying it's cool for them to do it, but I am saying it's well within their rights.
I have real concerns about being able to access things you've purchased. Saying you missed out on buying something and it's not available anymore isn't something that's high on my list of concerns.
FOMO is a real thing, but it's not a legal argument.
No online gaming and trophies for me. Pretty pissed because HLL Vietnam open beta just started today.
@Blauwe_Chimay I managed to add the Beta to my game library through the ps app but it doesnt register on console nor does it add it to your downloads pain in the arse
Worked for me just fine.
Good thing they're going all digital and all that...
As everyone has said, this is the all digital future. And our kids are being trained to accept it. My son won’t play wwe because he can’t earn xp on it because he is offline.
Just been playing Timeplitters 2 on PS2 over the LAN with my nephew. No issues here. Just popped the discs in and we played. Didn't even have to sign in. 🤷♂️
@BluWarfareHD What "real arguements"? Fear mongering over future events that may not happen? Moaning you can't play a PS3 game on a PS6? Sure though you "win" i guess your day really really needed that "win" 😬
@Almost_Ghostly wasn't my point about downloading games though? My PSN is still down. 6 hours now. If I thought hey I'll buy a new game. I can't. That is the point.
Also I can’t believe how many people have been programmed to believe their eroding rights are a good thing.
Somehow I knew this would lead to a bunch of "OHHH SEE!!!" from the physical disc people.
So, for analogy sake, let's run through some scenarios.
If this was a hack/DDOS attack: it would be like me saying we shouldn't have physical games because your house or retailers can be robbed.
If services are just down for a bit: it would be like me saying we shouldn't have physical because sometimes the power goes out or shops close for the night.
This doesn't prove or disprove anything about physical vs digital. It's just a thing that happened.
@Hi569
Had to refresh the app a couple of times before I could add it to the library. Downloaded it, started it, got hyped and got a network error...
Nice one, just come back from the pub on my day off hoping for a flick a bit of battlefield and then this. I suppose I'll bust the switch 2 out then.
@Bizzy
If only we could have a new Time splitters.
@Flaming_Kaiser Where did i say ur physical copy of Elden Ring didnt work? My digital copy works aswell so whats ur point? Maybe read before you comment.
Couldn't have happened to a nicer company.

@wildcat_kickz exactly i would argure digital does more for preservation than physical the are many many sites out there that archive games if i wanted to i could download every playstation game (not condoning piracy)ever released if i wanted and even if it got taken down another site goes up rinse and repeat.
@MrStark Xbox live goes down more often than PSN. lol
@BluWarfareHD Also, the plural of vinyl is vinyl 😉
@DennisReynolds The irony of saying I 'know very little' while presenting your own guesses as facts is incredible. 'The PS4 storefront will remain up' isn't a fact, it's your prediction.
Meanwhile, everything I've mentioned has already happened. Optional disc drives, online activation, store closures, delistings...those are facts. You keep explaining why Sony did them as if that somehow makes the loss of consumer control disappear. It doesn't.
I applaud your dedication. Being this consistently wrong while sounding this confident is an impressive feat.
@Andy22385 UK PSN store is working perfectly fine on my end. In fact, all PlayStation services are up and running fine.
Sony is at its all time low. I'm curious to see how that will translate into sales next months/years.
@Bez87 That's complete BS, I could play my disc games with no issue
Still not working in the Netherlands
Just got home from work and wanted to play AC Black Flag resynced - a single player game - only to get the message “Can’t use this content. Can’t connect to the server to verify your license” !!! F*** you Sony 😡
@wildcat_kickz I can’t agree with the idea of games being abruptly pulled from stores to be a low priority. Indeed some of these games barely last any time at all.
Xbox is especially guilty of this. Forza Horizon 4 came out in 2018, and was delisted in 2024. It barely lasted six years.
working for me (i'm in spain right now).
i really didn't notice any issue all day, but i guess it was just luck.
@Shrek_Realista LOL! Sure. An all time low when they're leading in hardware AND software sales by a VERY large margin over both Series X|S and Switch 2? 😂
@DennisReynolds yeah, I actually do think there are merits for the optional disc drive. Beyond cost savings, it means that it makes repair a lot easier. I also agree with you on the PS3 store. Sony clearly weren’t thinking about future proofing at the time, and to be honest it’s only recently when companies outside of Nintendo started actually considering about preservation.
