I'd say Fatal Frame 2 was pretty spooky. It gave you those Resident Evil style camera angles (Wii remake is 3rd person, but I think it made the game less scary), plus a slow moving character with enemies that can pass through walls. Then, you have to actually look at the spooky stuff to progress, using a first person camera.
I though Bioshock 1 & 2 were great, as was Minerva's Den. Infinite, I found quite over-rated however. Rapture was far more interesting a location for me than Columbia, so I'm really looking forward to seeing a new take on the city.
@eliotgballade Yep - I played Shenmue 1 and 2 for hours beyond the main story, with all its retro SEGA collectables and distractions. It was ahead of its time, the world may have been small compared to the modern sandbox, but there was a lot of variety to explore and discover, great game. Now, where is Shenmue 3 SEGA?
I've not got GTA5 yet, not sure I'm interested enough in that particular game but... I did enjoy the previous generation GTA games, although I never finished any of them as just messing around, listening to music while driving, flying and so on, also made me forget what I was supposed to be doing overall. I think I only played missions to unlock the map!
This is one reason I’m disappointed with no custom soundtracks in the new game.
I was a big fan of Shenmue and played both games to their conclusion (still want to know what happens next, I guess we'll never know...), I appreciated the effort SEGA put in to collecting items and playing mini games that you could progress with to discover new things (such as the duck racing in Shenmue 2), even to the point of getting games for Ryo's Saturn (though, how did he get that console in 1986!?).
Just heard there are no custom soundtracks in the game. I realise the option was not in GTA 4, but the original Xbox games had the option, so why not now. The most time wasting fun I had with the old games, was driving or flying about the massive open world listening to my own tunes...
Being a SEGA rather that Nintendo owner back in the 80s and 90s, I'd never played the NES version and only recently the Gameboy. I got this though and it was a fun game, not quite up to QuackShot in my opinion though.
I’ve already pre-ordered Castle of Illusion so hoping that will be good, plus it has the cool bonus of the Megadrive version as a download.
Also, you do get the 8-bit music, though the review says otherwise, its in the options once you complete the game?
While it all looks really impressive, I miss GTA set in the 80s... Will they ever go back to Vice City, HD mullets and characters with massive phones would be cool.
Up to the Dreamcast, I was a SEGA fan all the way since the Master System (I think this was before the word 'fanboy', but I suppose I kind of was one), I have to admit I sort of resented the success of PS2 at the time as I could see SEGA losing it in the hardware business.
I wonder what may have happened if they had teamed up pre-Saturn, but then again, they Saturn was a great console for 2D games and importing, while the Playstation also had great games and shook up the industry and games as pop culture in a whole new way. In retrospect I see how cool both consoles were, so I suppose we may have missed out of something with the SEGA Sony Saturn.
I'm glad of the continuing PS3 support, I cant really afford a new console at the moment, and I think Nintendo made a mistake dropping the Wii so fast.
Graphics look good, but I'll wait for reviews. I found '4' had really lost something from '3' and its spin offs. To me, it seemed the 'satirical' elements had dropped off somewhat...
Nice Daytona reference I still play that game on PS3 even now, beats the Saturn and Dreamcast versions.
Never been the biggest fan of Gran Turismo's realistic approach myself, I remember finding the scope of the original game very impressive, but the driving itself, not so much my thing.
Favourite driving game of recent years was probably Grid, going to get the demo for this and see what I think though, as not played Gran Turismo since the 2nd one on original Playstation.
Weirdly, I never think of calling the phone numbers I might see in video games, except in the Silent Hill Shattered Memories on the Wii, where you could dial them in game as part of the gameplay, that was a pretty neat feature.
While this is cool, its a shame they are the 50Hz versions, I downloaded Castlevania and while I can zoom the screen to lose the boarders, the gameplay is still slower. For a £4 version though, I can get used to it.
Perhaps the issue is developing more sustainable ways of creating games, rather than restricting people from owning their personal property, that they have worked and earned money to buy.
If Xbox restrictions were across the board, I wouldn’t be buying any of these new consoles, so that would be one less person spending money on games anyway.
As a gamer since the Atari 2600, I find the Xbox one's restrictions an awful proposition, and I don’t accept this 'big budget' excuse to justify what they are trying to do.
No, I would not buy a console or game with these restrictive DRM issues. If PS4 is the same as Xbox, then its the point at which I stop buying video games consoles, and I'd started with the Atari 2600...
I wont buy any system that requires a fee to pay used games, so no Xbox purchase here, PS4 wait and see approach in the long run. I'm mainly a retro gamer and only just got to the PS3, so I am aware I may not be representative!
I think people also sometimes tend to forget the selling of used games creates jobs and profits, just not in such a centralised way. Its also good for recycling those mountains of discs out there and creating interest in the industry, as more people get to play more games...
As I just got a PS3 at Christmas, sounds good to me. Nintendo dropping Wii support so fast was disappointing, as I’m in no rush to buy ‘next gen’ consoles.
I remember renting Flashback 'back then' for the Megadrive, and at the time the atmosphere created by those sparse, but oh so well animated graphics, was really quite impressive.
I now own the cart, as collecting Megadrive games years later is somewhat cheaper than it was at the time...
Be interested to see how much the core gameplay has changed, and what this remake brings to the game.
I like this 80s throw back approach, had a lot of fun playing Double Dragon Neon. I dont really play fps games much, but will see how this turns out, gameplay-wise.
@shinobi88 I played the 8-bit before the 16-bit version and it is also great, may even have the edge...
Was one of my first Master System games, which is the same as the Game Gear version. Can also be played on the megadrive using the powerbase converter, so thats how I play it. My Game Gear screen is wrecked, so not so good playing on the original hardward anymore, sadly...
A 'bog-standard' Virtua Fighter 2 was also good enough for me, I was limited to the Saturn version in the 90s, so the PSN release was an easy buy.
Castle of Illusion is a true classic game, I still play it on my Megadrive and be nice on PSN with the save state added so could interrupt play. Hope they bring Quack Shot too, I often used to end up switching that off before I got to the end...
I played the first two on the Xbox and the remake of the 2nd on the Wii. Hope they all come to Europe PSN, so I can finally get to play the third game (I never had a PS2).
I did have moments in Uncharted where I thought, 'not another battle...'. Having said that, the whole game had that over the top 80s action movie vibe to me, so it kind of got away with it, and I enjoyed the game.
The new Tomb Raider is not what I was hoping for, I've played the series since the first game on the Saturn, but find this new 'realistic' character / combat focus unappealing, and without the charm of Crystal Dynamics previous games which drew more upon the platform / puzzle elements.
Tried the trial and then got the full game, I played the arcade original back in the 80s, and have a lot of nostalgia for games like Streets of Rage. So far, I've found this game a lot of fun, a nice alternative to Double Dragon Advance.

@Philson Ha ha, nice observation!
Hmm, but I had a Saturn, Dreamcast, Gamecube, Xbox. Could go earlier and start with the Atari 2600...

There is a PS2 sale as well, some titles at £3.99 and Okami HD is half price!
