Irate Physical Game Fans Prepare for Their Big PS5 Blackout

Doubt a week is going to make much difference, sadly.

It'll take place in the comments sections..People say they will take part but they won't.. they've got games to play and gums to flap..

It will be interesting to see just how much real support physical discs have.
If this was something I cared about I would 100% be taking part as it targets Sony's engagement metric, but I'm unconvinced some of those making the most noise care enough to 'go without'. I think Sony are unconvinced too.

I can't imagine there are going to be many people doing this. A few thousand people will barely make a dent in the figures. Needs to be in the millions for Sony to even raise an eyebrow.

It's not going to make a difference. I won't be doing this blackout since there's games I want to play as well as participate in the mw4 beta.

If this improves the Sony servers it'll at least make my group of gamer friends and family happy!

Love how they pick a week with not much happening.

One week of people doing this isn't going to magically make Sony change course; not enough people will follow through on their threats and the needle will barely move.

So just skip the BS and just don't buy/play on PlayStation products altogether because that's the only thing that's even got a chance of swaying them.

And even then, if there were enough people only buying physical games for this sort of movement to make a dent in Sony's financials, they wouldn't be stopping physical game production in the first place.

It's honestly kinda sad how so many people have internalized being completely powerless about anything any corporation or government does. Regardless of how right they may be.

I'm going to be playing on PS5 Pro like any other week and I'm going buy a new digital game on PSN. Most of the ones pushing this boycott are pc gamers.

But I am going to boycott pc gaming.

I share the same sentiment as others I've seen. Doing something like this would've meant more(?) if they did it during the launch of a big game. GTA, Wolverine etc. Doing it during a random week without much going on PS related really doesn't show much conviction at all.

I'll be paws deep in Palworld, and when I'm not they'll be AFK farming/crafting while I do other things. Gaming shines a light into my life, I'm not blacking it out over something like this. I do love physical and preserving different generations but Sony aren't changing their minds about this. Not when they are printing that warning/date on those newer units, retraining staff and so on.

I won't be participating, but best of luck to everyone who is. I hope there are enough of you to get your message across!

What can i say, i never cared for the sad dad, quick time event games they recycle the same mechanics in all their games. That is what Wolverine is facing now. It’s the same gameplay from Spider-Man PS4. I think the PS6 needs a huge shake up to get me on board. But this little black out/ boycott idea is not the way to get Sony to listen. Don’t buy the games and make them make better software decisions. So to your point i agree, they will be back to playing games and coming on here to say Sony is evil. When they aren’t evil, they are just lazy and in many ways not nearly as talented as the internet gave them the Crown to be.

Simply don’t buy games and cancel the services and that might get them to listen some. Doubt it but it’s a better attempt anyways.

I bought Bayonetta digitally for $7 and im going to be playing that all weekend.

I’ll do it for the hell of it (and so I’m not called a hypocrite) but I don’t see how this can work at all. It fails on so many many MANY levels. And this is coming from one of this site’s most pro physical users.

I have lots of Warhammer to build and paint, and will finally get to watching some anime series I’ve been wanting to get to. Seems like as good an excuse as any to catch up on other hobbies.

But if you truly believe in this boycott you will boycott Playstation web sites at the same time.

A minority of gamers shout at the clouds because this will have about as much effect on Sony as it does the clouds.

If I was Sony I would take the piss and schedule a deep sale on some exclusives and / or a free weekend for one or more of their exclusives releases from the recent past

@Bez87 the 5% is the total income from discs, not the percentage of console owners who buy discs. 20% of all game sales are on discs, but you’ve got to consider that a lot of PS5 gamers would have a hybrid library, so the total would be closer to 30%-40%

@Bizzy I mean, I have a digital-only library. But people wanting physical does nothing to minimize my preference or choices. That's what confuses me most about the anti-physical mockery: if you're really indifferent, just...don't say anything.

It also can't be ignored that physical truthers are at the forefront of conversations about ownership. And it behooves people like me to press about that topic regardless of my feelings on actual physical things.

Also I don’t think Sony are going to feel any effect of this fallout until the ps6 generation. Most ps5 gamers probably aren’t going to sell their consoles due to recent events but I think buying habits will change come January 2028 and when the ps6 releases.

