The Last of Us Remastered includes the option to toggle between 30 frames-per-second and 60 frames-per-second, with developer Naughty Dog citing personal preference as the reason for the choice. However, it seems that switching between the two modes will also have an impact on visual quality, as when running at 30FPS, the title will boast better shadows.
This difference has now been proven courtesy of a comparison by NeoGAF user MrPink93485, which we’ve embedded in the space below. We suppose that it’s natural that there should be some compromise when adopting the more hardware intensive 60FPS option, but this now provides a dilemma: which framerate are you going to choose? Downgrade for an upgrade!
60fps are better for MP games but 30fps are just fine for single player story mode. Anyway why is this supposedly super computer (Sonys words) struggling to get the full 60fps on the PS4 when TLOU was a last gen game. I love my PS4 but its nowhere near as powerfull as they'd have us believe. I guess time will tell but I can't see it lasting as long a the PS3 and 360 have imo
Dont care i have it on ps3 so i aint buyin it again unless its discounted like cod n ac:bf were
@WARDIE Of course the PS4 isn't all THAT powerful. But for a dedicated gaming device it is. It surely won't last as long as PS3 did though. Mainly because of the exponential advances in computer chip technology. Easily said: Technology develops faster and faster, thus the PS4 will age faster than the PS3 did. It's only natural. But it's an argument you cannot win, if you want high end graphics you need a PC but you will miss out on many many exclusives only available on consoles and it's more costly and usually you'll have to fiddle with your settings and drivers whereas on your console you just switch it on.
All things to consider.
I abandoned PC gaming a few years ago.
@WARDIE Well, this is constantly the debate, isn't it? There will always be sacrifices when you bump things up to 60FPS — you'll always be able to do more with 30FPS. That's true irrespective of the hardware.
Why whine about it? You're all getting a choice in the game. You get to play on the most powerful console currently available. The game can't run anymore awesome on anyother console. This game scares the other brand name compatition and brings out trollers hardcore. Getting games on the PS4 is a good thing. Especially a highly praised one like this.
To be fair to @WARDIE I can see his point. Wasn't it just a few days ago Naughty Dog were saying that they'd be aiming for 1080p at 60fps? Maybe they should just have clarified it with aiming for 1080p at 60fps but just not as good looking as 1080p @ 30fps.
@voodoo341 I think the devs gave the option for 30fps has nothing to do with perf.. but when they did they decided to had more of the unused power (from 60fps to 30 yea there would be an unused waste) for that option instead of doing nothing more.
to sum up they gave more but they get flak for it
ive been playing in 60 so far and loving it ! i'll try 30 fps 2nite and see what happens
How much of a difference does it make in a game between 30 and 60. Ive tried to watch some comparison videos online but I just cant tell. Maybe my computer sucks to much to see the difference.
The choice is going to drive me crazy. I can see myself switching back and forth trying to decide wich I like better.
Believe it or not shadow quality has a significant affect on a game's performance, but isn't as important as other draining graphic settings like anti-aliasing. So it's no surprise seeing the shadow quality taking a hit at 60fps, whether it's on console or PC (depending on the PC).
Once you go 60 you can't go back. Infamous second son ran between 30 and 50fps and whenever you lock it at 30fps you will notice it instantly. Moving the camera feels horrible and graphics loose that smooth look that they had before. Anyone who thinks a game running at 30fps instead of 60fps can have better gameplay is crazy. Developers focus on 30fps on consoles just so they can make it look better even though most 30fps games on my ps4 are not impressive at all. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a perfect example of that. It looks so bad on ps4 running at 1080p 30fps. How this game doesn't run at least 60fps the world may never know. It looks like a ps2 game in 1080p and while there's nothing wrong with having a classic style in graphics like indie games, this is supposed to be a triple a title... now that's the end of my rant because I bought the worse spider-man game ever digitally on my ps4 and now I'm stuck with my bad decision for life.
UPDATE:
Naughty Dog didn’t lower the shadows’ quality at 60 frames per second to improve frame rate. The doubled shadow map resolution from the PS3 version promised a couple weeks ago is still there.
@WARDIE TLOU on PS3 was a last gen game. On PS4 it's current gen. It's completely rebuilt from the ground up, rather than being a glorified skin mod.
Personally I'll go for 60 I think, as the smooth gameplay is just heaven. Movies are meant to be cinematic, games should be....uhr....gamimatic...?
Softer shadows look bad? Look around you in real life; soft or sharp? I chose 60@1080 duh
This sin't a sacrifice made for the sake of 60FPS. It's an upgrade made because not all the cycles were working hard when you set the game to 30FPS.
It was a feature included when they decided to do the 30FPS lock, not a feature omitted when they decided to aim for 60 (and let it be said that they've always said 'aims for' and not 'holds' 60)
I'm so excited for pc gamers! I can't wait for them to enjoy this game along with destiny........oh wait.
😂
