Re: Quantic Dream: We Don't Think PlayStation Move Is Necessary for Beyond

bauckster

It may be just as well. From the little I tried them, I don't think the Move controls for Heavy Rain work very well. On the other hand, Move controls beautifully for the likes of Infamous 2, Portal 2, Killzone III, and a handful of others (sadly far too few). I hope that Bioshock Infinite still allows Move implementation, and that it does it well. Honestly, Move is closer to mouse and I personally prefer it for shooters if it is done well. But this game...doesn't feel like it needs Move.

Re: Okami HD Headlines Stellar European PlayStation Plus Offering for April

bauckster

Well, ironically I am happy to live in NA right now, because I just bought Okami! I would feel frustrated otherwise. At least I get some complimentary PSN money for spending enough money on my March purchases.

But seriously, yeah. Europe's plus offerings are still kinda pwning NA. Oh well. In reality I have way too many games to play them all anyway.

Re: Talking Point: Has the PS4's Lack of Backward Compatibility Affected Your PS3 Purchases?

bauckster

It bothers me only in the sense that it will delay me getting a PS4 by at least 2 years.

There are too many good/unplayed games for me to get rid of my PS3, and I don't feel that I can afford to keep both (nor do I have space). Well, maybe if the new system is fairly compact I will eventually get rid of my PS2 to make space for a PS4. But I won't get rid of my PS3 anytime remotely soon.

Lack of BC does feel like a mistake to me though... I know it seemed basially unavoidable with the new PS4 hardware. But a part of me is going to be tempted to trade in my Wii for a WiiU since Wii DOES have backwords compatibility. On the other hand, it will also depend on PS4 and WiiU's overall comparative collection of games....

Re: Review: Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time (PlayStation 3)

bauckster

Hmm, I wasn't in love with the demo, so I'm not totally shocked at a 6/10, though I guess I thought it would get at least a 7. The thing is, I think that even if a 6/10 is technically above average, a lot of people will see that score and think...meh, mediocre, skipping it. Which is unfair, of course, because they need to take the time to read the actual review (which I thought was very well written by the way). At any rate, it's a shame that they couldn't have stretched this game a little more, and avoided some of the repetitive pitfalls that seem to be present. Like others, I may eventually pick it up, but this review and my experience with the demo has convinced me to wait for now.

Re: 2K Games Shepherds Explosive BioShock Infinite Trailer Online

bauckster

I'm definitely looking forward to this! Anyone know if there will definitely be Move support? I know that the developers said there would be a while back, but some guy who works at Gamestop was telling me he didn't think so. He may not really have known what he was talking about though.

I think this game would potentially be incredible with Move support, extremely immersive if done right, a la Infamous 2/Killzone 3/Portal 2. While I like the dualshock, it falls short in shooters compared to the Xbox controller in my opinion.

Re: Controversial God of War: Ascension Trophy Name Squashed

bauckster

@Kayoss Okay, I should probably just let this go, but just to be clear. I completely agree with you that there should not be a double standard. I don't like the fact that violent video games for example, tend to get scapegoated for causing violence in the real world. There's no evidence to support that this actually happens.

Lookl, I'm a gamer, I play all kinds of games, including violent ones like God of War. I was referring to the casual use of the word "rape" in many gaming communities, not the depiction of it in games or any other media. The way the term is used among and between gamers is what I think is a problem. If somebody says to someone else after besting them in an online match, "I just raped you like a little girl" that is disturbing to me. Dude, I have a little girl. That s**t is not cool.

It is not the same thing as a movie or a game or a book, etc. exploring the ramifications of rape. I would be just as disturbed by a character in a movie or game saying "I want to rape you like a little girl." However, that doesn't mean the filmmaker or game designer thinks it is okay.

Sorry this thread got into a bit of a tangent, but I wanted to be clear. I am certainly no hypocrite as what we are talking about are 2 separate issues: the depiction of violence, etc in games (which I am fine with) vs. the casual use of rape language in a lot of gaming culture (which I am not fine with).

Peace.

Re: Controversial God of War: Ascension Trophy Name Squashed

bauckster

@Kayoss You're missing my point. It's not about being a "pansy." My point is that in some gaming communities the term "rape" is tossed around extremely casually. Here is a quote that kinda explains where I'm coming from:

"The difference between rape and murder is that there is no murder culture. By that, I mean our society has fully accepted murder as absolutely horrible crime. It’s (almost always) fully investigated and afterwards there are pretty much no questions like “Were they asking for it?” “What were they wearing?” “Did they ACTUALLY not want to die?”. It’s always taken seriously. There is rarely victim blaming or objectification. Rape is a different story." (taken from http://gamersagainstbigotry.org/2012/07/why-you-should-stop-saying-rape-casually-in-games/)

You don't have to agree with me. Personally I think it is never a term to be used lightly, as over half the instances of rape are never even reported. Thank you and good night.

Re: Joe Danger 2: The Movie Headlines NA PlayStation Plus Update

bauckster

Happy about Joe Danger. Not much else for me, possibly PoP Classic - cheap at under $5 for plus members. Anyone tried that one and know if it's worth it? What I'd like is an option to revert to the original classic graphics whenever I want, similar to monkey island's remake. That's not an option is it?

