Re: Review: inFAMOUS: Second Son (PlayStation 4)

Visiblemode

@3rdEyeMind yep, yep, yep.

And no offense to Sammy, but I'm also getting tired of games being criticized for lack of innovation.

Some games are just iterations that have more polish. That's fine. Kinda getting fed up of game reviews focusing on what a game doesn't have, rather than what it does.

That said, I agree, 8 is a good score.

Re: Pachter: Titanfall Exclusivity Due to Industry Thinking Xbox One Would Eat PS4's Lunch

Visiblemode

@ShogunRok yeah, true. That's the awful flaw with paid exclusivity. It's just money not being spent on true first party development. That is, for better or worse, the current state of MS' business model, however.

As for Pachter, he's a clown. He is almost constantly wrong. In this case he's right, but as you said, he's stating the obvious.

Oddly though, in the run up to PS4's launch it was also obvious it was set to launch stronger. It was also obvious that console gaming is still going strong. We can count those under the category of obvious things Pachter missed. Even of he feigns humility in this article regarding the Ps4's success, one would be wise to take note that he also lays blame on everyone else, claiming they "all" thought that "microsoft were going to eat Sony's lunch."

A feint admission of a failing for an "analyst" who has probably cost gullible investors millions upon millions with his brash ignorance and shortsightedness.

Re: Opinion: EA Found Its Call of Duty Killer, and Committed a Titanic Mistake

Visiblemode

@Fenriswolf- yep, I consider the campaign to be a good opportunity to learn game mechanics and part of the purchase price- which it is, imagine how much time and money goes into the campaign?

Some might argue that goes back into the game, but I kinda doubt it. More likely: Cheaper/shorter dev cycle. Yet the game still costs the same.

I suppose the same argument can go toward games like Infamous and the Order 1886 skipping multi, but I consider that to be pretty different, personally.

Re: Opinion: EA Found Its Call of Duty Killer, and Committed a Titanic Mistake

Visiblemode

Yeah, it was a hugely shortsighted decision. Not only because of this iteration, but also because FPS movements are very time-and -place.

Is COD that good? No, but this about timing and momentum. It's about the public consciousness.

Titanfall as an entity will be 2 years behind other online fps threats like The Division and especially Destiny.

Even if, and it's a big if, they can attain exclusive success, in the vein of a Gears of War, those numbers are nothing compared to what COD does across all platforms.

This deal will do wayyyy more to help keep XB1 afloat than it will to line EA's pockets. I can't imagine MS paid them that much. GTA 5 took in 1 billion dollars in 2 days last year... A billion dollars did NOT get exchanged in this deal.

All this said, we'll see. It's "cool" to talk about how you never touch the single player content of these fps games, but guess what? I play them...and I'm guessing a lot of other people do too. A ton of online only experiments have failed. This one is not a guaranteed success, not by a longshot.

Re: Want to Know What Your PS4 Can Do? The Order: 1886 Will Show You

Visiblemode

Outside of the praise for the visuals and atmosphere, one point of criticism I've seen is that this seems to be "just a third person shooter with quicktime events."

IGN's Colin Moriarty was particularly harsh about it.

Other that we haven't seen much of the game yet -even the press hasn't at 40 mins...my problem is this infuriating hipster gaming press. This, and a few other sites excluded, there has been an enraging trend in gaming journalism lately where games get panned for not reinventing the wheel. (Despite that radical innovation is also met with frequent rejection and low sales)

Imagine this is just an uncharted clone with this cool setting and awesome look. That sounds amazing! I get to play 12-15 hours of uncharted every 3 years, do we really need to say a game has to be radically different to have worth? In their quest to "find different for different's sake" gaming journalists are "BEING different for different's sake." That is called being contrary and yeah it's basically just a hipster/slacker mentality that trivializes the accomplishments of others by pointing out what they aren't instead of what they are.

Anyway, that's my rant, this game looks awesome.

Re: Review: The Last of Us: Left Behind (PlayStation 3)

Visiblemode

@MadchesterManc
We won't see eye to eye on this subject, per se. But we don't necessarily see things entirely differently.

I think this comes down to genre preferences. TLOU was a remarkable 18h long. That is extremely long considering the genre. It's just not financially or creatively possible to make a 100h game of this type. Especially considering that at one point time itself is the ultimate deciding factor (in that a project has to have a time budget as well as a financial one.)

