Those lucky b*stards over at Wired have managed to get their hands on the PlayStation 5's controller, supposedly named the DualShock 5. According to the publication, it looks "an awful lot like the PS4's DualShock 4", so you can expect a very similar design when compared to Sony's current-gen pad.
But there are some really interesting details here. For starters, the next-gen controller offers adaptive triggers, meaning that the tension of the L2 and R2 buttons can change depending on what action you're taking in-game. For example, pulling back on a bow string may offer more resistance than if you're, say, pulling a trigger on a gun.
Next, it sounds like this thing's packing some seriously impressive rumble. "It boasts haptic feedback far more capable than the rumble motor console gamers are used to, with highly programmable voice-coil actuators located in the left and right grips of the controller," writes Wired.
According to the publication, driving across different terrain in a PS5 port of Gran Turismo Sport can be felt through the controller thanks to this new rumble tech. "Driving on the border between the track and the dirt, I could feel both surfaces. Doing the same thing on the same track using a DualShock 4 on a PS4, that sensation disappeared entirely." Exciting stuff.
Apparently, this stuff has been in development at Sony for quite a while -- at one point, the improved controller was going to ship with the PS4 Pro, but Sony didn't want to split users. As such, it's been kept up the company's sleeve for PS5, and it sounds like the wait has been worth it.
We don't know how much the DualShock 5 is going to cost, but it sounds pretty beefy. Are you looking forward to holding this thing in your hands? Vibrate in the comments section below.

HD Rumble you say?
all sounds better than that speaker tbh.
if all this is true than they can just remove the speaker idea.
i know it has it's fans but that speaker is just awfull in quality and just feels out of place when playing a game that uses that speaker. it's just weird having game sounds come out the controler.
boring..no innovation from sony (as expected)
Love the sound of it.
Theres a 'microphone' like thing too?
All sounds good, especially the USB C port. The dualshock 4s are the only devices we have that still use micro, will be happy to only have to use one type from now on! Though I do hope ps4 peripherals will still work, don't want to have to buy another wheel anytime soon :/
Sound like it could be expensive
so the touchpad wont be replaced with a touchscreen as rumored?
(will read the article later on the day)
@manu0 Jeez, you’re such a negative nancy.
@jdv95
'Combined with an improved speaker on the controller, the haptics can enable some astonishing effects'
Speaker is great
Ooh, not bad. Enough innovation without it seeming overly gimmicky, it is a controller after all.
Let’s hope they actually include a decent battery this time around.
@manu0 You want innovation. Sony has you covered.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-Playstation-Duvet-POLYCOTTON-SINGLE/dp/B07MMN6BNM
Sounds good. I’m glad that Sony isn’t trying to copy Nintendo with a touchscreen integration. Even though the new rumble feedback sounds a lot like Nintendo’s HD rumble, as the lovely Alex mentioned above, it seems to have enough features to stand on it’s own.
the ps5 seems to be packing heat!
and the trigger changes would work great with ellie's bow for the obvious ps5 version of TLOU 2.
Glad Sony is keeping the main design similar to the DS4. I mean, why fix whats not broke? I love the DS4 so I know I'll love the DS5.
So... Looks a lot like PS1 DualShock. You would have thought they would revamp it a little after 25 years.
@manu0 Please stop with the obvious trolling in almost every single PS5 article.
@manu0 Found the Microsoft shill/fanboy.
They just need to get rid of the light in front of the controller it's unnecessary and thanks to that even when you dim the light still loses battery faster
pfft. i hate using L2/R2 for guns/bows whatever. R1/L1 all the way. i suppose it's a bit too much to hope for a re-programmable controller.
I hope this HD rumble is as satisfying as it is on Switch, and I’m sure it will be. That alone is worth getting a new controller for!
If it was exactly the same as the DS4 Pad I would be happy anyway
Aint the dualshock 5 will be already in the ps5 with the console.word up son
That new rumble sounds impressive. It's mad how vibrations through the pad can make games feel so immersive.
makes sense if the system is going to have backwards compatibility
@ShogunRok ummm..1) it's not trolling 2) i'm not the one who created a new article for every single piece of new information. so obviously i have to comment on the separate articles that YOU created.
The adaptive triggers sound... breakable.
