Re: Poll: Does the Steam Machine Pose a Threat to PS5?

trestan

There are a lot of benefits, no reason to mention them again, but this will be a very niche product, more than Steam Deck is.

1. It is a PC first and foremost. it will never be as plug and play as PS5 or Switch.

2. It plays PC games over a compatibility layer, if there is no Linux native version. Most of them unoptimized for the device.

4. You have issues, plug a keyboard and mouse and be ready to troubleshoot.

5. It does not support any game with kernel-level anti-cheat, and the most popular multiplayer titles have.

6. No retail presence, like Steam Deck. You can find PS and Switch consoles and games in every retailer across the world. People aware of this device are only hardcore gamers, so the market is really limited.

7. A bit more technical matter. It baffles me that Steam OS is based on Arch Linux, which targets enthusiasts and is the most bleeding edge Linux distribution. I don't know how they handle updates for Steam OS, but for Arch and Arch-based distributions many times they release broken updates.

It may compete with the next Xbox, but there is no chance Gabecube or Steam Desk to compete with the juggernauts PlayStation and Nintendo are. YouTubers create a lot of noise around these devices, but will never reach the levels of user-friendliness and presence the 2 have. Switch 2 surpassed Deck's sales within a couple of weeks. PS6 will do the same.

Re: Yep, PlayStation's PC Games Will Be Playable on Xbox's New Handheld System

trestan

/facepalm.... as many mentioned, this is a PC handheld with a XBox sticker. Check you sister site on what you can play on it https://www.purexbox.com/guides/what-games-can-you-play-on-the-rog-xbox-ally-handheld There is nothing special or extra from a "simple" ROG Ally. Game Pass for PC, not XBox. Your Xbox games only in there are "play anywhere". There is a high chance games you have purchased not being playable. Really low effort from MS to enter a niche market. They market the new UI overlay, but I bet it will be available in other devices sooner or later. It may trick people into buying it and dominate this specific expensive market of ~5-6m devices...

Re: Rumour: Greek God of War Game Is a 2.5D Metroidvania

trestan

Sorry to burst the bubble, but GoW (the last 2 at least that I have played) have many Metroidvania elements. Metroidvania games are not necessarily 2D, the concept works fine on 3D. So these news are no surprise for me, and add some variety in PS library

Re: Poll: Which Bethesda RPG Needs an Oblivion-Style Remaster Next?

trestan

@Rich33 I can tolerate some performance issues on a good game, oblivion was never a good game thought. Outdated gameplay since original release. It’s also unforgivable to not fix bugs from the original, when modders done it. Modders made Bethesda a worse company, as they rely on them to fix stuff

Re: Expedition 33's Sublime Success Sparks Chatter About Final Fantasy's Future

trestan

@somnambulance we millennials are nostalgia driven morons…we’ll throw away money to anything feeds our nostalgia and supposedly return us back to these golden years. We’ll pay almost full price for cheap soulless bug ridden remasters, yes looking at you TES IV, and won’t support progress and innovation. Apart from a couple of games, most FF have excellent battle systems. But for some reason, holding X is better because that’s how it was

Re: Expedition 33's Sublime Success Sparks Chatter About Final Fantasy's Future

I struggle to understand what these “fans” are asking. If you are an FF fan, you have to accept this is a series that constantly innovates, sometimes works some others not. Turn based, ATB, Gambit, hybrid, full action, materia, job systems and goes on. Every single entry is different, and that’s the beauty of the series. We loved the great ones, we loved the quirky ones, some more some less. Going back to turn based does not guarantee success. I think true fans didn’t like it after SE lost it a bit during PS3 era. MMOs, too much of Fabula Nova Crystalis games, but this won’t change by returning back to turn based. Story, characters, party build are more important

Re: Hidetaka Miyazaki 'Knows for a Fact' FromSoftware Devs Want a Bloodborne PC Port

trestan

@get2sammyb it's a bit strange situation here. Bluepoint can do it, and I think they done a great job with Demon Souls, but quite a few people were vocal that something was amiss from the atmosphere, art etc. Bloodborne being a larger IP, do they give to Bluepoint and risk or they just wait when the resources are available from From to commit to the project? I still think/hope they do not remake it, but rather strike a deal to develop 2 and just do a quick remaster for PS5 and PC to get people hooked. I don't think Sony does not like money, or having a specific issue with this IP to be on PC. I think they care a lot more lately for PC ports done right. Latest PC releases have been exceptional.

Re: Sea of Thieves Reportedly a 'Key Test' for More Xbox Games on PS5

trestan

@gymratAmarillo tried it years ago just because of the pirate theme, never clicked. single player is almost unplayable but an option. also can't really continue from where you left, it's like a new generated world every time you login. only enjoyed the sailing part and water physics.

BTW, why they call this XBOX exclusive? I got it on Steam, and doesn't need a MS client to play, just an account

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth?

trestan

I appreciate a bit of help with Rebirth, as I cannot find a straight answer. I'm currently replaying Remake in hard mode, and still haven't played the DLC and Crisis Core. Seeing Zack having a role in Rebirth, is it essential to play the DLC and Crisis Core? I launched Rebirth and closed it after 2 minutes, as I thought I'm missing something from the new story. Have played original like 10 times since '97, but I want to experience this as new, and I feel playing them before Rebirth is essential somehow.

Re: Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's Graphical Problems Are Clear in Digital Foundry Report

trestan

Tired of hearing all these "WE NEED PS5 PRO" comments. SE and Japanese in general are notoriously for either poorly optimising graphics or scaling down. The focus is on gameplay, and guess what, they are great at it. PRO won't fix anything here. With the current situation in the industry, PRO will be DOA, as no game can justify the purchase. SE obviously has either limited budget, or are struggling to provide the graphic quality they used to. It's not the same company as 2 decades ago. But still their games a good and fun, so who cares about the neckbeards counting pixels?
