This is a pretty cool idea. Anyone who'd be interested in the Vita but doesn't like or simply can't play games on a handheld would probably be interested, and since it has HDMI-out it should make streaming and recording them easier for anyone into that stuff.
Definitely worth keeping an eye on, can't wait to see how things go.
@ShogunRok Yep, same here. I guess what they say about indie devs taking over the creative side from the past is true, even Yoshida seems to agree.
I'm really hoping that with the shorter development times and this last generation of hardware enduring the industry's growing pains next gen will smooth out the rough spots and put today's echnology to good use.
@rjejr
That could be it. i've played with the settings on my little SD TV over component and you can notice a difference between 480P, 720P, and 1080i but its still not that big of a difference.
People are used to seeing big leaps like we saw going from PS1 to PS2 though so that could be part of it too. The early games looked good but probably not good enough for all the hype about 1080P and everything, especially since most were only sub-HD and many people still had SD displays.
Anyway, I'm excited to see how much X86 changes things. Not just with consoles but across the board since most games will be made for standard PC architecture.
Second Son reminds me a lot of X-men, more so than the first two games. Thats a very good thing if you ask me, one of may favorite things about the series is how it handles powers.
Sucker Punch seems to be going in the same direction with Infamous so I can't wait to see what else they have in store. The more off-beat the better I say. Maybe plant-based powers, the game takes place in the evergreen state after all, or something like sound.
@Lelouch Just like digital distribution would kill CDs, right? The way we define consoles might change but I don't see them disappearing anytime soon. Besides, I doubt the big three would just sit by and let it happen.
@Legendaryboss Thats what I'm hoping for too, what with development times back down to PS1 levels and all. Time is money after all.
I think this should really help, its the over-all cost thats important to most people. Spending a few dollars here or there on your mobile device is one thing, but with consoles the costs start adding up really quick. Being able to get a Vita, a game, and an 8gb stick all for slightly more than the Vita's original price is a huge step in the right direction.
Its certainly making my decision to get a Vita over another PSP that much easier, I know that much at least.
Can't really see this as a good deal unless your the type who usually plays only one or two games at a time, or want it mainly for digital only and PS1/PS2 games.
Although I guess if none of the bundles appeal to you buying a $200 console and popping in a bigger harddrive would be a smart choice.
@ViciousDS
I think the price has something to do with it, just not too much by itself. $250 isn't too bad but knowing you'll have to spend $250 plus upwards of $30 for memory before even buying a game makes for quite a bit of sicker-shock.
Right now Sony is doing what many companies have done in the past, in advertently priced themselves out of the market. Nintendo just has a certain knack for finding the right balance between content, perfomance, and price, thats why they've done so well. The 3DS not selling at the same price shows its not the Nintendo name thats sells handhelds.
@MadchesterManc Which ones did you try? Haven't played every one myself but from what I've heard they're kinda hit or miss. Even the "worst" games in the series have their fans.
If they make it clear that things like remote-play and cross-play are a big part of the two and the PS4/Vita bundle has everything you need to get started, I think it could work well. They just need to make sure they're clear that the Vita is a stand-alone device, not a companion to the PS4.
I'm more interested in the Vita right now but being able to get both for $250 each is still pretty tempting, especially since the wifi Vita is that much by itself.
I don't think all games need multiplayer but as long as it doesn't affect the rest of the game I don't mind it. If it turns out a dud nobody will bother with it anyway.
What I don't like is this stigma that single-player doesn't sell. Not only do games like Dark Souls and Skyrim disprove it, but everone who blurts it out is a hypocrite. What happens to all those yearly releases when the latest game comes out? What do people do with those multiplayer focused games when the multiplayer wears thin? People trade-in those games for the exact same reasons as single-player games.
Make games worth holding onto and people will keep them. I see stacks of yearly released and multiplayer focused games sitting on shelves, but I rarely see games from Atlus, Nintendo, or Bethesda.
@ajaychitown Thats certainly true, and we all do that. The scary thing about that though is it goes to show just how many people think a certain way. Can you imagine every person you see stiring up trouble on the internet being that way on the inside in real life?
