Re: Assassin's Creed Shadows Soars Past 1 Million Players at Launch

Ryu_Niiyama

Playing right now and loving it. I always think it’s cool when Yasuke is depicted as a gentle giant and a wrecking ball in one person. The narrative is also doing a good job at depicting micro aggressions (already got two people that I really hope I get to take out) that exist to this day. I adore playing as Naoe and love how the game succeeds in making her and Yasuke feel different in gameplay. NGL I laughed my arse off at the original box loss scene. Isu genes make bone like vibranium lol. Love that the game lets you live as the characters but doesn’t overstay that. A lot of the fun versatility of AC’s brand of stealth is back and it feels great. I gotta say while I hate the concept of buying skins, the new armors look really good so I will wait on sales. (Translation is a widdle off but not enough to force me to switch to Japanese text) super happy that is an option though.

I’m trying not to be curious about the meta story as I promised myself that I was done since the story has gone off the rails….but that opening reminded me of AC1 and Brotherhood and Liberation and Ubisoft miiight have gotten their claws back in me. But I will hold thoughts on that until I get further along.

But I haven’t felt this good (or this tense) playing an AC game in so long. I will totally be playing this for a long, long time. I do hope it sells well for Ubisoft but if not they did bake the expansion into all purchases so they will essentially give a complete game no matter what.

Re: Poll: Are You Playing Assassin's Creed Shadows?

Ryu_Niiyama

Waiting on the install/update to finish. Putting my statue in its display case to pass the time.

Didn’t realize it was gonna be two discs.

As this will be my swan’s song AC I went all out. Just bought the collector’s edition guide.

Woo absolutely loving this so far. Loving the cinematic direction they have taken. Already gushed in another comment section about it.

Re: Saints Row Team Thrown Under the Bus: 'They Didn't Know What They Were Building'

Ryu_Niiyama

Saints row never became the GTA killer. And that’s what sunk it. Honestly the reboot was the same on theme as the other games with a more realistic (read:young) cast. I enjoyed it for what it was but considering I am not the target audience for GTA(or even saints row even though I have beaten everything after 3). But if the goal was to beat or match GTA, they were doomed from the start.

Re: Horizon Dev Promises It Isn't Trying to Replace Aloy Actress with AI

Ryu_Niiyama

My primary concern with AI is PII regulation. Not because AI is bad but because people will exploit others to save money. I just attended a conference with AI as a focus and it is ridiculous how very little focus companies and private practices have on protecting PII especially unless forced and even then they are meh about it. (The amount of “this dentist/doctor isn’t securing medical records in accordance with regulations” horror stories is insane) as such AI (the field of study which has been around for decades mind you) itself is a tool. The issue is always people abusing and misusing that tool. Regulations are key, not abandoning AI (for one if we ripped the usage of AI in its non buzzword form out of existence, most industry would grind to a halt).

The real pressing issue that doesn’t involve human greed though is training the models to be accurate.

Re: Rise of the Ronin's PC Port Panned by Media Ahead of Release

Ryu_Niiyama

@get2sammyb Hi Sammy. I suppose I worded my comment poorly. I have been gaming on PC for a few decades (it is just no longer my primary since I need to upgrade my rig), so yes PC has to work on a range of configurations, however there are benchmark configurations that are supposed to work (at least if it is a good port). If a game has issues on a benchmark (that the devs set mind you) then that is a poor port, full stop and no excuses. That’s what it seems like your article is describing (and many of the other issues with PS5 games going to PC) and if that is the case then I stand by my lament. I am not gonna give a dev a pass for poor optimization (if it is noticeable. As I can’t tell most FPS issues.). Especially given the price of the hobby and the price I am willing to put into a gaming rig. Now if I misunderstood your article then that is something different. I have edited my original post for clarity.

Re: Rise of the Ronin's PC Port Panned by Media Ahead of Release

Ryu_Niiyama

Sigh. What is going on with these PC ports? I really want to switch to PC but not if it is worse than the console experience.

Edit: I am expecting that the benchmark specs of a game ported to PC will run well. If it doesn’t that is a bad port and means a worse console experience. Given the cost of a good rig, for me that is inexcusable. I have been gaming on PC for decades but am saving to switch off of xbox and PlayStation to go back to being a PC/Nintendo gamer.

Re: Tekken 8 Boss Katsuhiro Harada Schools Fan Over 'Disrespectful' Response to Anna PS5 DLC

Ryu_Niiyama

Um how is her move set? Fighting games -tekken especially- has costumes for days. A person playing the game for the fighting and not personal touch time material would care about the move set. I still play VF 5 version C because that has the imo best move set for Vanessa Lewis. I still play FS as well. Some dudes are so transparent. Go outside and touch grass.

