Let’s be honest the blackout is nothing more but social media performative outrage. The blackout was never gonna hurt Sony business.

It’s easy to think your particular internet bubble is the whole entire world.

All I hope for is that when people talk about how this blackout has failed (because we all know it isn’t going to succeed) that it will be thought about as a poorly thought out campaign from people who had good intentions, but was leading more from optimism and hope.

What I hope does NOT happen is for people to go “see the people who want physical games are just a VOCAL MINORITY (in a snarky, insulting way) and this blackout is proof”

Third-party sellers are marking it up by $400 and I bet it's still selling.

@ShadowRJ I agree 100%. The blackout is for a positive reason (keeping discs around) that would help a lot of people and wouldn't hurt anyone. Really, it's silly to be happy about the blackout "failing" since it'll only lead to people losing options and not gaining anything in return.

I should sell mine while it's in high demand. Along with my physical PS4/PS5 game collection. Buy a top of the line gaming PC and pocket the rest of the money.

This makes a total mockery of so-called industry experts who think next gen consoles sold for a grand or more offering only incremental improvements would be in trouble.

People are easy to manipulate. For decades we've been buying consoles every gen just because they can make games prettier even though the games themselves have stagnated in design and execution.

PS6 can sell for £1000 and all you'd have to tell people is that it can play GTAVI at 4K 60fps or more.

Sony said they're purposely not making much PS5/PS5 Pro stock because they get more money by not selling PS5 hardware so it would be more helpful to have actual numbers attached. Selling out of PS5 Pro consoles isn't anything special if there's only a few available per store for example.

That a game without a PS5 Pro optimized mode is getting people to pay extra for the $900 console I would argue is an example of unsavvy (i.e. stupid) consumers at their finest.

And in this case, it’s an overwhelming majority, as in it won’t even hurt their business to make no concessions. All that can be said has been said. So the people still holding out hope just look foolish to the rest of us at this point which is why it’s devolving into snark and jeering.

@For-Kier The reality is markets are ever-changing, and there's really no reason to jilt any part of your consumer base lest you might regret it in due time. Physical books, music, and movies all saw a death just to resurge in recent years — hard to see physical ever really dying regardless of the medium.

And Sony's yet to explain exactly why it's too difficult for them to keep making physical games. We can pretty easily guess it's either about marketplace control or whatever AI nonsense they're converting their manufacturing wing into. Such inspiring reasoning makes one wonder why we're not collectively snarky towards Sony... Either way, no matter what stats anyone brings up, physical does sell. Was selling. It was never a charity; physical made money, and it makes no sense to act like this is what the market dictated.

@ShadowRJ I understand the intention but it always just the true all the reports, all the data, all the sign showed it was always a small group of people. Not saying what Sony is doing isn’t bad but it was the inevitable. Look at where all the money for the industry is coming from, (take this with a salt I don’t have the whole numbers and everything) almost 50% of income is from MTX. If I snap that out of existence, then we’re going to see a video game similar to the 80s.

@Friendly I think it’s more likely the average consumer considers the PlayStation as a minor hobby and is worried about mortgages, contributing to their retirement, and advancing their career and has little time to worry about software licensing and physical discs.

The real irony is some of the digital master race, who are quite happy to patronise and belittle fellow gamers who are trying to do something to indicate to Playstation they are unhappy that physical discs are being ended prematurely, would whine like complete babies should any of their digital games be delisted and removed from their libraries.

We are all different and have different priorities and that's okay. Just don't pretend your own opinions should be everyone else's. You don't care about digital games, that's fine. You have no right to tell someone else they shouldn't care about physical games.

Also, people parrot basic facts about digital sales. I wouldn't be at all surprised if in the 85% digital sales includes ps+ subscriptions as well as micro transactions.

The only way to accurately determine the split of digital and physical would be to compare games sold digitally and physically. As we have seen physical games sell significantly better in Europe and the UK, compared to the US.

I have lots of digital games but so long as Sony provide a mechanism for accessing my physical games on PS6, that may be fine.

Finally, those of us who care about having physical discs, the black-out isn't the end of the road. It's the start. Speaking personally I now have zero interest in PS6 and I have bought every playstation console to date, on launch day from PS3 onwards.

I will use my consumer power and spend my money on whichever platform I decide suits me best.

The blackout is a joke. It was never going to achieve anything. If people really want a ps5 Pro or the ps6 they will pay whatever they are comfortable with. Its their money to do with what they please and they are demonstrating this because the ps5 Pro is selling out according to this article. I've not seen one boycott (in gaming) that's worked. Not one. Hogwarts legacy? Nothing came of that except causing a lot of arguments and pushsquare didn't help much either. There's always going to be people calling for a boycott of something and social media just gives these clowns too much of a voice.