DLC is a really complicated thing to price. On the one hand it's inherently smaller in scope. On the otherhand it has a much smaller sales potential. (Units wise) Essentially, it's not a volume game. It's more something you create for the super-fans. To make more money and to sate their appetite for your product.

I never complain for more meat on the bone when it comes to DLC. It's genre based. Take a visual novel like Phoenix Wright. If the DLC is $10 and offers 6 hours can I say that automatically makes it better than this DLC which offers 2-3 hours for $15? No. PW games are quite long to begin with, as are most visual novels. This is because they are 95% text. They are cheap to make (relative to other genres). I adore the visual novel genre, but understand that it's $/h value is lower than a Naughty Dog game.

Some games are made by 1 or 2 people. Some games are made by literally thousands of people.

I'll wrap this up, it's really an in-person discussion by nature. So not possible to cover all points. I will say in closing that not all genres are the same. I had a blast with Fallout 3, but do I put the same $/h value on the game as tlou? No. It's far easier to create per hour, thus the ability for the devs to pack literally over 200h of side quests into the game. Neither type of game is better or worse, I basically like all genres, and accept that they have different costs/pricing structures. That said, I respect how someone might not care for all genres and/or see the value of of certain games even ones within genres they love... Even critically acclaimed games. No one can tell you what you will/should like.

Re: Pachter: PlayStation Now Doesn't Have a Prayer of Maintaining Subscribers

Visiblemode

The problem with this coin flipper is that he should never, ever, ever be listened to.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day and so pointing to his "correct predictions" is pointless. He is wrong, often wildly, on an almost permanent basis.

The videogame industry will be better off when this man is ushered out of the spotlight. He takes the entire medium down with his sideshow.

Re: Child of Light Will Cast a Spell on PS4, PS3 on 30th April

Visiblemode

@rjejr it's funny, but extra length works against games for me, often now.

My backlog is so enormous that I often find short to medium games to be appealing, in terms of new acquisitions.

I still enjoy long games, but it's those shorter games that are great to throw inbetween a couple at a time, to break things up a bit.

Re: Sly Cooper Sneaks onto the Silver Screen in 2016

Visiblemode

Yeah, seeing a lot of bitching on some sites about the "realistic models." Which is weird because they aren't realistic at all, really. I also have affection for the cell shaded look, having platinumed all 4 games I've seen a lot of Sly, but this new look is just a different type of cartoon look, more like Dreamworks CG style.

I think the problem comes down to Sly and particularly Murray's models. Not the style, as much, but the design.

Still though, could be a fun little movie.

Re: December NPD: Xbox One Hits Back at PS4 in Next-Gen Console War

Visiblemode

@Sanquine worth remembering that actual children are visiting these sites. Great chance that when you are being attacked by someone as immature as a 12 year old, they may actually be one. So yeah, kinda hard to care about the rantings of some silly kid without the maturity to express their opinions logically.

Re: December NPD: Xbox One Hits Back at PS4 in Next-Gen Console War

Visiblemode

@Gamer83 I disagree, The momentum shift is dramatic at this point and it started even before this latest generation, thus helping ps3 surpass the veteran 360 in total lifetime sales. Yes, that is globally, but strong US sales were a huge part of that equation.

Now, with Sony literally immediately selling every PS4 it makes, of course they wouldn't be able to meet holiday demands. (Think: a crowd gathers for an outdoor festival, the sun blazes overhead, two stands open, one selling ice water, the other warm milk. The ice water stand has 500 bottles available, the milk stand has 1000. Both sell out. The headline "Consumers prefer warm milk over ice water, 2 to 1, when temputures rise!" This is utter nonsense. Though, the market is more favourable to xb1 than milk on a hot day, it's just an illustration of manipulation of facts. Supply was clearly the issue in Dec, with adequate xb1 supplies and an absolute lack of Ps4 stock anywhere.)

This myth of North America being untouchable is illogical and historically untrue. One generation of being in second place (third if you count the DS family of handhelds) doesn't make a console brand untouchable. In fact, history has shown, there is no such thing. Every "console king" has eventually sunk, some returning to glory later, others not.

Even hardcore MS loyalists are keeping the rhetoric mild these days. The reason being, with MS having such a weak history with first party content, the early part of this console cycle is going to lean heavily on 3rd party titles which look and play better on Ps4, and despite what some elitists like to think, average people do know that and do care.

