Rumour: Greek God of War Game Is a 2.5D Metroidvania

Skeptical about this. We’ll see though.

I'm all in for smaller projects but damn, people won't take this well.

I think this will be cool if true. I don’t mind smaller projects that are interstitial to the AAA experience. I absolutely loved PoP: The Lost Crown, and if it’s similar to that, I’ll be pleased.

Sounds good to me, I preferred the older view on the original games.

I never once considered that this might actually be a real game, so I’m not sure what to make of this now. Actually sounds like it could be legit, who knows.

Nothing against metrovania games they're great but ion want don't want this for GOW right now especially when we got Valhalla which is fantastic

I'm down for that, it's not something I've thought about but GoW fits that style well. People will not be happy, I'd announce it alongside a more traditional God of War but I don't care, this sounds good.

Honestly over God of War at the moment but a Kratos metroidvania sounds like a match made in heaven.

A lot of people will criticize it to the moon and back, similar to a lot of the reception to Nightreign, and I'm enjoying that a ton.

Sounds good to me. When they rebranded ps+ I said back then that they should set up or acquire a couple of small teams to work on much smaller budget side projects for existing IP with the intention of bringing them to ps+ day 1, the last bit seems unlikely but the rest of it fits the description of this game perfectly. I'm very interested in this.

Im okay with this, but im more interested in new SP IPs from Sony. Im burnt out on GOW and Horizon.

But surely modern remasters of the GoW Collection Vol 1 & 2 plus Ascension have to be on the way, Sony busy remastering games which are 2mins old, but ignoring their classics like GoW, Killzone, Motorstorm, Resistance, Socom/M.A.G.,Warhawk etc

If the old Kratos is back and it has blood and gore again, I could be interested.
To note is that I'm talking about 2018. Won't be playing Ragnarok.

I mean, this kinda worked for Prince of Persia, will have to see it in action. That being said I would love another GoW3 style game again.

Sounds great. Hope it's good. Couldn't imagine something like this for GoW but makes sense when you think about it.

God of War: Betrayal remake would be very pleasant & very welcome since it's hardly accessible and still considered canon.

GoW could make for a sick Metroidvania although ill admit it'd be cooler if it was pixel/sprite based

I am torn here. I really do think smaller games with smaller budget is what the industry we love needs.

But....if there is any game series that maybe should not go this route, GOW might be it. Those games are so reliant on scale and spectacle. It might be the one series you resist toning down.

I'll play it, but I would not be as excited for this. I would be eager for them to prove me wrong!

I've enjoyed a couple of these, although I've yet to play The Lost Crown beyond the demo.

I'm glad they're doing that. Price of Persia the lost crown was fantastic and deserved more sales. This is a good idea as a spin off, and then the next mainline God of war will be back to normal I imagine

On one hand, I enjoyed Lost Crown way more than I thought I would. On the other hand, I never liked a single GoW game and I doubt I ever will.

I mean as a guy that's not really into Metroidvania's but loves God of War, I am interested but curious how this game would do considering how awesome Lost Crown was but that game didn't sell well enough.

If it's a smaller budget game(which I assume it is) then sales won't probably matter as much but it should be fun.

I personally still want a spinoff game with Thrud, Angrboda and Atreus. Thrud getting her dad's hammer(on top of being awesome in Ragnarok), Angrboda having cool powers and Atreus just being Atreus, that game would be fun. Sony Santa Monica could probably do something fun there like a Miles Morales sized game.

Not sure this ones for me - I loved 2018 and Ragnarok (probably my top game this generation), but never really was a big fan of pre 2018 GOW. Feels like a step back but Im sure there is a market there.

Ive been wanting a 2d gow in the style of Castlevania for a long time so would love this. The director of Ragnarok said he wanted to make a Castlevania so this might be his game.

@Majin_Deicide I was going to say the same thing, it's highly unlikely but a 16bit castlevania aesthetic but god of war themed would be awesome.

POP The Lost Crown is one of the best Metroid vania’s I’ve ever played, so if this game ends up anything like that, then I’m sure I will be happy.

@B_Lindz I was thinking the exact same thing. By the way, I personally adored Metroid Dread. I’m a huge fan of the genre, and Dread is probably my favourite Metroidvania ever.

