Dreams and LittleBigPlanet deserved so much better. I have a sinking feeling that Media Molecule will be shut down in the next few years because they don’t make quote-unquote AAAA games but I will always appreciate their ingenuity.
@Art_Vandelay How do you sleep at night with such a cold and heartless attitude towards people with mortgages, families, and health insurance that are all now in jeopardy? I would say I hope a layoff never happens to you, but it sounds like you embrace them.
@Almost_Ghostly Very small minority indeed! They are 10 to 15% of the playerbase and looking at Japanese sales figures, the physical market there is dead except for Nintendo.
Sony is not a museum or a charity. If people want to preserve games for future generations, discs are not the way as those decay over time. They can do so much more easily with digital files (assuming they have a crack for the DRM, which is also present on discs).
Sucks that the Trump-Kushner crime family gets rewarded like this. Thankfully this gives me even more reason to avoid their copy-pasted annual releases.
@ATaco 85% of PlayStation game sales are digital, so how many people do you expect to jump ship for a feature they will never use? That’s like saying people would abandon traditional refrigerators because other refrigerators have touch screens, and they don’t want to be left out. 🤣
Xbox doesn’t even support games on the disc as is! Their discs for first party games force you to download the game anyways and the discs are just a license.
Also, the digital-only Series S and X have been dramatically outselling the disc X.
Suggesting they will support discs for Helix is pure delusion.
@Blaze215 They’re not wrong. The devs had to expect that people like you would concern troll over “but what about being able to kill women??? the outrage!!!” and it would have amused them greatly!
Evidently you’ve never played a GTA game where children are prevented from being killed because society generally condemns violence against children, just as it generally condemns violence against defenseless women.
@Grumblevolcano Why would investors not be happy with Sony killing less profitable disc sales, where revenues have to be shared with retail partners, in favor of keeping all the revenue? Investors aren’t horribly irrational like many gamers.
Who wants to bet they just pass the AI-generated assets through another AI image generator to clean them up and whitewash their origins?
Sega has been underperforming against their potential for well over two decades now. CrossWorlds has to be the most disappointing racer I’ve ever played.
Indies cannot replace first-party output because they lose access to the valuable IP that makes their games moderately successful. For example, a Patapon clone is never going to sell as well as a real Patapon game, and people can tell the difference between a knockoff and an original.
So cutting off an indie studio is pretty much a death sentence. Much of the former Japan Studio staff will be forced to leave the industry permanently when their studios struggle with sales, and take their creative ideas with them.
Highly-skilled creative talent, especially at the level of a creative director, is not fungible, meaning you cannot simply hire an average college graduate to replace the vision of someone who has been laid off.
Shame on Sony for betraying what made their consoles unique.
@Neuromancer Exactly, talk is cheap. If even a tenth of the people who claim they are going to boycott a thing on Reddit actually did so, they wouldn’t ignore online rage bait campaigns as they do.
Never missing a chance to post ragebait about physical games but also never missing a chance to make affiliate revenues off digital games they claim are ruining the industry.
Yup, sounds like a business that’s at least as greedy as Sony, and probably more so.
@Nem Did you read the article or just leave a comment based on the subtitle?
He’s suggesting that removing the need to support physical discs via a disc drive will lower the cost of the console, making the console accessible to a wider spectrum of buyers. And that is undoubtedly true.
It’s not like Sony priced the PS5 higher than the PS5 Digital because they wanted their install base to be smaller, it’s just manufacturing economics.
It’s almost as if Ubisoft, with access to hundreds of granular data points about how people buy their games, understands the market better than random online commentators.
@Kingy Calling Mat an industry puppet is such a strange thing to say as he makes his living off tracking physical sales figures. When Sony goes all-digital he won’t be able to monetize surveys of retailers for PlayStation games and thus stands to lose considerably from this trend.
@Izzyman78 What’s with this need to make up convoluted alternate explanations? If Sony were leaving significant revenues from physical discs on the table, they wouldn’t do so. That would invite shareholder lawsuits.
Good thing 85% of game sales are already digital and the vast majority will never notice or care about this change. Thankfully Sony doesn’t listen to the most whiny and hysterical voices who want to keep everything the way it was in 1996.
@SMJ The industry is simply aimed at what people will buy. The fact that Saros sold terribly and CoD sold like gangbusters means we will get far less of the former and far more of the latter.
@Noone2025 Sony are the only ones authorized to produce discs for their platform as they need to be signed with a key to decrypt them on the console, preventing bootlegs.
What they have said is they will offer limited production runs of pre-existing titles, not that publishers will be able to manufacture their own discs.
The title is clickbait. Publishers don’t manufacture game discs, Sony does. Sony decides when production ends, as is their right as the platform holder.
This is the only statistic that matters to Sony. Not the manufactured outrage online by the people who pirate their games, or play on PC or Xbox or Switch, or are just farming for engagement.
@kuu_nousee They’re only announcing the end of PS5 discs now to prime the pump for an all-digital PS6 and front-load the controversy. By 2027 or 2028, all but the most hysterical voices will have accepted that the new console simply is or isn’t for them.
People moaning about physical discs on a platform where 85% of sales are digital are not exactly the most rational. The indiscriminate outrage is sad but not surprising.