Probably doesn't mean much to a lot of players - I know plenty of people who go through controllers like tictacs, the careless monsters!
@manu0 Why would you go and reply like that? Now there's nothing I can do but drop the hammer.
@jdv95 nah! The speaker is actually cool! The touchpad however...they need to do something with it! I was expecting an actual touchscreen that you could have maps or mini maps or whatever...
Sounds great, hd rumble is awesome and this sounds a step in. Option for gyro aiming please!!!
Eh. HD rumble. Hope they remove the touchpad and give share/options actual buttons that protrude from the controller.
"But there are some really interesting details here. For starters, the next-gen controller offers adaptive triggers, meaning that the tension of the L2 and R2 buttons can change depending on what action you're taking in-game. For example, pulling back on a bow string may offer more resistance than if you're, say, pulling a trigger on a gun."
That could actually be neat.
@R1spam The PS4 controller has a great gyrometer and is full able to allow for gyro aiming in games. It's down to the developers themselves to enable it as an option in their games.
@AFCC nah a touchscreen with actuall displays would distract me from the game imo. besides that would increase the price of the controler a lot not to mention the battery life would suffer.
what they should do is keep the current touchpad but let it have more use in games rather than just being a fancy select/ open map button.
the speaker is just very useless if you play with headphones in. and since they are pushing 3D audio (mostly done via headsets) it's just seems pointless to have a speaker. even the touchpad has more use than that.
I hope it is compatible with DS4. I really hate buying new 60 dollar controllers every generation.
@ShogunRok What a shame you had to drop the ban hammer... you could've had a scoop there..."Phil Spencer disappointed at PS5 coverage trending all over the internet!"
@Ralizah I remember you saying you had it set up on pc and only when you hit L2. Sounds ideal to be honest, would love it for last of is 2
@jdv95 But how will you be able to hear your BB in Death Stranding if the controller doesn't have speakers built in?
@Octane most likely just through the headset.
the speaker is switched off by default when you use a headset on ps4 so i guess the sound of the speaker would just transfer to the headset on ps5
it's like that with all the games i have played on ps4.
as for the tv speakers i would guess the sounds would transfer to the tv aswell.
Awesome, more things to disable on day one. I hate rumble of any kind in almost all games, driving games are the only exception and if the PS5 is like PS4 with its piss poor selection of driving games then I won't be making use of it very often.
@jdv95 quite happy with the touchscreen, but yeah, more games need to implement it's use in more inventive ways. It would be cool if you could use it to perform various functions, in game, by drawing different signs.
Have to say, though... I do quite like the little controller speaker!
@Ralizah @R1spam wow, can gyro aiming be used on PC if the controller supports it? I didn’t think PC games would allow that.
I’m asking cause I’m seriously pondering buying a gaming laptop and using my Switch Pro Controller with that, and if I could play, I don’t know, Borderlands 3 with gyro aiming it’d be freaking awesome. Love gyro aiming ❤️
@Ralizah heavenly sword released practically at launch on ps3 and that, already, had a pretty good gyro for aiming in game. I recall, as you threw things or fired at enemies, the game would go slow-mo as you steered the projectile and it was great fun!
Could definitely work for remote controlled rpg's in future metal gear games... Take note, kojima
as long i can use my ds4 on the ps5 and dont have to fork out 70 dollars for a ps5 controller, im happy. i really dont care about more rumble that will suck more battery and adaptive triggers that have more fine parts that can break.
Longer battery please. That'll do me.
@R1spam Yeah, I enabled gyro in RE2 so that it only activated whenever I squeezed L2 to aim. In DOOM, I made it where the gyro is enabled or disabled as a toggle, since you're effectively aiming at all times in that game.
I would have LOVED gyro aiming in Horizon: Zero Dawn, what with all of the aiming you do with bow+arrow in that game.
@J2theEzzo I'm hoping we see more controller customization options on PS5. That'd be the sort of cool next-gen feature that'd convince me to jump in sooner than later.
@clvr Switch Pro and the Dualshock 4 can both be configured to enable gyro aiming for almost any game on Steam. You can enable it automatically, squeeze a button to enable it, whatever. It's fully customizable. The ability to full customize what your controllers do in games is arguably Steam's biggest killer app as a launcher.
I believe it can also be used for non-Steam games if you add the games to the Steam launcher.
