@PixelDragon It is. The issue I have is that the PS5 isn’t actually better than Xbox and I would argue that the Xbox is much more user friendly and you have access to a hell of a lot more games.
The reason that PlayStation is selling like hit cakes is down to one thing and it sure as hell isn’t to do with the amount of games or games in general. It’s about brand. Simple as that. Brand loyalty to PS is through the roof and people are thing because it’s a PlayStation. That’s what is happening and in terms of consoles, Xbox will never get that back. Far too late.

@PixelDragon I am not sure they are even trying to compete anymore. Soon enough they will have a streaming stick and TV app for all smart TV’s. They basically made the Series X and S not worth buying as you can essentially buy an older console for less money and use it as a streaming box. They literally took out a huge gun and shot themselves right through the foot!

Xbox will surely become cloud and GamePass only within ten years. Game UK are selling PS5’s at a rate of 5/1. That’s just incredible and proves that where PlayStation are concerned, the brand is bigger than the product. Most people I know with a PS5 say they only really play retro games and little else. Yet it still slaughters the Xbox. xCloud will eventually be a product that is on every console but Xbox will just be a brand of the past. They simply cannot, even with their money, keep losing as much as they do on xBox consoles.

I want as many games to be available on as many platforms as possible but also am happy with exclusives. When all systems are on top form, gamers benefit but this whole saga has become more about Jim Ryan and Phil Spencer acting like spoiled brats in a playground.

I still don’t get why COD is the only way Sony makes profits. That claim is odd. And lacking in reality.

The whole saga has been farcical. Will be interesting see what MS do with the 10 year deals they have been signing all over the place.
If the deal is allowed to go through in the US and EU, does that then mean that it automatically stands worldwide?
If it does go through then can Sony appeal?
I have a feeling that this saga could go for a few years yet.

PlayStation will always blow Xbox out of the water with console sales. Sony could put out ten games a year and still sell gangbusters. The fan base is that committed. Sony have done little to push PS5 and it’s sales are crazy.
Nintendo will always sell well as long as the system is pitched right - see Wii U Vs Switch.

Xbox are going all in on cloud. I’d say that in ten years they won’t even do consoles. Streaming boxes and sticks.

@Kevw2006 Maybe. Still seems strange but cloud will never replace consoles across the board. Xbox know they are never catching PlayStation so may as well go to cloud only which I expect they will.
They have even signed another 10 year cloud deal today.

A week ago the UK CMA were pretty happy with the deal. Don’t moaned as they usually do but it seemed to be inevitable it would be rubber stamped.

It then gets blocked due to concerns over cloud gaming / something that was pretty much not mentioned before.

It’s just odd for it to have been blocked based on such an odd issue. Xbox could rule cloud gaming and it wouldn’t make a jot of difference to Sony. It’s not what they are bothered about.

@Kidfried Sure there will be more exclusives but Sony has plenty it doesn’t allow to go anywhere else at all. Nintendo doesn’t really come into it as the ten year deal wouldn’t have mattered much anyway to them. Sure, we may have for COD mobile on Switch or a naff port a few times but I doubt Nintendo are sat there worried about this news. They are happy to let Sony and Xbox play their playground games.
The idea that this deal would have killed Sony - Jim Ryan said PlayStation only makes a profit because of COD - is absolute nonsense. Pure and utter fabrication.
More exclusives yes but also it would still have meant many more cross platform games.
But the reason for the deal being blocked in the UK is due to cloud gaming. Something that was pretty much not mentioned throughout.
The reason for blocking the deal is bizarre and seems to have come at the very last minute.

Quality exclusives breed competition. But we are not in the 1980’s and 1990’s days of Nintendo Vs Sega fanboys. There are still some but most gamers enjoy gaming no matter what system or systems they play on.

The odd game you will miss if you only have one system but nowadays you will miss very few.

When every console does well, gamers win. The only company I see wanting to be the best and stop the others is Sony.

@NEStalgia Okay. Xbox is not going to outsell PlayStation. PS5 is already outselling PS4 at the same stage of sales. Bearing in mind it wasn’t readily available for such a long time , that’s incredible sales.
Xbox is going to be a cloud only platform. That is the business model .

They will stop making consoles soon enough.
They want the brand everywhere.
Sony want to strangle the industry.