If the Pro can sell out so quick at 900 then the the 1k price tag on next generation might not be to much of an ask if that's the price. You can be sure this hasn't been overlooked by PS either. The new Xbox sold out in 30 seconds as well at £700, my mate got one the jammy git. Blackout? What's blackout? New game or something?

I’m genuinely hoping Sony pushes the PS6 into the $1500–$2000 bracket and uses it as the moment to kill game purchases entirely. The whole ‘pay once and own it’ concept is a relic. Development costs are massive, and the future is streaming‑only access behind a monthly fee.
I’d willingly pay $150 or more each month for unlimited streaming for PS6 on my 100Gbit connection. They could make it cheaper for those who can't afford it by maybe asking them to watch 10 minutes of un-skippable ads before they can play and then 5 minutes every 30 minutes of gameplay. That seems fair.
A high monthly fee and ad revenue will mean more investment from Sony into the best gaming experiences and totally do away with piracy and the second hand market or even refunds! It's win-win for Sony and the real fans.
They could maybe split a game like GTA VI into different seasons so that people have to stay subscribed for longer or miss out.
Here’s hoping they announce that shift sooner rather than later.

I believe a lot of the people expressing outrage and calling for the boycotts aren't even in the PlayStation ecosystem in the first place. That's why it's so easy for them to claim they're doing their part. They weren't a part of it in the first place.

I did wonder at the time if the £959 (plus disc drive) I paid for the 30th Pro would be silly, but it feels like a relative bargain now.

Weeks ago I saw that my local electronics chain ran out of xbsx and the only offers they had were from third party sellers. The cheapest xbsx available was €1575 (that's £1347 or $1824). WTF
Needles to say, this finally made me rethink my resistance to ps5pro and I got one for a regular price (yes, I should have done this two years ago, but back then I thought ps6 would be here by 2027 and the AI crooks have not yet gone out and bought all memory chips production years in advance. Now I think we won't see ps6 before the end of 2029).

@KoopaTheGamer Apart from all the costs involved in making and distributing Physical media which is not really adequate as a delivery system anymore as some games exceed the capacity. Discs are purely a delivery system as NO game runs from the disc because discs are too slow - that's why you download and install to the SSD so games will load quickly, fast travel is fast etc.

A Publisher has to make an order for discs to be printed, send early beta code before the game is due to release and will have a 'minimum' order size they have to pay for. Say they have to order 1m as a minimum and they only sell 300k because the vast majority bought Digitally. They still paid money for 700kthey haven't sold so maybe they 'lost' money on Physical - didn't sell enough to be 'profitable' which can then impact the Devs/studio too.

By scrapping Physical, which is really just so Consumers have a bit of plastic 'proof' they bought a Licence, something they have to put in a slot to show they still have the Key to unlock the Software on their SSD, a valid licence to play, they save a LOT of money in manufacturing, distribution etc as well as no unsold stock, no 'used' stock affecting the sales.

As costs of manufacturing as well as the fuel costs and third party people (wholesalers, distributors, retailers etc) that also want to be paid, want to make money, the fewer and fewer sales don't make financial sense and can end up costing them money. It may now (or at least the trajectory is heading to) be at a point where they could lose '80%' of those that ONLY buy Physical and be better off because they haven't had all those costs and lost more of their profit margin per game sold and those 20% that move to Digital more than make up for it.

Its not as if Digital doesn't have advantages over Physical and those that have Physical can still play their Physical games on the Hardware they purchased them for. Not one was 'advertised or sold' for PS6 and maybe you can't bring your 'Physical' library forward via BC like you can your Digital Library attached to your Digital Playstation account and with talks of a PS6 Handheld, your PS4/PS5 digital games would like run well on all-digital Handheld.

Anyway, your point about it not 'hurting' anyone is wrong because it can and likely does hurt the Publisher and Developer. That's 'additional' costs they have to try and sell more to cover, unsold games are still 'paid' for and hurt them and lets be honest here, the internet is a far more efficient and cheaper method of distributing both Licence and Software - it can also distribute the entire game and most up to date build of that game whenever you as a Customer buy. Discs will always have the Beta code and may not even have the full software inc on it.

There are now reports that Sony is reconsidering the timing of their digital cut off point.....Vocal physical advocates -> market opportunity for Xbox with heir announced strategy -> competition pressure on Sony.

If it is true, then nobody can claim the outrage had no impact

This means nothing unless we know how many units they had in stock. PS5 was also sold out a couple of times from 2020 to 2023 because they didn't have a steady supply.

