Re: AMD Hypes Up PS6 Collaboration, FSR 4 Upscaling Tech

Porco

none of this stuff makes gaming better. don't know how people can still be interested in bs marketing points about graphics when the gaming industry has been suffering as much as it has and is close to falling off a cliff. people should be clamoring for better gaming experiences and that might actually mean taking a step back and focusing more on what used to make games innovative, fun and memorable. halt the graphics arms race. look where its gotten us with the ps5 (worst console gen in playstation's history).

Re: Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars (PS5) - Timeless JRPGs Ride Again

Porco

@Foxhound the inventory management is quite terrible in lunar sssc due to the limited item slots available to each character. you will constantly be re-shuffling items around in a very unintuitive way which really does hurt the experience. the unbalanced and excessive grinding requirements of the game (unless they addressed these issues in the remaster of course) don't help either. good game otherwise but i'd consider giving it a 7 for the reasons mentioned.

Re: PS Portal Keeps on Defying Odds, UK Makes It a Best-Seller

Porco

a device sells a few hundred thousand units worldwide and its declared a big success and game changing? haha. nobody actually believes that other than the few people who own one. not sure what the purpose of this article is because its not changing the perception of this very limited device to anyone who actually knows what it is and for good reason — it sucks.

Re: PS Plus Essential PS5, PS4 Games for March 2025 Announced

Porco

it sold extremely poorly.. far worse than even the most cynical predictions... we're talking about 1.5m total copies. ea's sales expectations were only 3m and it couldn't even manage that. this is a disaster of epic proportions. if this studio manages to keep the doors open and release another game, i'll be shocked. clearly, ea is having a hard time giving this game away for FREE

Re: Evidence Mounts for Seemingly Inevitable Persona 4 Remake on PS5

Porco

@arsmolinarc with that way of thinking, they will never tackle persona 1/2 then... even though persona 2 in particular was tied with persona 3 for most deserving of a remake by the fans in a recent atlus questionaire (close to 80% or respondents voted for p3/p2). p2 should be next in line based on this data, otherwise why do they even bother?

Re: Yakuza Creator's Next Game Will Be Sent to Die As NetEase Implodes

Porco

i commented about this happening when news broke about nagoshi leaving sega and partnering with netease a while back now... and what a grave mistake it was. writing was on the wall, wasn't it? can't say i flinched at this news but its sad nontheless. i'm more concerned about grasshopper being shut down completely... was there no other way for them to pivot or was it merely one final act of desperation to find funding when nobody else would oblige? grasshopper has been around a long time so you would expect another japanese publisher to step up...

Re: Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii (PS5) - Madcap Majima Does the Job

Porco

the beginning of the end for the yakuza franchise? well, it wouldn't be unexpected with over 20 releases, including the spinoffs, not to mention brain drain at the studio in recent years. i think many fans liked the balance of serious drama and slapstick comic relief of the earlier titles... perhaps the new team is losing the "essence" of what this franchise was all about.

Re: Ex-Sony Exec Says PC Ports of Old PS5 Games Are Almost Like Printing Money

Porco

@EfYI unfortunately that strategy won't work because steam users will review bomb the game to oblivion as we have already seen with the PSN account fiasco. piracy is here to stay and won't be going anywhere unless you are a publisher willing to be hated and boycotted in that space. you have to understand that the pc community has a great sense of "entitlement". now, if you are rockstar/take2, you can absolutely pack 10 DRM measures into gta 6 and get away with it but that's an exception.

Re: Ex-Sony Exec Says PC Ports of Old PS5 Games Are Almost Like Printing Money

Porco

@Molsenalan generally speaking, the sales of PC ports are a drop in the bucket compared to console releases. we're talking anywhere from 5-20% of total sales being attributed to PC. god of war (2018) sold 20m copies on ps4 and just 3m on pc... people tend to grossly exaggerate the impact PC sales have. case and point, this article headline is bogus. i doubt spiderman 2 even cracked 500k sales on PC thus far.

Re: Sony Japan Studio Closed Because AA Market 'Disappeared', Says Shu Yoshida

Porco

@Lowdefal seeing that sony was funding all these projects, shouldn't there have been more oversight and understanding as to how japan studio should pivot if their games weren't selling? why were so many projects being greenlit that had no chance of succeeding according to their metrics? by the looks of things, it isn't japan studio that failed sony, it is sony that failed japan studio.

it is the job of the publisher to figure out the markets and determine what works at the end of the day. otherwise, it would be akin to sony encouraging one of its studios to create a product that is not desireable... and after repeated attempts at not reaching a demographic (that barely exists), sony was left with no other choice but to close the studio. that's a paradox if i've ever seen one. i believe jim ryan's warped, US centric bias also had a lot to do with this.

the solution to this would be to simply reduce the budget and scale of the teams at japan studio, thus lowering the margins required to be profitable and successful and/or focusing on concepts that might have wider appeal and be less niche by their nature. sony did neither. closing down the studio was mismanagement on top of mismanagement.