I will definitely agree in Atreus taking the lead for the next big GOW game - the story of Ragnarok felt like a real passing of the torch, and was left with Atreus setting out on a new adventure (which Angrboda, Thrud, and Ingrid the sword need to be a part of), whereas it felt like Kratos and most other main characters parts in the story were at an end for now.

Needs to be set only a year or so after Ragnarok though, no more big gaps, but it could easily set up the following game in the series which brings Kratos and Atreus together SM2 style, with each taking lead.

After all, 1 of Odins ravens survived and its no stretch to think Odins Soul managed to enter into it at the critical moment, a revelation that Atreus could learn at the end of his game prompting him to return to Kratos etc.

@Rich33 Yeah I feel like they setup a game with the Atreus, Thrud and Angrboda easily at the end and a follow up game like that would be a good setup for the next Big Mainline entry in the God of War Franchise.

I mean watching Thrud fight in Ragnarok and not being able to use those moves was like "Come on Man", same with Angrboda.

So it's possibly a God of War: Betrayal remake/reimagening?

I like metroid and castlevania but not the other games copying the formula. We'll see.

Hard pass! I did not like GOW 2! Loved the first one but hated the second. I felt it was missing something. Kratos felt under powered. Spartan rage was a joke. It felt like a live service game. The enemies whee like sponges and it really felt like something was missing.

This sounds like an horrible idea but who am I but an angry gamer trapped in the past of great games and unmatched creativity.

So a successor to Betrayal on cellphones then? Jokes aside I think a smaller scale one is fair. Another 2D GOW game would be nice. Or Ratchet Going Mobile like either then the Before The Nexus Temple Run style auto runners.

We won't see other games like a Puppeteer or anything cough cough Sony and Bandai Namco. Or any other original IPs in 2D would we. Sigh.

I think many games can go different directions with gameplay or camera and so on and smaller projects are always cool to see.

Also characterisation with 2016 to Rift Apart felt hmm to go back to Nexus, so to me if they can write it like the Greek ones sure if not then well eh. Or just not Greek and just go to another type instead.

I think the Norse series had fine world building at times but the most boring gameplay/side quests and I hated Last of Us gameplay and story so to me GOW Norse formating Sony wants to their games was just not for me and I beat the story of 2018's to get it over with.

Even if I'd prefer more original ones then milking an IP and going the SAME direction with them despite the camera/other elements which I am not a fan of, but eh.

Nah I get it but as long as they don't assume big sales like Ubisoft did, the Metroidvania genre is trending but it isn't big sales either.

Even Song of the Deep tried and it did alright I guess besides being a Gamestop published game but was also too early I guess as well for 2016.

Metroidvanias are fine but I prefer 3D games more in Metroidvania and in general but seeing as how GOW series has gone eh, 2D sure but Metroidvania for trending sake is not my thing.

Sorry to burst the bubble, but GoW (the last 2 at least that I have played) have many Metroidvania elements. Metroidvania games are not necessarily 2D, the concept works fine on 3D. So these news are no surprise for me, and add some variety in PS library

More god of war is a plus for me and I'll quite happily play this in 2.5d or whatever it is set in..to those who are still complaining about the 2018 reboot and the sequel I say you are missing out on two of the best single player experiences on the ps4/ps5..

Metroidvania sounds good to me, especially if its at the level of quality as PoP.

This will be a prime example where "insiders" are doing more harm than good.

When talks about God of War greece spin-off first arrived, many were thinking about Lost Legacy style game built on assets from new God of War games. So while I adore this genre, I think many people will be disappointed by this reveal.

Including Jeff Grubb's agreement if anything lowers my credence that this is happening. I don't know why you keep reporting on his constant wavering reports.

@edwinjoe450 same, i'm actually perfectly fine with the idea of a metroidvania-style GoW game, especially after playing Bloodstained and Prince of Persia TLC, as long as it's well-designed. However, I doubt most GoW people are even fans of this style of gameplay, and if it's going to be smaller-sized, I also doubt the visuals are gonna be on par with Ragnarok's. The audience that Sony is attracting now seem to mostly care about games that look like "blockbuster titles". It's why despite Astro Bot being a really good game, it never managed to sell as much as some of Sony's other bigger-budget exclusives. I'll still go out of my way to buy it if it's actually true, since i'm really down on smaller projects while they are working on bigger projects, like how Nintendo is doing, but I just hope Sony doesn't set any unrealistic expectations.

Sop didn't start yet and im already kinda disappointed
