Very rare that I post anywhere but I think the stick the game is getting in some quarters is rather harsh.
Yes it does lack some of the soul and humour of the original trilogy (which I played and loved back in the day) but for a free to play model I think it’s good. The Flick-It mechanic is present and correct and while the challenges can get a little stale there’s more than enough to do for me who dips in every so often and has already put in 20 plus hours since main release September.
I also think (whispers this) that the microtransactions are very inoffensive and not pushed hard as game currently stands which is very welcome. I’ve not spent a penny and more than happy with my cosmetics. EA could easily have messed this up by using pay to play on certain areas or events so kudos to them (not often I say that with EA).
Again this is still early access and I’m really hoping it’s embraced enough to keep it going as there’s a lot to like here and I get the impression a lot of feedback will be listened too. Yes they’re trying to please the Fortnite crowd too (shudders) but there still plenty to enjoy for us old school skate players in my view. Fingers crossed this one has legs and skates long term.
Really liked the first one. Up to the point I found it too hard! This coming from someone who completed Braid without a guide back in the day. I suspect my brain has atrophied over the years. Can’t justify going near the sequel (let alone its DLC) until I’ve at least finished the first. A guide could get me past some of the harder parts but I hate using one for puzzle games. Feels like a cheated victory but maybe I’m being daft.
If one can sensibly separate ‘art from artist’ then Braid is a hell of a game. Objectively a brilliant achievement for one dev (with assistance in other areas I understand). In my 30 plus years of gaming completing (not to 100% though) Braid without a guide was one of my proudest moments. Blow may have his detractors (many sensible minded folk too) but it’s hard to argue with the quality of this. For those who like Braid the Witness is also excellent (if you ignore whatever it’s trying to ‘say’ - I had no idea) and Fez from different dev Phil Fish is also excellent. There’s many a tortured complex ‘artist’ throughout history and gaming has its share of them too!
@stu123 I’m tempted but fear I may experience same issues. Remote play via my iPad is unplayable. I’m interested where you bought it from / did you have any issues returning as you’d have obviously taken it out of the box etc so wondering if returns were an issue. If I could get one and easily return it if rubbish performance with my set up I’d be more tempted but don’t want to be stuck with a £200 paperweight! Thanks.
One of my proudest gaming moments was completing Braid sans guide / walkthrough. Didn’t 100% it but completed. Fantastic game and while JB may be ‘a bit of a one’ as my Gran would say man had / has talent. Witness is truly excellent too with some caveats.
@Rob_230 I’m not the sharpest grind rail in the park am I? Just done as suggested and yep showing up. Folk like you who continue to restore faith in the internet gaming community bit by bit. A thousand thanks!
Is someone able to explain how I buy Riders Republic Skate Edition (£14.99 according to this article)? I go on PS Store and it’s unavailable / I can’t see that edition. The Skate Pack is available under Add ONS but that over £30. I have previously purchased physical edition and via PS Plus. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
I’d be very interested to hear some real world experiences when available. I have tried my iPad on remote play in same room as the PS5 and router and about 100m speed and it’s generally unplayable. From some reviews I’ve read it looks like if you have a poor remote play experience the Portal may not fare much better. Any thoughts anyone? Thanks.
@UltimateOtaku91 yep that’s pretty much it with verified but I’ve played a number of playable and they’re fine. Think oled version is limited edition and only N America but I’m not sure. I went for the middle model a was very happy with it. I generally play with power cord plugged in in bed or on sofa. Also waiting to see how Portal stacks up as my Remote Play experience is awful even when in same room as router and PS5. Best of luck!
@UltimateOtaku91 I’ve only ever been a console gamer and it took an age for me to get the courage to jump onto the Steam Deck but I’m so glad I did. Majority of Verified games are fine ‘out of the box’ as it were and Playable ones generally perform well with little to no tweaking. There are also plenty of sites with suggested performance tweaks which are easy to follow. I’m a complete PC phobe in that regard but am very happy with my SD. If you do jump in consider middle model and large SD card.
Interesting! I was getting rather concerned about the lateness of the review embargo vs release date but seems to be reviewing well across the board. Rory edition about 8 years ago was a shameful effort awfully lacking in content and I still have very fond memories of the early Tiger Woods games which were very good (Pops was a great fantasy character).
