Sony's own PS5 streaming device, the PS Portal, was the best-selling gaming accessory of 2024 across the UK in terms of revenue, and the sixth best-selling in terms of units sold, new research reveals. Based on GfK Entertainment data gathered by ERA, the handheld achieved this through 143,845 unit sales.
The white and black PS5 DualSense controller variants shifted the most units in 2024 according to the data, with Xbox pads in the same colours third and fourth, and an Ear Force Recon headset in fifth. PS Portal sold the sixth most number of individual devices, but in terms of the revenue generated by the accessories, the Sony device comes out on top. In the UK, the PS Portal sells for £199.99 while a PS5 controller can range anywhere between £40 and £60, depending on whether they're on sale.
A device that was met with a lot of disinterest upon its announcement, the PS Portal has surprised even Sony in how well it's sold since launch. The company now actively promotes it in dedicated adverts and has since been updated — slowly but surely — with cloud streaming capabilities. Sony recently released a Midnight Black variant of the device.

At first I'm a hater of ps portal, but now I'm the biggest supporter of it. It's like wii u gamepad on steroid, just add native wifi compability to ps portal 2 (like wii u and it's gamepad, no internet needed) and it will be perfect I think 😃
Also the system looks weird but it's very comfortable to hold (again, just like wii u gamepad), and the midnight black version is really good.
It's so funny when you look back to the responses on our site (and others) when this was first rumoured/revealed.
Shows that Sony does know a thing or two about the market after all.
Sometimes a great product is something people don't necessarily know they want yet.
Always great to see something succeed despite what the self-loathing "fans" say.
@get2sammyb Like me lol, I hate it with a passion back then, but now I love this thing. I play ps5 a lot more now with ps portal, playing 2D games on it is like playing on psp/psvita successor. Oled screen and native wifi connection to ps5 will make ps portal 2 a hit I think 😃
@Cornpop76 It's not a handful, it's a new sony portable but it only can do streaming while most ps users want a true portable system like the switch, of course the discourse will be negative.
I've been loving mine. I picked up the PowerA charging dock for it the other day. Looks class with the light on.
I can't play isometric games on a big screen because they give me virtigo or something, but they feel perfect on Portal. I probably wouldn't touch Diablo if not for the Portal.
I still can never give this thing above a 6/10 just because it's a handheld without anything to do on the go, but to be honest I don't ever play my handhelds outside of my home.
I am still hopeful that they'll add some sort of little game to play natively on it, it's got about 1 gb of storage.
I love mine and I think it's a great product. The outrage over it seemed overblown to me at the time and it appears the market might agree.
It works well and the display is so vivid. I love using it.
Bought one last week, doesn't feel at all like a 200 quid device, didn't realize it was a touchscreen also, great product. Thumbsticks a bit small though but didn't buy it for high intensity games so shouldn't be a problem
I wonder how many of the people who bought it thought it was a real console.
Anyone who is a parent, or has a partner or flatmate that has to share a TV and has their gaming limited by this could always see there was a sizeable market for this. Or just people that wanted to play in bed.
And the hardware itself is brilliant. I don't need one, I can remote play or cloud stream to Steam Deck, but I still kinda want one, it's a lovely bit of kit.
What has impressed me most with this device is my ability to travel, connect to wi-fi and stream games from the premium online collection without any lag. I get more lag playing remote play (although barely any) away from home! Truly impressive.
@themightyant tbf the Steam Deck does a great job as a remote play device for PS5 and it's very east to setup, but the Portal is just, for me, so much nicer to hold and play on.
All it's missing in an oled screen. (The current screen feels top quality too though.)
@get2sammyb and mostly the review websites dont know the market. It is fun when some website says how Sony, being such a company for so long, is doing things wrong
@Shepherd_Tallon I agree. I played one at a mate's and was blown away how good the Portal felt. I don't actually think it needs an OLED as the LCD is so good, certainly the best LCD i've ever seen on a handheld and far better than the cheaper OLEDs on many portable PCs. I don't think OLED would offer much more. It's not like Steam Deck's first cheap LCD.
But the two biggest differences for me that almost made me buy one, despite not needing it were:
For now i'm holding out though.
@themightyant Agreed, the LCD screen is excellent already. Also yes, the size and ratio of the screen are near perfect.
I have that muscle memory issue with the Steam Deck too actually. I suppose it's only natural having spent 30 years on PlayStation and 30+ on Nintendo.
@Jrs1 To be fair, it's an obscure enough thing that the sort of people that would know little enough to think it's a standalone console wouldn't know it exists in the first place. Most of my friends aren't gamers and didn't know about it until I mentioned it. Even several who have a PS4 or 5 hadn't heard of it. It's more of a hardcore gamer thing.
I'm sure the ps+ streaming has helped. A few people probably just grabbed the portal and a sub. Cheap way to play some ps5 games.
Mine has literally just arrived this afternoon. Thought I would give it a try and see if it works as good as everyone says. Fingers crossed
I’m not a fan.
The Portal is the only product I’ve ever returned from the big gaming companies.
