I didn't like galaxy much, the collecting stars with the pointer and the odd nunchuck control scheme. I loved sunshine and the fludd was a great extension of the proven Mario 64 mechanics. I thought Delfino was a great place to bounce around, with Galaxy I was running on balls. Sunshine was loads better than galaxy.

Honestly I prefer 2D Marios to 3D with the exception of 3D Land and World.
I couldn't agree more. I'd rather play Super Mario World than any other Mario game ever made. That said, I love the design of 3D Land and 3D World, with 3D Land being my personal favourite of the two.
My game library ranges from Mario Kart to Call of Duty to Tales of Xillia to Diablo 3 to Forza. To me gaming is about having fun - not blindly supporting only one company while thumbing your nose at "the evil other systems."
Sunshine is a game I really need to play. It definitely has a lot of mixed views, so that's why it intrigues me so much. As of now, Super Mario Galaxy is my favorite game. Period. Kind of funny considering I'm more of a PlayStation guy than a Nintendo fan!
With that said, I'm pretty sure I'd end up not agreeing with you (I basically love everything you mentioned that you don't like ), but I shouldn't say that since I haven't played Sunshine for myself. I'll get to it one day since it sounds fun!
I loved Super Mario Sunshine! I still have my Gamecube disc for it so I play it on the Wii the odd time, but I don't have a memory card.. Might have to buy one. But yeah, back to the topic, I enjoyed Galaxy too, but Sunshine was far better IMO.
. Buy a memory card, from memory sunshine only takes up one block, unlike aggressive inline which took the whole memory card.

Sunshine was a great game (with fantastic music) but would never live up to what came before it or after. Galaxy and it's sequel are just sheer perfection. For ten years Super Mario 64 was my favourite game ever made, nothing made came even close to being equal to it, let alone better. Then Galaxy came, followed by it's sequel. You can give me any brilliant game over the last eighteen years - and there have been loads - but they won't compare to those three Mario games for me. I honestly don't think anything ever will.
As for Sunshine. Although I love it there are many problems with it. Mario feels wrong, the camera (for a Nintendo game) is shocking, there's too much repetition, F.L.U.D.D. - while fun - limits what you can do immensely and is never enhanced more, Bowser Jr is in it, Bowser actually talks and has the most ridiculously stupid American accent (PS, it's Ma-ree-oh, not Mar-ee-oo) and the best part of the game (the throwback platform stages) are far too few. Great game, but too many things stop it from being amazing for me.
I also felt a little deflated by Galaxy. It's not a bad game, it just felt like a very linear game trying to disguise the fact that it was. I loved 64 and Sunshine because there was a more open sensation within levels. Sunshine was doing something completely different with Mario and I loved the different direction it took (even if Bowser's voice was silly and the last boss was ridiculously easy!).
But Galaxy does have it's moments. One of the touches I liked best was Rosalina's back story. It was really sad and touching and I would've loved for Nintendo to develop her further as a character, but they never did...
Whilst Galaxy has some great flourishes, it's difficulty was too easy and it's overall vibe just fell a little flat for me. Which is a shame as I wish I loved it!
I played Sunshine after the two galaxies, so of course I was in for a rude awakening. The camera is terrible (64's is too, but arguably that was the first 3D game, so it is understandable), FLUDD is interesting but Yoshi is a waste, as you cannot get him wet in an island, where you see water everywhere, and the Fluddless stages are way too frustrating because Mario does not even have a long jump or spin/flutter. And of course the voice acting...
From what I have read, people who love Sunshine are the ones who played it as their first (3D) Mario game.
I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.
I thought Super Mario Sunshine was pretty good at the time, but Super Mario Galaxy was the pinnacle of the Super Mario 64-style structure. For me, Sunshine is good, but Galaxy is just on a different planet. Then again, Galaxy is on a different planet to pretty much all games.
Hard choosing between the exploration 3D Mario games, I like 64 for how fun it is to speedrun but I enjoy how Sunshine just plays with the FLUDD but then I like how majestic Galaxy felt. Galaxy probably the one I've played most start to finish just because how fantastic it was from start to finish so if I had to choose Galaxy.
I prefer Sunshine as well. It's probably my favourite Mario game. It has probably the best HUB world of all games I have ever played, Galaxy's Observatory was a little disappointing after Delfino Plaza, but that Mario ship from Galaxy 2 was downright terrible. Anyway, I loved how they managed to create all the different worlds, whilst keeping everything in line with the tropical island theme. Every world felt very different, it takes a lot of creativity to make that work. Isle Delfino felt like a place that could be real in a sense, an island I could imagine myself actually going to, I think that made it a little more special. Never had a problem with the camera, but being used to 64's camera, the one in Sunshine felt a lot better.
2D Mario all the way. But 3D Land and 3D World are nice too.
I agree. As much hate as the New Mario Bros series gets, I prefer those games over the Galaxy games any day of the week. I will add though that I did enjoy 3D Land. I still need to play World.

@Octane: Yup absolutely this. I never understood the hate. I personally believe the reviewers struggled with some of the early missions and gave up on the game. I was delighted at the level of challenge due to it costing a few quid. I remember a level where Mario is hanging and travelling over monkey bar style amd the camera changed suddenly and you fell off, it was after a good while moving up through a level - with up being the way you needed to go. That was frustrating but other than that the game was excellent.

Sunshine was HARD as nails at times, but overall a darn great game with a great theme and personality.
I still have to complete SMG 1 and 2, thank's for reminding me of them