@Kidfried Nonsense. Xbox making more games available on more systems is good news. Sony are the kings of exclusivity and apart from baseball hold as much as they can back for PlayStation owners.
I love PS but their argument over all of this has been incredibly hypocritical.

@NEStalgia They do both have cloud and remote play but Sony’s shocking at times. Xbox cloud runs off Series X architecture and they have a huge set up for it. Sony less so. You need the cloud service to run off the architecture of the console. They will always make performance better.

Stadia failed but because of the massive breadth of Google servers it ran like a console. Performance wise it was slick. Mind you, there was hardly anyone on so that helped!!!

They don’t sell enough consoles. Full stop. You could pay £240 for an Xbox Series S but if you just want to play at home and have decent internet you may as well but an Xbox One S and use it as a streaming box. Xbox is never going to move ahead of PlayStation.

@Kidfried There will be assumptions of course. I’m not really talking conspiracy theories. It’s all the brutal side of business. You have good cop Phil and bad cop Jim but they both want the same thing which is to dominate the market.

I didn’t believe that the deal would give Xbox any major power. PS5 is selling like crazy just because of the PlayStation brand. Sony know that. I’m just saying that the whole thing has been blown out of all proportion.

Do you really believe that without COD, PlayStation would die or be unable to make profits as Ryan said? It wouldn’t but it was never going to be without COD. That just was not going to happen.

I just take a common sense approach that more games on more systems is good for gamers.

@TheArtfulDodger You have made an argument and then totally destroyed your own argument. Ten year deal…., and beyond. The ten year deal keeps COD everywhere for at least 10 years. And it would have been longer. The focus on COD has been a huge lie from Jim Ryan. PlayStation could survive without it but they don’t need to. Look at PS5 sales. I have one and hardly use it. I would have been better keeping my PS4 for a few years longer really.
Games being on more platforms is brilliant imho.
Today actually makes that reality disappear. No COD on Nintendo. Not that will really matter to Nintendo that much.
In reality, I wouldn’t be surprised if once this finally all falls through that Sony try to buy Activision/Blizzatd and it goes through.

Sony are in a good position. The PS5 is now selling like crazy despite lacking many games. It’s cloud and streaming service is poor so that’s why the block was wanted. But PlayStation isn’t really bothered about cloud is it?
This was never about COD ever. The idea that Sony only makes money due to COD was an incredible lie.
I think the deal would made no difference to anything and would have given more gamers the chance to play more games.
Mainly playing Nintendo as I prefer handheld gaming means the deal doesn’t really affect me but I play on many platforms.
This whole deal has been embarrassing really.

As for Xbox, this is bad news but they will still recover and move on.

Jim Ryan has played a blinder and manipulated the situation well.

The reason the ‘Direct’ formula has worked so well for Nintendo is that they hardly do any talking. It’s just games, games and more games. Sony , and Xbox to some degree as well, get far too involved in trying to massage presenter egos rather than focusing on what gamers want to see and that is games.
As for PSVR 2, it’s going to go the same way as PSVR 1 - not enough games, the install rate will be low and it will just slowly fade away until we get PS6 and then PSVR 3.

Sony could do to get back to basic right now because they just seem to be lurching from one place to another with little sense of any direction.

@4kgk2 The Switch is nearly 6 years old though and the fact that it’s PS5’s closest competitor is pretty mad! Says a lot about Xbox

@get2sammyb I really want to get this but in the middle of a cost of living crisis , the price is just too much. I’m not saying it’s not worth it but when the outlay for the PS5 is so much, to them try and find another 500 pounds plus just isn’t viable for me and I suspect for many others as well which is sad. I think if they drop the price, which I’m afraid they will have to in the end, to around £300, this will never reach the mass appeal that it deserves to. Maybe a bundle of console and VR2 could work for newcomers but with PS stock now readily available, the additional outlay is just going to be prohibitive.

Hey, I have been a bit out of the PlayStation loop for a while in terms of playing games. With the new subs are any of the tiers like game pass in the same that some games are available via cloud only? I was sure there wasn’t but anyone who can advise? Appreciated. Cheers.

So does anyone know or think that there will be a subscription service where you will be able to play games without the need for a PlayStation console?