This versions seems like they’ve found a good balance of style and substance and, unless I missed it in the review, not a mention of micro transactions in sight.
I suspect this will come down in price quite quickly so I’ll probably pick it up at some point soon. The 2K games just didn’t gel with me so looking forward to getting out on the fairway with this one at some point.
Lovely article and retrospective and you can no doubt see from my profile pic that I’m a fan of the horned one. Easily one of my favourite games of all time and indeed a masterpiece. The Last Guardian came close to repeating its awe and excellence and SotC wasn’t too shabby either (but the weakest of the three in my view but it’s still a bloody amazing game). Happy Birthday to one of the greatest games ever made and kudos to Ueda. Here’s hoping he gets another wonderful creation out before I’m 50. I tweeted him after completing TLG and he liked my tweet (or one of his admin bods did). One of my proudest Twitter moments.
@dimi Winters Expansion is £12 now in UK store vs £16 normal price but sale ends tonight (midnight UK time) or you can pick up the Gold Edition which includes game and expansion for £27 I believe. Not sure if you’re UK based or similar in your area but FYI.
This looks ace it really does. I loved 4 when it first came out but the rose tinted glasses didn’t work when I tried to revisit and just struggled with the control scheme. If this is even close to RE2 Remake (and I suspect it may well be better) then GOTY could be in the bag. Not sure what, if anything, they’ll then do with 5 and 6 which both had their fair share of bashing for different reasons. Suspect it’ll be 9 next.
Genuinely alarmed by a) the abuse and b) the stupidity of the abuser. I understand there’s some pretty disturbed folk out there but wow. Really hope this individual is banned from Twitter for life. Still knowing witchcraft they’ll probably find a way back on to harass reasonable folk.
@Mysterio annoyances aside (I do feel your pain as that really bugs me) it’s a cracking little game. Well more of a cracking little walking simulator but great nonetheless. I recently got a month of GamePass to play it again after hearing great podcast on it. Enjoy.
I consider myself platform agnostic but the more the months go by the more pleased I am with my PS Plus Extra membership and less likely I am to buy a series X and GPass with it. My son now has a PS5 too so we’re getting great value from Plus between us.
Medium and Odyssey are highlights for me this month (nearly bought Odyssey on sale only a few days ago but held off as not ready to play it and got burned by that fire with Origins only few months back).
The only real game I really want on GPass is Plague Tale sequel and that came to Plus so I suspect they may have an exclusivity deal with MS for a period but then it’ll hopefully be on Plus.
In my humble opinion Plus Extra is turning into rather good value!
@MFTWrecks original was reasonably stand alone in terms of story from what I remember and committing to remaking the trilogy (which reduced in quality over its three games) was probably too big a risk initially. I’m happy with this approach though of course I’d have preferred the three games done to this quality for the price of one!
A) This looks just like the original in terms of gameplay and story. B) That’s a good thing and just shows how excellent the gameplay etc was in the original. C) The grafficks (!) look phenomenal. This will deffo be one to pick up when the price is right. I loved the DS series and it’s basically Resi in space but again that’s a damn good thing. Sign me up for a trip on the Ishimura.
Toem looks my bag. Annoyed as bought AC Origins a while back on sale but never played it (silly me) but I feel better as I’ve been very close to buying Deathloop on a number of occasions and not done so. This update is therefore pretty robust in my view.
Bugsnax has been on my wish list for some time (more for my daughter’s benefit than mine) so pleased to see this included. Yakuza games sound grand but I’m not sure I’ve got the time to really get into that series.
@StandardCabrera I’ve tried Outlast a couple of times but can’t get far due to the terror setting in very early. One of these days I’ll put on my big boy pants and get further in. Maybe.
Played it some time ago on GamePass and was very impressed. Listened to a podcast on it (Cane and Rinse series - THOROUGHLY recommended for gaming fans out there who like to listen to 2 hour deep dives on specific games and no I’m not on a commission, just a Podcast has made me want to play again but will likely do so on GP or wait until it’s on Plus which I’m sure it will be at some point.
I’m genuinely flabbergasted (a word I save for special occasions) by this. I only buy digital if on sale / very competitively priced or there’s no alternative. Physical is invariably cheaper and have sell-on-ability. Appreciate the convenience digital offers but until prices are considerably lower than physical I’ll stick to physical when it a game I want to own (as opposed to PS Plus / Game Pass).