I think the concern about GT Sport is warranted though. The only reason why that game is still playable is because Polyphony patched it to play offline. Something to be applauded for, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to be sceptical, especially since Ubisoft sees no issue in murdering The Crew.
Some lies going on here. You can always play digital games offline unless you just jumped on another console and were trying to signin this very moment the servers went offline.
Given Playstation's lacklustre customer support, could just imagine the irony of PSN tech engineers needing to deal with Amazon Web Services A I. Chat or support...
"Have you tried rebooting your system?!"😋🤣
"GIVE ME A PERSON TO CHAT TO!!"😤😡😂
@DennisReynolds I hope you and your partner resolve your desire to have children.
You say you have more pressing things to worry about as with what I mentioned but you've sure been spending a lot of time here talking about the Playstation topic at hand anyway. 😛
Sony as fast as snails to even acknowledge the problem. They need to spend some of their record profit on communication improvements.
Seems Xbox live was down as well and is also still having some issues.
https://downdetector.co.uk/status/xbox-live/
@TheArt crew motorfest you can’t. Just one example I know of!
@Pat_trick
Its a fantastic thing that Sony removed the disc drive.
Now a lot of people don't have to pay for a disc drive they will never use.
If you want a disc drive, you can buy one and add it on.
If Sony were not to offer an Optional add on disc drive for PS6, and with no method of converting a disc into a digital licence, I would say that would be a bit silly on their part due to some users's disc based back catalogues. BUT, this is not a reality yet - we know nothing of their plans in this area.
@Foxhound majority of modern games now want you to connect to the internet, whether its a disc drive or not.
Im not saying every game.
But there are a hell of alot .
Also even with steam, if you lose internet connection.
You cant play any game, you have to connect once and put it into offline mode and you get 2 weeks before you have to re login
Time to fire up' my Dreamcast for a round of Powerstone or 2.
Looks like it's going to be a long day of SEGA!!!
Well, here's a nice argument against the all digital future they were so proud of.
And on the open beta weekend for their Q3 major release too.
@Rich33 You're treating the current situation as the baseline when it's actually a reduction in choice. We went from 'buy the console with a built-in drive' to 'pay extra for separate hardware that requires Sony's servers to activate.' That's not adding flexibility, it's shifting cost and control from Sony to the customer.
@GamingGod all my games are playable that aren't live service im digital only
If a momentary AWS blip can nuke PSN this badly then how the hell can we trust Sony to keep it steady in a proposed all-digital future 😭
(answer: we most certainly cannot XD)
@ShadowRJ
RE your post #180
I'm fully with you on the subject of optional drives.
Back when I had an Xbox360, I had 2 consoles die from disc drive errors. (It didn't do Xbox any favours when I made my decision to return to Sony for PS4).
1 under warranty, 1 not - even though the first didn't cost me anything, it was still a hassle. A replaceable disc drive would have saved me a lot of money/hassle.
PS I also agree with you on games that become non functional due to devs shutting down servers, when parts of them can be 'saved'.
@MrStark There is absolutely debate to be had because your opinion on XBL vs PSN is 100% subjective. Also, are you aware that you can state your opinions without being an *****?
@Blauwe_Chimay @Blauwe_Chimay I cant even download it tbh keep getting error thanks for info hopefully gets sorted soon
@Pat_trick
No, I see much greater choice in the current situation.
Now, I (and many others) don't have to pay extra for a console, just to have a disc drive that I am not going to use.
But, if I were to suddenly decide I wanted a drive, I can buy one and add it on (with a simple, one time only verification).
That's adding flexibility and choice for me as a consumer, and saving me money as well!
It's times like this I am grateful for having Densha De GO!! on disc. The PS network might be down, but the Yamanote line inside my PS5 is just powering up...
@Almost_Ghostly not here and I'm UK. Hasn't been on since around 9-10am
PS Store isn't working for me, Fortnite, Call of Duty and Zenless Zone Zero doesn't work either, although those are always online games that require psn servers/internet.
I tried a couple of digital games and they seem to be working fine.
@BecauseBecause Well yeah its a day off and i have the place to myself so i have free time to go online and comment on gaming news while i watch rubbish on TV.
Removed - flaming/arguing
@Andy22385 Proof or it's not still down for you. Because I can prove that it's up and everything is working fine in the UK.
@Pat_trick Its not a prediction its a fact. The PS4 and PS5 use the same storefront and the PS6 will use it as well. This was done to future proof things and avoid the issues they had with the PS3 storefront.