Re: Talking Point: Should God of War Follow in the Footsteps of Assassin's Creed?

bauckster

I like the idea of a new mythology. I wouldn't mind them doing away with QTEs either, they just feel a little dated to me now. Definitely keep the EPICness though!!

It's funny, because I came a bit late to the GOW franchise, and am playing through some of the games for the first time now. I thought it'd be overkill (too much of the same), but I'm actually really enjoying the relative simplicity of these titles. There's almost a weird purity to the whole thing.

That said, yes to new mythology with some new mechanics added in. Maybe some dungeons and free exploration thrown a la Darksiders.

Re: Controversial God of War: Ascension Trophy Name Squashed

bauckster

@Gamer83
My comment about the use of the term "rape" was simply meant to reflect that there is still a lot of sexism in gaming culture. I'm not implying that anyone here is okay with that. And I don't personally have an issue with the trophy name.

But seriously, like blackdragon says, let's just remember to be respectful, okay? One reason I haunt this site more than most is because people generally are cool and don't engage in flame wars. That is a good thing. Peace out, y'all!

Re: Controversial God of War: Ascension Trophy Name Squashed

bauckster

I'm actually a little concerned, not so much by the trophy name, but by some people's strong reactions here. Honestly, there is a lot of devaluing of women in video game culture.

I'm okay with the trophy name (basically), because of the silly fun mentioned, it is God of War after all. That said, there is a fine line. It is definitely NOT COOL to casually talk about, for example, RAPING someone in a game. Some things in gaming culture really need to change. Just sayin'.

Re: Review: God of War: Ascension (PlayStation 3)

bauckster

I dunno...the series seems a little dated to me nowadays. I don't think GOW in general has aged as well as some other classics. Good to hear that there are some really great elements though! (even better controls/graphics, customization in multiplayer).

Are there QTEs on this one? I've never been the biggest fan of those and was wondering how central they are to the game.

Re: Store Update: 5th March 2013 (North America)

bauckster

I tried the demo for Knytt Underground and really enjoyed, so I went ahead and bought it. Great fun. I really love me a good indie game.

Also, I'm looking forward to trying Bit Trip Runner 2...it's almost certain that I will buy this, though I'm debating between PSN and Steam...

Re: Wonderbook: Diggs Nightcrawler Pops Its Collar in May

bauckster

Hmmm..interaction seems a little minimal to me. I'd like to see more than just bringing the page up to shift light or rubbing the book to make water. One thing the Wonderbook peripheral seems to lack much of is replay value. Will there be any in this release?

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue One

bauckster

For some reason, I got inspired to dust off my Wii and finally give No More Heroes a go. Man, it's great! (and hard...and addictive). I'm still trying to beat Holly Summers, and I'm almost there..

I'm also working on Lara Croft: Guardian of Light on PSN, a great little game that I'm taking on in bite-size pieces.

Re: Beyond: Two Souls Launches in October, Stars Willem Dafoe

bauckster

HELL YES!!!! I am personally more excited about this title than Last of Us. To me, it looks totally unique. (also, I'm not the biggest shooter fan, though I will say that Last of Us does look much more interesting than your typical shooter). Anyway, my mouth is watering...seems like some pretty good pre-register incentives too!

Re: Sony Officially Reveals the PlayStation 4, Launching Holiday 2013

bauckster

I'm just not ready, personally. That said, I'm sure that the new system will be impressive.

Was there any mention made of if online gaming/streaming services like Netflix will be free? That could definitely be a dealbreaker for me if the new system goes the way of Xbox Live with annual fees (a load of BS in my humble opinion). I don't want to pay Sony to watch Netflix on my gaming system when I'm already paying Netflix, Plus totally pwns Xbox Live. I guess I'll wait and see...

Re: Rumour: Gaikai Will Enable PS3 Streaming on PS4

bauckster

@Squiggle55 I really like the idea of having the PS4 recognize a PS3 disk (for proof of ownership) and then streaming it. Hope that it can happen and that bandwidth demands don't make the whole thing too difficult for most people...

Re: Talking Point: How Important Are Motion Controls to the PS4?

bauckster

I'm for it. I like diversity in my gaming. Move is good for dance/fitness games. It can also be a great alternative way to play more "hardcore" (although I really hate that label) games. Anyone try Portal 2 or Infamous 2 with Move controls? While it may not appeal to everyone, for me motion controls make these games more immersive and awesome. Not to mention rail shooters!

Re: Guardians of Middle-Earth Free for NA PS Plus Subscribers

bauckster

@Squiggle55 I agree with you. I can actually get overwhelmed by too many huge games getting thrown at me at once. I dig playing some of the smaller PSN titles. Recent smaller/shorter games I've played for free due to PS+ include: Rochard, Retro City Rampage, Quantum Conundrum, Laura Croft:Guardian of Light, Starhawk (single player), Pac Man DX Championship. I was really getting into Infamous 2 also, but it was taking so much room on my HD that I ended up finding an awesome discounted Infamous collection. No regrets whatsoever. PS+ is an awesome service, no matter where you are!!

Re: Feature: Crafting the Contrasting Sounds of The Unfinished Swan

bauckster

I second that! Just finished the game myself. I don't know if I would say it was better than Journey, but it was VERY good, nonetheless. I love how the game evolved over the chapters, and found the story quite intriguing too. And yes, the music was very well done and, as you state, a great melding of classical and electronic.
