That’s essentially what Game Freak did for the development of Pokémon X and Y, albeit by splitting their developers into two teams.

I don’t want anyone to lose their jobs in this, but Double Fine should seriously consider pivoting to games people actually want to buy or that will unfortunately be the outcome.

I have a sinking feeling that all the game’s profits will go to management and investors while the staff are permanently laid off. That’s usually how things go in late-stage capitalism.

@Rich33 The number of people genuinely upset by the end of physical discs, and not just performing outrage for likes, is vanishingly small. You could see this kind of crap coming from a mile away when the ragebait ecosystem on YouTube spun into full gear around the release of Mario Kart World.

Funnily enough, there is very little online ragebait related to Xbox’s numerous hardware price increases (far more egregious than Sony’s) and the fact that their first-party games don’t even include the full game files on the disc anymore.

In short, it’s pure selective outrage by PC and Xbox players pretending to be Sony and Nintendo gamers.

GTA VI really goes to show that the Crimson Desert devs weren’t struggling with a “weak” base PS5, they’re just terrible at optimization.

@rjc-32 The Pro doesn’t have a significantly faster CPU than the base model, so 60fps is not realistically achievable. They’re not going to intentionally hobble their game out of the gate to sell it later down the line…

This makes me feel so much better about not splurging on the Pro. This was the one game that would have made the purchase worthwhile.

Crimson Desert shows that a game can be a buggy, broken mess that still doesn’t run at a consistently frame rate and it will still sell millions of copies. Gamers really do fall for “Unreal Engine 5 demo” graphics.

That’s great news, because I want my trophies and 4K support. Ports of the originals would be something at least, but PSP resolution is hard to look, even with the integer upscale of the Vita. (Though it’s possible to just render the original assets in a higher-resolution frame, which can look pretty good. Arcade Archives 2: Ridge Racer comes to mind.)

@Bizzy They’re subpoenaing the platforms where the leaks were posted to reveal the identity of the leaker(s), which would certainly be… a choice… if it was their own contractors. I also imagine it could get them in legal trouble if they were abusing the legal process for a false flag operation. Lawyers could get disbarred for doing so knowingly.

@Old-Red The game hasn’t leaked, a few seconds of early beta gameplay has. Making it a physical disc wouldn’t have changed that in the slightest.

Microsoft doesn’t even include the game on the disc anymore and requires a full download for first-party games. Where are people going to spend their money? Just stop playing games to win internet points?

I think you are totally mistaken about people defending Sony out of tribalism. I own all three current-gen consoles and 100% of my purchases now are digital.

I’m on the side of common sense.

I’m also observant enough of consumer trends to understand that neither Project Helix nor PS5 will include a disc drive.

@ThomasHL Why is it Sony’s responsibility to tell you what a game is about if the devs themselves can’t do so? That’s like asking your theater chain to explain what Spider-Man is about. Not their job, and if they have to do so, the studio has already failed.

Devs should stop making games for the purpose of gaming the Trophy system and maybe their games will stop being delisted.

Most if not all shovelware developers are indies and it’s totally subjective whether they are “legit” or not.
