On the PS3, you always had at least the XMB on screen, which is the 2007 version of todays tiles.

As for now, if you go to the theme options on PS5, you can select static, animated or from your photo library.

You simply pop the wallpaper into your photo library and then select that as your wallpaper.

The user doesn't HAVE to buy one, but once a generation starts developers tend to target the new hardware. So the user either has to upgrade or not play the latest games.

So the longer the PS5 generation goes on, the longer we can be sure we have the hardware for all new releases.