I completed it once (not a trophy hound so likely won’t revisit any time soon) and rated it 8/10. Agree that’s it may not be a fantastic game but all things considered I felt it was very enjoyable. Yes had it not been a cat as the main protagonist then I’d have likely rated it 6 of 7 but it was a cat and it was all put together with clear love and polish and the fact that it was short made me appreciate it more. It’s not the second coming and certainly not GOTY material but for what it was I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it.
Delighted this is reviewing well and I really can’t wait to play it. Sounds like it’s only about 5 or 6 hours but I’m generally slow at these sort of games so that’s probably up to 8 or 9 for me. My daughter and I have been well hyped for this one so it’s lovely to see it should live up to expectations.
Loved the Dead Space series (even last one which rather jumped the shark) and will happily play this when it’s been out a little while and come down in price. @Sil_Am don’t play Resi 7 then for goodness sake. Scariest game I’ve ever played I think (lights off and headphones on).
I’m a trifle worried about this and seems to have come rather out the blue. Guess we can’t complain (yet) as not seen the finished product and it’s free. As others have mentioned here it will be good if there’s an offline / single player mode but we’ll have to wait and see I guess. As long as micro transactions are mainly cosmetic then I guess it’ll be ok. Still feel disappointed it not a ‘proper’ full price release but I hope to be pleasantly surprised.
Glad the taser got a mention. My brother and I used to take great glee in tasering the baddies for as long as we could (psychological profiling would probably have had a field day with us as youngsters). A great trilogy of games and I was excited to replay so downloaded immediately. Unfortunately I couldn’t stomach more than 5 minutes (and about three taserings) due to controls. Had I more patience then perseverance would have likely meant I coped better but with games like Ghost of Tsushima to play instead I’m afraid Gabe and his wobbly hips lost out.
This really is a shame. As other commenters have said it’s a beautiful world and fantastically realised and just seems to have gone to waste. Such a pleasant world as far as I can tell compared to GTAO. I’ll carry on posse-ing up with my son when he wants to but I’m a little jaded to Online anyway having put nearly 90 hours into single player which was incredible (even if moment to moment gameplay and missions still rather dated).
Ooh. Guns guns! Just seen trailer and like many other folk here I was thinking it looked a bit dated already graphics game. Saying that it made me click on this article and pretty much every film quoting comment here (including the incredibly misogynistic ones I’m ashamed to say) made me chuckle due to my love of the film. As long as the games gives really ****** gas mileage I’m interested. Suspect the legend that it Clarence Bodicker won’t make an appearance sadly. We’re he to then it’s be day one for me.
And in other breaking ‘news’ - the sky is blue. Seriously though if you’re sensible with the types of games you buy and look for sales (I’m not as thorough in that area as I should be) and / or go in for the Game Pass / PS Plus models I honestly believe gaming is a very reasonably priced pastime. I don’t go down the pub and rarely eat in restaurants or buy takeaway food / coffee etc.
Look at gaming vs cinema - couple of tickets to the cinema (excluding parking and food) basically buys you a triple A title (after it’s been out for a while and reduced in price) that’s generally good for 20 hours plus entertainment (and probably has a resale value after at 25-50% if you’re son inclined). It’s a damn good value hobby and always has been.
I’ve had a quick look on the app and PS5 earlier and it looks very clean and well integrated in my view. I’m not referring to comments above as not read them all but some gamers are so entitled. I’ve already upgraded from Essential to Extra and offering looks great value for money to me and I’ve already downloaded Ghost of T, Syphon Filter (can’t wait to taser folk again; incidentally this one seemed to be free before I even upgraded).
It’s £90 for a year and if I only play a handful (literally) of these games over 12 months then that’s value for money and I expect to play far more. Will probably leave the Premium tier as I’m going to struggle to clear what I want to in Extra.
Lets not all compare to GamePass. With new PS Plus you know exactly what you’re getting and how much it costs. Take the informed decision to upgrade / subscribe or don’t. It really is that simple.
I’m looking forward to mooching around more later. Seems a reasonable opener / start to me so well done Sony!