Re: Sony Japan Studio Closed Because AA Market 'Disappeared', Says Shu Yoshida

Porco

a bit of nonsense all these yoshida takes. does anyone actually believe that gamers were disappointed by the budget of gravity rush 2 and that is why it didn't sell well? how many people are even able to tell the difference between AA and AAA? with good art direction and polished mechanics, that line can be blurred rather well. it was a great game, but it was a bit niche and there was a lack of marketing in the west just like the first game. this has nothing to do with its budget and trying to justify the closure of japan studio like this is really sad.

Re: Reaction: The PS5 Discourse Around State of Plays Is Becoming Draining

Porco

@Rabid_Gamer interestingly enough, chinese and korean devs are giving many western devs a run for their money in the AAA space and have received plenty of coverage from various sony events including the most recent state of play. i don't think anyone expected this before the ps5 gen began. Lost Soul Aside, Stellar Blade, Phantom Blade Zero, Black Myth: Wukong, Tides of Annhilation... also Lies of P... all developed by chinese/korean devs.

Re: Reaction: The PS5 Discourse Around State of Plays Is Becoming Draining

Porco

sony made numerous bad decisions this generation and the negativity online is generally worse because of it. that's how it goes... these aren't exactly optimisitc times we live in, so people are going to vent their frustrations, sometimes more fiercely than usual. been a playstation fan since 1995 and i can't say there is a single thing they have done right over the past 4 years, despite the better than expected sales of the ps5. the sales absolutely do not reflect the console on its own merits. they are getting away with it due to the ps5 being the winner by default and having beat xbox so badly with the ps4... a lack of comeptition doesn't make this "victory" satisfying as this is the worst console sony has ever released. of course, the AAA space on the whole is also in dissaray so the impact isn't entirely on sony alone.

Re: Ex-PlayStation Boss Says Sony 'Can't Get Away' with a PS6 That Has No Disc Drive

Porco

fairly likely that ps6 will launch with no disc drive in the box and only offer an optional one (which will be severly supply limited intentionally). in addition, it is very likely that most AAA publishers will simply NOT release a physical version of their games anyways... physical releases will be tied to collector's editions aimed at the FOMO audiences with too much money at their disposal to even question their purchases. by the end of the ps6 gen, physical releases will likely be close to dead. its an economies of scale thing — it will get to a point where sony decides its not even worth the investment to keep the factories open to press the discs anymore). i can see a world where collector's editions eventually consist of empty game cases (wtih download codes inside, plus a few additional stickers for safe measure haha) to please those who are still in mourning. its a shame that the industry has gone in this direction, but better to accept it then to be in denial. plus, there is only so much shelf space available to those will moderate or smaller homes (most of us).

Re: Poll: What Did You Think of Sony's State of Play for February 2025?

Porco

when you have lowered your expectations as much as i have over the years, you are able to walk away from these state of plays with a feeling that is "passable". there were some genuine surprises here such as tides of annihilation and shinobi gameplay (from the same devs as streets of rage 4, sign me up). onimusha 2 and lost souls aside gameplay looked quite good and elevated the show. these kinds of announcements are enough to make these shows watchable. anticipating new, sweeping 1st party IP from sony is a setup for disappointment so its best to move on from that way of thinking. sony only has a handful of single player games on the horizon... i count no more than 4 or 5 at most for the remainder of the ps5 gen. one or two releases per year if we are lucky... they will be saved for game awards and other prominant shows and not wasted on a state of play.

Re: PlatinumGames Seemingly Spills More Top Bayonetta, Astral Chain Talent

Porco

platinum games simply isn't platinum games any longer. ninja gaiden looks a bit lackluster to be hoenst and for good reason. a nier sequel looks more and more unlikely with each passing day... and even if it was in production, is that what we even want knowing that the usual talent wasn't involved? maybe s-e will keep that in-house if it ever sees the light of day.

Re: $100 for GTA 6 Is 'A Bridge Too Far' Even for Rockstar, Says Analyst

Porco

@Dalamar a bit of a strange take. that's similar to asking why mario kart 8 sold over 70m copies. it's a great game, but it didn't do anything particularly "new". its been the same formula for 30 years now over at nintendo.

you could easily argue that the gta series provides the best open world, sandbox environment of any other series, period. they usually add one new mechanic that is the first of its kind, as well. in gta v, you could switch between 3 characters on the fly, in real time, regardless of where each character was on the map — can't say i have ever seen that in an open world game before or since. gta vi will bring something new to the table, i am sure of it. if nothing else, it will be the most amitious open world game ever made, so that counts for something, right?

why does cod sell as much as it does? or why does fortnite attract such a large audience? some things just take hold of the social conciousness at large. gta is one such franchise. some people get it. others don't. and that's fine. almost anything in this world that generates that level of hype will probably fail to live up to it, but that is for everyone to decide for themselves.