Will PS4 dominate the US territory in an unbelievable fashion? Not likely, but then again the MS supported hype that 360 did that was never true to begin with. Hard to say how things will shake out, but easy to say that the PS4 is likely to be in first place in most markets, the US included at the end of the first full year. (In fact they still lead in the US and globally, even now)

Re: Soapbox: Why There's No Real Rush to Upgrade to the PS4

Visiblemode

@ferrers405 yep just add PS4 and you described my quad-riad(?)

Sammy, I'm often in your corner, but am a huge believer in supporting and investing in next gen. While, I agree if you're forced to wait, that's not the end of the world, yet when people can buy one, I think they should.

If everyone waits, next gen will suck content-wise. The more rabid the adoption, the more games getting green-lit.

Ps3 is still amazing though, no question there.

Re: Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition Moors on PS4 in January

Visiblemode

@artemisthemp yeah price is the big factor for me too. I got the PS4 version day one. I LOVE this game and would love to replay it on PS4. However...for 60 bucks, I'll wait. So, we'll see. Afterall, this is just a return to the HD remasters of last gen, so max $40 value and a swift plummet to $20.

Re: Rumour: PS4 Loses Black Friday Battle Against Xbox One

Visiblemode

This is 100%, an issue of stock, guys. Up till a few days ago (and maybe still) many american retailers STILL had 'Day One Editions.'

PS4 sold exactly as well as was humanly possible on the biggest US shopping day of the year. They sold literally all of them. There were no more to sell. Being "outsold" when you sellout is sort of a misleading idea.

Especially when Microsoft was still selling launch stock, and refueling it, as Sony was launching over a million additional units in territories Microsoft already launched in.

This "winning black friday" story is MS spin. Like most of their spin, it's based on a very weak premise and ignores extremely important facts.

It's like having a contest where you can choose your own prize out of 10 available prizes. Winners get to select a prize from a table in the order their names are called. Among the prizes are one PS4 and nine frisbees. The first winner goes up and chooses the PS4 and the remaining nine are, obviously, stuck with frisbees. The headline: Frisbees More in Demand than PS4, 9:1!" Ummm, yeah, not quite the whole story.

Re: Review: Sound Shapes (PlayStation 4)

Visiblemode

@get2sammyb oh yeah... I had even forgot about the deathmode levels. A few take patience, but you'll get it. I love the game immensely, to the point where I buy and finish every dlc pack. (Beat school = unusual fun)

Honestly, this game has a special place in my personal list of favourite games. It's a gem.

Re: Talking Point: PS4 Proves That Consoles Are Alive and Kicking

Visiblemode

This BS about consoles not being relevant anymore is absurd. Generation over generation console growth is solid. The mobile bubble is bursting. There are great mobile games, but the platform is nothing compared to true handheld consoles, much less a ps3 or, worse, a PS4.

If anything, rabid adoption of mobile shows a growing taste for electronics spending.

Re: Is DriveClub Racing Away with the PS4 Visuals Crown?

Visiblemode

I love how clean the game looks. It's not trying to dazzle you by having scenery whip by at 400 miles an hour when the car is going 150. It seems like one of the few racers to come along in a while to just show off a real world experience, while still being detailed enough to be immersive. The in-car view is worlds better than it was before too, the wait has been well worth it.

Re: Talking Point: Is the PS4's Controller Pushing Your Buttons?

Visiblemode

@nathanuc1988 hmm, interesting you say that because as a gamer who started out in the 70's on Intellivision and played his way through pretty much literally every controller since, the first time I used a dualshock, I was like "finally!"

...but yeah, there is no right answer. It's subjective.

Re: Talking Point: Is the PS4's Limited Launch Lineup a Problem?

Visiblemode

@Gamer83 yeah but exclusivity becomes sort of moot when it comes to tiding over existing console owners, which is half the first year battle.

This is important because you don't want to see tons of used units flood the market like with Wii U, also your initial adopters are either your biggest ambassadors and your biggest critics, depending on how you keep them feeling satisfied with their investment.

Sure exclusives are a part of that, and a key to differentiation (along with superior image quality) but if an awesome third party launch landed every month it's unlikely anyone would sell their unit on Craigslist in disgust. (Not expecting this pacing just yet, but it illustrates the idea of how regularly spaced third parties are equal in their ability to retain users, especially when you have the definitive version.)