I’m currently on Essential tier and once I finish God of War I’ll likely upgrade to Extra as there’s a few games I’ve got me eye on (G of Tsushima). I always wonder what the hullabaloo is about from the naysayers regarding these things (not referring to any comments under this post that I can see yet). You know how much you’re getting and what you’re paying for it and to me looks like damn fine value vs a single new game cost. It may not be GamePass but for the time being it’s the best we’ll get on the PS5 (and 4) and I’ll happily give it a year at least.
Skate, 2 and 3 were all great games so I’m well psyched up for this. If it’s similar core mechanics than previous games plus oodles of this gen polish it could be an absolute cracker. Also Coach Frank better be in it or I’ll be gnarly disappointed. (Heads off to practice Christ Airs…)
Very looking forward to this and if suitable it’ll be right up my daughters street too. She’s mad about felines. I’m assuming it’ll be modest in size / length but don’t see that as a negative. Hopefully it’ll be the cats whiskers (sorry).
Love the original and tried to replay recently and got a few hours in but I did find the control scheme a slog and was putting me off the game. I’ll probably wait until the remake and try that but I’ll definitely be getting this as it’s a fantastic game.
@sammybarker. Hi. Do you know if the PS Plus version of Red Dead 2 also includes the online game? Great video by the way and it’s very Game Passy but in a good way. I like a nice clean interface and looking forward to PS Plus Extra ( my likely tier) landing in Europe soon. Thanks.

Such a pleasant world as far as I can tell compared to GTAO. I’ll carry on posse-ing up with my son when he wants to but I’m a little jaded to Online anyway having put nearly 90 hours into single player which was incredible (even if moment to moment gameplay and missions still rather dated).
Re: Shots Fired in First RoboCop: Rogue City PS5 Gameplay Trailer
@BritneyfR_ee took me a moment to process that (deliberate) mis quote but then it hit me. Genius! 🤣
Re: Shots Fired in First RoboCop: Rogue City PS5 Gameplay Trailer
Ooh.
Re: Gaming Spend Will Continue to Decline in US as Living Costs Increase, Says NPD Report
Re: PS Plus Extra, Premium Now Live in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand
Re: Reminder: PS Plus Extra, Premium Roll Out Across Europe Tomorrow
I’m currently on Essential tier and once I finish God of War I’ll likely upgrade to Extra as there’s a few games I’ve got me eye on (G of Tsushima). I always wonder what the hullabaloo is about from the naysayers regarding these things (not referring to any comments under this post that I can see yet). You know how much you’re getting and what you’re paying for it and to me looks like damn fine value vs a single new game cost. It may not be GamePass but for the time being it’s the best we’ll get on the PS5 (and 4) and I’ll happily give it a year at least.
Re: Rumour: Skate 4 Reportedly Ready for Full Reveal in July
Skate, 2 and 3 were all great games so I’m well psyched up for this. If it’s similar core mechanics than previous games plus oodles of this gen polish it could be an absolute cracker. Also Coach Frank better be in it or I’ll be gnarly disappointed. (Heads off to practice Christ Airs…)
Re: First Impressions: Stray Is Shaping Up to Be a Supurrbly Detailed PS5, PS4 Adventure
Very looking forward to this and if suitable it’ll be right up my daughters street too. She’s mad about felines. I’m assuming it’ll be modest in size / length but don’t see that as a negative. Hopefully it’ll be the cats whiskers (sorry).
Re: Stray Jumps Straight to PS Plus Extra, Premium on 19th July
Looking forward to this one and if done right it could be a bit of a classic. If it’s suitable my daughter will also love it as she’s cat mad.
Re: Resident Evil 4 Remake Announced for PS5, Out March 2023
Love the original and tried to replay recently and got a few hours in but I did find the control scheme a slog and was putting me off the game. I’ll probably wait until the remake and try that but I’ll definitely be getting this as it’s a fantastic game.
Re: Take a Full Tour of the New PS Plus Tiers
@get2sammyb please see my question above. Thanks.
Re: Take a Full Tour of the New PS Plus Tiers
@sammybarker. Hi. Do you know if the PS Plus version of Red Dead 2 also includes the online game? Great video by the way and it’s very Game Passy but in a good way. I like a nice clean interface and looking forward to PS Plus Extra ( my likely tier) landing in Europe soon. Thanks.