I'm not bothered by this, I though they'd reserve some RAM and a couple cores. Its not a big deal at all really, most PC games don't use more than a quad-core CPU and 4 GBs of RAM right now, nevermind what consoles have been stuck with.
What this means though is that the PS4 and Xbox One will be much closer perfomance-wise than people think.
@ajaychitown
Thats pretty much what it is. There have been studies showing that people who become attached to a brand do start to see it that way. The anonymity of the internet makes things so much worse though since people can get away with comments that would normally result in getting their teeth knocked out.
@MadchesterManc Ok, I get what your saying now. I didn't know the PS3 had more than just the "emotion engine" built in. Yea, pretty much having a PS2 built in would definitely account for the high launch price, and the original size of the console.
@MadchesterManc I doubt the PS2's emotion engine contributed that much to the price, for one thing the PS2 was around $130 at the time so the chip couldn't have been that expensive to produce. The PS3 had $800 or so in hardware, a good chunk of that was the blu-ray drive seeing as stand-alone players were about $1,000 back then.
Just because you have more units doesn't mean your product will sell better. The only adavntage I could see is people who don't care what console they get and just pick whatever is left, but how many are willing to shell out an extra $100 on the spot to do so?
@ShogunRok Thats exactly how I see it. Nobody expects breathtaking visuals from smaller, less demanding games, nor do they go to them for that sort of thing in the first place. Solid gameplay and smooth performance should be first and formost.
Get some more retail games out there, do something about those memory cards, and get a couple nice bundles out just in time for black friday. Sony pushes digital games on the Vita and yet they insist on making them so expensive. I don't care if they cut the price or bump up the storage sizes as long as they find a solution.
Heres hoping Kaz has what it takes to turn things around. Its disappointing seeing Sony where they're at knowing how things used to be. On the bright side they seem to be doing everything right with the PS4 so far and are off to a good start.
@FullbringIchigo I hear ya. Don't know about anyone else but I think I can live without a PS4 for a while if it means not paying an arm and a leg for one. I mean its not like Sony will just quite making them after the first batch.
You gotta wonder just how many pre-orders went to like-minded sellers.
I don't see why Knack can't be successful, but Sony is going to have its work cut out for it. I can see they're going the family-friendly route but unlike Nintendo they don't have that family-friendly image anymore. Thats not to say they're not but when people think of family-friendly Sony isn't the first to come to mind.
Theres still a market for platformers but new IPs have a lot of trouble finding an audience, they get ignored in favor of established franchises. They're also just not as popular anymore, probably due to oversaturation in the past and not being seen as "console quality" anymore. I think the latter is due to the simplicity of the genre and the way they're usually done.
As long as its handled the right way I don't see a reason F2P can't co-exist with the rest of the market. Games aren't cheap so having an affordable way for people to play more games without breaking the bank is certainly a good thing.
I like the idea of splitting up single-player and multiplayer modes, for online multiplayer anyway. Why should people pay for a section of a game they won't even touch? Following online-pass logic shouldn't I get a discount if I have no intention to play online?
@BuShMoNsTeR420 That won't make much of a difference, ghz hasn't been the deciding factor in a long time. Efficiency is the name of the game these days.
I doubt the power difference will matter until a few years down the road when developers have to start squeezing out as much juice as possible. Right now just having modern architecture and more than half a gig of RAM is a godsend for them.
The way they're handling the xbox is what worries me. I get they're doing the whole multimedia thing but it what we've seen looked more like just a pile of brainstormed ideas on how to make their own Microsoft box. The way they handled the DRM didn't help at all, even going so far as to point out how the family share plan would have worked just after their 180 as if to spite everyone who was against it. To top it all off recently they pitched the xbox to small businesses as a business expense.
Even if it sounds a bit unorthodox you have to give him credit for going out of his way to put himself into the shoes of an 8-year old rather than just thinking he knows what they want and running with it.
Quite a turn of evens, huh? Sega of America and Sega of Japan hated each other so you gotta wonder how much of that played a role in turning down Sony.
