We have been slating the PS5's early access pre-order incentives here on Push Square for some time now, but the latest example, tied to Control Resonant, just seems a bit sad.
Overnight, at State of Play, the PS5 sequel was confirmed for a 24th September 2026 launch. If you pre-order the Digital Deluxe Edition of the game, you get 48 hours of early access, granting you access from 22nd September.
This is now a fairly standard pre-order offer, but it becomes slightly silly when it turns out that incentive will theoretically make Control Resonant a PS5 console exclusive for two days. This is because the early access pre-order bonus has not been offered for either the PC or Xbox Series X|S versions.
An early access pre-order offer is now a PS5 exclusive feature.

Is this a positive for anyone that plans to purchase Control Resonant on PS5? Sure, but I can't help but feel this is just a bit sad, and a reflection of where we're at with pre-order incentives nowadays. An early access pre-order bonus is a PS5 exclusive.
Communications director Thomas Puha clarified on social media the pre-order offer is indeed a PS5 exclusive:
What any future Xbox Series X|S owners of Control Resonant may rightfully feel sour about is the Digital Deluxe Edition of the game is the same price on both consoles. It's £59.99 / $69.99, and the PS5 version objectively offers better value with 48 hours of early access.
Control Resonant will almost certainly be a fantastic game when it arrives this September, but this exclusive pre-order bonus just comes across a little silly. An early access pre-order bonus is a PS5 exclusive. Surely we can do better than this, guys.
Besides two days extra to play the game, early access to Control Resonant could at least ever so slightly loosen the load on the September 2026 release schedule. It's launching on the same day as Silent Hill: Townfall and just a day before Onimusha: Way of the Sword.

That's ABSOLUTELY nuts! WTH Remedy?! Is this what we're doing now? Gatekeeping early access on just one console? Gurl that's so vile, I'm sorry...
I like anything that makes me feel superior to my fellow man
I mean it's not the end of the world really.
Sony will have the data that likely shows something and they're going forward with an exclusive window.
No doubt this has happened before but wasn't picked up on.
I'll admit I'm part of the problem - I preordered the Deluxe Edition of Saros purely to get those two days of early access - so I get the appeal. But there's a difference between a publisher offering early access as a preorder incentive across all platforms and locking it exclusively to one console. The latter just feels predatory and slightly ...irrelevant.
Is this part of a marketing deal with PlayStation? Because if Sony has put money into securing timed exclusivity on a multiplatform sequel, that's a troubling direction for the industry. This is not worth any investment.
Remedy deserves every bit of support after how long and hard the road to Control 2 has been, but not like this.
Frankly I find all preorders in the current era fundamentally pointless.
In the 90s and early 2000s when effectively everyone bought their games in a store it made sense to ensure the store actually received your game (many games would have never been sold in store or location a or b or only had a small day one supply that was never restocked but if you ordered it they would get some copies ). Sometimes you even got a T-shirt or some other physical merch you might actually use.
Now you either get skins or items that are either crap or should have been in the game by default or you get asked to pay more for a early access period that some people will get for free because their copy is sent out early and you may not even have the day one patch available.
Yippee.
Not a big deal, its only 2 days,
TBH Remedy always feels like they are just 1 bad title away from complete studio closure. They are trying so hard to not be bought out... Like so many other studio before them.
They are looking for any possible avenues to make extra money cause their games simply don't bring in what they put out.
Pretty sure 2 days wont impact my decision on platform to buy it on, but it is still rather silly.
Anyone who can't wait 48 hours more for a game....well, further words fail me.
Unless there is reason for physical pre-orders like a steel book the above cobblers isn't getting my wonga. Not surprised with Control 2 though let's face it Alan Wake 2 was digital only at first so they are experts at this kind of jazz.
Love that cold "Yes" in response to Abu's excessive enthusiasm.
Very silly but I'm sure remedy would of snapped that money out of Sony's hand for this!
It's basically free money for something trivial could end up happening a lot more in the future!
If a game is ready why not make it playable for all your audience. I just couldn’t support greedy game devs
So only Playstation owners get the chance to pay extra in order to play the game in its objectively worst state? Exclusivity aside, I'll never understand this compulsion.
That is a bit crazy. Early Access for story games already is a bit icky, but locking it to one platform is mad.
I'll pick the super late access edition, the one that comes with bug fixes and heavy discount.
@get2sammyb Given how thin Remedy's profit margins tend to be, it's pretty clear that Sony just dropped a load of cash at their feet. Hard to say "no" to that as a business. I'd lay the blame for this at Sony, rather than Remedy.
