Lol it's as expected. Other major outlets and known gaming and tech content creators have blown this news out of proportions. The fuel just keeps coming and Playstation is providing the fuel whether directly or indirectly.
As for me, the reputation is lost. Consider me a disgruntled fan. Lol
@naruball I understand about the court room case, I'm referring to previous steps they made like sending emails to playerbases reminding many of such similar distasteful sentiments.
Though I guess the proper way of saying it is that Push Square publishing this news is what added more fuel to the fire.
Which is why I feel like asking for proper digital ownership rights is a huge hurdle, especially when the majority of the digital-only market is shaped like this where you actually own nothing. GOG may be doing it right but it's pretty obvious that's the reason big publishers aren't flocking to it immediately with new releases.
And sure Sony ain't wrong with what they're saying right now, but damn they either don't know how to read the room or just don't care even if portions of it are still burning right now and every word they say about it just adds more fuel to the fire.
Ah yes, the influence of marketing hype. The reason why some unacceptable business practices are being normalized.
I imagine the next "physical" to disappear once it's all-digital now is the console itself when storefronts sways buyers into a streaming subscription when the time comes. Especially when the hardware becomes "too expensive" enough to be even more of a luxury.
I was already looking forward to the likes of Tides and Metro 2039 (and I guess a bit of Silver Palace) which means the opening night was pretty "uninspiring" to say the least.
Still waiting for Hoyoverse to do a ShiftUp and make a paid full game, particularly something within their Honkaiverse. Come on, Hoyoverse. Make Kiana shine anew through a single player experience for once~
@ButteredCrumpet it's why I'll eventually be more conservative with spending by the time 2028 comes. That or I'm taking my purchases on a platform that continues to satisfy my purchasing preferences. But yeah, it's a bleak future for a hobby such as gaming. Haha
@ButteredCrumpet the only issue with that is piracy. Steam may not be paranoid about it but the rest of the storefronts are, especially Playstation and Nintendo.
Such idea will eventually entice people to just keep copying the game and distribute it for personal gain. Hence why there's no such ownership of games on consoles. Let's say storefronts do improve QoLs to not entice pirates, it will still not deter some to profit off of it personally.
Play-Asia was one of those retailers in Asia that expressed disappointment when Playstation announced the end of games on disc by 2028. Hopefully Play-Asia add more soon. There's still some PS4 rpgs that I've yet to try but already out of print in our local retailers.
As yes, pretty much well said Play-Asia. Especially for me who treats my game purchases as tangible trophies. Physical proof that I was able to afford a pricey game in a place where it is considered a luxury.
@PuppetMaster if that happens to Playstation, the fallout will be on Hideaki Nishino and Hermen Hulst. For chairman Totoki to be even affected, it would need to be a few more divisions within the Sony conglomerate that's feeling the burn. Totoki can just fire Nishino and Hulst if Playstation starts bleeding money. But the chairman himself will most likely stay in power after that.
So at the moment only Playstation is on the crossfire, and the ball is on Nishino and Hulst.
Tbh, Kaz Hirai was the better performer of Sony. The man literally did all he can to revive the entire Sony brand out of the financial crisis, not just the downfall of Playstation during the PS3 generation.
I guess I can consider myself "not monetized enough". Ever since I got into their Playstation ecosystem I've never subbed for a PS+. Tbf all I've ever played are single player titles on physical format and never bothered with multiplayer. I am playing some F2P stuff on it but those never required a subscription from them anyways.
Well good luck with Playstation in enticing me to get monetized through their planned future. Lol
@PuppetMaster it won't be easy as compared to replacing a ceo from a division only. As long as the board and shareholders are in favor with the chairman of the conglomerate, he or she stays there. And so far, Totoki is giving them the money they need. Lol
@EYEBALL it honestly got nothing to do with location now and more on who's at the helm. I mean a Japanese is already at the helm of Playstation as a whole but look at where it's at now. I know it's from the legacy of Jim Ryan but imo, poor live service pursuit aside, he did pretty well than the current one in the helm right now.
I guess this is the mindset of a former CFO of Sony promoted to Chairman of the entire Sony conglomerate. The same man that sold half of the Sony home entertainment and audio equipment business to Chinese brand TCL and giving it the reigns of hardware manufacturing of their Bravia TVs and audio while Sony just lays back and provide only the "expertise". So yeah, his generation of Sony is now less on "tangible things" and more on Entertainment now that includes digital gaming and streaming for movies and anime.
