Beyond Two Souls

November is finally here, the month in which Sony's next generation console is set to be unleashed in North America and Europe. The anticipation is becoming almost unbearable, but PlayStation's promising future hasn't stopped us from glancing back into its past to decide upon which of October's releases deserves our coveted Game of the Month accolade.

Beyond: Two Souls may not have been on the receiving end of universal praise, but it clearly did something right to spirit its way to victory over last month's fierce competition. "This is still a game that you should experience irrespective of its flaws," an impressed Sammy Barker concluded. The title's "outrageously ambitious subject matter" and "staggering technological achievements" earned it a great score of 8/10 in our review.

Surprisingly, Quantic Dream's PlayStation 3 swansong wasn't our highest rated October release, as Telltale Games' latest narrative-driven comic book adaptation The Wolf Among Us: Episode 1 - Faith was left howling at the moon in triumph. Sporting a story that's "as disturbing and shocking as it is gripping", our resident Video Editor Ben Potter summoned his inner beast and slapped a 9/10 on the series' initial instalment.

Elsewhere, scores of 8/10 were dealt out like delicious sweets on Hallowe'en night, with atmospheric PSN title Rain, stunningly beautiful brawler Dragon's Crown, and the shanty-singing Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag all settling for top-tier candy. This particular author was enthralled with Vanillaware's gorgeous creation, stating that "for an action RPG, this release has it all", while our Editor developed a bit of a soft spot for Captain Edward Kenway, writing that the Welsh protagonist is "an excellent character, and is brilliantly acted". Better watch your back, Ezio.

Unfortunately, you have to take the tricks with the treats, and so we egged Skydive: Proximity Flight and Orc Attack: Flatulent Rebellion with scores of 4/10. Thankfully, the Batman's costume hasn't quite lost its edge just yet, meaning that Batman: Arkham Origins stealthily avoided a similar yolk-filled splattering, appearing from the shadows to claim a solid 7/10.

Do you agree with our choice, or do you think that we're too sweet on Ellen Page?
