Topic: Are You Getting PS4 Neo?

I imagine that just about every active member hear has heard of ps4 neo. The upcoming higher end ps4 that natively supports 4k media and will boast better visual and technical performance. However it's just that, a better ps4. They'll share the same online, same Os, same controller, same game library.(for now....) So will you get one?

I plan to get it and a cheap 4k TV next year with my tax refund.

As anyone who has seen my posts on thee subject, of course I will be getting one.I already have a 55" 4K HDR TV but even if I didn't, as a gamer, I want the best visual experience and highest, most consistent frame rates I can from a console. It appeals far more than VR does at the moment and it will benefit more of the games I am looking forward to and/or intend to buy. The thought of playing Horizon: Zero Dawn at over 1080p, a game I think looks incredible anyway, is just an added bonus. Knowing I won't have to play games at 900-720p - upscaled to 1080p by the PS4 and then upscaled to 4k by my TV is great. I have an XB1 so know how the lower native pixel count becomes far more apparent when upscaled to 4k.

Obviously the 'resolution' itself doesn't change the 'game' and how it plays. Hopefully though we will see more consistent frame rates - far fewer drops below the 'target'. Maybe even a few games with higher 60fps frame rates. Maybe less texture pop-in, screen tears etc too.

So yes I will be buying it!!

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

Feel free to add me but please send a message so I know where you know me from...

@WebHead: There is upgrades and 'upgrades'. Buying a 'slim' that doesn't add 'anything significant' to the way you use something is not worth upgrading to in my opinion - just throwing money away in my opinion. If you don't use a camera on a mobile for example, upgrading to one with a slightly higher MP camera but essentially the same is pointless. This is in part how I feel about the XB1s. I only bought a PS3 slim because my original PS3 60GB Phat ended up YLOD.

PS4 can't exactly shed the size down and just adding 4K streaming (something my TV offers anyway) or a 4k HDR Bluray when I haven't bought a movie/box set etc for years isn't enough of a reason to upgrade in my opinion. I use my console(s) for 1 purpose - gaming! If the experience is 'virtually identical', then what's the point? HDR in games is 'nice' but will the wider colour range and greater contrast ratio highlight the lack of native pixels, showcase the jaggies/screen tear etc?

I know it maybe dividing opinion, but I much prefer the fact that Sony are looking at 'game' performance for those that have a 4k screen. As I said, I know what 900p and 720p games look like on a 4k screen when upscaled to fit. I do think that 900p on a 1080p screen isn't as bad as on a 4k screen because of the percentage difference of native pixels (900p is around 75% native on a 1080p compared to about 18% on a 4K screen!

MS's XB1s only benefits those with a 4k HDR TV (not every 4k TV has HDR) and game visuals - although scaled up to 4k, are certainly not going to be as impressive as upscaled yo 1080p - that's a lot less stretching! The PS4 Neo benefits those with a 4K TV as well as though with 1080p TV's!!

I'm not a fan of spending a lot of money, so I wasn't really happy when news of the Neo broke. I don't look forward to getting the console in that regard as I'd rather enjoy my PS4 until 2020 or so. On the other hand: I hate the loud fan of my PS4 and it's really hard to resist the next step in video game graphics.

So, where do I stand? After my summer holiday I am probably going to save up money for a Neo. I will await the console's first reviews and decide by then.

@BAMozzy: plus I have a feeling come 2017 we will be seeing less native 1080p and/or 60 fps base ps4 games.

Never. Almost all the PS4 games I'm interested in wouldn't benefit from the upgrade anyhow.

@Kidfried: If you are happy with the PS4, the quality and standard of the games, then there is little reason to upgrade - especially if you don't have a 4k TV and not looking for 4k Media options. Yes it will still enhance games and output to 1080p if connected to a HD TV but its a bit over-powered for that at the moment considering the power needed to run games at 1080/60.

As games get 'bigger' or push new technology, chances are you will see a 'decline' in visual standards to maintain the level of game-play - more and more games releasing at 900p instead of hitting 1080p on PS4. AAA games already require 'minimum' specs that exceed the PS4 by quite a margin and with even more power in the hands of developers, its going to be increasingly difficult to get the games developed with this 'running' at acceptable levels. I am not buying the Neo with the expectation it will not be 'replaced' as the most powerful Playstation for 5+yrs but fully expect a 'PS5' within 2-3yrs because it is limited by the vanilla PS4. Obviously you could ride it out for the next couple of years and just go for the PS5 and not miss out on any games/features etc.

I don't have a PS4 yet, my plan was to have one by now but now I'm waiting for the Neo announcements based on the details as to what Neo is and its pricing I'll decide whether I get Neo or a regular PS4

I'm ready for an upgrade i'm happy with my PS4 but personaly i've been a little dissapointed with what it's had to offer over the last 12 month's, i'm ready to take the next step in console's.

@xMEADx: Its still going to offer 'exactly' the same as the PS4 has so far and its 'not' the next step in consoles. The next 12 months will still be the same titles, the same 'experiences' etc regardless of whether you own a PS4 or Neo. The only difference will be in the performance of these games. If you want to play all the upcoming PS4 games, you don't need to buy a Neo as it will not be getting any exclusive content or features. If you want to 'virtually' guarantee (obviously nothing can be guaranteed) 'every' game will be at least 1080p (games like Battlefield 1 for example is 900p on the PS4) as the developer guidelines state that if connected to a 1080p TV, the game must be at 1080p but if you have a 4k TV, you will get higher native resolutions. Frame rates could be the same or better. That doesn't mean every game will be 60fps but what it means is that frame rates cannot be worse - suffer more dips. They could be more stable of course (locked) but cannot be lower or worse.

If you own a 1080p TV and happy with the performance of games, not bothered if a game runs at 900p instead of 1080p for example and with games like Doom running at 1080/60 anyway (chances are the frame rate and resolution would be locked to these as opposed to dipping below 60fps and/or having 'dynamic' resolution to prevent 'big dips') you won't see any difference at all. The 4k media options will not benefit you either. Its unclear as to whether or not a 30fps game will get a 60fps 'Neo' version guaranteed on a 1080p TV as a 'Neo' version if they scale the resolution up to 1800p (as the Guidelines indicate this is the preferred 'minimum' for Sony) for 4k TV's. Looking at games like Horizon, God of War, Days Gone etc for example, these are all 30fps games on PS4. Its possible that the developers could increase the frame rate to 60fps but I doubt they could boost the resolution to 1800p as well. It will be interesting to see how they handle this situation. As a gamer, I would prefer 1080/60 to 1800/30 every time. It looks like Sony would prefer that games are 'downsampled' to 1080p for those with HDTV's rather than have 2 different settings for 'Neo' modes - one for 1080p TV's and one for 4k TV's. Personally I would prefer the option to select where the performance boost is applied - for example either choose to boost the frame rate to 60fps but limit the native resolution to 1080p (or even 1200p) OR select a 'higher' visual experience but lock the frame rate to 30fps in these games.

Whatever they decide though, you won't need to buy a Neo to play any games/features etc that can't or won't also be available on PS4.

Probably not. I don't even have a 4K TV yet. I depends on how the much of a visual difference there is though. Still that money could also be spend on a different console or 8-10 games. I think I'm choosing either of the latter options before the NEO.

@Octane: Pretty much this.

I would only buy a Neo if my PS4 breaks, but even then I would probably take a look at Nintendos next console or start finishing games on the vita.