Re: In the US, PS5 Is Selling Much Faster Than PS4 At a Higher Price

Porco

@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare interesting writeup. thanks for sharing. according to your sources, it appears that the ps4 was at 90m units sold as of january 2019, which is about 5 years after the launch of the ps4 (launched in november of 2013).

ps5 currently sits at 65m units sold after 4 years on the market. unless the ps5 sells an additional 25m units before november of 2025, then the ps5 is absolutely NOT outpacing the ps4.

if gta VI releases this year, there is a good possibility that the ps5 will match the ps4 in sales as it will get a massive boost. without gta VI, i don't think the ps5 has a chance at selling an additional 25m units in less than 10 months from now. total lifetime sales should be interesting to see, but as we all know, sales aren't everything. even if ps5 outsells the ps4, that doesn't mean it was the better console. far from it.

Re: Capcom Seems Sold on Using AI to Help Out with Game Development

Porco

@Oram77 hypothetically, it would destroy the creative arts as we know it. there would be a severe restriction in the number of professionals able to break into the creative fields as jobs would be so limited. in an industry that is already ultra competitive, it would be controlled by even fewer people, which in turn would restrict ideas and result in stagnation and homogeny. it would also significantly increase the output of trash and brain-rot creation and consumption since the majority if the AI generated media (with little to no human element applied) would result in a soulless and sterile product, without meaning or purpose. a plethora of it; much more than you can even imagine since it will be created so quickly and with so little consequence. if you think moderation is bad on psn or the eshop, you have seen nothing yet.

ultimately, we are talking about everyday, hard working people, being pushed into a corner and having a tougher time of it. this might affect me, you, our friends, colleagues, family members or anyone else in between. why wish for something that has the potential to disrupt the very things that define us as human? make no mistake, AI is designed to primarily benefit the corpos and their agendas like with most things in the capitalist world which are driven by money and greed. this is going to be a weaponization of thoughts, ideas and narratives. what happens in the gaming industry is only the tip of the iceberg.

Re: Capcom Seems Sold on Using AI to Help Out with Game Development

Porco

they sure like to use the word "help" a lot, when describing their intentions of using AI. sure, at first AI will "help" ease the burden and lighten the load. but over time, AI will outright replace millions of jobs around the world. it will get to the point where a AAA game is developed by 12 people with the assistance of AI. so no, i do not support the use of AI in any capacity, because i can see what the end game is. don't give this tech an inch. you will be sorry. why people continue to embrace a monster that will be detrimental to their lives and well being is beyond me.

Re: Ninja Gaiden 4 Announced, Slashes to PS5 This Year with PlatinumGames Co-Developing

Porco

certainly a surprise, but why does this look like a budget game and not the big blockbuster that it deserved to be? environments look bland and barren. this doesn't seem like the type of game that should have been outsourced to platinum in my opinion and deserved the time and care of a proper AAA release. looks fine and all, but not mindblowing like some people are making it out to be. funny enough, at the moment, i'm looking forward to seeing more of ninja gaiden ragebound over this one.

Re: Dragon Age: The Veilguard Support Could Be Over Already as Patch 5 Drops on PS5

Porco

bioware is being kept on life support for the moment so that EA doesn't have another PR disaster on its hands. its one of the last "good will" studios it has left. the latest DA is a financial disaster for EA without question and perhaps its not even EA's fault this time? a sales expectation of a paltry 3m should have been met which tells me that the market voted and this franchise has simply run its course. should EA go all in on sports games, bioware will likely become a support studio.

Re: The Legend of Dragoon Just Got an Unexpected Patch on PS5, PS4

Porco

@Nakatomi_Uk yea, so long as said game gets re-introduced by sony and is available for purchase on psn for ps4/ps5, then it should be free for you to download again.

there are a number of capcom ps1 games that were only available via premium ps+ subscribtion for ps4/ps5 (could not be purchased seperately) and in those cases, the game will not be available to you on ps4/ps5. i think dino crisis is available, though... if you owned the ps3 version.