This also means nothing because we have scalper bots going after RAM every 6s on those same websites, do you really think this wasn't also the work of scalpers buying consoles ahead of GTA6 launch?

@Cry_Zero It's because most people are buying games digitally and have been doing so for a very long time. I'm all for fighting for digital ownership, but the focus is in the wrong place. Discs are not the solution.

@BAMozzy We know for a fact that the minimum print amounts are not counted in millions. Otherwise Limited Run Games or Super Rare Games could not operate. There is no official data (that I could find) but it seems like minimum print sizes are counted in thousands. There have been plenty of cases where even big publishers like Capcom have ordered relatively small amount of physical copies (Pragmata as an example) that have ran out. So clearly there is demand for physical copies, publishers just try to get every penny they can get by forcing people to go digital.

Anyway, I'm not claiming that physical copies make publishers more money than digital copies. But as a consumer, I care the most about what's best for us. And I think having physical copies is also beneficial for the publishers since it's one more delivery method for games. Convenience is the biggest salespoint of digital games, but physical games can also be convenient in some cases (for example, if I want to buy a game as a gift to someone). There are also benefits in terms of discovery. I may see a physical game in a store that I would've never heard of otherwise (especially since PS Store is a mess and full of shovelware).

@ShadowRJ @ThatOtherNewGuy I don't believe that rumour but if somehow it turned out to be true, the mystery publisher is most likely CDPR with Witcher 4. The lengths they've gone to ensure fully on the cart Switch ecosystem physical (32GB cart for Switch 1 Witcher 3 + DLC, 64GB cart for Switch 2 Cyberpunk + DLC) would suggest they're at the least not happy with Sony's decision to kill off discs.

@KoopaTheGamer That was purely for demonstration purposes - I don't know what the Minimum run would likely be for a AAA studio and don't forget that often costs go up if you don't buy in bulk.

The point I was trying to make is that there is a cost involved to manufacturing and distributing Physical media which has increased and that whilst 'some' may well sell out their copies, others certainly don't and for a Publisher publishing numerous games a year, several 100k on this game and several 100k on that game not 'selling' - at least not at full price - leavers them with stock they've paid for.

The Internet for example has far less costs involved in getting that software to their Customers, its not limited in capacity compared to discs and they can deliver the latest and/or complete build without having additional cost. They aren't losing money to 'distributors' as their fuel costs increase adding to the 'cost', not having wholesalers or Physical retailers taking their Cut. I don't know how it breaks down, but that $70 game isn't ALL going to the Publisher with some of that charge going to retailers but if they are not having to spend out additional money on producing something that is 'useless' from a Gaming perspective because its far too slow for Gaming and is ONLY used to get the Software to the SSD - which Internet can do more efficiently and at much lower cost, maybe even faster too as it has a higher data transfer speed. The ONLY reason you have to keep putting the disc in is to prove you still own that bit of Plastic, still have a valid key to unlock access to the game you have on your Hardware - its NOT running that game.

There is a Cost to develop games, advertise them etc and the higher the cost, the 'more' games they have to sell to recuperate those costs. Cutting out 'unnecessary' cost such as producing Physical media that also means they don't get as much money back per game sold, also means they could lose sales due to used markets etc also means they need to sell more games to be successful which can make the difference between a Studio staying open these days or losing staff, being closed down or let go.

The ONLY benefit is really that you as a customer can 'sell' your licence. Digital licences can be more beneficial if you want to bring your games forward or play on different hardware. If you upgrade to PS5 Pro or PS6, maybe a PS Portable/handheld in the future, your Digital games could be accessible - if you can't buy a PS5 Pro disc drive because of stock availability you can't play your disc games unless you buy digitally.

The demand isn't really there - if Capcom are ordering relatively small runs (which still have costs and don't make a difference to actual gaming as games don't play from discs - and streaming would be far better because you wouldn't be waiting for the game to load the data from disc, wouldn't be waiting for textures to load and then pop in, wouldn't be waiting for an area to load every time you fast travel), that tells you Capcom don't expect to sell a lot of copies Physically and across ALL Platforms (PC, Xbox and Playstation) they aren't selling a lot Physically and its declined year on year.

Its not like Bluray Movies which play directly from Bluray Disc and offer a 'Higher Quality' experience than Streaming, its not like CD or Vinyl that offer a higher Quality or 'different' audio experience because these all play from the Physical media.

Whether you buy on disc or digitally, the game has to be Downloaded and installed on the Hardware to run. The ONLY difference is that the licence is attached to your Profile with Digital or embedded on a bit of plastic that you have to keep putting in the slot to unlock access to that software. Its not adequate for gaming and barely adequate as a delivery method.

