I've had some dissatisfactions for some of the disservice Playstation has done in the previous and current generation, but this latest one may have been that straw that broke the camel's back for me and for those that are relentless. So for that PSN blackout, I'll move my F2P games on mobile for the duration and participate.
Especially when I realized that buying physical copy of games bnew from our local retailers is roughly "$10" cheaper to buy than digital on the Playstation Store.
@Rich33 with how they pretty much made optional the disc drive on the Pro model plus a handheld PS6 on the horizon AND their reputation right now, I'm in doubt whether there will be indeed at least an add-on accessory disc drive next generation. With how things are going, I feel like Playstation is on the course of telling it's playerbase to just keep their PS5s for those who have a collection of physical copies of PS4/5 games. While yes it's a plus if the PS6 will indeed have an add-on drive, but the fact that my Playstation physical games collection won't grow more on 2028 is enough to not justify a PS6 purchase at launch. I know I'll eventually buy one in the future but with very limited spending as I'm not in a habit of spending huge sums for intangible contents, even if it's a game I'm looking forward to.
@Rich33 I say good luck with that. Playstation's "monumental" announcement pretty much made me not look forward to getting a PS6. Even if it's halfway through the PS6 generation, unless it's very reasonably priced by then, I'd still won't consider one just yet either.
If my PS5 breaks, I'd just hunt for another PS5 or even the Pro model even if there's a PS6 already out there. Especially when most of my library are games on disc, my only digital games are F2P. Lol
@Ralizah tbh, it's not just in the gaming industry. Almost every business do their own "formulaic" philosophies in their products. Many tried to risk it by showing new things but many also failed to stick the landing in the business and met harsh consequences. Look at how saturated it is in the smartphone business.
I just feel like most businesses target the newer generations that prefer to have safe "iterations" more than the "ever changing and unique" that is preferred by older generations. So of course they'd cater to the newer ones because they are more abundant than the older ones.
Appalling behavior. This Wolverine game may look like a "safe" kind of game, but better that than be a "bad" original game. Because I can't imagine an "original" Wolverine game could be without the slashing and the violence tbh.
@ShadowRJ they just don't wanna bother what they did with the likes of Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition anymore, which had 2 discs that included the Burning Shores dlc expansion.
Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut had the expansion included on the disc when I bought it for my old PS4. I was thinking of selling my existing GoY copy to a friend who has yet to play it and go for the Complete Edition thinking it would be similar to GoT. But I guess l get to keep my existing copy because the new ones are basically the same one I got, only difference is that the update 2.0 will automatically unlock the expansion for the "Complete" edition while I still need to cash in $15 to unlock it for my existing copy.
Yes the Complete (more like incomplete) Edition box art would have looked good alongside my copy of GoT Director's Cut but eh.... What a shame, Playstation. 👎
@Jacko11 hell, Playstation itself didn't mentioned it either. What I found on the PS blog post is just a very discreet asterisk on the promotional banner, but the post itself is basically what Push Square reflected here.
Playstation really making sure physical option is forgotten, in a bad way.
@Vaako007 with PS toying with the idea of dynamic pricing on PS Store, seems it's already a sign of them preparing for the digital-only future. And a sign it ain't going to be a cheap future for console gaming either.
I don't even consider above $20 for an intangible copy of a game to be "money's worth". Especially on a platform that doesn't guarantee you keep your digital library for good. What they can do with movies, they can do so with the digital games too.
Well glad I never became an audience of any of Rockstar's games. And I feel the console collapse is about to happen once it's all digital now and the upfront cost is way higher than it used to be. Consoles were supposed to be cheaper than PCs and has the ability to play games on a drive. Now those two will be gone by the next generation and the consoles will just literally be an expensive fixed component pc running customised Unix OS with a closed ecosystem.
Also, I don't understand why some are adamant in mocking others that only wish to preserve the existing option for gaming that fulfills our collecting hobbies.
@XenonKnight for your last sentence, that's the plan. As for the next generation, my enthusiasm for it is as low as my expectations. And it's "very low" as we speak. Sony really killed it for me.
@ButteredCrumpet we'll see, but it's fair. Emotions just run high especially when one of your source of positive enthusiasm is being cut off in a short period of time. And time flies fast nowadays. Lol
As for supporting digital only content, idk. Digital content that amounts to thousands or so in our local currency is not money's worth for me.
Sure I can just go Nintendo since it's pretty prominent here as well as Playstation, but the latter just simply has the offerings I find that suits my enthusiasm better than the former. Plus I'm not sold with the game-key cards approach. It feels like a placebo. And for the record, many of the games in my collection do run on the console well without the need for internet connection, aside from GT7 (since I'm quite a car enthusiast as well especially when it comes to JDMs and European exotics).
And while yes I do play some F2P stuff (pretty obvious from my pfp and username here) but I managed to get through it well without dropping some cash on it yet.
