Santa Monica Studio has ruled out making any God of War announcements at a 20th anniversary panel for the series on 22nd March 2025, throwing into question recent speculation surrounding potential remasters of the original games. The potential re-releases gained traction when Giant Bomb journalist Jeff Grubb suggested Sony would share confirmation "closer to" the 20th anniversary, and you cannot get any closer than a celebratory panel exactly 20 years after the North American release of God of War.
Pouring cold water on the God of War fanbase's excitement, the developer said: "With such a stellar lineup and all the anticipation we’ve seen around the anniversary, we do want to be clear that there are no planned announcements for this event."
The event in question is a panel bringing together the voice actors of various God of War titles alongside a Los Angeles-based art exhibition. "Explore an exclusive showcase of tribute art, concept art, and memorabilia that highlights the rich legacy of this incredible series," the promo page reads. "Don’t miss out on photos ops and other exciting activities that will immerse you in the world of God of War!" You can learn more through the link.
The wording Santa Monica Studio uses is directly in relation to the event and doesn't completely rule out the developer making such an announcement on its own terms online. There's still just enough wiggle room for someone to convince themselves the reveal is imminent, but the voice actor panel isn't where the news will be shared — if it even exists at all.

they wouldn’t even sell as much as the reboot games; i love the og god of wars & couldn’t get into the new games but it ain’t a space for the classics in gaming anymore. the $ales and audience have spoken, so i knew it wasn’t real

@nomither6 Tony Hawks, Crash 1-3, various Star Wars games, Tomb Raider I-VI, various Konami collections and more have all sold really well hence why they keep doing them.
Calling it now, the ‘remasters’ are going to be a God of War drop on PS Plus with emulated games rather than the HD Collection.

@Balie3000 I wouldn’t say that’s necessarily true, 99% of this site’s output is regurgitating press releases rather than leaks or rumours. We’d just only hear about things half an hour after a Twitter post.

Wait Sony is not doing a remake or remaster? Now that’s a first and of course it’s one that we actually want. Not until dawn and others that don’t need one. Seems to be the days we live in.
its a strange time to be a gamer. people get more excited about remasters to games they can already play than looking forward to new, innovative experiences. what does that say about the current state of the industry?
Spoiler: They don’t exist and were only rumored by some grifters to have some clicks.
Ironically It’s even more likely a remaster of the 2018 game than any other.
Don’t take this the wrong way, I still enjoy games, and am currently playing Avowed, Split Fiction, Cyberpunk and a handful of multiplayer games, but there have been so many rumors that weren’t true and bad news regarding games over the past few years that I don’t get hyped much anymore.
I’m too busy living in the moment.
It may be better explained by using grand theft auto six. I truly don’t care when it releases. They could delay it for two more years and I still won’t care, but when it does release, I will be there day one.
When it comes to building up my hype, PlayStation has fallen dramatically in comparison to how I felt during the previous generations.

It's possible as next playstation plus premium update would be 20/03/25 that PS2 classic versions are added to the the service either on that day or the anniversary date. It's possible probably won't happen but we can hope

Cannot wait for Sony to make great games again for PS!! This has been the wordt gaming generation of my lifetime.
The only thing I'm expecting to come from the rumors are PS2 & PSP emulated versions of the Greek games. Then all but Ascension will be playable natively on PS4/5, which expected when even Santa Monica doesn't seem to care much for it.

Remastered remasters. Don't get me wrong, I love the original games, but either Sony can't emulate the PS3 or they can't be bothered to emulate the PS3.
In this regard, Xbox is streets ahead. It's a genuine pleasure to be able to pop an original Xbox or 360 disc into my Series X and play it (sometimes with FPS and resolution boosts).
I'm also certain that lots of 3rd party publishers have benefitted massively by having their old games available to buy on the Xbox store. I know I've bought tons of retro games digitally that go for crazy prices on disc.
I love my PS3 game collection and it would be amazing to have the option to play those discs on my PS5.

Which is why i dont trust rumors. If i dont get hyped then i dont set myself up for failure of expectations
