@CheapMerc wishful thinking at its best I'm afraid. In our region in Asia, they haven't sold physical copies of Xbox games for almost a decade now. When you go to store and see the shelves it's just blue and red boxes. The green boxes are literally just leftovers from the Xbox One generation. So yeah I don't think MS will pivot suddenly to a physical copy commitment, especially when their recent copies don't even have the full games on disc either.
@ATaco yes pretty much what I was thinking about here. It's just proving Sony's point. Many physical games enthusiasts migrating to pc to consume all-digital gaming just tells Sony that they are on the correct path. Only real way to get PS attention is the sudden rise of physical copy sales, which is sadly hard to do and convince others to do so.
@nomither6 it's called "refusal to embrace an all-digital gaming" future, not refusal to own a pc. But idgaf if it's an excuse rather than being hypocritical. That just proves Sony's point that physical media is a thing of the past. You just embraced digital media on a different platform. I own a laptop that's pretty capable of midrange quality gaming as such specs is required for my field of work. I just want to enter into gaming "my way". And the "nobody has lost their games" is so wrong. Ubisoft and, to some extent, Square Enix already proved that. Guess what, PC is also a DRM-heavy platform out there. If, for example, Steam decides to revoke a license or goes under, you lose everything unless you bought it DRM-free on GOG. I mean even that is eventually not fool-proof. You don't own digital files, you rent a temporary license that can be pulled at any moment. It already happened you know.
I will just make the most of it. Going to pc is no different from embracing the all-digital gaming, which is hypocritical to the point of why we're angry at PS for ditching physical copies of games.
So yeah, if nothing will sway console makers from stopping physical media support in the future, then I might just make the most of it until I got a satisfactory amount of tangible games collection.
@nomither6 ah yes, the ole "freedom of choice". The freedom to choose the all-digital storefront that suits your "all-digital" needs.
Give me a break, that still doesn't give you any tangible ownership to your games. GOG does it but pretty ineffective because pc gamers are already conditioned to embrace all-digital. I blame some publishers as well for not putting all game content on physical media despite the medium capable of holding an entire 1.0 version of the game.
I find it quite interesting and funny that many will flock to the platform that basically "conditioned" many gamers to embrace an all-digital gaming all because it has one "good" all-digital storefront. So "good" is that store that gamers felt fine going all-digital. :/
It's not enough. Some big name publishers should "pull out" support for the next generation until something gets reversed to make an absolute statement to SIE. To show them that even the minority of less than 20% has enough grunt to sway the scale against them.
Sure it's one way to streamline content for the supposed traditional console PS6 and portable PS6, with the latter not having any problems dealing with a drive to install games on since either hardware can just share software.
I can still buy digital but Playstation shouldn't expect me to buy their single player games full price, (yes I only play single player games, no online games for me). I refuse to pay big sums of money for digital content only that I'm not even the owner of. It's quite "insulting" for one that pretty much just recently started gaming and collecting.
I understand why it's happening, but I refuse to accept it's happening. I don't consider digital media as a "collection" and I'm not ready to suddenly stop this game collecting spree of mine since I started into gaming a decade ago. I won't settle for just related merchandise of games as a collection, the game needs to be in physical format as well.
I hope Playstation gets an ABSOLUTE and INTENSE backlash from this decision, regardless whether physical games become niche in the future. It needs to remain as an option.
@Nem tbf they are not truly aiming to sell Playstations using live service games. What they truly aim is to have a "continuous" source of income where every top up goes straight to their finances, unlike relying on 3rd party LS/gacha games where they only get about 30% per customer spending.
@awp69 "Licensing Agreement". Storefront have to comply by "returning" everything back to the license holder. Your movies are gone because that's what Studio Canal may have dictated so with their licensing agreement. PS store is just there to distribute it.
@BlueLobster as much as we wish Sony can do that, it's not possible. They can delay but only to an extent allowable by the supplier. You could say it's also the reason why Valve can't delay the Steam Machine any further. Clients like Playstation (and other hardware makers) order the parts way in advance and may either get penalized by the supplier/manufacturer or get barred from doing business with them for delaying manufacturing. They are not fond of unmoving supply inventory.
Was planning on getting a 1TB external hdd to back up some work documents and personal files and it made me choke a bit after seeing how even HDDs doubled in price. Consumer electronics are definitely becoming less affordable especially in developing countries like where I'm in. Even Chinese branded ones are becoming expensive too.
The problem with pushing it too far up is that console players would be paying for hardware that's already outdated. Sure the PS4 was the same but I don't think this decade would be as accepting especially when many are more knowing with the latest tech than before. Only through performance and quality that can mask the "outdatedness" of a PS6 if it will indeed release at the start of the next decade.

@LogicStrikesAgain they're just angry for the sake of it. Hypocritical I should say.

@kcarnes9051 congratulations. You're all set to an all-digital future. You're now set to own nothing and be happy with it in the near future.
If you think the pc storefronts will stay that way for longer then I say you're pretty much set in "zero ownership" gaming. 👍