I understand being told you are irrelevant (physical sales I mean) is probably not an easy thing to hear but that is the cold harsh truth of what Sony have said.

If nobody told them about it, I bet Sony wouldn't even notice on their analytics. Picking a time where there is nothing signficiant coming out and it being slap bang in the middle of summer holidays where people go away and go outside far more just screams of an incredibly poorly thought out plan. If they were serious about this, they'd have done it thr week Wolverine comes out, couldn't be more obvious.

@8th_Observer It’s a mess, I admit, and it’s a mess caused by multiple factors. Every game is different, and so some gamers are going to be more upset than others at the news at this. When some users are fed up with the discourse and want to move on, or when other users take great personal offence to comments that may not have been aimed at them, it can create fireworks.

@Enuo i'm all for people taking action against something they believe in but there are two clear issues with this that has resulted in the deserved backlash against the backlash.

firstly, it's incredibly poorly thought out and stinks of people half-assing it, they're making no sacrifice here, do it when Wolverine comes out, do it when the digital only gta 6 comes out not when there is nothing. it's the equivalent of claiming you're on a crash diet whilst having food poisoning.
secondly, the way they've gone about just annoying everybody has saw sympathisers and would be supporters turn on them, making every Playstation bit of media completely incapable of holding any discussion on anything else was only ever going to piss off the people they want on their side. I liken them to the eco warriors that block motorways and make everybody suffer, theyre only ever going to get people disliking them, find a better way of making your point.

I feel like this is the “go woke go broke” people who think themselves far more important than they actually are. Anyway, my son is off at Navy boot camp so I’ll boot up his console this weekend as well to offset lol. I’m kidding. I play PlayStation. But I have no real love or hate for Sony. So how is not playing for a week any different from disconnecting the ethernet/internet and playing offline? I assume both would count if it's just Sony not seeing player numbers online?

If I knew how to post images I'd post the image of all the people boycotting Modern Warfare 2 because they wanted dedicated servers only for the majority in that boycott group to be playing Modern Warfare 2.

@Enuo People aren’t fighting for their consumer rights at all. They’re fighting to be heard, mainly with other people online and to feel connected to something far bigger than themselves.

If people actually wanted to fight Sony on this, they would have contacted the board members.

Literally, right now, write just one singular email to a secretary or CEO and you will have done far more than these thousands of people do by not logging in to an online system with millions of users.

Fighting for consumer rights ideally means people know how to fight for them, not logging in to a console for a week isn’t fighting for anything.

I mean are people here really that inept that they can’t compose an email, create a petition like the other disingenuous one, and get people to copy and paste and send the email to Sony?

If we all sent one copy and pasted email to Sony by the thousands, sent them print outs to their addresses by the thousands, it would all do far more than not logging in for a week.

This isn’t a fight, it’s a whimper from an already beaten fraction of a consumer base that is clearly lost at sea without a paddle.

If you, or anyone else thinks this is going to be even registrable on Sony’s analytics, well then clearly none have worked for a large consumer facing business.

You do know people go a week without loading a PlayStation by the millions already, right? As in national holidays, school holidays, national emergencies in countries and so forth.

They all impact a service like PSN by the millions at times over the course of a month.

Much like how TV famously isn’t watched by nearly as many during summer months.

PC has been disc free for years. Xbox hasn't said a word because they're doing the same thing. Nintendo is riding the line with GKCs, which can at least be sold and traded. Digital has been the path for a long time now and nothing is going to stop it. It's a dying format. if you want to quit your hobby because of it, that's up to you, but the doomsayers are basically inventing scenarios to make it all worse than it's going to be.

Imagine that after a whole week of not playing video games, some of these people touch grass and realize that video games aren't so important in their lives that they need to have them on a plastic disc that will eventually, inevitably just become non-biodegradable trash anyway.

Obviously that won't happen, but it'd be deliciously ironic.

I only have a PS4 PlayStation-wise and it's been disconnected from the internet since March so I could play Neptunia: Sisters VS Sisters without updating the game.

Also haven't touched it since then, so yeah, I'm in the blackout, let's goooo! Time to teach Sony a lesson for their grave mistake.

@Nep-Nep-Freak Make sure to never ever connect it to the internet again, otherwise it reports your activity for this week to Sony the moment it syncs back up with their servers.