But yeah, I don't expect this "emotion" to leave anytime soon. All I can say for now is... We'll see.
@XenonKnight it's a forsaken country that's for sure. I have zero hopes it will fix itself anytime soon. It will forever be stuck in such a cycle imo. Because no matter how good performing the person put in charge, someone will still drag such person down. The crab mentality here is just so severe, sadly.
Might as well save up now and try to migrate out. Lol
@ButteredCrumpet and I collect the games. experiencing the game is just a part of the fun experience. Being able to hold and feel the game you bought and be part of the collection is a big part of the experience. It makes one feel what's been accomplished with hard earned money. Something intangible like a digital download accomplishes nothing like that. It feels like throwing money in air for just a fraction of the experience.
And no, I don't plan to sell my collection nor buy second hand. If possible, I buy the LE of a game I like to explore and experience.
It's a collection and experience I've always wanted and I feel like it's ending prematurely.
@ButteredCrumpet because it feels personal. As someone who just started into this "fun" hobby a decade ago after finally gaining some financial stability in an ASEAN country where private companies monopolize even basic necessities like electricity and water.
I hate you, Playstation. I hate you so much for this, and I never expected I'd be saying it this early especially when I just started this gaming hobby halfway through the PS4 generation. It's a damn shame, and upsetting.
Not right now because the media that is about to be axed is still widely available. But come PS6, then we will see what it can bring them. Hopefully an underwhelming launch.
@LurkerNoMore better be wasted on something where physical copy enthusiasts can continue to engage on their platform rather than on failed live services that don't appeal to many of the playerbase.
The money is better "wasted" on something that at least give a sense of goodwill rather than be wasted on predatory software the playerbase didn't asked for.
how do we engage the gamers? Easy. By continuing to offer what's currently available right now, tangible game mediums that includes the game data on it. Part of the fun in gaming is knowing and feeling you bought something especially when it's an expensive title. It's fun to be able to afford Limited Edition of the games one looks forward to play. Something more than just you can see with your eyes, but also feel with your hands.
"Play Has No Limits" is a hypocrisy slogan indeed. Especially when soon it's going to be very "limiting" to actually own games by then. :/
@add286 idk anymore other than say it's a ridiculous future. It's a shame since I really wanted to have such a gaming collection as part of a hobby. But only a decade ago did I achieved financial stability (our economy sucks badly, unfavorable for low to even middle class) that is enough for me to finally start my hobbies that included video games. Though my current collection isn't that big since I truly purchase and collect what I like strictly. I'm a collector, not a hoarder.
Our country really didn't got into the video games industry officially until the PS3/360 generation so it's difficult to even find ones below that generation here.
Here's hoping Nintendo continues to provide even though I already hate their idea of game-key cards. At least there I can continue my collection albeit more selective than ever.
@add286 and I'd love to see a strong refusal of this tide for once. Consumers had accepted the tides so many times now that companies see consumers as gullible and manageable/controllable, and why so many good things are long gone now. Music and movies became temporary licenses that can be revoked from your digital library even when you already purchased them. Heck, your entire digital movie library can be revoked and you can do nothing about it because many agreed with their essay-like ToCs.
We're nearly dystopian now because of these "go with the flow" shenanigans.
Yes the convenience saved many people time. But did people used those free time more conservatively? I doubt it since we won't be telling people to "touch grass" if they did, honestly. I'd rather have less convenience on certain things, at least it's making some "touch grass" as they head out of their houses to spend ample time after picking up your item of choice.
For all we know, the digital game codes may not even be inside plastic boxes anymore when 2028 comes. Just "environmentally friendly, easily dissolvable" thin cardboard gift cards with the game art and title over it.
Oh great, looking forward to collecting 'one-and-done' strips of cardboard with game art on it at least that would make me feel like I bought something, not akin to buying "air". :/
Seriously, how does many see value in these intangible offerings. If convenience is the only reason, then it fails to make me see it's money's worth.
It truly sucks to be in the hobby of gaming that includes collecting, especially when you consider the game as the main part of the merchandise of the favorite title you collect from. The gaming landscape is disappointingly stopping faster as a collector's haven for hobbyists. I guess it's why PS5 Wolverine won't even release a physical Collector's Edition. Just a standard copy on disc.
When streaming becomes the main push of this industry in the near future and it will affect the digital distribution of games, it will be the time to "get over it" for the "digital enthusiasts". Lol
How I wish at least one employee within their organization would snitch with information enough to fuel the fire even more. They deserve to be flamed for such. I just hate the fact that PS remain mum to the whole debacle without even a hint of attempting to quench some fire. The situation is already bad enough as is, but not even as much as a word of assurance to de-escalate the issue is diabolical. PS severely deserves all of these ill-intent towards them.
@Zuljaras they can state their own fact however they like. But they shouldn't also expect those genuinely affected to dismiss the situation that easily, especially when Playstation itself continues to be mute about addressing the situation.
