Sony’s big GamesCom press conference brought plenty of huge announcements this evening, but the platform holder ended with an appropriate show-stopper, confirming that the PlayStation 4 will launch on 15th November in North America and 29th November in Europe. Considering that the rumours pointed to an October launch, we can’t help but feel a little disappointed.
SCE president Andrew House made the announcement, reconfirming that the console will cost £349.99/$399.99. The well-spoken gaffer even took a moment to take a swipe at the Xbox One, stating that the manufacturer’s stuck to its original vision throughout the pre-release period. But will the late release date give Microsoft time to pip the Japanese giant to the post? Let us know in the comments section below.

I'm a little bit gutted at that, to be honest. I think they needed to get it out sooner.
Oh hell yeah!!! Not a bad date since it is on a Friday!!
Sony forever!!!!
cant wait for November 15 man i hope i dont have exams around that time =(
@get2sammyb Yeah it does give room for XB1 to launch before it but oh well. At least we have a date!
@get2sammyb Same here... I thought begin of september. And why o why does Europe always to be late...
2 weeks before Black Friday so - everybody will be in a shopping mood and they have time for a couple of more shipments by Black Friday.
I dont think the late date matters to much based on pre-oders there wont be a lot on shelves no matter when they launch.
@rjejr That is true. On a more personal note, the two week difference is going to be a nightmare for us on this site...
Lack of AAA vita games has me in such a foul mood lol
I think it's good. If they launched it any sooner people wouldn't be able to find them for the Holiday Shopping season.
I was very surprised, I thought Oct for sure.
The EU date has knocked the wind out of me.
@get2sammyb - Yeah I'll admit it sucks for you guys, Nov 29 seems late, I was just focused on the US date. People in the US have Black Friday circled on their calendars, its literally insane and death defying. If the zombie apocalypse starts on BF nobody would notice.
I suggest buying a Wii U and W101 to kill time, you get that 3 weeks before us.
Gonna go pay mine off at Gamestop soon. I'll be sure to let all you Europeans know how cool and fun it is on here that morning : ))))))))))))))
would have been nice if it went world wide at the same time
Not a bad date if you ask me. Sure Microsoft now has a chance to get out ahead of them, but if the PS4's pre-orders remain consistent, then it won't matter.
I would have preferred for it to launch on the 13th, but I was going to end up buying it as a late birthday present to myself anyway, so it all works out.
@rjejr Pikmin 3 ^^?
@rjejr Yeah anyone who lives in the US knows how insane Black Friday is, just look up YouTube videos and especially if you are there in person. Actually it's no longer Black Friday, it's Black Thursday...lol
Perfect date, plenty of time to save up for my amazon preorder.
The date doesn't particularly matter so long as its around about the same time as the Xbone, after all they can't lose gain any more Market share than they have consoles, they will still both be sold out day one. Besides 29th is fine with me, still before the Christmas holidays
all i care about is that i dont need my xbox copy of bl2 anymore. since my vita gets it soon
I was hoping for October as well but at least now I know exactly how long I have to pay off my pre-order (would like to get it done about two weeks before the system launches). Be interesting to see when MS releases the Xbox One, I could see it beating Sony to the market and that would be very bad for the latter given how much better X1's lineup is.
I'd prefer October but I'm excited either way!
@SuperSilverback
There's a startling lack of AAA games coming from Sony's first party which has me very nervous and while it is getting most of the big third party games, so is Xbox One with the latter getting a lot of exclusive deals. And while I like indie games as much as anybody, Sony needs realize, fast, that indie games aren't the only thing a console needs to make it a success. While MS has been dropping bombs left and right Sony seems content to just sit there, announce indie games that the mass market couldn't care less about and take cheap shots at MS. It was funny at E3, it's getting old now that MS has woken up. Time for the people at Sony to start getting serious again.
@rjejr yeah I think thats the key@get2sammyb
Launch earlier or later by a few weeks on either platform and it all amounts to the same thing: insufficient stock. At least launching later means a small possibility of a decent showing on the shelves, but even that won't matter. It will be sold day one.
