Re: PS Stars' Digital Collectibles Are 'Definitely Not' NFTs, Sony Stresses

BigBirdy

Unless your in the current minority of peeps that loves NFTs (uggghhh, absolutely hate them!), then let's agree that this is great news, and even under Jim's reign (he's made a good call here right?), they've come to this decision!

By all means, get the pitchforks out if they do a U-Turn, but give them praise for getting this right, at this moment in time.

Re: Sony Announces PlayStation Stars, a Free Loyalty Scheme for PS5, PS4 Fans

BigBirdy

Sounds great! As someone that is primarily a PS player, and that likes collecting trophies as a sideline (I'll try and get all the gongs in games I'm actively playing, but I'm not buying games for trophies).

So on that note hopefully there is some meaningful thought to the rewards, and not just "if you get 50 platinum in a week...!) etc

And being the first to platinum a game is great for some crazy speedrunners, but again only gives prizes to that one person... The winning selection needs to be wider than that imho

Re: Poll: Is The Last of Us: Part 1 Really a 'Cash Grab'?

BigBirdy

@Titntin, I agree the options could've been wider than the 2 black and white polarising options, but the majority of responses have been thoughtful and we've both replied!

I do think they'd get as much feedback, if not more, if they "trusted" us with sensibly chosen options...

Re: Poll: Is The Last of Us: Part 1 Really a 'Cash Grab'?

BigBirdy

I think we all agree that Naughty Dog is absolutely making the best, most definitive version.

The sensible points against this are that it's too expensive (cash grab!), re-released for a 3rd time (in gaming circles, in a relatively short timescale), and it's "wasting" Naughty Dog resources.

Fair points to be sure, and you can easily argue for or against!

I personally sit in the middle (splinters, ouch!
). I won't be buying until it comes down in price, but I do see the value in this

For LOU fans that absolutely must support either the game or Naughty Dog. And most importantly for NEW fans that will be coming in to this experience for the first time, not just PC, but most definitely from the in-coming series.

It's honestly the first time I can recall that Sony is pulling it's entire force in one direction, gaming, television, music, marketing, etc so I think the memo from above will be that this NEEDS to be a success if Sony are to continue down this path.

As a gamer, on a dedicated gaming site, I'm split because selfishly I only really care about the gaming aspect...

But if Sony do pull this off, it could be huge... A big USP over it's nearest 2 gaming rivals.... And more money means better games???? Right???

Re: Reminder: PS Plus Extra, Premium Launches in North America Tomorrow

BigBirdy

@KilloWertz, @get2sammyb, agreed that when Sony's marketing is in full swing, they do great.

In the UK, Horizon was all over the place, buses, TV, cinema, etc.

But this isn't a unilateral win-win for Sony, so expecting little to no funfair - until they can push some really compelling bonuses to the model. Maybe after they start announcing some of their own first party stuff.

Re: Reminder: PS Plus Extra, Premium Launches in North America Tomorrow

BigBirdy

@ATaco, I think the Sony of old post PS5 would've gone to town and made a song and dance about it post the Team in Greens event, but the market and stakes have changed.

I think Sony are on the backfoot here with the tech guys, not able to keep the marketing guys up to date! But despite this I do like the offering and will be stepping up to the Extra tier.

Also I think Sony is purposely playing the "Ronan Keeting" strategy lol "you say it best when you say nothing at all"...

If they go toe to toe with Xbox, they'll be unfairly (imho) be judged by gaming press on one single point (day one releases) despite the benefits to existing plus users like me.

So, I expect Sony to keep fairly mum about the whole launch, and not make a big deal...

Re: Sony Dumps Funds into Live Service Software Firm

BigBirdy

And I do agree, some 2+2=5 overeactions here.
Only when Sony stop delivering the single player love, will I depart from the platform.
As it stands, I think I agree with their strategy of broadening their developer base, and creating games in both the single player and live service space. You can have both... But time will tell....

Re: Sony Dumps Funds into Live Service Software Firm

BigBirdy

I honestly think this is where Sony fans (which I lump myself in with) either need to close their eyes and ignore news like this OR start accepting that Sony NEED to do this.
Sony is still the market leader, but as all these buy-outs are proving, it's a dog eat (smaller) dog world at the moment! They need to invest in technologies that will be used, format agnostic, to reap the benefits.
Different markets, but household names like Nokia, as an example, used to rule the roost... No more. And gaming wise, Atari... And Sega (to a degree).... Just mere footnotes of their previous dominance.

Re: Best Co-Op Games on PS5

BigBirdy

@AnotherLuke, yeah another good shout with Lovers in a dangerous spacetime, and Towerfall Great 4 player games also, with Lovers a great intro into team work!

I did try Helldivers, but I got bored after my kids found it more hilarious to blast me to pieces, rather than the aliens

To anyone else reading these comments for other local multiplayer ideas, I forgot these too:
Puyo Puyo Tetris (or no 2)
Super Bomberman R (or online!, if you're hardcore enough)
Trine games
Unravel 2

Re: Best Co-Op Games on PS5

BigBirdy

@get2sammyb, Thanks for the insight, and yeah that third point is the biggest problem right now. Appreciate that you are attempting to automate as much as possible to free up time for other things that I'm sure need more curation, but be warned, we all give developers hell for releasing stuff in 'beta' state, so y'know us folk and our pitchforks....

Re: Best Co-Op Games on PS5

BigBirdy

I was really looking forward to this list as I'm always on the lookout for couch co-op multiplayer games with my kids, but as many have pointed out, this list is best rated game (with even vague mp elements), rather than best co-op experience - so a really mis-leading list IMHO!

I think a personally curated list would be far better here, and I think there is enough true multiplayer games to split your list between mp and couch co-op.

How Streets of Rage 4 (great couch co-op game!) "avoided" this list is beyond me! And the myriad of Lego games...

Adding to this list, is Spelunky and the subtly improved Spelunky 2.

@Pushbuttons, some other great ideas, which I'd like to try out

Re: Soapbox: I Don't Know How to Feel About This PS4-to-PS5 Upgrade Uproar

BigBirdy

Some good reasoned discussions on this from both sides on these comments, which have finally dragged me in!

Firstly, no one in their right minds really wants to pay more money than what your used to paying, but the simple factor is games - especially the type that Sony tends to invest in - cost ALOT of money to make.

I know wheeling out Covid as an excuse is really unfashionable now, but one factor that no one has considered is the sheer costs of keeping everyone employed, whilst being in all likelihood half as productive as they would've been otherwise! Just check out the credits on TLOU2... scrolls on ages!!!

The next factor is working conditions and crunch... I think there is a fair bit of hypocrisy from some peeps on here that are super quick to "shame" Sony when these stories break, but comment here that they don't want to pay more.

Like it or loathe it, Sony are sticking their necks out here on costs (they don't have MS's seemingly limitless covers). Record sales say otherwise, but it is burning a fair bit of the hardcore fanbase goodwill from the PS4 generation...