@Zuljaras it only means they are not affected by the situation. A person can come out as "indifferent" or "not caring" if it doesn't concern them. It is what it is.
@zskillz6891 that feeling when your wallet balance went down big and you never felt like you bought anything. You just see it on the screen any say "that's it?" after seeing your $60-80 flew away in place of a revocable digital content. So yeah you could say my gripe is more than just affecting my collecting hobby, it's also about securing your own copy that you know can't be revoked. I just feel like a digital library is not money's worth.
And for the record, hoarding is not equal to collecting. Can't believe some sees it as synonymous. Hoarding is impulsive, disorganized and pretty random with no sense of direction or emotion. Hence why it's a "disorder". Hoarders just pretty much grab anything on the shelf and buy it regardless of what it is.
While collecting is a passionate, organized hobby focused on curated themes like anime and certain games. It has a direction and emotion attached to it.
One buys a copy of the game they like and make it a keepsake to the collection. It gets some sentimental value, it presents a form of accomplishment.
I'm a collector myself, particularly those related to anime and games which include select merchandise like figurines and games in physical format. It sucks for me because I'm mainly game on PS and I just started the collecting hobby less than a decade ago.
The giants of the gaming industry only understands the feelings of their shareholders. Nothing scares them more than their shareholders throwing a tantrum when their shares aren't growing any bigger.
That aside, yeah I don't expect any form of digital ownership to happen from them. They want to avoid us having a back up of their "precious" licenses that they are paranoid to think that others will exploit for digital piracy.
Welp...only reasonable step here is to just make the most of it. I might just stick with F2P games where I don't really spend much money on, just time. I'm not spending large sums of money for an intangible gaming library.
@RoomWithaMoose Honkai series fanbase carry it, which are players of Honkai Gakuen 2 and Honkai Impact 3rd. Even I'm part of such fanbase though through HI3 at most. Many play it for the near AFK style of gameplay and story lore (which many from the franchise fanbase appreciate particularly the parallels of it to the two Honkai games). Building characters can be less tedious on HSR too compared to genshin and ZZZ imo.
And, believe it or not, such fanbase is the reason why HSR still takes in 8-digit revenues on mobile alone even during its "weak" patches. Meanwhile ZZZ fluctuates between 8 to 7-digit revenue on mobile and is reported to be performing less than Genshin and HSR. Hence why ZZZ gets released on many platforms almost too quickly while Genshin and HSR seems to be in no hurry to expand it's reach due to their consistency in revenue generations.
I'm certain this digitizer of physical copy of games will reintroduce the online check-in to make sure you still "own" the game or to make sure someone else possess that game now. It has its advantages but the repercussions will be that consoles will now require frequent online check ins to make sure the "license" is still in your possession. And that would mean a potential "bricking" of consoles when it fails to go online at certain times.
@Th3solution because Xbox has its own problems to deal with, and it's an internal problem to boot. Meanwhile Playstation is dealing with its player base at best. Up to you which is a heavier situation. As for Nintendo, they already paved the way to a less than stellar physical copy of games via game key cards that are useful as long as the game license hasn't been revoked yet from the eShop or the eShop itself on the Switch 2 hasn't lost support.
@MrGawain even with Nintendo just using game key cards on Switch 2? Where they are useful as long as the game on the eShop is still available until the license is revoked?

Re: 'They May As Well Eliminate the Hardware Too': Japanese Dev Says Sony 'Doesn't Understand' the Feelings of Fans
@Zuljaras it only means they are not affected by the situation. A person can come out as "indifferent" or "not caring" if it doesn't concern them. It is what it is.
Re: 'They May As Well Eliminate the Hardware Too': Japanese Dev Says Sony 'Doesn't Understand' the Feelings of Fans
Re: 'They May As Well Eliminate the Hardware Too': Japanese Dev Says Sony 'Doesn't Understand' the Feelings of Fans
Re: 'They May As Well Eliminate the Hardware Too': Japanese Dev Says Sony 'Doesn't Understand' the Feelings of Fans
Re: Sales Data Paints a Very Grim Picture for Physical PS5 Games in the USA
Welp...only reasonable step here is to just make the most of it. I might just stick with F2P games where I don't really spend much money on, just time. I'm not spending large sums of money for an intangible gaming library.
Re: Two of PS5's Biggest Games Will Crossover This Winter
Re: PS5's Physical Disc Debacle Will Attract More Anger if This Xbox Rumour Is True
Re: 'PS5 Has Put a Dampener on Gaming': 45% of Enthusiasts 'Seriously Considering' Leaving Sony for PC
Re: 'PS5 Has Put a Dampener on Gaming': 45% of Enthusiasts 'Seriously Considering' Leaving Sony for PC
@MrGawain even with Nintendo just using game key cards on Switch 2? Where they are useful as long as the game on the eShop is still available until the license is revoked?
