We’re not entirely sure why Rockstar hasn’t just come out and told everyone that Red Dead Redemption 2 will ship on two Blu-ray discs, but here’s what appears to be our first look at the title’s dual set-up. The photos come courtesy of a Canadian YouTuber and seem to be legit, but you never know in this day and age – it’d be easy to fake.

That said there’s more freakin’ smoke surrounding this “rumour” than at the World Vaping Championships. The discs are clearly marked ‘Data Disc’ and ‘Play Disc’, which means you’ll install from the first one before using the latter to boot the actual game. It’s similar to the way Grand Theft Auto V functioned on the Xbox 360, then.
Pretty insane, though. Two Blu-rays! Two of ‘em!

Feel conflicted. I want to just download this game, but I also want that ultimate edition steelbook.
Like the old days of PC gaming; having to put in 6 discs just to install the game, then put in a play disc to play the game.
I just wanna go back, back to 1999. Take a ride to my old neighbourhood.
Discs are the future.
But the next step up for BluRay is expensive, cartridge expensive.
I dunno man. Digital only doesn't just seem like an inevitability for convenience but necessity.
But then these systems need to start coming with SSDs for fast access, or VERY large HDDS, when a single game can take up a 10th of the current standard.
Theres a world vaping championship?? I thought it was just water vapor and not smoke? What?
@ellsworth004 There is. There's also a world air guitar championship. Lotta dumb things in this world.
I remember dragons lair being six discs for the Amiga 500
We've seen worse, so you could say optical media is actually improving, going by the fact that we haven't seen too many games on PS4 that require multiple discs
@MadAussieBloke I loved gaming back then. commodore 64, amstrad and then Amiga.
@Octane I miss those days of 3-4 Discs for PS1 haha
i would be inclined to believe it BUT each picture only shows one disc at a time, you don;t see the full disc on the second picture and you don't see the box
now if we saw the full box and both discs fully in the same picture it would be a different story
Strange! My digital copy only has 1 disk
@FullbringIchigo Why would this be an elaborate hoax?
@Octane because it's the internet
@FullbringIchigo
There s been lots of pics of the cover for a while now. It definitely says two discs
Multi-load!! I believe thats what it was called in the old days.
If my old memory is correct, The Last Ninja on C64 came on 2 tapes, using both sides!
(still one of the best games of all time imho).
I have the Ultimate Edition pre-ordered for Xbox One and they could have offered it on a Ultra HD Bluray as these can be triple layer and up to 100GB with 128 Mbit/s - although these wouldn't work on the original XB1 - just the S and X.
I have no issue with games coming on multiple discs. I would prefer that the second+ disc(s) are for things like high res textures, language packs etc and optional install - you can install the high res textures if you want (Or need with two tier consoles like S and X) and just install the language pack you want or need if the 'default' language is English for example. Low res Textures maybe a sacrifice for some who may not have HDD space and if you only install the language you need, you cut down on a large chunk of a game's file size too.
The game itself is therefore just on one disc with just a default language and low res assets to keep the size down to the bare minimum. This is the disc you need to play the game - regardless of whether its online or offline. Its the disc with your licence on - after all the game is 'installed' to the HDD so its just the licence that you need to play anyway so you shouldn't be 'swapping' discs like we had to in the past. I don't know whether this could be splitting up the assets and language packs or the whole game - either way, you aren't going to need to swap discs because the games don't run from discs anymore.
2 discs, 3 discs, 10 discs, giddy up partner.
@Giygas_95 I went with the Ultimate Edition steelbook, the next day after my pre-order everything sold out. I'm sure the steelbook will be worth quite a lot on eBay once the game launches.
I'm a bit confused as to why they haven't just come out and confirmed it by now. For most people it doesn't make a difference anyway but those who have slow internet 9 caps isn't this a good thing? It means they won't have to download about 50gb of data to install the game
@carlos82 I guess that from their perspective they don't have to come out and say anything about it. If you buy the game physically, you get it physical, all on disc. Just like any other game.
It's just that people started speculating about a 50GB download, but it seems like that was never the case. I guess they could clarify it.
Red Dead Redeuxmption
@Octane it probably is just that, I know it makes no difference to me either way and if anything this is preferable to a large download being required
@Boxmonkey Yeah I remember that!
Most of the Cinemaware games were on lots of discs too. I remember whenever you wanted to take off in the game Wings you had to load a certain disc then when you landed another disc was needed. Crazy!
The way you keep posting new articles about the number of discs their next game will be on 4 discs just for the media coverage. 😁
Does anybody know if this means you don’t need that huge gigabyte download? I just don’t have fast Internet. I can understand an update or a patch but I just can’t wait for 50 GB to be downloaded.
@slampog Yeah...I ended up going with the digital special edition. I don't want to have more boxes lying around, in fact I wish I had gotten more games digital instead of physical since they take up space on your HDD either way. Also I didn't want to spend the extra money. The reason I went with the special edition though?
I love the Winchester 1897 so much, and I wanted to have it available as soon as I started the game. That gun is so sleek while having that old, classy feel, and I want a real one so badly.
My pre order started downloading yesterday. I was a little shocked to see that it was 90gb. Makes sense if theres 2 discs i suppose. Regardless i cant wait for launch.
@FearIsUseful 🤣
Game should just be called Red Dead Redemption II Discs.
So, two discs by the price of one. How one can justify the price of the digital version?
i just paid 60 quid to download it im on the hype train whos with me
I’ve bought my last few games digitally and was thinking about going physical with this one. This news confirms its digital for me. I should’ve bought Spider-Man digital though. Finished it so quickly and would’ve loved to trade it in toward RDR2.
@whizzkidd same thing I wonder....
@BAMozzy NO they could NOT have offered it on Xbox One X on 1 disc its a FACT that games have to run on the OG X1 and the X...They weren't going to make special discs just for 1 console..Its factual that the OG Xbox and the S are less powerful than the PS4 and the Pro...Nobody with a brain would make 1 special disc for 1 platform
I still haven't worked out how they stop my Sega Saturn going back to the system menu when I open the door to change a disc... little bit of sorcery right there.
This is pretty crazy but as long as the actual game installation process isn't too long, i'm fine with it.