@Gamer83 Those games are coming, though, Sony's just saving the ammunition. Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, etc, aren't sitting twiddling their thumbs. They can pull the trigger whenever necessary.
@get2sammyb This. It is so ingorant to think that sony the company of the big three console makers with the best and biggest first party studios is going to just release 4 first party games. They announced
That are 4 games. Sony has 12 studios. These studios have seperate teams ND got 2 teams.. Santa monica has three teams now with the director of god of war 2 joining. That could be a lot of games. Quantic dreams almost a first party studio in my eyes will show more for the playstation 4.
Sony would be so much better off if they weren't supporting 3 different platforms. To be honest sometimes I wish they could just ditch the PS3 and Vita and put all the focus on PS4 and truly take us into the next gen. Sometimes with Sony I feel like they're trying to move into the future but are still clinging to the past trying to provide support for everyone. That sounds noble and all, but when you have a hot new product you should be going in for the kill. Mark my words, that is Sony's biggest weakness right now.
@ajaychitown I get what you're saying, but I bet people who can't afford a next-gen console this Christmas don't agree. Besides, I suspect we're going to see The Last of Us, Beyond, GT6 on PS4 eventually, anyway.
@get2sammyb
Well they better get off their a$$es and announce something from these studios soon. Enough saving the ammunition. After what I saw today and looking over MS' day-one X1 lineup, I'm starting to regret jumping the gun on the PS4 pre-order rather than giving MS a chance to make up for the One reveal and E3 because since then MS has been doing everything right and Sony seems content to do nothing but say 'well, we don't have many AAA games right now, but here's a bunch of small indie games.' I'm getting tired of it. Like I said, I like something like Hotline Miami as much as the next guy, and more than most mass consumers, but it doesn't replace a Halo, or a Splinter Cell, GTA or Naughty Dog production. It's extremely annoying that Sony lets MS just waltz in there and nab Dead Rising 3 and rather than striking back with say a timed-exclusive on MGS 5, it sits back and does nothing. Sony needs to give me something more and soon, I'm paying $400 for this console, not exactly chump change, especially in this economy. Even just an announcement of Syphon Filter for PS4 would've made me feel a little better today.
@Gamer83 you find xb1's lineup to be substantially better? I'm surprised. I prefer Sony's, but am open to someone preferring xb1's... Yet by a large margin?
@Visiblemode
By a large margin. Like you, I'm open to somebody feeling differently, this is just my opinion, but I feel that X1's library is better by enough that I'd be willing to pay the extra $100. If MS had just focused on the strength of its library and not tried putting in all those stupid policies like always-on and the Kinect requirement, I'd probably have the X1 on pre-order right now instead of PS4.
@ajaychitown
110% agree, the PS3 has had its time in the sun, it got a nice final game from Naughty Dog in The Last of Us and it could be sent off for good with Beyond: Two Souls. A game like GT 6 though, the next in Sony's biggest franchise has absolutely no business NOT launching on PS4, no need for a PS3 version at all. That's where MS is smart, 360 had its run, it's still getting some great cross-gen stuff from third parties so it's not going to be a totally useless platform, and that's the way Sony should be looking at PS3. Let third parties continue to support it, but top first party games like, I don't know, the one in your company's best selling franchise, should be launching your new platform, period.
@Gamer83 Haha, if you feel like that, perhaps it would be worth jumping ship. You can always get a PS4 when the big boys come out to play - which you know as well as I do, they will!
@get2sammyb
Nah, I already have the PS4 on pre-order and will get it day one, there's no guarantee I'd be able to get an X1 right away so I'm just going to stick with my current plan. PS4 now and X1 later when Halo 5 hits hopefully bundled with a nice Halo themed console.
Actually in 29-11 I may have saved the 400 euros. I seriously think to preorder the PS4 if I find it. Some major local retailers claim that they finished preordering. I don't think that it will that hard to find one in the shelves in the release date on the whole city of Athens though. I am not sure what I should do.
very cool, definitely want one, and I want one of the DS4 Red controllers November 15th isn't that long off, i'll be ready with money by then
Hello I new here not really(been here for months) but as a member my opinion is that I saw the date for the PS4 and I still excited and at the same time disappointed over the due time. Regardless I see some people on here are disappointed over the Gamescom PS meeting and stating that Xbone meeting was better but that wasn't true. Both meeting's didn't surprise me much but as a gamer I'm much in evaluation of Sony than xbox when it comes to opinion of games and I can trust my fate of games and the systems and Sony can show some amazing stuff. With Tokyo Game Show coming around the corner I hope Sony can show us some AAA titles then.
