Great news! Really looking forward to a new entry. I’ve been playing Ace Combat since the PS1. And Ace Combat 7 is still a great game to play today, so don’t sit on that ps store sale.
Or maybe just drop the RPG elements all together. AC storylines have always been forgettable at best since AC2. And with origins the series has become generic in the gameplay department as well. Consider me a fool, but I really liked the stealth gameplay and parcours of the old entries.
Remember that time when people were convincing themselves that this live service push from Sony would not necessarily come at the expense of development resources for single player games? Well… here we are.
@get2sammyb Even if other games charge the same amount (or more) for cosmetics/dlc, that doesn’t make it right. This is just one of the problems of live service games: the need to keep enough players happy or lose the revenue that keeps the whole thing going. Fortunately, Arrowhead have been more than generous in their community engagement and can bank some good will, no matter how irate parts of the fan base acts.
20 for the entire set and a time limit that expires in a few days is a bit too greedy. I would have no problem paying or grinding for a Killzone war bond that remains available. The monetization on the normal war bonds is fair. For me this leans a little bit too much on the Fomo of Killzone fans.
Edit: OK, I stand corrected. Kudos to Arrowhead for the way they are engaging with their community. Now I am considering buying the entire set 😂🤦🏻♂️
It baffles me why Sony keeps flogging this IP. The setting is interesting, but the story is a convoluted mess and the characters lack the appeal of the other main IPs. I look forward to Horizon 3, but please stop with the yearly spinoffs/remasters or otherwise Horizon becomes the next AC. If you want to make a MMO go for it, but come up with something original. What’s next Horizon Karting?
@IOI Fully agree. The amount of “this game is also PS5 Pro enhanced” articles is getting silly now. What’s next? An article about the inside of the box it came in?
For me it’s Astrobot for the win. It’s a pretty diverse shortlist. Not what I expected at the beginning of the year, to be honest. Still, I wouldn’t call 2024 a vintage year for gaming..
Sure it looks nicer, but I can’t help but being disappointed that developers and publishers spend time and resources on remasters of games that are already available on current gen systems. I’d rather have new gaming experiences instead of better lighting, increased foliage and realistic brick walls. I know it is impressive technicaly and sadly makes financially sense, but it feels creatively bankrupt.
@Max_the_German don’t let the nostalgic fanboys get to you. Yes, the visuals and set pieces were impressive back in the day, but the story was a boring cliché and I really disliked the supernatural elements in the last levels. And don’t get me started on that final boss fight…
@Tr1ggsy agree, retro gaming rules. But music and movies are not that different. Even when you buy physical you only own the plastic disc and you buy a right of use / a licence to use its contents. You may do as you please with the disc: put it in a device, hang it on the wall or use it as a coaster for your drink. But, except for home use, you can’t do as you please with the contents of the disc (for example show it in public). The physical disc acts as a token, or prove that you bought the licence. In your physical media example, you are right that there is no realistic way your licence could be revoked. But if your house burns down and you lose your physical collection, you also lose your licences / access to the content. Media preservation is a tough challenge and historically the most reliable media to store content are still books, paintings and sheet music, not very useful when it comes to game preservation. Sorry for the long post, I appreciate the discussion.
@AdamNovice Agree, but Sony also thought Concord had potential. I just fear that Guerrilla might come to the same conclusion as Naughty Dog and that this title is going eat up a sizeable chunck of the studio’s resources in order to be successful
@AdamNovice Yes, they should have done that in 2018. Then we could be looking forward to the release of new IP in 2025. They lean to heavily on the Horizon IP. It is almost as delusional as thinking Concord could be the new Star Wars. I like the Horizon games but this is just dull and unimaginative
The latest DF hands on test is an interesting read: “[…] if you're already enjoying games in their 30fps quality modes, then the difference is less obvious. Image quality is already pretty good on the base consoles, especially at a normal viewing distance from a 4K screen, and you're not going to see a huge visual disparity in these sorts of modes unless the developers can really layer on the RT effects. Similarly, if the games that you play in performance modes look fine to you - perhaps they're running at 1440p 60fps - then again, you may not get much of an advantage from PS5 Pro.” It also notes there is a sizeable number of games that run better on pro, but are not tranformatively better given the CPU limitations. Personally, I’m still happy to wait for PS6 and enjoy a bigger generational leap.
@TrickyDicky99 legally you only own the case and the plastic disc, not the software installed on it. In the old days with the complete game on disc/cartridge that didn’t matter because as you stated above there was no practical way to revoke it. But today’s incomplete games on disc are glorified tokens for day 1 patches.
@SilentBluntman that would be the dream. The footage of the Mission 51 was promising. Most of the assets and storyline are already in place, so it wouldn’t be impossible to make a Ground Zeroes sized addition. That would make it a true Master Collection. But I doubt it will ever happen.
There is no such thing as ownership when it comes to games (or movies or music). Even on the physical box it clearly states that you’re buying a license to play the game.