Not trying to be condescending, just letting you know if it’s your intention to make Sony believe you’re not gaming that week, it would require you not ever connecting the console to the internet, otherwise it will report back to them even a year from now.

Also only ever purchased two games on sale on the PS Store anyway, which is fewer than the amount of discs I have purchased, and definitely not doing that sort of thing on PlayStation any more, so at least I personally am not just whining and doing nothing else.

If for some reason I ever did get a PS5 in the far future (like, for example, if my PS4 broke down 15-ish years from now) it wouldn't ever be connected to the internet either 🎉☺️.

Yeah, I'm not as deep into the PS ecosystem as many of you, I only have a PS4 for Neptunia games 😂.

@Deadhunter PC is disc free, but there are several other game stores available. Your library also isn't confined to a single piece of hardware. Most of my steam library is under $20/game if you wait for a sale - of which there are many. If you're only able to purchase something directly from Sony themselves, then they have zero competition. I think the bigger concern here is that there needs to be some sort of law that creates actual ownership instead of a glorified rental service.

Pre-ordering and refunding would hurt Sony way better than this, just sayin.

Having this kinda boycott from now until December 31st and avoiding any and all upcoming PS5 games during that period would probably be way more effective but what do I know, I'm just a sane human being.

Another round goes to Sony... So many people (especially in the USA) could careless if PlayStation goes digital. Between CoD, NFL (National Felons League), Fortnite, and so much more, this will not phase PlayStation whatsoever. Is it a great idea? Yes? Will it work? Not as much as I would like for it to work. Will I participate? Nope? Why? I will be enjoying my vacation to Rome and Finland for the next 3 weeks.

What if we all just agree to not BUY any games until Sony reverses court.

I think it so funny how little people believe going all digital has really impacted the base. But I do agree this week off wont do much. The real impact wont be seen until the 6 launches all digital and most of gen x like myself do not buy. I will buy the heck out of ps5 down moving forward but I see most gen x not buying anything forward. Thats when it will hit Sony. I have two sons 6 and 4 that will never grow up with a new Sony console in the house. They think that gen z and A are carrying them right now but where do you think these kids are getting the money for these mircotransactions? So when my generation stops buying their portals, multiple and special edition controllers limited edition shells etc.. and we arent raising our kids into the ecosystem it will hit them. Then everyyone on here will claim it was the high price that sunk the generation not retaliation for physical that did it. But keep telling yourself that while I am playing on an open ecosystem for digital and just playing my backlog of 348 disk I havent even opened yet. We gen x play the long game we invented FAFO and while it may take awhile I got plenty of physical to keep me busy. Burn baby burn, me and my 5k to 7k a year I spend on Sony are going elsewhere.

That is the only message that COULD Sony let reconsider the decision: shrinking monthly sales on PS Store (when ignoring GTA6). Everything else is just a waste of emotional energy and pathetic.

The fact is minority of people are buying new physical games and the ones that are, are playing them and then selling them for then to the majority who own physical are buying pre owned.

Unfortunately digital is now the majority of new sales.

Physical 1 person can buy the game new, but several can buy and sell the same game.

i don't get the point of this , if you want to show them , then buy the disc version of every game , bump the sales of physical versions, they can't ignore sales. but if you aren't buying anything i doubt they'll notice a small dip in sales.

Well, I already unplugged last weekend, for two weeks. Won’t miss anything, have other consoles, which are the only place I spend money since they announced killing discs.

@Leinad7 if we’re being honest, this is one of the reasons why this boycott won’t work. By your own admission, you’re not on Sony’s system at the moment, so losing you isn’t going to affect the player metrics.

With that said, jolly good. It’s never a bad thing to increase the library for your other consoles. I don’t have that many PS3 games, possibly less than the PS5 library personally.

@twitchtvpat I think the idea Does It Play have is that they’re making a stand. I like to think that they’re smart enough to know this won’t make a difference, but it’s making a stand that matters to them. With that said, I’m totally on board with you. The best thing we can do is buy our games physically.