Re: The Legend of Dragoon Just Got an Unexpected Patch on PS5

Porco

@wiiware yea, the carryover of ps1 classics from psp/vita/ps3 is still in effect for ps4/ps5 which is nice. i was surprised to see my 13 year old purchase of grandia available on ps4. but unfortunately, only a fraction of the ps classics library has made its way to ps4/ps5 and i don't expect that to change much.

that said, i recommend that you try ps1 games on ps3. especially if you have a modded ps3, it will run the entire ps1 library in .bin/.cue format with perfect emulation. the upscaling is sharp. no bells and whistles such as rewind or save states of course, but that's a small convenience to lose when you have the entire ps1 game library at your disposal. currently playing though lunar and couldn't be happier with the experience

Re: The Legend of Dragoon Just Got an Unexpected Patch on PS5

Porco

this is absoultely pathetic. a 25 year old ps1 game is struggling to be emulated properly on current gen platforms. why is this happening??? why does a ps1 rom require patches in the first place? if you can't add ehancements to the game, then don't. FREE community driven ps1 emulators do a far better job than sony, and yet people are still crying for more ps1 classics on ps5, despite knowing that they will perform worse than the ps1 original or the myriads of emulation options available on their pc's or legacy ps hardware? what's the annual budget of the emulation team at sony? 100 bucks?

at this point, don't even bother. ps1 emulation was pitch perfect on the ps2, ps3, psp and vita and yet here we are in 2025 and they can't get ps1 games to run properly on significantly more powerful hardware. just wow.

Re: Celeste Developer Cancels New Game Earthblade

Porco

as a big fan of celeste, this is sad news. this statement doesn't make sense, though:

"Due to the expectations placed on the developer's shoulders as a result of Celeste, the project became "exhausting" to work on."

you cannot run away from the success of celeste. no matter what you work on next, there will be high expectations. so to use that as a scape goat and then say that they will be working on smaller-scale projects does not solve the "celeste problem" going forward, be it 5 years from now or 15 years from now when their next game releases, under a new studio name or not. but hey, they are allowed to keep the real reason private, of course.

money. greed. ego. strike again.

Re: Poll: How Would You Have Reacted to a Live Service God of War Announcement?

Porco

been with god of war franchise since day one and it wouldn't be a stretch to call it one of my all time favourites. after completing 6 of the 8 entries (still have not played ascension or ragnarok yet), i think it is time to retire the franchise. or at the very least, take a long hiatus (i'm thinking ps7), until they are able to reinvent it again. go ahead with the remasters and remakes if you must, sony, but i have no desire for those. on a side note, sometimes it is best to let a franchise rest until there is a team passionate and innovative enough to take it to the next level. barlog did exactly that with gow (2018) but it is now time to see santa monica flex its mind and create some new world's and characters. kratos will always be one of the great gaming characters as it stands but all good things do come to an end so that we can better appreciate what they left behind.

Re: Horizon MMO May Have Survived NCSOFT's Cull After All

Porco

@ButterySmooth30FPS if you can convince pushsquare to make a poll on this very subjet, i can say with 99% certainty the results would be exactly what i just said. ps5 would come in dead last in the rankings. those who are educated on the subject, know why and i won't spend an hour explaining it to you. i doubt you were a ps gamer from the beginning (wouldn't know any better) so you aren't even qualified to answer the question in the first place, nor dispute it. kids these days.

Re: Would You Pay $100 for GTA 6?

Porco

$100+tax to be a beta tester for what is likely to be a rather buggy open world game (at least at launch like with most releases). no doubt rockstar will iron out the kinks after a few months, but if anyone truly believes the game won't have bugs and performance issues on day one, better lower your expectations while you still can. no, it won't be cyberpunk levels of bad... there is just too much riding on this to allow that to happen. hell, even sony would provide resourcses to rockstar in this scenario when you consider how paltry sony's releases will be this year... but let's face it, this is a game of enormous scope and even with 5000 developers working on it around the clock, a completely polished experience just isn't in the cards without substantial beta testing and user data after launch.

Re: Would You Pay $100 for GTA 6?

Porco

come on now. just because rockstar/take2 could get away with that asking price, doesn't mean any other publisher would have the same result. gta 6 is the most unique case in the entire gaming industry. i'd like to see anyone else try that and not see their unit sales impacted. give it a try, i dare you in all seriousness, i have not purchased a game at launch, at full asking price, in about 8 years and that's not going to change. i generally don't buy games beyond the $30CAD mark anymore. as such, the launch price is irrelevent to me.

Re: Shuhei Yoshida on PSVR2: 'I'm Sorry'

Porco

is the dream finally over or are people going to continue to delude themselves over vr? it's dead. at least at sony it is. just because there are a handful of interesting vr experiences doesn't mean it is viable or has enough support amongst the gaming industry at large. time to move on. we could see vr rear its ugly head yet again in a decade or two, but it was premature to even attempt this technology in its current form, tech limitations and all. for once, xbox made the right call and didn't even flirt with the idea. well done, phil. dodged a bullet there.