SF 6 is a whole time skip with almost all the classic characters looking different. I care about the move set (play as a custom character anyway). Capcom changed Birdie’s whole appearance and lampshaded it.

Re: Assassin's Creed Shadows' 'Canon Mode' Makes Fans Ponder the Point of RPG Options

Ryu_Niiyama

Shrugs. They are telling a connected story. So they have to have the version that will connect to the next game. Bioware has shown what happens when you have too many play variables. Nobody has time to make 5 games in one to appease everyone. (Folks will complain anyway.)

The RPG elements keep the “player is a puppet master” aspect in a much better fashion than the animus crashing if you deviated too much from the personality of the assassin. The series has always been about playing a simulator rather that actually being the character you are playing as. This isn’t as big of a deal as some folks are making it out to be. And I say this as a day 1 series player that still prefers the more rigid setup (with animus “glitches”) but I also know the RPG aspects help allow the switching protags in lore so I appreciate that. And for the folks that want “story mode” this accommodates them. For me it just means 3 playthroughs.

Re: This Is Probably the Most You'll Hear About The Elder Scrolls 6 for a While

Ryu_Niiyama

@CallMeDuraSouka Heh. Time flies so fast in gaming. I am cautiously optimistic. ESO has done a lot with lore expansion so I feel like they have more seeds to work with.

I enjoyed Starfield for what it was…although I do hope the main story gets real closure via an expansion. A lot of the things people didn’t like (the NG plus mechanic or the planet exploration) I do like. So aside from resource mining being a gamble (which I wouldn’t mind if the game were smaller), my only real concern was the stripped down looting. Any other quibbles I have are minor and easily fixed by mods when I pick it up for PC in a few years.

Re: Talking Point: Has the Market for AA Games on PS5 Really Disappeared?

Ryu_Niiyama

I would say yes in the sense that people aren’t buying these games. However I feel gaming needs these games to survive.

I am sure some of it is sales expectations adjustments need to be made but the big publishers need to be able to greenlight their smaller studios to make games and not shut them down after each one or stop making those games.

That being said I am loving the AA space. Big publishers are making fun games (Zelda:EoW, Prince of Persia) medium Publishers are making fun games (Banishers), and indies are making fun games (I am loving Coral island…which is still in active development). The problem is it feels like only Nintendo maybe capcom and indies with kickstarter money can afford to just make those games snd not fire everyone or pivot away from making more of them in the first place.

Game development is still too expensive imo and we don’t have enough stable indie devs to make consistently good to great lower budget games. So we still need big publishers to fill that void but for them it is more risk. Feels like a perfect storm of cost (including salaries), shareholder expectations, consumer expectations, and dev time. And it is punching a hole in the AA gaming boat.

Re: Sony Japan Studio Closed Because AA Market 'Disappeared', Says Shu Yoshida

Ryu_Niiyama

@3Above love that game. Still working through it. I didn’t grow up with the original POP so it has been fun playing the return to that gameplay style.

As much as I hate the closures I am grateful that the studios got to put out these games in the first place. The gaming populace is so fickle so some games being a one and done is better than nothing sometimes.

Re: Sony Japan Studio Closed Because AA Market 'Disappeared', Says Shu Yoshida

Ryu_Niiyama

I want to say I disagree but the sales numbers prove this sentiment right. People complain about closures but weren’t buying games. A lot of people get mad when a big publisher makes a smaller game (even if the game is good) because they feel like it is taking a massive game from them instead of being a way to bring in revenue, train newer staff, increase profit and market share so they get more budget for the big games while giving consumers more good games to play. Indies are getting better but imo there aren’t enough consistent studios to make up for the loss of the smaller but high quality games. Here’s hoping more space gets carved out for these types of games to flourish again.

Re: Marvel's Spider-Man 2's Performance on PC Has Not Been Amazing

Ryu_Niiyama

This is my only issue with Sony on PC. Since I only buy PS systems to play exclusives on I want sony to invest in the PC ecosystem as that means one less box to buy (slowly trying to go back to Nintendo/PC instead of buy everything). However hearing the ports are bad is disheartening. I haven’t bought spiderman 2 because I wanted to get it on PC but I don’t know if I should wait for more patches or not. I feel like sony will begin to use their poor ports as an excuse to say the PC market doesn’t want PlayStation games.