Yeah i explained why they did those things because context matters more then your fear mongering and misrepresenting things. Clearly you want to argue in bad faith as that suits you better.
@ShadowRJ Worth noting due to backlash Ubi added an offline mode The Crew 2 and Motorspot.
@Almost_Ghostly can't send photos here. Error every time I click on a game on the store.
@Rich33
It does add flexibility, which is great.
As for saving money... idk boss, Sony hardware isn't known for great hardware deals on that side.
Everything seems fine on my end. Hopefully the case for everyone soon!
You know what does work in an internet outage? Game discs!
@Andy22385 Okay. I won't argue. Sorry if it's still down on your end. I hope it's back up for you soon. Peace. 🙂
@Leonm Guess what also still worked? All of my single player digital games. The thing your missing is that if a game requires internet... It won't work on disc either.
@Hi569
It works for me!
@Blauwe_Chimay I think online games are starting to work again now I managed to add it to downloads
For what’s it’s worth, Amazon Web Services (yes the actual company at fault), appears to be bringing things back online, on behalf of PlayStation.
As whilst I was working my missus appears to have downloaded and started playing Fall Guys.
Which is both a positive and a negative.
I guess now we find out who goes to work, and who is still at school!
Not a great start to the school holidays but the rest of us would have no idea it was down as we haven't turned our PlayStations on since yesterday evening...
In Sony's defence, their service spends less time down than my ISP does.
Agree with another poster though; Xbox Live was and still is miles ahead of PlayStation. Far more reliable, always been far more user friendly, and leading the way with new features.
And this is exactly why people do not want an all digital future. Doesn’t give you much confidence in where your money is going does it ? Where’s the security and assurance your purchases are safe ?
@Dogbreath There’s such things as annual leave, 4 day working weeks, retirement and night shifts. Not everyone using their PlayStations on a Friday afternoon is out of work.
Everything's working again in the Netherlands!
@DennisReynolds No, it's not a fact. The fact is that the PS4 and PS5 currently share the same storefront. The claim that 'the PS6 will use it as well' and that it will therefore remain online indefinitely is your prediction. Those are two completely different things.
And no, context doesn't magically negate the consequences. Explaining why Sony made a decision isn't the same as disproving its impact. Optional disc drives, online activation, and store closures all increase Sony's control over access. That's an observable fact, not 'fear mongering.'
Throwing around 'bad faith' every time someone criticizes Sony isn't an argument, it's a substitute for one. It also shows how much of a blind fanboy you are. If anyone is acting in bad faith here, it's you. You're blind to any valid arguments because they don't suit your narrative.
@Rich33 You're confusing what benefits you with what gives consumers more choice. Choice isn't just about lowering the entry price for digital-only buyers. It's also about preserving the functionality people already had.
Previously, if you wanted a disc drive, you bought the console with one built in. Now you have to buy separate hardware, pay extra for it, and rely on Sony's servers to activate it. That's an additional cost and an additional dependency that didn't exist before.
If you never use discs, great, the digital model is for you. But pretending the new approach is more consumer-friendly for physical buyers ignores the fact that they've objectively lost convenience and independence. You're clearly blinded by only understanding your point of view instead of the overall situation.
Hours before the problem occurred, I tried to access the PSN Store to buy some DLC, but I couldn't see it.
Even so, I never imagined it would end up with a failure like this.
That’s why it’s good to have some physical discs with games guys
PSN doesn’t work, yet I played for several hours. Guess how.
Servers go down, you can't access your games even if they're supposed to be single-player offline games, it's unknown how long the servers will be down.
So this is the digital future that everyone wanted?
Now imagine in the all digital future sony is forcing us into... Yall are screwed... I for one will never buy digital and so with the PS5 my time with them ends... Good riddance.
PSN continues to be held together with duct tape and glue.
I was so confused as to why I couldn't play my Portal (away from on home on holiday). A worldwide failure of service makes sense.
Great timing, Sony! Just when you where winning the digital world cup...
@Hi569 you have your whole library downloaded? Thought not good luck accessing something you want from there in times like this 👍🏻
looks inside
"Amazon"
looks away
nods knowingly
@EfYI it call Amazon having issues u know other companies use other companies for services
So much misinformation spreading in these comments.
Your offline digital only single player games still worked, so no this isn't a "win" for physical disks.