@PuppetMaster not every game has Mario Bros IP potential or has to grow into a multimedia franchise. It’s alright to make a great game and move on. Eventually even SP, Naughty Dog and Guerrilla will, otherwise we would be playing Sly Cooper 8 or Crash Bandicoot 11 instead of GoT or TLoU.
Just a crazy idea: maybe SP could just make a new GAME after GoY? Not everything has to be a multimedia multiverse of spinoffs, tv/movie adaptations, novels, boardgames and LEGO sets, with matching remaster/remakes of the original material. I’d hate to see SP go the way of Naughty Dog or Guerrilla.
@Flaming_Kaiser That is exactly my point: the game is BC so there is no need for a remaster, even for newcomers to the IP. If SIE want smallers projects to retain staff and train new talent that’s fine. But use these finite resources to do something interesting instead of rehashing already accessible content.
What’s the point of backwards compatibility if they keep churning out remasters/remakes? I just wish that Sony would use these resources to make new experiences or stuff like UC Lost legacy and Miles Morales. Not that long ago DLC was used to break in new studio talent, create new content and retain staff between big releases. You don’t need remasters/remakes for that. But you can’t charge full price for DLC..
What a load of bollocks. “We’re not saving money, but we’re trying to stay within budgetary constraints” What a shame. I liked The Order 1886 for what it was; a short single player game with high production values. Yes, it was a bit light on gameplay, but the setting was interesting. I’m getting a bit fed up with this trend of big corporations buying up studios only to close them within a couple of years to deal with ‘budgetary constraints’. If you’re tight on budget, don’t go out and buy more studios.
@get2sammyb Well, if you include the two sizeable dlc’s and the MMO and multiplayer spin-offs in development (and now potentially a Lego game) there is a case to be made that the IP is being milked. My money is on the Lego set. I would love to see more PlayStation IP Lego sets. I think they could make some pretty cool Uncharted, Astrobot or Killzone sets.
Actually, I expect the number of subscribers will start to go down soon. A lot of subscribers, including myself, signed up for a year or more. Speaking for myself, I was happy to give premium/extra a go, but now I’d rather pay for the games I want and play them when I want.
Great! Now add some extra tracks. Is it too much to ask to release 2-3 new tracks every year? Nonetheless, it is still one of my favourite PS5 games, especially with PSVR2. I wish more racing games support VR like GT7 does.
What games do you hope receive PS5 Pro support? I hope not a single one. I don’t get Sony. First you have a CEO complaining about profit margins, then they release another machine which requires additional optimisation for new and existing games. What a pointless machine. Just do a Nintendo: stick to your hardware and churn out games.
@Flaming_Kaiser I never said it ten times and I never mentioned full games. I talked about releases. And five releases in six years, with the last two releasing within two months of each other, is flooding the market, or at the very least bad timing. I love the IP, but I want to avoid franchise fatigue. The statement: "there may be multiple online Horizon games in the works" does not inspire confidence..
Yay, another remaster tie-in with a movie/tv series. Just, no… The only thing that this IP really needs is a live service MMO spin-off (but I prefer a proper sequel)
@get2sammyb 5 releases in 6 years? Some would consider that flooding the market. I like the Horizon IP, but I wish they would give it a rest and give Killzone some love or create something new.
I don't see the logic: sales are down, profit margins are getting slimmer, current PS5 price cuts are unlikely, and it remains doubtful if a Pro model can offer meaningful upgrades for an acceptable price point. Just last week Hiroki Totoki stated that he wants the company to be aggressive when it comes to improving its gaming division’s profit margins, by "putting product lines together to make it affordable, without relying on steep discounts, to reasonably sell them to continue our commercial journey on a sustainable basis" Releasing a PS5 pro would be moving in the opposite direction.
Really looking forward to this. So glad this isn’t another unimaginative military shooter where you run around in a Nicki Minaj skin. I loved the first one and I’m ready to save democracy in 3rd person perspective.
Bit naive to assume that any hypothetical profits of a mobile or GaaS ‘winner’ will be reinvested into PlayStation Studios single player games. If they do hit the jackpot, a big chunk will go the shareholders and I doubt they will want to invest in expensive, lower ROI, single player games if they can milk a successful mobile/GaaS cash cow dry.
I miss the trendsetting PS1 and PS2 days. Nowadays it feels PlayStation is just chasing trends.
I had a lot of fun with this game over the weekend. It really has this “one more game” vibe. Playing with friends, it’s hard to put down. I don’t get the negativity concerning the AI voice work. For what is essentially background noise, the AI solution is just fine. If this frees up resources for game development that’s OK.
Select up to five games? Jeez, I had trouble picking just three. Not much to be genuinely excited for so far. Where are all the PlayStation Studios titles?
Jeez, bug fixing a full priced master collection. How low can you go? I’m looking forward to having the complete serie on PS5, but agree with @Arnna and @LifeGirl this is over priced. I still play these games on the Vita each year and see no added benefit. With the exception of MGS1, they have sold this collection multiple times now