Re: Spider-Man 2's PS5 Sales Have Exploded After Brand New Day's Box Office Blowout
And I bet 90% of the sales were digital! The boycott this site has been pushing is really working guys 🤣

One person uninstalling a game is not a disaster. Clickbait.

Re: GTA 6 Pre-Orders Are 'Exceptional' So Far, Says Take-Two Boss
@Digit2021 How much interest do you earn on $80 in two months? Like 5 cents?
Re: GTA 6 Pre-Orders Are 'Exceptional' So Far, Says Take-Two Boss
Let’s see how the physical games fanatics spin the biggest game of the generation by a very large margin being a code in a box.
🤣🤣🤣
Re: 'Discs Don't Really Make Sense': GTA 6 Boss Says 'Sony Understands That' as It Kills Physical Games
@LogicStrikesAgain They just want to pirate their games and play them online for free. It’s a second-grade argument about how things should be priced.
Re: 'Discs Don't Really Make Sense': GTA 6 Boss Says 'Sony Understands That' as It Kills Physical Games
Thank you Take-Two for saying what every reasonable person is thinking.
This debate has been taken over by the most extreme elements who do not represent the 90% of gamers playing digitally.
Physical is dead.
I’m sure the “physical games only” crowd will follow through on their principles and boycott the biggest game of the generation (lol).

People who get this triggered about changes in technology need some serious help.
There was no outrage when Steam replaced DVDs with digital downloads. The current hyperbole is manufactured and hysterical.

Re: These New Xbox Prices Are Truly Terrifying for PS6
PS5 Digital is a fantastic deal at $600. It’s by far the cheapest way to get a 4K gaming setup.
Not sure why anyone is still buying Xboxes, and I say that as an owner of a ($500) Series X from 2020.

Re: 'We Are Not Seeing Any Impact on Our Business': Sony Says Physical Disc Backlash Is Having Zero Effect
“Personally, I think it’s a profound waste of plastic, so I hope it makes adjustments accordingly.”
Buying a physical game wastes just as much plastic, plus the materials used for the 4K Blu-ray, but you don’t have a problem with that.
Re: 'We Are Not Seeing Any Impact on Our Business': Sony Says Physical Disc Backlash Is Having Zero Effect
@Dazzar You’re considering moving back to PC because… hold on… other people are outraged? Do you just adopt the mob mentality du jour?
Re: 'We Are Not Seeing Any Impact on Our Business': Sony Says Physical Disc Backlash Is Having Zero Effect
@Brumblescope It has no impact on their BUSINESS. Many of the people who whine about this don’t even buy PlayStation games anyways.
Re: 'We Are Not Seeing Any Impact on Our Business': Sony Says Physical Disc Backlash Is Having Zero Effect
Most of the people whining online are probably PC players who pirate their games anyways.
Re: Sony Knows How You Feel About No More Discs, But It's Not Going to Reverse Course
Sony cares about purchasing behavior, not whining. Good for them. Don’t cave to the loudest and angriest voices who just pirate games anyways.

I have no interest in picking up a PS5 game where the sequels aren’t guaranteed for PS5. Might as well just play on Game Pass.

Re: GTA 6's Physical PS5 Download Codes Expire After Just 170 Days in Japan
@dskatter You have 170 days to give them their gift, which is slightly longer than needing to give it the “same day.”
Not sure if they have Amazon where you live, but they usually expect you to return stuff within the first 30 days.
Re: GTA 6's Physical PS5 Download Codes Expire After Just 170 Days in Japan
I expect the same level of unhinged vitriol to be directed at Rockstar for going all-digital as was directed at Sony for doing the same.
Oh, just kidding. This is the internet. Rockstar always get a free pass
