I just love the system, its lineup is so weird and unique with plenty of gems. Plus, Technologically the thing is a marvel, it makes look the 3ds 2 generations behind. I love it and I am going to collect all the best games it has, keeping and playing it for years to come.

@arnoldlayne83: My sentiments exactly. There are a boat ton of great games on this system and as someone who travels around the world a lot, it's great to take with me as I can't cart a console around. People be-cry it for being a JRPG and indie machine, but hot damn, that's what I love about it

If you are a fan of handheld systems, both are great to own, each with their own benefits. But I'm with you on both systems. I'm keeping them both and will play them for many years.

@General_Spiller: Yes, and I can say (owning ps4, WiiU, 3ds and Vita) it has the most peculiar game library of the bunch. As you said, great indies, tons of Japanese games (that you won't find anywhere else here in the West) and very good exclusives.
Plus, by the fact that the market is not so big here for the console, you can get a lot of physical copies very cheap (below 30 bucks, sometimes even 5). Problem is that sometimes I have to struggle around before I find the game I want (like Persona4, it took me 4 Gamestops and other 2 shops before I found a copy).

@mr_snout: yes you are right. both are great. But lately, I generally grew bored of Nintendo games.... after wii->WiiU + 3ds I can't stand all this "teletubbies" sceneries and colors anymore...

Nintendo is still my staple. I love Smash, MK8 and Streetpass on 3ds. But I can see how things start looking and feeling the same. The Vita was an impulse buy for me, after I saw it for $169 on Amazon with borderlands. I've always loved handhelds, even tho I hadn't really kept up with technology save a GBA back in 2002 or so. So, I just took the plunge with the Vita recently. Love the hardware, and while it doesn't have the endearing games that Nintendo has, I am pleased with the offerings so far.

Quoted for truth.

I've had all Ninendo handhelds since the Gameboy Advance. Had a PSP once as well. All sold really quickly because it just didn't click.
Except the 3DS, my daughter plays that one once in a while.
Waited a while because of that for with buying the Vita, and the insane price of the mem cards, but with the posstive buzz about Persona 4 Golden, and the fact Plus had some great games every month, I decided to give handhelds one more chance.
Fell in love with the Vita immediately. Never gonna sell this baby!
(heh, I even bought a second one with also OLED, just in case mine breaks or something...but it was cheap via a gamebuddy who rarely used it...plastic foil was still on the screen!)

The Vita is a great and underrated system and I've been enjoying the hell out of it! It's not for everyone though. If you like indie games, anime games, JRPGs, PSP games and PS1 games, then you can't go wrong with it.

I enjoy it much more than my 3DS, which has largely disappointed me and feels really outdated, despite having a more diverse library than the Vita. The only thing I can think of that I don't like about the Vita is the proprietary memory cards being so expensive, but once you bite the bullet (get a 64Gb card), it's an overall better system with the majority of its games cheaper than the 3DS.

If there was a device that was the same size and shape of the Vita but played PC games, I would buy it in an instant. The Vita is a very well designed handheld and it would be a shame if Sony refused to have another go at a dedicated handheld system. If it's marketed properly, anything can succeed.

I've recently bought a Nvidia Shield Portable, granted, they are hard to find now, although reportedly Nvidia has been working on a follow up since May, but reguardless..........it's a much better designed piece of kit than the Vita, all the buttons, the flip down screen, etc. Just from a hardware design aspect solely, it trumps Sony and Nintendo.

Great battery life as well.

@sub12: I'm under the impression its gonna take a few more iterations to be worthwhile and nvidia has not got the time. from research last year after i got my vita its too under powered only playing indie games and early last gen games well. I read a terrible review on half life 2 performance. Been keeping tabs on it as I prefer the screen position for gaming. But if its good let me know šŸ˜Š

@Tasuki, I've heard of that device before, will wait for reviews and details on battery life before taking the plunge. $299 (or the UK equivalent) seems quite steep but if the battery is good then I'm cool with that. Good to see it finally getting a release date.

Yeah hopefully it has a good battery life. I am keeping my eye on this as well.

It's a good system and I prefer its library to PS4's so far, I think. There are a few changes I'd make if ever there was a third model (3000):

  • cheaper ($140 - $160)
  • cheaper memory cards (and sell 64gb model in U.S.)
  • built in 8gb of memory which stacks with memory card
  • better wifi (if possible)
  • no cameras (save money)
  • online advertising (sell it primarily through mail order)
  • that's about it. It's good as it is. Though a better screen would be preferable at times (better black levels and contrast - but the IPS screen is has currently is pretty good)

I think it could be marketed a little more toward its recent game catalogue of indies and anime titles and the box art could reflect that, just as it does in Japan (at least with anime). It could have promotional tie-ins with a Crunchyroll app built in or something like that. PS Now could come pre-installed. There's some changes I'd make to to the store and system software, but not much (like clean up the Download List and make that easier to use). Otherwise it's a pretty good system.

@stalepie: To be fair the original models had a much better screen than the slim. So glad I managed to grab one before they stopped selling them!

From 16/08/15 Iā€™m going for sober for six months to raise money for the Princess Alice Hospice. Donations can be made here and anything you can offer is greatly appreciated: https://www.justgiving.com/Stephen-Butler5

Wish me luck!

I can say that the slim, apart being smaller and lighter, has an amazing battery life. Stand by stays for days (a week for me), and playing even intense sessions doesn't kill the battery.... it is a near perfect system for commuting.