Its funny that they claim Sony doesn't know how to make hardware, console hardware no, but everything else they made was solid. Sony made hardware with Sega made games would have been quite the combination, and Sony did manage to impress Nintendo enough to consider a partnership. Can't be a small feat considering their reputation back then.
This time around both Sony and Mircrosoft are using AMD's APUs rather than the usual power pc or modern desktop hardware, that'll make a big difference in the amount of heat compared to current gen consoles. They shouldn't have much trouble unless they decided to use a dedicated GPU over the on-board one.
@RaymanFan2 In my experience thats more to do with having a lot of energy, not having a problems focusing. When Moore's son says he wants a game that changes every five to ten minutes I'm sure hes refering to pacing, most young kids don't have a lot of patience so anything overly repetitive loses their interest easily.
Its not something the industry needs to cater to but even a child can offer valuable feedback.
Its kinda funny that its actually the Japanese team that would come up with the western themes while someone not originally from Japan is the one who comes up with the Japanese themes, its not something you'd think about but it makes sense.
@charlesnarles I liked the smoke breaks, waiting for the game to download load in-between sections, not so much. I like your idea for collector edition goodies though but can you imagine how big a stir that would cause.
@rjejr He could just be talking within the context of the console market. The console market isn't anywhere near as indie friendly as the PC so they actually could "fundamentally alter the landscape of gaming". Not saying your wrong it could very well just be him grandstanding.
@JGMR I think that could mainly be due to budget sizes, theres a lot more middle-ground these days. Back then there wasn't much difference between, say, Square and Atlus or game A and game B than popularity but now not so much. I agree with you though and I hope the release of the PS4 means more games like Monster Rancher, Tomba, and Dark Cloud.
Probably won't use the game-sharing features much but I like that the background downloading applys to physical copies, especially if that means we'll never have to see another game end up like MGS4.
@charlesnarles Since the only way to have PS3 backwards-compatibility is through streaming and theres a lot of people who would prefer physical copies I can see the PS3 still selling. I recall either NIS or Atlus stating their sticking to the PS3 for now too so theres that, and anyone that can't/doesn't want to plop $400 down for a console has a wealth of options.
The thing with Microsoft is a lot of their big sellers are online-multiplayer oriented and most people tend to move on to the next game with those. For a lot of people their Xbox just ends up as a Halo, Forza, ect. machine at some point.
There certainly are diehard fans that will appearently die without the latest game from their favorite series or company, but for most people theres a limit to what they're willing to or can spend.
$60 is already pushing it for a lot of people, nevermind those in countries like Australia that pay even more. The scary thing here is that most people are going to see this as "just" $5 more, until the price is raised another $5 and so on and so forth.
Not supporting a platform that sells/sold millions because yours gathers dust sounds like an awesome way to make money.
I'm sure they still make solid products from but I think now a days they're more like Bose and other high-end brands that are just as much for bragging rights as anything else.
The thing is, while it does seem like a cheap way to intice people to buy a PS eye, most people who aren't interested in it probably won't care about this sort of thing anyway.
I see this more as just Sony's way of saying "bought PS eye? Well heres a little something to get you started".
@Kage_88 I agree with you, but thats why I said "lately". Theres nothing wrong with going with a sure thing, but recently they've been coming out with nothing but Mario and Donkey Kong (never though I'd complain about the latter).
I think thats the problem with their design philosophy, it makes it a lot easier to over-expose your IP when you rely on it so heavily. They use Mario as a one-size-fits-all glove for everything even when they've got several other IPs in the same genre they could use instead. Righ now they're trying to get the Wii U off the ground which is fine but afterwards they need to cool it and give Mario a rest for a while.
@rastamadeus So true, heck even the blue blur himself was inspired by Super Mario Bros. Say what you want about Nintendo but they still make some pretty solid games. I've heard people compare NSMB to getting a cheeseburger at Mcdonald's, in that its a safe, reliable, and enjoyable experience.
While I enjoy most of Nintendo's games I actually buy them for the third-party exclusives they do have. The thing with Nintendo is while they're still pretty innovative on the hardware side I think they've been playing it a bit too safe on the software side lately. Its kinda funny though, what one company lacks is the other company's strenght.