Hopefully it comes back quickly for you guys!
If anything if this goes on longer Sony will have to up there game with psn going forward into the fully digital future!
Sony, their social media platforms, this site's articles and the comments have become a complete farce. It's like watching a gaming society slowly collapse and implode in on itself. The Digital People's Front Vs The Physical Defense Force. Who will lose? Everyone! Absolutely fascinating.
@Pat_trick
I'm not confusing anything.
And to reiterate, as per my original post, I am not talking about what happens in a year and a half (as we do not know the full details yet) - I am talking purely about the change to make the disc drive an optional add on, as you were in the post I replied to.
Customers didnt have the choice to save some money and buy a console without a disc drive, and now (after this change to disc drives being optional), customers do. That is more choice.
What's more, from the slim onwards Sony made it so that even if you want to add (or replace) a disc drive later, you could - more choice.
You have had (for years) the option to buy a console with a disc drive, and you still do. Thus "preserving the functionality people already had". I don't see a one off linking as much of an inconvenience.
I didn't say that the move to optional disc drives had increased choice for Physical buyers - I said it had increased choice for consumers / gamers ie overall.
It is yourself that is blinded by your own point of view, as you seem to only consider physical buyers.
I'm not even considering that physical disc purchases are now firmly in the minority.
The decision to make the disc drive optional did not remove any choice from yourself as a physical disc user, but it gave extra choice to those who don't want a disc drive, thus overall, choice was increased.
@UltimateOtaku91 As much misinformation as the anti disc crowd spreads claiming that 99% of physical games are unplayable without an internet connection, even though 75-80% are, am I right?
I just downloaded A Plague Tale: Innocence and played with no issue. Digital. I feel like some of you “physical” people don’t quite know how these things work. Or you’re trying to push a narrative.
Working fine for me. Currently playing the Marvel Token beta.

Guess timezones and the internet aren't a thing on whatever backwater country you live in.
@ChikaBambus I think it’s mainly the broccoli hair kids who’ve been glued to screens since they were 6mo old.. never got to open up a surprise video game for Christmas and everything they’ve ever wanted media-wise was delivered to them instantly via the almighty and all knowing internet genies (or however the internet thing works)
I've been playing marathon with wildcat kicks this evening and everything was hunkey dorey...
@Ashina This is absolute misinformation. Single player offline games were completely accessible.
@Pat_trick No the reason the store has been designed the way it has is for future proofing. You can think otherwise i don't care but what Sony has said means more then you.
Yeah context matters it always matters. You don't want context because it harms your points. Look at it this way my Cat last year violently bite me so by your logic she's violent and will do it again, context is though she was extremely scared because a dog tried to attack her and chased her inside and because of that she was scared and lashed out. See how context changes things?

@Andy22385
We'd have to go..... outside!!!!
@Deadhunter and you see how many people upvoted that bit of misinformation from @Ashina
This is how misinformation spreads. No one will ever vet anything that confirms their biases.
@DennisReynolds If any of you did not care, and if your lives do not revolve around gaming as you continuously preach, you wouldn't engage with any of the posts, or comments, and you would leave people to voice their complaints, and rightfully so.
Would be funny if it wasn’t so sad.
@Ashina absolutely no problem playing digital single player games. My 2 boys couldn't play Fortnite or Gta online but they could play Gta story no problem.
I was at work thankfully so missed all this today
@BluWarfareHD everything is expensive now & PC is nowhere near as difficult as it used to be. people that spew that same rhetoric probably hasn’t touched a PC since the early 2010s.
Console is a bigger ripoff than PC as of 2026 & has been for a while now.
This is why it's good to be multiplatform. I'm just currently playing modded souped up GTA 4 having the best time on my PC not even seeing this mess firsthand.
@Dogbreath Yeah I was at work all day, if it wasn't for my mate messaging me I wouldn't of even known it was down. I finished at 9pm as I don't work a Dolly Parton 9-5 job like some people.
Tokon beta gave me a connection error and my friends list is missing, there is no way in hell it just went down again right?????
@nomither6 it’s not about “ripoff”. It’s about affordability. You may get more for less with PC. But when that more for less is still running you roughly $2000, I don’t think most can afford that. While an $800 console is expensive, it’s far more affordable than a standard gaming PC that starts around $1500.
I have been able to play all my single-player games offline all day long.
@Ashina Please delete or edit this inaccurate comment. Single-player games you own are playable offline and do not require an internet connection.
