Sony is seemingly exiting the UHD Blu-ray player market, as it ends shipments of its UBP-X700/K device with no replacement in sight.

If accurate, it means Panasonic is the only recognisable consumer electronics manufacturer still making UHD Blu-ray players, although some Chinese companies are beginning to fill the void.

While the Japanese giant has not issued a press release on this topic, blog – and official Sony retailer – Kunkoku reports that the company has ceased shipping the abovementioned product.

This is reflected on the company’s own website, where the UBP-X700/K is currently listed as out of stock with no plans to ship new units in the future.

Technically the PS5 is a UHD Blu-ray player as well, although the platform holder has obviously signalled its intent to stop shipping disc-based games in January 2028. It’s unlikely the PS6 will come with a disc drive.

None of this should come as a surprise, by the way – Sony has been shedding many of its consumer electronics products, as it transitions more towards entertainment.

The market for standalone UHD Blu-ray players in 2026 is also likely to be vanishingly small.

If you want one of these, it does look like there are still units available in Europe and the US, but you may need to act fast as it doesn’t look like these will be restocked.

It’s possible Sony may announce a replacement product in the future, but looking at the way things are going, I wouldn’t hold my breath.