I can see why of course, it's pretty obvious. Just telling.
@Cjam36 Totoki is the Chairman of the entire Sony conglomerate, not just Playstation. Totoki is the boss of Playstation CEO Nishino. He's the "entertainment gives more money than equipment" guy. The same one that sold half of the Sony home entertainment and audio equipment business to the Chinese company TCL. So yeah, he's why Sony and Playstation are stirring it's customers to a digital and streaming era when it comes to their games, movie and anime.
@ShadowRJ anything but a code in a big plastic box. Since that's already their sloppiest and "cheapskate" approach to gamers that only want a decent collection of games that can be played as well.
@ShadowRJ I doubt they'd go for that but I can see how that can work when the PS6 expected form factor will be a stationary one and a handheld one. A "game key card" can work on both via a small slot like the Switch/2.
@ShadowRJ a code in a box made to store discs is like a slap in the face and an insult to game collectors. Might as well turn it into a "TCG"-like gift card. Lol
@Flaming_Kaiser true. But no matter. It won't sway my preferences, and my view towards digital content won't change. I've hold off many times on buying games (particularly sequels) all because it's just a digital release like DL: The Beast (I own DL and DL2 in physical format and enjoyed them both). I just don't see an all-digital gaming as money's worth. It's like losing large sums for just a portion of the fun in gaming.
Reading through here just make me feel powerless, just as much as no matter how much I buy bnew games in physical format to become my collection, it's not powerful enough to convince Playstation to not end support for physical copies of games in less than 2 years. I just honestly feel like it's too early for them to do so. Especially when I just started all this in 2016.
Hopefully Nintendo still does it's thing by the time Playstation ends such support by 2028. I'll definitely continue gaming and collecting on team red by then.
@PuppetMaster I'm honestly waiting myself for the Switch 2 revision that hopefully has a better battery life. I did that with the first Switch and the ver.2 model battery life made it a much better handheld than the Lite tbh. OLED is a bonus but not a must.
@Rich33 having an optional drive is already incentive enough tbh. But it won't mean I'd be eager for a PS6 just for that. Sure it will allow me to play my existing PS4/5 collection but it will no longer have the option to add it's dedicated games to expand my collection. So yeah, my excitement for a PS6 (even a handheld of it) is null. I'll cruise along with the PS5 as planned until physical games on it dwindle. As for a PS6 upgrade.... Sony needs to do a lot of convincing to me. An all-digital platform is really the least attractive to me. Lol
Not saying it's completely end of the road for Playstation for me, but I can say my enthusiasm for it will no longer be the same as it was before.
@PuppetMaster I'm honestly already on the Switch train years ago but only as a handheld for some jrpgs that were not being released on PS4 before. I didn't really bought it for Mario or Nintendo 1st party stuff, it's mostly because of the form factor and the ability to own physical copies of games to collect. Playstation has been my main driver for those big games and some F2P. Nowadays my Switch has been idle though. But that may flip once physical copies of games dwindle on the Playstation and I go full Red. Can't believe I'm saying this tbh. Lol
So yeah, maybe once a revision of the Switch 2 arrives. As for you, I say go for it.
@Rich33 Playstation's lack of communication indeed. Like a tsundere in a corner refusing to communicate properly with a lot of "hmph". Lol And about this latest debacle of theirs, I fear that Playstation will only make things clear once the PS6 is ready to be announced.
And it would honestly be bad for the PS6 does not have any form of backwards compatibility since their previous consoles did had such functions with the PS2 and PS3 (launch model). PS4 had a little bit of PS2 bc. I mean the architecture from PS4 to 5 and eventually 6 will be basically the same, especially when they do plan to use the same PS Store throughout their generations.
@Rich33 the fact that movies can be owned only when you buy in physical format (in an almost all-digital and streaming movie industry that is already decades long), I do not expect the gaming industry to have a different trajectory from the movie industry. The confidence in Playstation making a difference is very low. And it's no thanks to the reputation they are giving off as we speak.