@Leonm Or single-player digital games that I have been playing today.
PSN really is the worst of the 3 online experience. And dang, it's really not the cheapest one.
@darylb24 what about when the licence expires? Thats not if and its not just relevant to a server outage either.
There's a hacker out there that I know Sony has pissed off. Im waiting for the day when one them brings Sony down again like 2011. Their engineers and security are *****, so its just a matter of time.
If you want to push out digital only then at least make sure your so called digital platform works. This is just not good enough considering they want all to rely on this in the future.
Not sure if it’s a PSN issue still lingering or what but I can’t get into the Tokon beta. Just says servers are under maintenance over and over.
@Ashina What a joke of a post.
Been on Xbox the last couple of days playing the excellent Planet Crafter on GP. I'm already all digital but Sony need to up their game if they want an all digital future. Pretty sure you can play your single player games offline though, it only becomes a problem if you game share your digital games and your console isn't the main/home console.
ROFL, Sony deserved this wholeheartedly. Got what they deserved for killing discs and ignoring the backlash. Cowards
some youtubers trying to make this a bigger issue then it deserves saying this is why all digital is a bad thing..
@johnedwin Now why doesn’t that surprise me, must base their next video ideas on the comments section of this site.
I doubt many are focusing on this being a fault of Amazon Web Services and the fact Amazon Firesticks have also been dodgy lately haha.
I need a YouTube channel, apparently it’s easy to create content, you just think of how to misinform in the most dramatic fashion, and the rest takes care of itself.
@johnedwin I mean content that you paid for becoming unusable because of a server went down is literally one of the most obvious disadvantages of an all-digital future, people have every right to complain about it if you ask me XD
@DennisReynolds That's a false analogy. I'm not claiming Sony will do something because they did it once. I'm pointing out a pattern of decisions that have consistently increased Sony's control over the ecosystem: optional disc drives, online activation, store closures, delistings, digital licensing, etc. Those are all real events.
Context explains why a decision was made. It doesn't erase what the decision was or its consequences. Saying the disc drive requires online activation for legal reasons doesn't change the fact that it now depends on Sony's servers.
And again, you're presenting your own prediction as fact. That the current storefront architecture was designed with future-proofing in mind doesn't guarantee it will remain online indefinitely. Technical design doesn't obligate Sony to keep a service running forever. That's a business decision, not a technical one.
You're really blind to the limitations of your logical fallacy.
@Rich33 You're defining 'more choice' purely as 'more purchasing configurations,' while ignoring the quality of those choices.
Yes, digital-only buyers now have a cheaper entry point. Nobody disputes that. But physical buyers lost an integrated drive and gained a separate purchase, an online activation requirement, and another piece of hardware that depends on Sony's continued support.
That's a trade-off, not a free increase in choice.
If Sony had kept the built-in disc model and offered the detachable drive as an additional option, I'd agree that choice had increased. Instead, they replaced one option with another that comes with extra cost and dependency for physical users.
So the question isn't 'did digital buyers benefit?' They clearly did. The question is whether the change was an unqualified increase in consumer choice. It wasn't, it benefited one group while making the experience objectively worse for another.
You keep being limited by seeing things only by your personal experience.
@Pat_trick You know i'm not going bother responding to any of it. Isn't on you its just i had my account mass reported by some people who take issue with my stances and tried to get me banned. My account was unblocked but its not worth the hassle of saying something someone doesn't like and then have them try and get be banned. To be clear i'm not saying you did it i have no idea on who did but i would rather not say anything more on this thread again after this.
get used to it. this is the digital future some of your guys want. and don't think sony will ever truly be safe from hackers.
@Pat_trick
"You're defining 'more choice' purely as 'more purchasing configurations,' while ignoring the quality of those choices."
Before this generation, Customers did not have the option of buying a Sony console without a disc drive - by them introducing optional drives everyone now has that choice.
That is not a buying configuration- that is a new option/choice.
They first did this with 2 separate models, which was not ideal as you couldn't easily add a disc drive later if you originally bought digital and changed their mind. They remedied that with Slim and Pro.
Are these extra choices in favour of digital users - yes, but not at the real detriment physical buyers. Of course they wanted to add more options for digital users - why would anyone want to pay extra for a disc drive they are not going to use, and with digital users increasing, and physical buyers decreasing, they had to act and increase options.