@Squiggle55
I think theres a lot of truth to that. A while back I had to explain to my cousin that DSi points still cost money, now hes a pretty bright kid but the fact that I had to explain that shows just how gullible this newer generation can be.
Why do I get the feeling that a lot of us here are going to be telling our grand kids about how back in our day games were on cartridges and disks when we're old and grey?
I get the appeal of going digital, especially since I buy most of my games on Amazon but I would much rather get a good deal on the physical copy and know my game will get here when it gets here than trade tangible goods for convenience.
Besides, its nice having an actual library of games to show off. Nothing says your a fan than having the full series proudly displayed on a shelf.
I can see it in the original version of Ellie but the final version, not so much. Seems like shes being rather nice about though which is good. Theres no telling if it was intentional on Naughty Dog's part but at least shes not lashing out at them over it.
@ViciousDS
Or maybe he just get tired of it on his own? Heck, I'm a fan of the first two and I got tired of Halo just from seeing it constantly. It all depends on the kid but its always impressive when someone at that age shows such discerning tastes.
Consumers can be pretty stupid in general but even an idiot can figure out when he feels insulted, wether or not they act on it is another matter however.
@Gamer83 I wouldn't be so sure. Microsoft left a bad taste in a lot of peoples' mouths, not just from the DRM but the way they handled the whole thing. Claiming their DRM is no big deal cause us gamers will buy it anyway, their damage control, and even sticking their nose up at the military.
I could be wrong of course but I think a lot of people see Microsoft in a whole new light, especially considering how highly regarded the military is for a lot of people.
A lower price is one thing but the damage thats already been done is a whole nother can of worms. The fact that they had the guts to do it in the first place and the way they handled things, everything from the damage control to sticking their nose up at the military, says a lot about their values as a company. The military is a huge deal for a lot of people so that alone is a huge shot in the foot.
That price difference is going to make a huge difference this holiday when people see that they can get a console and spend that left over $100 on other things. Gotta wonder how much the relatively cheaper price of the Wii U will effect things since Nintendo's big guns are due out. This could be the one generation that the weakest console doesn't win.
I wonder just how well a subsidized console would actually work, people will be attracted to the lower price but most people are also well aware of all the hassle that comes with payment plans (late fees, cancelation fees, ect.).
@acdramon Probably, I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft offered to cut them a break on used games in exchange for promoting the Xbox big time. Wouldn't be surprised if they try the same thing at Gamestop and other prominent retailers.
@Gamer83 Thats just it, I have a feeling digital distribution is the reason Sony is playing it cool with their stance on DRM. I have a feeling they're going to really push digital distribution, game streaming, and everything else. After all why make a fuss about used games when you can just lead people into going digital?
@rjejr Thats the thing with the Vita, its as much as a home console by itself. Most people just find the idea of a handheld costing the same as a home console ridiculous. Its been that way since the Gameboy.
It doesn't help that Sony mainly targets more mature audiences with their handhelds, and those that would buy one for their kids aren't going to spend $250 on a handheld.

I think that could mainly be due to budget sizes, theres a lot more middle-ground these days. Back then there wasn't much difference between, say, Square and Atlus or game A and game B than popularity but now not so much. I agree with you though and I hope the release of the PS4 means more games like Monster Rancher, Tomba, and Dark Cloud.
Re: PS4 Will Make Playing Your Digital Titles Anywhere a Lot Easier
Probably won't use the game-sharing features much but I like that the background downloading applys to physical copies, especially if that means we'll never have to see another game end up like MGS4.
Re: Sony: We're in a Much Better Position with PS4 than with PS3
@charlesnarles
Since the only way to have PS3 backwards-compatibility is through streaming and theres a lot of people who would prefer physical copies I can see the PS3 still selling.
Re: You May Need to Open Your Wallet Wider for EA's PS4 Games
There certainly are diehard fans that will appearently die without the latest game from their favorite series or company, but for most people theres a limit to what they're willing to or can spend.