Borderlands 3 is an EGS exclusive on PC, though, so I don't know how well that'll work out.
To be clear, the level of control you have over your controller via Steam is so complete that you can even customize the lightbar.
https://www.wepc.com/how-to/use-ps4-controller-on-pc/
Method One on that website tells you how to connect your DS4 to Steam.
It takes a bit of trial and error to customize gyro-enabled controls from scratch, but the good thing is that, if anyone has uploaded a gyro-enabled config to the community tab (I do for some games, and other people do as well), you can just download it and not even have to worry about customizing anything beyond the gyro sensitivity (in my configs, I dial up the hardware sensitivity to max and tell people to dial down the software sensitivity within the game via the 'mouse sensitivity' option).
@J2theEzzo Kojima is no longer with Konami after a highly public years old fight and Kojima has his own company now which is making Death Stranding. Konami owns Metal Gear. Kojima will never make a MG game again unfortunately. MG is dead (see MG Survive...bleh) He didn't even get to completely finish 5 before he was pushed out.
@Ralizah wow, that’s awesome!
Also, I didn’t know BL3 qas an Epic exclusive on PC, that sucks...
Do you know if GOG and Epic also allow the same kind of flexibility as Steam does?
@jdv95 I always find myself wishing they'd use the speaker more. It's cool when walkie-talkie or radio chatter comes through there. Feels more immersive. Certainly not out of place. Horror games have really caught me off guard with it as well. And besides, you can always turn it off, so why remove it? Just because YOU don't like it?
@clvr Epic has almost no features to its launcher. It's incredibly barebones. Thus the anger every time they moneyhat games for timed exclusivity.
GOG's launcher doesn't feature that sort of controller customizability either, to my knowledge, but, thanks to the fact that you can download their games DRM free, you can import games you buy via GOG into Steam and customize your play experience with them on there.
Oh, RE: Borderlands 3 being exclusive, it looks like that exclusivity ends April 2020. I imagine it'll go up on Steam after that.
EDIT:
After doing some research it looks like you can play EGS releases through Steam as well. Linking a thread on Reddit explaining how to do this.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/ahmndp/play_subnautica_from_epic_games_launcher_through/
@manu0 It's a game controller... What we're you expecting?...teleportation into the game? 🤷♂️
@jdv95 touchscreen? 😂
@Rhaoulos If it ain't broken, don't fix it!
@jdv95 I play 90% of the time with headphones and I still find the speaker very cool. The audio logs in Killzone are a good example...
But Idk the touchscreen almost doesn't work in anything.. you just press to pause
This seems cool, it's like the switch hd rumble but not useless.
@Ralizah wow, thank you for the info as I didn’t know 90% of what you told me lol 😅
I’ve never played on PC so most of this stuff is pretty arcane to me, such as the possibility of downloading from GOG and launching with Steam.
I didn’t even know launchers were a thing to be brutally honest 😂
It’s also nice to know that BL3 exclusivity is only timed.
@Ralizah oh thanks a lot, I’ll take a look even though it seems pretty complicated for me and my barebones knowledge 😅
Also, I’d rather just have one account with one store (maybe two); even if I don’t register to Epic’s store, I’m sure I’ll find plenty to play while I wait for BL3 to come to other stores 😄
I like that name DualShock 5👍🏻
I just want to hear my BB gurgle in my BRAND NEW DS PS5 ORANGE DS BB CONTROLLER!!! (CUE APPLAUSE)
I would just like a controller with a battery life more similar to the DS3 than the DS4.
So the controller is going to be just has horrible? Guess Ill be sticking with Xbox next gen too.
Good! I like the Dualshock 4 as is. Hopefully they haven't removed the 6-axis (technically they can't)
@AlexOlney There's a different between a rumble motor and haptic feedback. One uses magnets to create different pressures through vibrations. Whereas a rumble uses an actual motor to create vibrations. Nintendo's HD Rumble uses a tiny motor with different settings to create different sensations.
They're similar, but function extremely differently. Nintendo's version is an improved version of the rumble motor, whereas haptic feedback has been around for too long.
@redd214 the only devices You have? Like personally? If not that is Ludacris. My Xbox one s also shares micro USB. Hell the Wii u pro controller uses USB 2.0 like an IDIOT. So really, the switch is the only device (console) that uses USB c. Since it's the only 'new' console since 2017.