"But physical buyers lost an integrated drive and gained a separate purchase, an online activation requirement, and another piece of hardware that depends on Sony's continued support."
These things aren't exactly difficult to fit, and they come with a nice cover that perfectly integrates them. Its not like they need connecting with a cable away from the console taking up additional space. They need a one time connection to link.
Even if every PS5 had a disc drive, Sony would still be able to stop supporting discs in a year and a half.
In terms of the future.
I am still on the fence about their decision to stop supporting discs, and I will be until I see what plans they have in regards to digital.
I understand Sony's decision will upset those who still only buy discs.
I will add though that some of the extreme silliness I have heard and read does not really endear this cause to me, and that includes people attacking / insulting those who don't see Sony's decision as wrong. There has been some incredibly bad behaviour from some, even here on this site (in comments sections).
To a lot of people, Sony's decision is just the next logical step due to decreasing physical sales. I am not quite in this 'camp" either though.
I said, from pretty early on that if physical users want to send a message to Sony, they should do this in a noticeable way, refusing to buy digital (particularly in the case of games like GTA6 where there is no other option). I would even extend this to games that don't put the whole code on the disc, although I would not include Indie/ small dev teams who realistically have no choice.
If there truly are enough people to whom discs are important, Sony will notice.
The trouble is other options people are taking are not being helpful. The bombarding of comments may just look like a loud angry minority. Boycotting Sony games will actually skew sales heavily towards Digital (if physical buyers don't buy, digital buyers still will). And 'kicking the can down the road' when people say they won't buy PS6 won't be noticed by anyone.
Alright, back up exactly when my regular gaming time is!
And apparently this was an issue with Amazon Web Services, so not even anything to do with Sony themselves. Don't let that little morsel of truth get in the way of a good doomscroll, self-loathing rage post, or watching some YouTuber grifter's drama video!
@Digit2021 “All digital” is still 2 years out. So much can change in 2 years. The current PSN infrastructure probably won’t support an all digital landscape. Which is probably one of the reasons why they didn’t immediately drop the physical route.
All digital. What could possibly go wrong?
@DennisReynolds you make an excellent point, and one I've wondered silently about many, many times. Anybody getting THIS worked up about not being able to swap discs starting in 2028 must have an idyllic life with nothing substantial to actually worry about.
Maybe as an apology they can keep making physical seeing as how everything goes to a complete shambles with digital only....... I'm joking. All digital is irrelevant at this point, we all just may as well get used to it
The future of gaming. Is the server up? You can play. If not, tough cookies.
@Slayer25c
I guess as a lazy consumer I blame whatever logo I see in front of me.
I had no idea that Amazon was part of the PSN infrastructure or whatever you'd call it.
@Dogbreath What is more user friendly about it? You log in and play a game. There's nothing more user friendly about either of them. More reliable? XBL goes down more often than PSN. New features? What exactly are those new features?
XBL almost never goes down. In 2011 they had their servers up in a few days, PSN took weeks maybe longer. XBL is 10x more stable than PSN.
It's been kind of interesting to see how much everyone lost their s*@# when they lost access to something they love for a few hours. Maybe now some of you will have a bit more empathy for those of us who feel that not having a physical option is a deal-breaker. The difference is that we've basically been told to go f*@# ourselves for the rest of our lives by Sony and many of you.
I'm in a lucky position where I've already built a collection I'm happy with and can easily live without PlayStation going forward. It's the people who can't afford the outrageous prices of digital or retro games and rely on the secondhand physical market to participate that feel sorry for the most. The stupid digital cash cows lining up to be milked dry, less so, they all have an important lesson to learn.
I didn’t think it was called PSN anymore.
@get2sammyb Uh??? I think Crunchyroll and Spotify might be having similar issues right now. Could this be related to the earlier issues across the PlayStation Network? I'm not sure if Sony runs those services on the same servers, which is why I'm asking!
That's strange, ironically I was on the ps3 store for a couple of hours, and I didn't have any problems 😂
@DennisReynolds Just so you're aware, I completely disagree with you but I wouldn't try to get you banned. I think you're sometimes inflammatory with your language, but to me that doesn't justify trying to ban you.
I'd rather argue with you to represent people that have a similar opinion to mine than to silence you.
@Rich33 I think we've reached the point where we simply disagree, and that's fine.