@GrahamBanas - totally agree with you. It just all feels really half baked. Okay for an hour but ultimately a bit dull.

I think if GamePass ended anywhere it would more likely be on a more powerful Nintendo Switch as it would tick the box of gaming on the go. I know you can game on the go with Xcloud but tbh it’s not that great in the UK unless you have decent 5G and it’s not even worth the hassle on a long train journey - in the UK certainly. GamePass on PS could happen - anything ‘could’ happen of course but it would essentially mean Sony and MS advertising each other at the same time. The amount of variables from all of this are endless and potentially limitless.

PlayStation will outsell Xbox anyway when it comes to consoles. Xbox want to have Xbox on as many systems as possible and accessible in as many ways as possible. I think all will be well. It’s time to just take a breath.

We just need to wait and see. PlayStation fans haven’t got much to cheer right now which is not in doubt but the PS5 is still selling well and once widely available will increase sales rapidly.
Some of these pieces are starting to come across as scaremongering when actually what we all need to do is stop the hysteria and wait for the dust to settle. PlayStation may lose some games but the biggest franchises will remain multi platform - that will make MS even more money so change that would be madness and also MS will not want to alienate such a large proportion of the gaming world because it would make it less competitive. Gaming right now has excelled with so much variety and choice. Those trying to set off non existent console wars need to stop, take stock and focus on the here and now which is a great time to be a gamer, no matter where and how you play.

The hysterical - and I don’t mean funny - reactions to this takeover really do need to calm down. Social media has its uses but some of the reactions have been so over the top it’s almost beyond fantasy. There are arguments for and against the takeover but it’s happening. Firstly let’s hope that MS get rid of the toxicity at Activision/Blizzard as an absolute priority. There is still too much toxicity in the gaming arena and that has to end.
When it comes to the takeover itself , I just don’t see that MS will suddenly stop some huge franchises coming to PlayStation. The more systems games like CoD are on the more money MS will make and that’s not something they are going to just push aside. There could be a case of timed exclusives but that’s probably the biggest difference that will be seen. The games will still come.

The idea that this is the end of Nintendo or PlayStation is completely ludicrous. I understand the size of the news but seriously there is a need to get a grip on reality and remember that the gaming industry is at its strongest point on many a year.

The news might not please everyone but it’s not the death knell to gaming some would try and have us believe.

@Valgore which is exactly why MS won’t stop the games like Cod coming to PlayStation. They know competition is good and that has been a consistent massage from Phil Spencer for such a long time. Sony and Nintendo (it doesn’t really affect Nintendo anyway) have nothing to be worried about. This post about the end of PlayStation is just beyond daft.

I think there is a danger of hysteria here. Some of the comments on social media are frankly laughable. Calm down people. The likes of CoD are not going to go Xbox exclusive- if they do then they will be timed exclusives anyway but Spencer has always been clear that he sees gaming as being for all regardless of what system you play on. There seems to be a massive knee jerk reaction happening here that MS will just kill PS off and take all of their games for themselves. It is just not going to happen. Sony are not going to stop making consoles like Sega did. Why on Earth would they? PS5 is still selling well despite the shortages and will take off once the shortages end which they will this year. Nintendo are never going to just make games - they will always innovate and bring out new systems or at least build on the Switch model for the next 10 to 20 years and they will always have their IP.
Yes MS have bought some huge studios and this is a huge one - massive - but there needs to be a reality check. The games will still be there and we will still be able to choose which system we game on and enjoy gaming. Gaming wars are old and pointless and need to be left back in the 90’s.
Chill and enjoy gaming getting better and better as it is.

Argos are just facilitating scalpers and also Sony are allowing this to happen and not making comment. It is just poor all round.

It is just another huge example of EA being lazy. The game sells so they cannot be bothered to put any effort into each years game. As long as people keep buying EA’s awful yearly sports games they will keep doing it again and again.

What is more annoying is that it seems they are waiting until October to announce it. That gives 1st PS4 buyers next to no time to ingrate because basically what is being said is that without PSVR will be crap.
What people are also forgetting is that all this means is that if you want to upgrade you need to buy a new telly. The cost is massive to just get better graphics although that seems to be all that PS4 is compared to PS3.
Sony are simply taking the piss.