They 'could' supply games and licences on USB stick and you plug that into your USB 3.0 drive and that has the Data Transfer speed to 'run' games directly from, but gamers won't pay the cost of games manufactured and distributed that way.

Its not that I am against Physical, its that discs themselves are not an adequate system because they don't deliver the 'best/latest' build and often don't even deliver the full build so you need to download content, patches etc from the Internet anyway. Whilst you may 'feel' like you own something, they can still stop you from playing games/content you bought - look at Destiny or Marvels Avengers and even if you can 'sell' your licence, who's going to buy licences for dead games or just a fraction of the content because all you can play is the token short Single Player (if it had one). There are a LOT of Co-op or multi-player only games that rely on PS+ to 'work' so even if you own the disc, you have to keep paying Subs to play those games. If you decide to jump to Switch because it still sells something Physical and expect to keep playing your PS5 library without paying PS+, how many games will you lose access to?

The problem isn't really the loss of Physical because you can still play the games in exactly the same way, no loss of quality, no difference to Physical, you just can't sell/trade that Licence and the fact that Consoles are a 'locked' system with Store Monopoly and Sub fees they could push prices up because its their system, their store, their network or 'block' you from playing the games you bought (disc or digital), there is 'fear' but having a disc drive will not change the System etc and its more the anti-consumer aspect of Console gaming, of locked platforms - PC has been All-Digital for years without the same fear or anger at lack of Physical releases...

Not only because of the discs but they want better digital ownership aswell. People are just too dumb to understand that the company is the one that needs to be antagonized, not fellow gamers

@Drago201 Didn't the CEO say they don't need to chase new customers, that could explain the low levels of Pro stock, the plan is to monetise existing customers from what was reported. I'm not sure if being part of an eco system like that is a good thing

@messimagician that's exactly what they said also the cost of manufacturing has increased drastically there not really interested in making a lot more ps5s there looking at how to keep manufacturing costs of ps6 as low as possible and how to even market the thing given how expensive everything is

@messimagician They won't be paying out for the production and distribution of Physical media saving them money. They won't have 'unsold' stock they paid for saving them money, they get 'more' per sale of a game because they aren't paying to make discs, print inserts, ship them with distributors and increased fuel costs, not losing part of the sale price to covering those costs, the third party profits (wholesalers and physical retailers), not losing sales to the used market etc.

They will get more per sale of Digital so if they lose say 80% of their Physical buyers, they can still make just as much, if not more from converting 20% to Digital purchasers and if they aren't paying out for all the Physical manufacturing and distribution costs, they don't have to sell as many games to cover their costs.

Gamers will likely buy the new system because that's where the new games they want to play will release, that's where their Digital Profile with their Trophies, their friends, their PS+ Digital library , their favourite IPs are. They know they may lose 'some' gamers who will perhaps become just 'retro' gamers because the modern Hardware is ALL Digital - PC's are All Digital and I expect the next Xbox will be too. MS is basically Digital now with PC, Series S and Game Pass - as well as Play Anywhere, Quick Resume and Stream your Own games meant for Digital purchases. Their Disc to Digital initiative too seems to be to bring Physical media forward to next gen Digital only Hardware, not leave it behind or expect gamers to re-purchase digitally...

Point is that it saves the Publishers and Hardware manufacturers money and the internet is a better distribution option than Physical, discs are 'obsolete' in gaming terms due to the fact they are far too slow for games to run from them and they'll make more per game sold without needing to raise prices and reduce their costs so will need to sell 'fewer' games to be profitable.

This is rather bad thing. Consider this:
If they see it sells for $900 (even $1200 in some places) then you already can be sure where PS6 price begins. It will not be lower. Even if memory and parts gets cheaper - price around $1200 remains.

@Olskeezy people like being apart of a big cultural moment. We used to stand in line for midnight movie premieres even though the movie would eventually come out on dvd/vhs. It's fun to be apart of the conversation as it's happening not jumping in with a red hot opinion months after the fact.

I imagine the next "physical" to disappear once it's all-digital now is the console itself when storefronts sways buyers into a streaming subscription when the time comes. Especially when the hardware becomes "too expensive" enough to be even more of a luxury.

@RoomWithaMoose I think the only thing we can say for certain is that it is Pro enhanced, because that’s on the PS store listing for the game itself.

Until we’ve seen it side by side who knows what it’ll actually mean. Based on Pro versions to date and the type of game it is my guess is that it won’t make a difference to frame rates but will mean a slightly cleaner image and perhaps a bit more consistency/fidelity. PSSR2 should take care of that fairly reliably now.

Glad i bought my pro day one as this gen seems to be in reverse they just keep going up in price