I couldn’t get a smooth connection from it and it just ruined my immersion. All I wanted was a WiiU like experience of playing my PS5 on handheld and having seamless 60fps gameplay with no input delay while my wife watched TV. Instead it was a jittery nightmare.
I get much better results from my laptop, which I still use for remote play.
I know people love it, but for me it is a massive disappointment. A real missed opportunity.
Not sure why we have a “defying the odds” narrative. Unless you mean “defying the I’ll-informed fanboy comments”. Which, to be fair, it has better than the PSVR2.
a device sells a few hundred thousand units worldwide and its declared a big success and game changing? haha. nobody actually believes that other than the few people who own one. not sure what the purpose of this article is because its not changing the perception of this very limited device to anyone who actually knows what it is and for good reason — it sucks.
@Kienda
Yeah, I was trying to play at a hotel a few weeks ago, terrible public wifi. If you don’t have a decent connection it’s a complete waste of money. Luckily I do. I couldn’t be without it.
@Matroska Yup totally get that, from an outsiders pov i wouldve said its a console.
When Portal was announced I saw this thing, chuckled, rolled my eyes, and wiped it from my memory, naturally assuming it would die and Sony would just pretend it didn't exist. I still have no idea how it's selling so well. But fair play to them. Nice to see.
I jumped onboard when they launched and I haven't looked back. I use it more than I directly use my Pro now. The only gripe I have is that it should have come with an OLED screen even if that impacted the running time.
@thefourfoldroot1 yeah, the infrastructure isn’t there for playing it everywhere. But I found problems even at home.
I would be willing to pay extra money for a dongle that I could stick into my PS5 and get a good connection to on the sofa.
@Cornpop76 If valve can make portable that run ps4 and some ps5 games why sony can't? Expecting that isn't wanting a jetpack, that's the portable device that valve, a company that smaller than sony mind you, can make. Of course the price should be more expensive than ps portal if sony made that.
I ended up getting a ps portal and it's fine but I find it dosnt stream very well. I've got gigabit Internet and on lan for my ps5 and it has issues connecting, staying connected (drops alot) , lag and just the game being crunchy. Let alone if I try using it to play my ps5 from someone else's house even with good Internet.
All the same applies to streaming games from ps+
It is rubbish at streaming in an old terrace. Unless I’m directly in front of my WiFi box it does not work. I’ve installed internet boost upstairs and STILL does not work. I cannot recommend it at all
I had my doubts about the Portal too, but bought one last fall & glad I did. Unable to play PS5 at night as where the TV it’s connected to is set up in an area of the house that would light up everything and wake everyone. Not an issue anymore. No issues with lag. Went with the recommended setup of connecting the PS5 directly to the modem/router. I do wish it had Bluetooth to be able to use AirPods. Overall though it’s been a great purchase and is used often.
@Cornpop76 You've got a thing about those skate parks eh, don't worry Tony Hawks 3 and 4 incoming 🤣
Well, if accounts like that of @ErrantRob are any indication, the thing does sound like it can stomach a proper hotspot Remote Play session on the go, with Sony perhaps taking a page out of GeForce Now's trick book (in contrast to Switch "cloud versions" that seem to push the default resolution regardless of whether your portable connection can handle it). This certainly elevates it further above the autopilot Wii U comparisons from way back when and makes it that much more of a Vita successor in the very aspect that the otherwise best PlayStation console (don't @ me) sadly wouldn't always provide adequate control schemes for. This still doesn't bump the $700+ combo high enough among my hobby spending priorities, but it sure lowers my eyebrow in regards to the device's general value and actual sales.
@CooCooKaChoo but doesn't Bluetooth have lag? I don't thing it'd a very good experience
@get2sammyb in fairness a lot of people's opinion changed after the cloud streaming. That was a massive boost to the product. Even more so once it comes out of Beta
@IceClimbersMain it has plenty to do on the go though?
@Kienda remote play is sketchy but streaming changed the device completely. Even more so when you'll be able to play your own library
@Porco it doesn't suck though. It's an awesome device. Play your PS games anywhere in the world? Dunno how people think something like that could suck
Got one at Xmas and have used it 2 or 3 times. It's fine at what it does and ideal for people without access to a TV but not really for me
@Cornpop76 Dude, Steam deck oled already available with cpu from years ago, if sony want to make ps4 pro like portable comparable to steam deck oled in battery life, they can. It's not delorian level technology
@Styledvinny79 totally agree, had one at launch. Would of been brilliant if it actually worked, my WiFi just wasn't up to it. Was just a laggy mess, sold it on unfortunately.
@Andy22385 By on the go, I mean going to places without internet, or good internet at that. Whether it be a car ride, an airplane flight, or an international country. My portal would be completely useless at 90% of places outside of my home because my phone hotspot just isn't enough for a playable connection (or at the very least, there's no reason to suffer with input lag and hotspots when I can just bring my Steam Deck oled instead).
@Cornpop76 ahhh youtubers ... what to say about them ... mockup planes, big words but all is just a click bate. Not all, but 95%
I am a proud owner since launch day. I am very happy with it!!!