@RobN so hilarious that just because we are diehard for physical, people think it has to be that only. I have around 300 physical ps5 games, 450 physical ps4, only about 30 ps3, but I also own 168 digital games. I also had ps plus which let me play games online. I also regularly double dip on games I really like (that is gone now by the way). The fight is over options not one or the other. The fight is over physical forces the greedy corporations to keep their prices competetive because they have to compete with the second hand market. Of my 450 ps4 games about 300 were bought used, they are forcing me to limit myself to a much smaller selection of games I will be able to play in the future. And at a much higher price. I have found so many games I would never have played if I was forced to only buy new. This is going to kill smaller games, but y'all keep y'alls convenience of not having to get off the couch to change a disk. Also as a side note the Portal will play disk based games if the disk is in the ps5.

2) Enjoy punishing yourselves
3) Most of the participants will still be giving their money to Sony somehow, someway
4) This is the only site on the entire internet that even considers this news

@ShadowRJ i agree, i am sure a few will really do it, but again Sony don’t care. They will make 100’s of millions of dollars when GTA 6 comes out. No one that isn’t super invested in gaming news will skip on GTA and PS will sell the most copies. So this seems more like doing it to prove a point to themselves than Sony.

I don't think this will do much but when the PS6 comes out and not many people buy it, (this'll probably be my last even before the lack of physical games happened) that will be their sign. Otherwise it won't change. I might turn off my internet but still play offline.

This boycott might not put a tiny bit dent at Sony's revenue. But at least it's not spamming or trolling indies or devs social media account that has nothing to do with Sony decision to kill physical games. The boycott is aiming straight at Sony and somehow some people in here have a problem and take it personal like the boycott aimed at them. Some of you weirdos really needs to stay away from physical games article if you are tired and fed up with physical fans who fight for their right.

Anyway. I'll join the boycott. 1 week is short and i can used my 3DS for Luigi's Mansion 2.

The silly thing is Sony doesn't do weekly metrics but MAU. So if you've logged in anytime in August, well you're already a happy part of the metric. This boycott is literally a waste of time. Now if you did the whole of August or better yet September or November, you would actually hurt Sony. But that requires guts that they don't have.

The only thing I have done is cancel my PSPlus so it will not renew. And just stopped buying games. I have a backlog anyway and saving the dollars for GTA6. I am a pea in an ocean in regards to Sony. One thing I have noticed though is since I have stopped buying I am seeing even better price deals in the storefront though. One of my friends says Saros was reduced in sale but my price was even lower than he was shown. What gives?

This a small minority that feels loud because of the echo chamber of internet outrage. It's been pointed out numerous times, by myself and others, that the only way to make a difference, if you're angry, is to stop spending money on PlayStation anything, period. But most of the outrage warriors will never do that, hence this is mostly performative and will accomplish squat.

@Max_the_German That's what I've been doing. Cancelled plus (renewal would be next month) and stopped buying digital on all consoles (though I'm fine with DLC if something comes around before this generation ends).

If the PS6 doesn't sell well it'll be a sign the price was to high, not that they are killing physical lol. That's how I and most people will probably see it anyway. It won't stop some claiming a small victory though as it will be the only way they could try and claim killing physical has had some type of impact.

Here we have an echo chamber of complicit blind consumers that lack any sort of reflection and backbone, hiding behind a shallow façade of edgy cynicism.

It won't affect Sony's bottom line, but it generates media coverage and can influence public opinion, which can affect Sony over longer periods.
Of course it'd be more effective if the community wouldn't consist out of a bunch of impotent tools who only identify themselves through corporate tribalism and "cool" social media snark.

Microsoft doesn’t even include the game on the disc anymore and requires a full download for first-party games. Where are people going to spend their money? I think you are totally mistaken about people defending Sony out of tribalism. I own all three current-gen consoles and 100% of my purchases now are digital.

Anyways, this isn't about consumer trends, but a question of consumer rights. People brush this off as a trivial gaming matter, but where do you draw the line before you own nothing in an increasingly digital world? If Sony and Microsoft come with forthcoming digital solutions, like the ability to resell or trade digital games, to be able to store games on self provided mediums, actual ownership, then I'm all for going all digital if it's future and consumer oriented. But now it's merely greed oriented, and in that case I'm served better to an extent on Nintendo and PC for the foreseeable future.
Netflix and Blu-ray's, Spotify/iTunes and vinyl, kindles and books all manage to coexist, why can't video games!?

