@Gemuarto XIII-2 is still the second best selling PS3 game in Japan (the first being XIII) so they don't hate it that much, divisive yes, hate no. When you have a fanbase as large and as passionate as FF then of course you are always going to get people who strongly dislike any game. I think reactions in Japan have been pretty normal for a new game. I mean every game since X has basically been like this. X-2 was pretty divisive, so was was XI, the first MMO. XII was especially bad. The difference between Japan and West is that the media perception in Japan is very positive while not so much here. I attribute that partly to SE's terrible PR department overseas (seriously, start bribing people already).
Glad to see quite a few people enjoying XIII and XIII-2's story. I also think they are great. I had a change of heart regarding Hope whom I didn't like at first. Snow however, still annoys me even after 150+hrs spent on these games. @belmont No you are not the only one that likes the games. If you go over to novacrystallis (basically a dedicated FF news site), people have been going nuts over Lightning Returns over the last months.
@ShogunRok I wouldn't hold my breathe that FFXV will be your cup-of-tea. I think it's more of a changing of taste/expectations in gaming. FFVII's story would be bashed today as well. I also think there is a bit of cultural barrier. The contrast between Western/Eastern styles has never been more apparent than this Gen. Before the PS2 era most of the well known games (especially RPGs) were made by Japan so it's not like gamers really had a choice.
I must have watched this like 50 times. Surprised pushsquare upload it, since there were several trailers in the past month or so that wasn't. The only thing I am bummed about at this point is that the release date for the west is several months after Japan.
Yet, Smurfs 2 is till on top (maybe second) on the sales chart in UK... Clearly the people that are buying it are not the people that cares about reviews.
@odd69 The ps3 IS a great system and IT IS profitable for Sony. However because of its struggles after launch and the success of ps2, people sometimes sometimes think otherwise.
@8vpiper What a fan! Although I do think Sony's products are well made, I feel they are weak on the product support side. Meaning I want my devices to continue to evolve in functionality after I purchase them. For the premium that Sony charges for their product I expect this to be true. The two examples that I have on the top of my head is Sony Vaio and Xperia Play. Even the PSP and PS3, I feel Sony was way to slow to implement features for their firmware. Pretty much all firmware updates for the psp were about preventing hacking. The ps3 was later than Xbox on many features (like trophy support and better psn store).
I don't see it happening. The loss Sony would take just makes no sense. $600 for both I could see, not $500. Plus, any time an anonymous source is involved, I am a little weary.
@Gamer83 Say a movie studio spends $10 million making a movie, if the movie is really successful they might make $50 million (not bad, but not really the kind of revenue big movie studios are looking for). However, if they put $200 million into a movie, say, The Avengers, they can expect to make about $1 billion ($1.5 billion for The Avengers). The same thing is happening here. You can't make big money without investing BIG. Yes, you can argue, why don't SE invest $10 million instead of $200 million and guarantee a profit. It's simple, Square Enix has repeatedly stated that they aim to be an International Triple A publisher. The kind of spending done on Tomb Raider is currently the industry standard when it comes to developing Triple A games. If you treat Tomb Raider as a Triple A game then there is no reason not to expect it to sell well over 3 million copies, so I think SE's expectation is fair. Besides SE didn't say they didn't make a profit with Tomb Raider. they said it under performed. Which would be like the movie John Carter, considered to be a big flop, making $280 million on $250 million budget. In any case, remember SE is still really young as an international Publisher. Heck, FF VII was localized and published by Sony outside of Japan. Even in the PS2 days, some of their own games were published by Ubisoft (not FF of course) outside of Japan. My view is that no company gets it right on their first try (Hitman Absolution and Tomb Raider are the first games that SE really tried hard to promote that's not developed by SE Japan). You probably don't care much for SE's games, so it doesn't matter to you if they fail, but I still love their games and really hope they succeed.
@Gamer83 SE has problems but it's not with FF. FFXIII and XIII-2 have sold 10+ million copies worldwide. If you are talking about FFXIV (the first version), then yes, SE took heavy losses on that one, but it didn't contribute to their losses this financial year (it was released in 2010). SE put in more money developing Tomb Raider than any FF. At the peak of FFXIII's development there were only around 200 employees working on it, while western triple A games can have up to 1000 people working on it (COD, Assassin's Creed etc). Tomb Raider was SE's triple A title to compete with those franchises. People like to rag on SE for saying Tomb Raider didn't perform well when it sold like 3 million copies, but the sales # alone do not make a successful game. It's about the revenue vs. cost ratio, and SE clearly bet the bank on Tomb Raider. IMO, SE still makes quality games: Hitman Absolution, Tomb Raider were great, Theif and Murdered Soul Suspect looks promising as well. The problem is that their sales/marketing division, and things like retail and media relations are sorely lacking compared to companies like EA, 2K, Ubisoft. In today's competitive environment, you need more than just a good product to make money. I hope Square Enix Europe and America catches up fast, otherwise, they can spend twice as much as other companies and it still would matter.
Never use to love platform games, but in the past year or so I have really learned to enjoy them (thanks to Nintendo). Now I can't get enough of them. Will definitely get this one.
PS4 just continues to impress. I will admit I was worried when I found out that the PS4 was smaller than the Xbox and didn't include a external power brick. I thought they must have sacrificed something (like ventilation) to make all that possible. As it stands now the PS4 beats Xbox in every department: Way better looking, no overheating issues, and more powerful.
I, for one, am glad of all the HD Collections this Gen. I never owned a PS2, so I got to play many of the classic games for the first time this Gen (God of War, MGS 2+3 and soon FFX, X-2, and Kingdom Hearts). I know for the people who played these during the PS2 era, it may seem like the developers are cash grabbing, but for people that didn't own a PS2, this was the best thing ever.