I think we dont consciously as gamers realize sometimes how much game development is. That tidbit along with the fact that your game may not make a profit in this climate would lead any developer to make deals with the companies. Alan wake 2 was incredible and didn't sell nearly as many copies as I feel it should have based on estimates shared. Simply making good games doesnt guarantee success anymore sadly so if a company offers you money for some exclusive deal, that incentive holds more power now.
On Sony's side of things, why not do this. They are a company trying to make their console more appealing than the next. This is strategy at the end of the day. I wouldn't like it really if xbox dod this deal since I'm a playstation gamer, but I would understand that it is simply strategy and only two days early access. A lot of people get 4 to 7 days early access with early physical copies and pay the same amount as ys digital owners but are able to trade their game in. There are different advantages across the industry at different points in time so I feel this is really a non-issue when you really consider the reasoning behind it and volatile state of the industry now.
I'll probably play it years later when the bugs are fixed and all story DLCs are available.
it depends if i have other games to play i don't care about early access , but i have done it before say like resident evil i could play it a few days early and im going to play it the second it comes out , i'm all for it, but i don't mind them offering this at all.
Advanced access is bad enough, but exclusive advanced access is really pushing acceptability. I love Remedy but it’s clear they will literally do anything for money. Can’t say I blame them too much though—I, too, would probably do pretty much anything for money.
Remedy is the company that makes great games, but cannot seem to completely breakthrough to the mainstream. Stuff like this doesn't help.
I don't really have a problem with this 🤷🏻♂️. This is a website about PS. And a few days of early access is the main reason to pre-order a game.
Is there even a physical edition? Or is that gonna be a year and a half later?
People accuse Xbox of throwing money around to keep things off of other platforms, and yet Sony is essentially doing the same thing and it's getting glossed over.
It's still scummy, regardless of platform.
In the words of Jeremy Clarkson "Oh no, anyway..." 😂
Why would anybody get upset about this? It's 2 days? Of all the non stories.
An exclusive opportunity to test bugs and, based on history of other games, possibly lose all progress anyway and have to restart.
This is probably my most anticipated game right now and I have both a PS5 and Xbox. But even though I could get the early access, I won’t be supporting this model. No deluxe edition for me. Really stupid move.
Paid early access is gross. It’s becoming more prevalent and widespread in the industry. I wish people didn’t reward publishers for this practice. I can understand deluxe editions giving in-game skins, bonus, additional music or some type of actual reward. Paying extra for absolutely nothing other than delaying the release for others is an industry practice that needs to cease.
@Divergent95 I wouldnt say Remedy are to blame for this i suspect sony paid for the exclusivity
@wildcat_kickz exactly sony paid for this exclusivity
Absolutely ridiculous, there's literally no benefit to playing a single-player game early. And the benefit to playing a multiplayer title early equates to a literal pay-to-win model. So all in all it's something that needs to just die.
When compared to the Alan Wake 2 situation (permanent EGS exclusive), this Control Resonant situation is by far the lesser of evils.
@Grumblevolcano Epic did publish Alan wake 2 so they get to decide where it can be sold
if you give a mouse a cookie...
This is both a bit silly, and completely unsurprising at the same time.
They are launching into an incredibly busy period, around a week later than a PS5 Exclusive that is expected to be a sales juggernaut.
They need every little bit of extra 'goodwill' / hype / news they can get.
And I don't think Sony paid a penny for this - it makes no sense with Wolverine and Onimusha in the same window.
Wait so now we're moving the goal post here. So pay to play early is now fine but not when it's exclusive?
The entire pay to play early thing is sad. Mainly because people will actually pay more to play something a few days early. These practices only exist for the gullible souls that fall prey to this psychological exploitation.
That aside, I thought remedy was better than this, but alas, any entity designed entirely around profit is never going to resist in the long run.
And paid early access has proven to be a very good thing - choose it or not, it means performance (eg DF) reviews are out in the the pre order period (which only ends when the standard version launches), so you can still get the bonuses if you want to.
Quit calling this "early access" and call it what it really is - delayed launch.
This might be an unpopular opinion but I enjoy the early access incentive. Being able to play a game I’m really looking forward to for an extra $10 is an easy choice. Also, making early access console exclusive is just part of the console wars. Good for competition and competition is good. Microsoft can and will do the exact same thing
I'm not a fan of early access at all but anything that leaves PC and Xbox players out in the cold, even if it's just for a few days is totally fine by me.
This is a huge monetary waste for Sony to make this 48 hour early access deal.