@Gamer83 wow, what games really do it for you in xb1's exclusive launch library? If you don't mind me asking.
@get2sammyb yeah, I think the concept of abandoning old hardware is weak to begin with. It says "buy this machine, we'll support it till we're ready to sell you a new one." When I buy a Sony product, which I always do, I know it'll keep delivering for years and years. Late cycle titles are often the best anyway. Why are some so eager to bury their PS3s? I'm so excited about next gen not in spite of this gen but because of this gen. Know what I mean?
Now I know what day to request off from work.
I think release date is perfect. Will give me some time 2 play the last PS3 games I plan on purchasing Batman and Beyond Two Souls.
@Tasuki took the words out of my mouth.
I'm a little disappointed in the release date of November 15th, but it's only because I'm so excited to get my hands on the system. I was hoping for October as well, but my birthday is on November 21st, so it will be a nice present to myself.
@Visiblemode
Well, I'll just do a semi-break down of both libraries... Each has got all the big third party games but MS has exclusive content for the most important ones in CoD, Battlefield and Fifa then there's exclusives, timed or otherwise, in Dead Rising 3, Forza 5, Lococycle and Crimson Dragon. Sony's exclusives are Killzone and Drive Club. I expect both will be great, but Forza 5 is going to be the best racing game of the year for any console and though I think Killzone will be the best FPS, one game doesn't offset 4. I know it's all a matter of perspective so fine if you disagree, just saying for me, the X1 lineup pretty much destroys PS4's.
While I was over all happy with the conference (although a few more exclusives for PS4 wouldn't have hurt), I felt the "late" launch date for PS4 was kind of a sucker punch...sorry, couldn't resist the pun.
@Gamer83 yeah, don't get me wrong dude, I'm not trying to tell you you're wrong, just want to understand your perspective.
For me it's different. I like racers in doses. So I'll get hooked on one every few years then burn out. (No pun intended) So no big ones at launch isn't troubling. Besides DC and GT6 will probably fill any gaps.
I've never played dead rising games. They don't seem overly great. The zombie thing has to be razor sharp to get me hooked these days(the last of us for example).
Ryse seems beautiful but like 100% qte.
The other smaller games are sort of a toss up with the psn offerings.
Your list didn't mention Knack...it's an underdog for a lot of people, but Japan Studio is no joke.
Again, you're entitled to your opinion but I don't see a super strong exclusivity situation yet. Also, on that front, with MS it's mostly 3rd parties and think: Mass Effect. They usually make it to other systems. Sony on the otherhand you know has tons of first party stuff cooking.
I don't see how anyone can be disappointed in PS4's lineup. You will have plenty of games to play when the consoles launches . If you really like XB1's library over PS4's then get a XB1. If you want more AAA or first party titles just give Sony some time this is a launch year. We have TGS around the corner and anything can be announced between now and launch day. Did anyone see the Minecraft announcement coming?? No. Some of the popular titles announced for XB1 are not going to available at launch anyways. Everyone knew that GC was going to be focused on Vita so I am not surprised to see very little on the PS4. I was surprised in the amount of indie games though. Don't forget E3 2014 is coming next year so they have to save some ammo for that as well. I don't expect any company to blow their load before launch. In the end, just sit back, relax, end enjoy some games. You will have access to plenty of games no matter which console you go with. I have my PS4 already on order and I am perfectly happy with that. This gen I came in with an open mind and I gave XB1 a good look but it doesn't appeal to me and I feel the PS4 is right for me and I like the direction they are going.
My PS4 was pre order in February after the event and my friends was pre in March, so I should be sure to get one
I don't think the late release date in EU means a lot, since Microsoft ain't releasing before 2014 in majority of them + Sony have major Japanese players like NIS, Compile Hearts and Level-5.