@Ptrack yes, 4 phones in my house all usb c, 4 tablets all usb c, 2 laptops usb c, 2 chromebooks USB c. 4 switches and 2 pro controllers obviously USB c. So yes the ds4 controllers are the only micro USB devices in my home. However there are obviously other things that aren't in my house but the rarely get unplugged/need to be charged.
@koaeinferno Way to troll. I have both consoles and the dual shock is far superior in terms of quality, rechargable out of the box, Bluetooth (Xbox one s has it though), and better anolog sticks, d-pad, and triggers. The only thing the Xbox controller has is better texture on the sticks. Sure, might be subjective but I don't think so. I have owned the PS4 since launch and haven't gone through the issues of my nearly 2 year old Xbox one-s. From stick drift, A-X buttons sticking and shoulder buttons not registering.. To say you'd only buy a console because of a controller is absolutely asinine. Buy a decent third party controller then ya bum.
@redd214 Gotcha. Makes more sense. I have a box full of cables ( I feel like many gamers never throw out cables unless they break, just in case we need them haha) but yes, you're right. I also have many devices that use usb-c. I do have an old 2.0 for Wii/wiiu pro controller and micro for xbox/PS4. But the same argument could be made for Apple making proprietary cables that are garbage. At least PS didn't do that nonsense. All next gen consoles will support usb-c or even the next evolution of charging when the time comes. Meanwhile, the Nintendo switches / pro that comes out in 2020-2021 will still use USB-c. while Microsoft and PS will adapt to the next level to ensure long term relevance.
@swagbag713 Not gonna happen, the light is required for motion tracking in VR.
@manu0 Lol what do you want a "controller" to be, a Wii remote and nunchuck? Idk about you but I prefer not to have to adapt to something vastly different that does the same thing I've been using for over a decade. If it's got dual analog sticks what can you really innovate that's as comfortable and practical? They already showed you'll be able to dissemble it and rearrange the sticks/buttons, and adjust the triggers sensitivity (like a scuff) when they made the jump from dual shock 3 to ds4 the controller grew exponentially, Bluetooth, touchpad, higher quality sticks, buttons, triggers, modern USB cable for 2013(micro USB) and added a share button to directly record/upload/update. How isn't that innovation? If it isn't broken, don't fix it. Just improve, upgrade, and use higher quality materials.
@GKO900 The light is necessary in some instances, though. It's how the system tracks the controller for VR. So it's not going anywhere. Plus, it's drain on the battery is almost non existent. The true power hog is the touch pad.
@Rhaoulos No need to fix what ain't broke.
@Ptrack I'm sorry if I'm sounding fanboyish. I started off with a PS4 this gen. My arthritis got so bad that the PS4 controller was barely usuable. The Xbox one controller is really the only controller that doesn't hurt to use ( Besides the Wii U Gamepad). I really wish Sony would make a controller with the Stick in the correct position too.. I love my PS3, I would also like to Play PS4 titles in comfort.
@Ptrack yes its been a decade long journey but finally everything will have the same plug in my house and I would have to spend even a second wondering if I grabbed the right cable lol.
@koaeinferno there are quite a few ps4 controllers now that have offset sticks, also you could just get a $20 adapter to use you Xbox one controller as well. Having been using a dualshock for over 2 decades i am the opposite, I actually am starting to get pain when using asymmetrical controllers. Glad there are options for everyone whichever they feel is "correct"
@redd214 have you had any luck with those adapters. I would like to get a PS4 again when they are cheap just for the Kingdom Hearts collections. ( Only 3 came out on Xbox for some reason)
@koaeinferno I used one when I briefly had an Xbone to use the Ds4/wheel and it worked great, also have used them on the Switch.
I hope the system gives us the option to set the trigger resistance to a permanent value then. I loved how springy the Xbox 360's triggers felt and I would love to be able to set the triggers to my liking. The DS4 and Xbox One controller's triggers feel weak.
@Rhaoulos you mean like they did with the PS4 controller?