My main issue is that you're defining 'more choice' purely by the number of purchasing options available today. I'm looking at it from the perspective of consumer rights and ownership. If one group gains a cheaper entry point while another group loses an integrated feature, gains an online dependency, and has to pay extra for functionality they previously got built in, I don't see that as an unqualified increase in choice.
I also don't think 'physical sales are declining' is, by itself, a justification. Companies respond to consumer demand, but consumers are equally entitled to criticise decisions that reduce ownership, convenience or long-term preservation. Those two things aren't mutually exclusive.
I also don't think it's fair to dismiss concerns because some people behave badly online. Every topic has people who are obnoxious. The strength of an argument should be judged on its merits, not on the behaviour of the loudest people making it.
So I think we've both explained our positions clearly. I understand why you see this as the logical direction for Sony. I simply think it's a direction that gives Sony more control while giving physical users a worse deal, and that's a perfectly reasonable thing to criticise.
@thesorrows I once got on a long haul flight and my Switch wouldn’t let me play my digital games in airplane mode. I couldn’t access the plane’s WiFi through the Switch either.
I had to google it when I landed and change some setting. On the flight home it worked fine.
That’s why I was checking what the situation was for PlayStation.
@Leonm The licence doesn't expire once it is fully in place. When you buy a new game, it's a 30-day licence, then a permanent one for newly purchased games, but I highly doubt PSN would be down for 30 days, as AWS is pretty good most of the time.
@johnedwin thats because all digital is bad. At least in its current format where 10 companies own everything and we own nothing. Sony literally just deleted a bunch of movies from peoples libraries that had been fairly purchased
@darylb24 i get licence checks after 5 days. Also youre forgetting that sony can just decide at any time to revoke your licence for no good reason like theyve done several times since 2014
@ButteredCrumpet how is it misinformation? Whether it was because of amazon or sony, the facts of the matter is psn was down
I just dont think im going to get a ps6 at this point. If i start saving now, i can have a computer that does everything better. My current computer is from 2012 and does everything the ps5 does, but has no disc drive. That was literally all sony had going for it from my perspective. I was far more impressed with the series x i got 2 years after my ps5. That runs pc games.
@UltimateOtaku91 single player games worked only if you had them downloaded already. If you have a disc published by a proper company that has its content on it (~90% do) you can put the disc in and play, regardless of an outage at the psn or an issue with your ISP. You also don't need to wait for ages for it to download or buy TBs of storage to have all games downloaded all of the time.
I myself buy 90% digitally, but the games i love only physically, as they're mine and playable anytime, even if sony itself shuts down.
But, the main point everyone disregards is - you put thousands of pounds into a digital library that is only safe until your account gets hacked or Sony bans you or your country from psn (or a license for the content expires and it's delisted as 500 of movies were).
@darylb24 i don't understand why digital can't co-exist with physical. Both have their pros and cons, physical lovers don't argue to ban digital, i buy most games digitally, just let those who love physical games have them, along with game ownership which should be improved for digital licenses too.
Digital lovers somehow get irritated by people who don't want to see their preferred format die (for many practical reasons outlined here earlier), despite digital not being under threat anyway. We can all co-exist and ps5 showed it nicely with separate options for all.
As for declining physical sales mentioned by someone earlier - they aren't that low and were also driven by Sony decreasing disc production over the years with people not being able to find a physical copy at times, so it may be a self fulfilling prophecy.
I found it kind of crazy that I couldn’t even get into the game in BF6. Which meant that I couldn’t even play the story mode offline, if that’s what I wanted. Not nice.
@Leonm I’ve looked at your comment history since 2020, it would appear you’re not even wanting to be a part of PlayStation. In fact spending 6 years not really showing any interest at all.
Therefore my best advice would be to leave the brand, leave this site and get on with other wonderful things you enjoy in your life.
I mean your entire history since 2020 is negative. No thanks.
I love the great communication from Sony let's just say nothing.
@Leonm Don't waste your breath, trolls feast on friction and arguments, and it's clear @ButteredCrumpet only knows how to verbally attack people and scream "Fake News"...
@Fizza I mean as long as it's downloaded and your console is set to primary, you don't simply lose your games if the servers go down, that said physical is still FAR BETTER for game preservation! There's absolutely no sane way of denying that fact.
@TensuraFan7 You're definitely correct there but with the way Sony is going right now, it wouldn't surprise me if they found a way to muck that up too XD
@TensuraFan7 Verbally attack and scream? Good gosh you sure do know how to escalate things quickly don’t you?