Also, these numbers that get thrown around, these are all published by businesses who only profit by making everyone believe that everyone is going digital. It's skewed in so many ways and oftentimes only representing the us market, or adding pc sales which naturally are all digital.

I just don't get the point of so many here mocking the efforts of people who are passionate about either physical media or more importantly consumer rights. It's people confusing being a realist with complacency. And if this defeatist attitude is here, then it'll vary over to many other aspects of life.

I´ll be pessimistic and suggest that the vocal minority isn´t gonna move the dial here, and many of them will still play during it all - knowing that nobody will be checking on them anyway.

Ironically, I´ll be participating by default, since I rarely boot up my PS5 these days anyway. But I don´t expect it to matter to Sony; the die is cast.

Doesn´t mean I'm happy about it, but beyond keeping my PS5 turned off and purchasing the odd game physically, there isn´t much mure I can do.

Reading through here just make me feel powerless, just as much as no matter how much I buy bnew games in physical format to become my collection, it's not powerful enough to convince Playstation to not end support for physical copies of games in less than 2 years. I just honestly feel like it's too early for them to do so. Especially when I just started all this in 2016.

Hopefully Nintendo still does it's thing by the time Playstation ends such support by 2028. I'll definitely continue gaming and collecting on team red by then.

@Northern_munkey I have limited time and Sony doesn't care anyway so why bother. I just buy less games and are saving up for a Switch not to make a fuss Nintendo has the better games now.

@Random_play05 Same here people are all celebrating here that they get less options it's weird. I'm going the same route myself and Nintendo seems to give me more games I want to play anyway.

I barely even touch my PS4/Xbox One as it is, last time I used it was a few months ago, did the firmware update, checked eshop and moved on. But my PS4 is also playing up with controller (cable or wireless) connections so no idea what it's issue is. My PS3 works fine without it's wifi chip. Xbox One accounts are just annoying all the time and not much I care to play on it anyway.

The remote play app barely wants to work on PS4 either. It used to be just the OS, but even games/apps it can happen so no idea what it is on the board. The disk/eject button being touch yes it's the 2.4 Ghz PS4 base model, doesn't help either. Got a Pro but I don't use it much. The PS5/Series in the house I don't care to use either.

Xbox One I haven't touched in about a year now I think. I don't care for PS5/Series X at all, have them around me, not touching.

Been playing Switch, PS3, 360, OG Xbox on my 360 and PS2, need to get back to my other systems as well. Got more WIi/Wii U games again even. DS games here and there. PSP, PS1, etc.

I have checked the eshop/app a few times but not often enough to care.

I'm not expecting much really to happen, but it is interesting to see those who 'do' commit to it and those who don't.

I sometimes barely even check my consoles and do the Switch eshop more then I do playing games on it sometimes.

Just using my phone/computers instead. Varies.

I doubt all 93+ million PS5 consoles, are connected and used 24/7. So even if a million users, joins this, it won't even be a blip on the radar.

Try to get 30 million users, to do this, for 6 months, that might make Sony notice it.

@Flaming_Kaiser true. But no matter. It won't sway my preferences, and my view towards digital content won't change. I've hold off many times on buying games (particularly sequels) all because it's just a digital release like DL: The Beast (I own DL and DL2 in physical format and enjoyed them both). I just don't see an all-digital gaming as money's worth. It's like losing large sums for just a portion of the fun in gaming.

Good timing - I'm on holiday and will not be taking my overweight tub o' lard with me, transferring my gaming to the Switch & PSP (Everybody's Golf preloaded - I'm taking a leaf out of Shawn Layden's book).

@Exerion76 They chose the week they did, because the organisers knew that nobody would do it for the Wolverine or GTA 6. Or at the very least, vastly more people would log into PS than they would log out.

All I hope for is that when this inevitably fails (we all know it's going to) that people will see it as a poor attempt to start a boycott, and not use it as evidence that "people don't care about discs".

People who, in all apparent seriousness, frame this as "fighting for their rights" need to get outside into the real world more.

At this rate, they'll be going on hunger strikes next.

I won't be taking part for two reasons. Firstly I would prefer the choice to remain with disc Vs digital, but this protest will achieve nothing. The decision has been made and others companies have already put will do the same as they all want digital. If every player globally was to shut down for a week or two then Sony would notice. That's not going to happen thought, only 10% of players will even know about this and only 5% of that group will join in.