Cant wait to go into an endurance race, drive into the dirt, tape down L2, and drop controller into lap....oh yeah
So.....Sony is ripping off HD rumble? Cool. Lol
Gotta love how the PS5 is still literally an insanely powerful PS1. While all their system names are lame, it's at least honest. Every new generation they essentially slap another number on the end and beef up the horsepower more...and that's it. Haha.
I'll be the first to admit that I'm a Nintendo guy more than anything but I'm not just a hater (I own a PS4 and sure adore some of the experiences I've had with it). It's just that Nintendo innovates. Nintendo changes the way we play and perceive games. I'd take that, occasional missteps and all, over just more and more raw power.
@invictus4000 i think Valve was the first to include haptic feedback
I'm just hoping they ditch that stupid battery wasting LED. Also because every time I plug it in to charge at night I end up putting something to block the light. Seriously who thought that was a good idea?
@invictus4000 I agree completely. I have played Sony since PS1 but Nintendo has always won me over more. I see Sony as the guy who puts thousands of dollars into upgrading his car to have ridiculous speed that he can never really use, while Nintendo is the guy who just cruises around town having a good time. Both companies have their benefits, there is a lot to be said for Sony's consistency.
That HD Rumble type thing sounds like it'll be taken to a whole new level when it inevitably gets put into the next gen VR controllers
So long as there's an option to turn off the light bar, I'll be happy.
Sounds like its an opportunity to charge more
@JoeBlogs
Touchpad is a waste of space. Same for the speaker on the controller
@invictus4000 that's a really unfair analogy. Here are some innovations since the 80s.
PSVR
Blu Ray
PS Move
Mini Disc
3d TV
Camera Tech
Walkman
Wonderbook
Sound system tech
And let's not forget the PS1 which saved us all dough by putting games on CD!
@Robocod
Manu was Phil?
🙅
Wonder which alt he s going to have next...
All yesterdays ps5 news seems a bit underwhelming...hope things will get better when more details about the console itself are revealed.
@Ralizah man, you're well informed! Sadly, I never game on pc, or I'd love to experiment more with what the ds4 can do. Kinda ironic that developers would lock out so many features from the games on the controller's home console...
@Applejackson75 agreed!
@themcnoisy i feel like the share button and photo mode changed the game this gen aswell. It made people more connected and invested. No one else was doing it to my knowledge in the console space. And was subsequently patched into the one - and i believe switch launched with an equivalent.
PSVR was the first commercially viable and successful mass market VR headset delivering a level of quality people could get invested in.
Honestly, as much as people say Sony simply copy other devs, people overlook what they have done to innovate in the game space. Even eye toy on PS2 was out before the wii was 'pioneering' motion controls.
And the switch learnt alot from where the vita failed, but also took alot of its ideas and concepts. Sony was the first to offer something like remote play. Yes Nintendo have delivered it more effectively with switch - but they have the benefit of 8 years of technological advances
@invictus4000 if your happy playing games handheld or on a HD ready tv from 10 years ago then Nintendo is the brand for you. My 7 year old loves Nintendo and I like them too but innovation for innovations sake is not always better. Why reinvent the wheel if the wheel works really well, that’s why everything always comes back to a tv a console and a controller because it has always been the best way to play.
@Rob_230 Thanks for the support. Im not knocking Nintendo at all but for me they really need some extra power. Mario odyssey looks great on a TV but it's very plastic looking. As for the innovations, Nintendo uses a ton of old tech and repurposes it (the power glove - wii motion controls spring to mind). Using cardboard cut outs and obviously regurgitating the same few franchises. But I'm glad they are around and my son has a switch. Sony is better for me for sure!
@Fuzzymonkeyfunk this is just it. I love psvr Astrobot and Statik sit in first and fourth place in my best games this generation. However its inconvenient with kids and sometimes you just want to chill with a coffee after work and play a couple of levels without being immersed. Console, TV, gamepad. Perfection.
As long as the rubber on the analogue sticks doesn't tear off instantly I'm happy. Both of the early ps4 controllers that were bought with the system had it's rubber worned down quickly.
How about you just put some extra buttons on it, get rid of all the battery draining crap, and give us a controller that we only have to charge once a week.
this is so cool! either I'ma get a 5 or a 4pro
NO! Where is the touch screen? Other than the worlds largest pause button, the touch pad is bloody useless. A touch screen could mend every issue players have with strategy games in one go.
Release it separately even, I'll buy it!
