Re: Jim Ryan Says Players Only Remember the Best Games

Wormwood23

Ryan is engaging in a terribly reductive, incredibly naive (from a development standpoint) logical fallacy here, ad populum. He is essentially saying that popularity validates quality, and although there is sometimes a correlation between the two, it is not my experience that the two always go hand-in-hand, or that the former directly proves the latter. The easy response here is to come at it from the opposite end of the question, and ask whether (or rather how many) great games have not risen to mass popularity, and why. Then perhaps we could begin to examine what creates not just popularity, but how designers and developers can create more of those moments of physical gameplay that release endorphins, and narratives that resonate with meaning. Legendary games.

Ryan may be full of himself and various other stuffings, but the question about the relationship between the two is worth asking, I think.

Re: Talking Point: Did Sony Lie About PS5?

Wormwood23

The problem with this article is that at no point did Sony actually promise what you claim they promised. Read those quotes again: where in them precisely did Jim Ryan or any Sony employee ever say that new games would only be released for the PS5 after that console was unveiled? I certainly cannot find that promise anywhere in those quotes or any other Sony document. There are posters here claiming that Spider-Man: MM was sold as a PS5 exclusive, and that just is not accurate.

You don't get to invent promises that were never made and then get your panties twisted when it doesn't happen.

On edit: I would love to know how many of the super-upset posters here claiming Sony "lied" either massively overpaid for their PS5, had to engage in a major effort to purchase one, or both. My guess is that there would be a strong correlation between them.

@LordSteev: Saunders never once said he was focusing on diversity more than talent, not once; you're putting words in his mouth. He said they were leveraging their team's diversity to deliver the highest-quality game that appeals to the greatest number of people, which is not even close to what you described.

You seem easily upset about these issues. Perhaps reading a bit more carefully and a bit less emotionally might help.

Re: Amnesia: Rebirth - The SOMA Team Has Its First Dud

Wormwood23

I've read many reviews calling this game mediocre, which is sad.

The Outlast games really set a new standard for survival horror: the first one, and the Whistleblower DLC, were the only games since SH2 that got to me. Frictional really needs to expand their gameplay options and character/monster types if they wanna still be held in high horror regard. SOMA had a solid story but the gameplay was just not anything special, at all.

Re: Mini Review: The Walking Dead Onslaught - One for the Undead Fans

Saints & Sinners is top notch VR gaming but the advanced reviews for this one looked sketchy, which is interesting considering that the first doesn't use any characters from the shows or comics.

I'm glad I went with the "Until You Fall" first-day purchase this morning instead of with this game: UYF is amazing and deserves a review here.