Secondly the Nioh 3 Dlc launches today and I'm not missing out on that just to make a point that is not life changing in the grand scheme of things.

Same idea as burning your ex-favorite band's shirts/discs.

They already have your money, they don't care what you do with your stuff after.

Bunch of people will have a bitter awakening when games will average 90$€ and upwards, long after release. But yeah, this is what they vocally supported with the childish "no one can tell me when I can play" attitude.

@Lgndk11r It's a little different (not vastly, but a little) because by not engaging with the platform, Sony can't get you to buy a bunch of DLCs, microtransactions and other £10 indie games.

That said, I can't imagine the crossover is particularly big. Of all the Fortnite players out there, how many of them do you think are doing so via the physical disc.

@tangyzesty I get where you are coming from and I am sure in the long run you will be right. My point is it is not performative as much as you think. While they may talk big NOW (people that are angry) the long run is what will kill sony. I spend between 5k-7k a year on gaming. I know I am fortunate, I know most do not spend near that much. But I would argue the ones that are the most angry are the small minority like me that spend that much. Sony is banking on the mainstream to carry them over what built them and I don't think long term they will survive that. Short term absolutely. But like I said me and many others wont have a new sony console in our house for the kids to grow up with. They are pushing out the old people like me in their 40's to concentrate on the new generation that has no ties to them they have ties to what is popular and where their friends are. Huge risk by Sony if you ask me.

Gamepass increased.. well howabout instead of shouting.. we just all cancel it.. look at how effective that was.

@Exerion76 I really don't understand why people having wanting to have options a reason to ridicule. It's no secret if there is only one choice to buy that there is less or no incentive to give you a cheaper option.

The PSN store is overpriced, badly managed and has no options where you buy their games and zero resale value.

Online gaming is expensive in the end why stay on Playstation for the 5 exclusives they release in a generation? Even their special studio's are getting closed or produce next to nothing.

There is no increase of money for the artists and you are stuck at a few big players. I'm just happy you can still get CD's as a option.

Free2Play the same thing kids pay nothing and spend with MT while getting zero value and getting used to a freemium market.

They expect less and less and in the end they make content as expensive as they want.

Because what are you going to do go to the opposition who does the exact same just slightly less in your face.

The term Microtransaction does not cover the amount of cash that is spend for skins, card packs that are useless next year.

Spending €20 on a skin 1/4th of a game years ago they would have laughed in your face and tell you that you are insane to spend that much.

Sony already made up their minds, and nothing is going to bring them back to releasing discs again. I'm seeing Microsoft doing the same thing, and if this all takes off, I see Nintendo doing it later on too. It's going to happen. Do I want it to...no. I enjoy collecting the cases with the artwork, so this is kind of a loss for me. The big thing is going to be the prices of the upcoming consoles...most people, like myself, end up buying a console and a second controller, and another controller gets expensive too...but now, you'll be paying that price and also another internal memory if you start downloading the AAA games (which the internals are expensive). I bought a 2TB for the PS5, and it's still not a large one if you download a lot of games.

In my opinion, it's going to come down to the price of the upcoming. PS6, and if families are going to jump on board with the prices...it seems that it's only Nintendo, that seems to realize that families buy consoles, younger kids want to play too, where as Sony and Microsoft cater to more or less, the older generations (like myself) who grew up with the times of Atari Nintendo and Sega, forgetting that they need the smaller less-complex games, to get the younger kids into it and family-games that the family can play together (I use to love playing with my family, taking turns to get the higher scores).

A blackout for a week is not going to do much of anything, and I bet that most of the ones that say they are going to do it, won't. The only way to hurt Sony is to not have the sales after the discs are gone...no buying the consoles, accessories and more. I've been seeing ditching anything Sony recently (trading in or selling all playstation consoles and games)...sorry to say, this isn't hurting Sony right now...you already gave them the money, now you're just dumping it all onto other sellers who will bask in the money later on. The only thing that the 'no disc' is going to do, is raise the prices of the discs available now...those costs are going to skyrocket and it's going to make them almost impossible to own (which means, people will turn to downloading them onto the store). Sometimes, I think this is Sony's plan...try to get people to buy the games online when the discs are hard to find.