The only troll between them and I is clearly them, the fact all they’ve done in 6 years is post negative comments.
Honestly, what compels you to jump on and defend a stranger that is so clearly negative.
A troll, feeds off negativity, so go on, look at their comment history and tell me where they’ve tried to be anything but negative.
Think before you comment. You’ve literally just defended a troll by calling someone else a troll.
All you’ve achieved is to lower your apparent social score in this thread. Congratulations.
Bunch of people in here complaining about physical games are now complaining about digital games and service. Pick a lane!
@Leonm "I was far more impressed with the series x i got 2 years after my ps5. That runs pc games."
No it doesn't. I have a series X and I have a gaming PC rig. Series X runs Xbox games, PC runs PC games. The Pc code is not able to run on both.
We are all expecting project Helix to be a PC that will run PC games , but I'm afraid stating that a series X does so is just madeupium.
@TensuraFan7 "There's absolutely no sane way of denying that fact."
I know three people that lost their entire physical collection of games - two from burglary one from a house fire. No way they can ever get them back. Not surprisingly, they would disagree with your assertion and I believe they are all buying digital now.
Its simply not as black and white as people like to pretend.
@ButteredCrumpet its been so long i dont even know what i wrote in the past but you shouldnt get so offended on behalf of a multimillion dollar company that wants to fleece you XD If im quiet, im happy, if im not happy imma make a stink and you cant stop meeeeeee. I pointed out a flaw in your logic and you told me to leave, not gonna happen. I used to adore the playstation but then the ps4 happened and it was meh and then the ps5 happened and it was good but its what they promised the ps4 pro to be so i was underwhelmed. On top of that, the services provided are fragments of their former selves.
Im a fan as much as you are but im able to see that the company doesnt value fans like it used to and im gonna call them out on it, because thats what you should do if you want things to be better, not just agree mindlessly or run away.
@TensuraFan7 d9nt worry about it, i thrive on trolls like how they thrive on normal people who arent weird lol
@Titntin dude..... i didnt mean every pc game, but when i loaded my series x for the first time and saw the full version of age of empires 2 de and not a shoddy console port like the ps2 version; i was so excited. They have a few more pc games available, but that one is special to me because i grew up with that game. I didnt even mention how i can play almost all of my original xbox discs. Even the ones so damaged that they dont run on my original xbox
@Titntin theres freak events like fires and robberies and then theres a corporation wiping an entire piece of media off the face of the earth. The 1 doesnt compare to the 100. I would love all digital but the big companies ruined it.
@Titntin You misquoted my comment. The "There's absolutely no sane way of denying that fact." was in reference to physical media being better for game preservation than digital, which it is. And I never said if your console gets burgled that there is no possibility of having your account stolen. I was mostly saying that you don't lose your games if PSN or your internet simply go offline as long as your PS5 is set to primary...
@TensuraFan7 Hey sorry if I misquoted you, not my intention, sometimes with all the back and forth posts you can lose track!
The point of mentioning burglary and fires was that sometimes having your 'licence to play' tied to a physical disk can be a disadvantage as they can break, get damaged or stolen and then they are gone for ever, which is clearly not the case for a digital licence. I'll be honest with you, I cant really remember which point I was answering though, but I did mention it as it seems to be rarely brought up in the discussion!
Have a good day!
xbox servers are down.
@MrStark So superior it was down for 20 hours 😂😂.
@johnedwin The Xbox situation was worse as it was down for 20 hours plus people couldn't even play their disk games due to DRM.
@UltimateOtaku91 It was down for some not all and for different amounts of time (you of course chose 20 hours) , it's a shame Sony don't simply come out and tell people what the problem was, you have to look to Microsoft to get the answer the CTO openly said what had happened.
"Late last night, a licensing service that sits outside of XBOX, but which XBOX depends upon, began failing. This caused some sign-in scenarios to fail, and it caused many scenarios that require an entitlement check to also fail, such as listing out your Full Library and launching games that you own. It also affected several of our publishing and store partners who depend on those same systems which is why some of you saw issues in specific games and not others."
The Xbox exec goes on to explain that once they "isolated the failing infrastructure" the Xbox Support team got to work fixing the issues, which led to the service coming back "unevenly across regions which is why some of you recovered hours before others."
@UltimateOtaku91 i heard about it but i didnt experience it personally. It did make me go "cmon maaaan" out loud though XD