$60 is already pushing it for a lot of people, nevermind those in countries like Australia that pay even more. The scary thing here is that most people are going to see this as "just" $5 more, until the price is raised another $5 and so on and so forth.
Re: Razer's Boss Cuts PS3 to Shreds, Explains Lack of Support
Not supporting a platform that sells/sold millions because yours gathers dust sounds like an awesome way to make money.
I'm sure they still make solid products from but I think now a days they're more like Bose and other high-end brands that are just as much for bragging rights as anything else.
Re: You'll Totally Get a Free Game Pre-Installed on Your PS4
The thing is, while it does seem like a cheap way to intice people to buy a PS eye, most people who aren't interested in it probably won't care about this sort of thing anyway.
I see this more as just Sony's way of saying "bought PS eye? Well heres a little something to get you started".
Re: Mark Cerny: I Hope Sony's Impact Will Match Nintendo's In Years To Come
@Kage_88
I agree with you, but thats why I said "lately".
Re: Mark Cerny: I Hope Sony's Impact Will Match Nintendo's In Years To Come
@rastamadeus
So true, heck even the blue blur himself was inspired by Super Mario Bros.
Re: Sony: Physical Games Will Be Around Longer Than People Think
@Squiggle55
Re: Ellen Page Doesn't Sound Too Pleased With The Last Of Us Likeness
I can see it in the original version of Ellie but the final version, not so much. Seems like shes being rather nice about though which is good. Theres no telling if it was intentional on Naughty Dog's part but at least shes not lashing out at them over it.
Re: Reaction: Microsoft May Have Reacted, But PS4 Is in Control
@ViciousDS
Re: Reaction: Microsoft May Have Reacted, But PS4 Is in Control
@Gamer83
I wouldn't be so sure.
Re: Analysts Believe That PS4 Is Still in the Driver's Seat
A lower price is one thing but the damage thats already been done is a whole nother can of worms. The fact that they had the guts to do it in the first place and the way they handled things, everything from the damage control to sticking their nose up at the military, says a lot about their values as a company. The military is a huge deal for a lot of people so that alone is a huge shot in the foot.
Re: Reaction: PS4 Price Advantage Will Prove Pivotal in the Battle Against Xbox One
Re: You Won't Be Able to Pre-order a PS4 from This Particular Branch of GAME
@acdramon
Probably, I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft offered to cut them a break on used games in exchange for promoting the Xbox big time. Wouldn't be surprised if they try the same thing at Gamestop and other prominent retailers.
Re: Cliff Bleszinski Reckons That Sony's Playing You for Publicity
@Gamer83
Thats just it, I have a feeling digital distribution is the reason Sony is playing it cool with their stance on DRM. I have a feeling they're going to really push digital distribution, game streaming, and everything else. After all why make a fuss about used games when you can just lead people into going digital?
Re: Reaction: There Is One Thing That Sony Could Learn from Microsoft at E3 2013
@rjejr
Thats the thing with the Vita, its as much as a home console by itself. Most people just find the idea of a handheld costing the same as a home console ridiculous. Its been that way since the Gameboy.
It doesn't help that Sony mainly targets more mature audiences with their handhelds, and those that would buy one for their kids aren't going to spend $250 on a handheld.
Re: E3 2013: Shigeru Miyamoto Enjoys a Moment with Tearaway
@rastamadeus
Theres not doub in my mind thats what he was up to, I was refering to ObviouslyAdachi's comment that he looks mad.
I'd love to have been a fly on the wall listening to the commotion when people realized Miyamoto himself was at their booth playing Tearaway.
Re: E3 2013: Shigeru Miyamoto Enjoys a Moment with Tearaway
@ObviouslyAdachi
Or maybe hes just really focused on what hes doing. He might be trying to pick it apart and decide what their up against.
I think its kinda neat that Miyamoto takes some time out of his busy schedule to check out the competition.
Re: E3 2013: Sony Rubs Salt into the Xbox One's Used Games Dilemma
Gotta love that, not only is it a good jab a Microsoft it highlights something thats been apart of gaming for decades.
