Re: DOOM: The Dark Ages (PS5) - Medieval Mashup Slows Down for FPS Excellence

Feffster

I was thinking of double dipping and buying this on Pro but the Digital Foundry coverage has persuaded me to stick with playing on Gamepass on XSX as that has the best performance on console. Performance over resolution any day of the week for me, particularly in a fast action game like this. Looking forward to getting stuck into Doom TDA next week.

Re: Halo the Final PS5 Holdout of Xbox's Historic Big Three

Feffster

Unreal engine 5 remasters being polished ready for release on all consoles for sure. Gears has now paved the way for single game releases (not collections) to maximise revenue; so a MC Collection on PS may still be some way off.

To this day, The Silent Cartographer level from the original Halo remains one of the best moments in gaming…and it won’t be long before this is on PlayStation.

Re: Massive PS Plus Clearout Announced for May, 22 Games Leaving

Feffster

No problem with a healthy turnover but why remove first party games? Seems daft and doesn’t happen on Gamepass except if a title is delisted (and with FH4 they even gave the game away if you’d bought extra content). That grumble aside, I’m still happy with the service for £10pm.

Re: Microsoft's AI Obsession Continues with Atrocious Copilot Version of Quake 2

Feffster

@JB_Whiting - that’s one way of looking at it and I respect your opinion. However, it may not be worse and change/progress doesn’t necessarily diminish what we already have. I agree individual talent, skill and intellectual property should have proper protections- but that’s not to say that AI can’t work alongside or improve upon certain processes in the future. For example - today’s world frequently has news of gaming studios closing or struggling because of the amount of man hours needed to turn out modern games on modern systems. If AI can do some of the heavy lifting in the future then that would likely save jobs in the industry as well as creating new opportunities and innovative solutions to studio’s existing challenges. All I’m saying is that there are potential upsides to this, and the “easy” first look opinion that “this is bad” or “this is rubbish” is not necessarily the only way to look at this topic.

Re: Microsoft's AI Obsession Continues with Atrocious Copilot Version of Quake 2

Feffster

@JB_Whiting - but who’s to say that in the future techniques like these won’t save energy and resources? Neither of us knows what the future holds in this regard. It’s an easy (and lazy) argument to look at this in isolation and say “it’s crap” but remember back in the day it would have been easy to scoff at the idea that man might fly, or one day fly to the moon, we simply do not know where this innovation will lead and for that reason alone I think it shouldn’t be dismissed.

Re: Microsoft's AI Obsession Continues with Atrocious Copilot Version of Quake 2

What an incredibly short sighted article. Who are we to know what the future holds in this regard or the rate at which this kind of technology will develop? Obviously the current output doesn’t represent what modern consoles can produce, but that’s not today’s objective.

Without a vision of the future there would be no future progress - you could laugh at Sinclair’s C5 back in the day but today’s modern electric vehicles are a million times more advanced, likewise 70’s graphics and game physics don’t hold a candle to those of the current generation - but it took us on a journey to where we are now.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 575

PlayStation 5Pro - completed Uncharted 5 last night, not as good as 4 but it warmed up after the halfway point. Next up R&C Rift Apart, more God of War and Wipeout Omega Collection. Also need to check out RoboCop on PS Plus.

XSX - looking forward to South of Midnight next week but until then F1 2024, AoE4, and Forza Horizon 4 (just realised that’s quite a few 4s)

Have a good one everyone.

Re: Sony Remembers the PS3 in Surprise Firmware Update

Feffster

Still plugged in and sits proudly underneath my TV. Rarely used for gaming these days but occasionally for a bit of Pixel Junk Monsters (streaming a bit inconsistent on my PS5). Still using the PS3 for pics and music - would love some of these features and playlists brought over to PS5.

Re: 10 PS5, PS4 Games Removed from PS Plus Extra, Premium Next Month

Feffster

I’m fairly new to PS Plus and have a huge backlog. It doesn’t help that I’m a slow gamer and losing what gaming reflexes I once had…

…Just wondering if there’s a fairly typical time period games tend to stay on the service?…six months, a year, longer? And do first party games (God of War, etc) tend to stay on the service longer/for good or do Sony rotate them off the service as well? Thanks.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 568

Feffster

PS5Pro - GT7, slowly starting to enjoy it after c10hrs but not as good as I was expecting. More God of War, which is weirdly much better than I was expecting 😃 & likely some Wipeout Omega Collection
Series X - itching to play Avowed on Gamepass, but for now it’s more Indy, AoE4 & Far Cry New Dawn
iPad - Kingdom Rush
PS3 - Pixeljunk Monsters Encore

Re: Xbox Boss Wants to Beat PS6 on Hardware Capabilities, Not Necessarily Games

Feffster

@Papa_Emeritus - I agree, it’s been the biggest surprise for me since getting a Pro in November, never thought I’d prefer a PlayStation controller but I do now.

I hope Microsoft stay in the hardware business- they’re never going to outsell PlayStation but fanboys (on both sides) need to recognise that competition & choice are always a good thing. Plus Microsoft Rewards are insane - I get GamePass Ultimate for £45 a year, which is embarrassingly good value when you consider what you get for that.

Re: Alan Wake 2's Latest Update Tackles PS5 Pro Problems, Includes Toggle for PSSR

Feffster

I’m generally happy with my Pro & all for choice if it gives people sensible options, but this is starting to get a bit stupid now.

We’ve gone from Performance, Fidelity (and occasionally Balanced) modes to Performance PSSR, Performance no PSSR, Fidelity PSSR, Fidelity no PSSR, Balanced PSSR and Balanced no PSSR - and that’s before you start looking at options for 120hz or VRR.

Who wants to have to watch a DF video before booting up every game? That’s where we’re headed.

Re: Talking Point: What Are Your PS1 Memories?

Feffster

The Sega Saturn version of Wipeout convinced me that it was time to get a PlayStation. Spent plenty of hours with that game, Gran Turismo and fond memories of Spyro.

But my most vivid memory is the (much later) arrival of a mod-chip and standing over my precious PlayStation holding a soldering iron in total fear…Do I REALLY want to do this?…

Re: Talking Point: What Do You Think of the PS5 Pro, Three Weeks Later?

Feffster

Very happy so far. I’m coming at this from a different angle to most - I’m not upgrading as my last PlayStation was a PS3.

I sat out the PS4/Xbox One era so pretty much everything looks sublime to me on my Series X and now PS5 Pro. I’m using a Sony OLED 120hz, vrr Tv.

I began gaming all the way back to Pong and the original Atari systems - it is phenomenal how gaming has developed and what worlds and experiences these modern systems are capable of.

Roll on PS6 and the NextBox.
