Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 615

Sulleymonster

I finally played the silent hill 2 remake and finished it last night. I have to say I am slightly disappointed as it's known for it's impactful psychological horror story. The characters were one dimensional with only Angela being of any interest. I got the leave ending.

Maybe it was the length of the game that ultimately left me disappointed. It really needed to be 1/3 shorter. It took 25 hours to complete on hard/hard.

Also the puzzles were not exactly memorable and fairly easy to solve.

It's a shame as despite being let down with the overall story it was a great game to play (unlike silent hill f) but once fatigue around the middle of the hospital it all got a little repetitive and the story reveals felt like a huge let down.

The sound design is simply exquisite though and made the play through well worth it. It may be the best I've ever experienced.

Not sure I'll ever play this again for the other endings and using the chainsaw for a quicker run seems it may kill the dread and tension.

Played on the pro in performance mode. I was holding off for a proper update but gave up. It plays great (with vrr). Yes there is a shimmer at the beginning and a few times throughout the game but it's not that much of an issue as it's made out to be.

I wish I knew the no radio was a trophy as I thought it was really annoying and kills the atmosphere so turned it off after hearing it once ... So no trophy !

God of War Ragnarok, Tsushima and Exp33 all here to play but not really wanting to get into anything new. So I've just stated the foundation dlc in Control.

Moved over from Nintendo to PlayStation in the summer. I sold my OG switch, 13 games and my switch 2 (which sold for nearly double as was oos new at the time) which paid for a Pro and a LG C4. Very happy with the move !

DS 2 - 110 Hours
Alan Wake 2 - 64 Hours
Control: Ultimate Edition - 46 Hours
Outer Wilds - 35 Hours
SILENT HILL f - 25 hours

All of the games have been extremely memorable experiences, except for silent hill f, looking forward to some of the older games I've missed out on locked to Nintendo. I have Tsushima, God of War, Humanity, Silent Hill 2 and E33 all in the physical collection ready and waiting !

I'm finally getting to play the Outer Wilds after all these years and can tell after only a few hours this is going to be a very special game and experience. Managed to avoid all spoilers too over the years.

Completed Alan Wake 2 last week and achieved my first platinum. It was pretty simple and was surprised I didn't get a trophy for playing through on hard mode. A fantastic game but slightly bloated. Maybe that's because I've played AW1, Control, AWE and AW2 back to back.

Reading through the AW2 credits I was quite surprised that neither David Lynch nor Twins Peaks where listed under "Special Thanks". While I love what remedy are doing it would be nice to see a different direction in their next game that isn't influenced so heavily by other artists work. It's a fine line between influence and plagiarism.

As for the Outer Wilds performance in case anyone's interested - playing on dynamic mode 60fps on a C4 oled VRR. Looks really good with only a few stutters here and there. I bought it originally on the switch and glad I never played it as it looks a blurry mess compared to the pro (spoiler) missing the 30fps often. While I would have not let this stop me for enjoying the game (it was my only console at the time) I could not for the life of me fly and land the craft using a pro controller. I'm new to playstation and I did not realise until this game the difference adaptive triggers make.

@OptimusPrime1 in heavy battles (medical room) the drop is very noticeable (maybe it falls outside the VRR window). This the reason I turned pssr off. I played 20 hours in quality, unlocked, pssr off and vrr and only noticed a slight slowdown for a few seconds in the crazy shum battle.

Re: PS5 Pro Adds Frame Rate Option for Metal Gear Solid Delta

@rich33 in controls case frame rate can take a hit of around 10 with pssr on. If playing in quality mode it's extremely noticeable. Turning it off it runs pretty much a stable 60 with VRR. Shimmering is present in both fsr & pssr but amplified with pssr. I think remedys northlight engine doesn't play well with certain surfaces and the upscalers.
It's not all bad with pssr as it is sharper and other small improvements elsewhere (plants, hair etc).

@medic_alert the update came while it I was 20hrs in. It was excellent fun before the update (performance) and now it's simply stella. Unlocked FR, pssr off in quality mode is pretty much a solid 60fps ray tracing experience (using LG C4 VRR).

40 hrs and Hartman killed so started Alan wake 2 last night.

@feffster performance mode with HDR looks completey different now though and seems sharper than before when without pssr. I started the game a few weeks ago and have been playing it solely, 74% completed. I can see a big bump from the update personally. Pssr off is my preference in quality mode RT right now as it feels close to 60fps with VRR .

@wildcat_kickz

I'm playing it now in the pro on a LG C4 VRR. To my eye the quality mode runs at about 40-50fps, the lower end in busy battles. I'm enjoying performance mode personally as it's running 70-97fps and is very smooth. With the VRR, HDR and other pro upgrades the performance mode looks very close to quality mode now.

Pssr adds some light shimmering but it's also there with it off but not as noticeable. It doesn't seem too distracting and the image looks very sharp. Pssr seems to effect the fps by about 10fps.

I've only been playing for an hour so more time needed to see if any serious issues crop up. Very impressive so far.

Edit - Pssr adds noticeable "dancing noisy reflections".
So I think it's a no no for pssr. Especially in quality mode as the bump in fps by switching it off would be worth it as it seems to hold closer to 60fps