Trust me when I say that Playstation was my chosen go to gaming for my hobby since what they did with the PS4 generation was very attractive. Only during the PS5 generation is where I'm slowly getting fed up with their decisions and attitude to the playerbase until this announcement about ending production of physical copy of games is what finally shattered their reputation for me.
So yes, pardon me for being skeptical to Playstation, and in extension, the whole gaming industry.
@PuppetMaster yeah I'm from PH and we pretty much use Singapore servers here for PSN (pretty much with many local sites here using Singapore servers tbh) or Hong Kong. Sometimes even US. Hence why local retailers here sell gift cards from those regions I've mentioned. Nintendo finally made a local server account for us this year actually and it's a good thing, I may lean on Red for the foreseeable future if it means I can continue my game collection there. Lol
It's honestly surprising Sony locally sells Playstations here in our country (even does sales promotions) yet does not bother creating a local account server for us.
@PuppetMaster pretty much. Playstation didn't started to eliminate the existence of physical copies of games just to make the PS Store "more charitable than it used to". It's most likely doing so to gain more control. The best Playstation could probably improve is refund policies, but outright digital ownership? No way they would allow something that gives pirates a chance to copy and replicate games bought from the PS store. It will just make PS do more of that "online check-in" just to make sure the game one has backed up was legally purchased from the store. And that's certainly not ownership. Lol
@PuppetMaster I guess it's trivial to people who possibly have stronger financial capabilities. But not every gamer who wants to sustain a fun hobby are living in developed countries like the land of the free.
As for digital ownership, I don't believe it's as effective. That's like asking Playstation (or even Xbox or Nintendo) to hand over the reigns of the digital licenses to the consumers. It works for consumers yes, but I doubt PS or any console storefronts would just handily give it's customers a chance to do some piracy (which eventually creates a 2nd hand digital market, something PS wanted gone hence why the current situation exist).
@Northern_munkey Yet in those two decades of digital console gaming, only in the PC space such as GOG offered such possibility. What I mean is, the console storefronts weren't obviously designed with digital ownership in mind. Fighting for it is just as a tall order as the businesses would need to overhaul their storefronts. Storefronts that are paranoid against digital piracy.
So my question is: if the majority of gamers supported an all-digital gaming, why didn't they thought of fighting for proper digital ownership even when physical copies of games still exists? Why only seek for it only just now when physical game enthusiasts are making a noise about their choice of gaming option being erased?
So in short, all-digital gamers are just as affected by the situation indirectly.
@DennisReynolds and we're just as fed up with selfish people like you who just embraces things just because it's inevitable. Believe it or not, lawmakers in other countries are actually stepping up to file lawsuits against such anti-consumerism. Even StopKillingGames joined in on the lawsuit. And I'm glad some influential content makers are speaking up to it and spreading information, albeit in a non-bias way.
It's you lot are the reason why businesses keep doing anti-consumer decisions all because it doesn't affect you directly.
If you're not going out of your way to at least have a middle ground with those who are against this "inevitability", then back off if you got nothing else productive to say. If you're fed up with the likes of us, then we're just as fed up with the likes of you selfish people. What you're doing is just making us not back down even more and not accept the situation because people like you exist.
@DennisReynolds you deserve to have your entire digital library be revoked as bad karma. Better yet, a console lock ban. Nothing I dislike more are people who spite on others that are only fighting for their choice of gaming access rights. You can't blame those who keep being vocal about it especially when Playstation's anti-consumer practices is becoming less and less tolerable and acceptable.
People keep saying that if one has nothing better or constructive to say, then stay silent. Now apply that to yourself, why don't you.

Re: Sony's New 'It Happens on PS5' Ad Has Gone Down Exactly as You'd Expect
@PuppetMaster honestly don't care if he doesn't care about tangible things. What's infuriating was his spiteful remark.
Re: Sony's New 'It Happens on PS5' Ad Has Gone Down Exactly as You'd Expect
@DennisReynolds you deserve to have your entire digital library be revoked as bad karma. Better yet, a console lock ban. Nothing I dislike more are people who spite on others that are only fighting for their choice of gaming access rights. You can't blame those who keep being vocal about it especially when Playstation's anti-consumer practices is becoming less and less tolerable and acceptable.
People keep saying that if one has nothing better or constructive to say, then stay silent. Now apply that to yourself, why don't you.
